Inuyasha pulled into his designated parking spot in front of his office. He was still trying to shake off seeing Kikyo and Naraku. Part of him was angry and another part was scared.
'What if she had made it to him? What if she had tried to talk to him? Would she figure out it was him who took the jewel?' His thoughts were swirling around his head.
Taking a priceless artifact was highly illegal. Especially in Japan, they took their heritage very seriously. Inuyasha knew if anyone found out he would be in so much trouble.
Which is why he had to keep Kagome from getting to close. He could never let her get involved. No telling what that bastard Naraku was capable of. Even after everything Inuyasha was still worried about what he might do to Kikyo.
If Naraku found out Inuyasha had stolen the jewel he could blame Kikyo for being a co-conspirator. Thoughts like that were running around his mind. He would protect Kikyo from Naraku even if she didn't love him.
Inuyasha was having a terrible time working. His mind was so clouded he hadn't accomplished one thing all day. His computer had shown only the screen saver most of the day.
Five o'clock was rolling around much to Inuyasha's dismay. He had accomplished nothing all day. 'Well it is my company if nothing gets done I only have myself to blame.'
He had decided to knock off and call it a day. There really was no point in staying. He shut everything off and gathered his belongings. Maybe he could pick Kagome up, go have a small dinner and rent a movie.
He opened his door to leave only to see Kikyo standing there with her hand up looking like she was getting ready to knock. "Oh Inuyasha I was going to knock. Your assistant said it was ok."
"What do you want Kikyo?" He stepped back to let her in his office. He didn't want his gossipy assistant listening to their conversation. "You can go home now, Kimiko." with a grumpy look he shut the door.
"I was hoping we could talk. You took off so fast this morning I wasn't able to flag you down. I was hoping you would see me and pull over." She sat down on his couch, making a show of crossing her long legs.
"Oh I saw you all right. Making goo goo eyes at Naraku. I didn't want to interrupt your happy moment with my half demon self." His voice was so tight he didn't even recognize it.
"Why didn't you come that morning?" She gave him a sad look. He made his way behind his desk and sat down. Running his hand through his hair and taking a much needed breath.
"Seriously? I guess I would have to say I changed my mind. I came to the realization you were never gonna love me human or not. I didn't want to get my hopes up for something like a wish on a stupid jewel."
"Oh, Inuyasha I know you won't believe me but I am sorry. You were right it was stupid to pin all of ones hopes on a wish that may or may not work. Someone came into my apartment the night before you were to make your wish and stole the jewel."
"What? That's not possible. How could someone break into your apartment?" He was hoping he sounded convincing. He was pouring on the innocent act now.
"I guess they came through my sliding glass door. No one even saw them, so I guess they didn't use a ladder. So that only leaves demons and hanyou's. "
"Oh, Kikyo you're not suggesting I would, I mean, I would never. I was way to angry to even be around your place, much less…" He trailed off trying to sound hurt and innocent. He was anything but.
"No, no I wasn't accusing you. Especially after you shamed me with your answer as to why you didn't come. I knew it wasn't you all along. I didn't even give your name to the police. Naraku was super pissed about it too. He believes it was you."
"Asshole, of course he does. It was probably him. He probably hired some demon to come to your place and take it. All the while trying to make you believe it was me. What a bastard."
"Please don't Inuyasha." She took a shaky deep breath. " He asked me to marry him. We have set a date for spring. If you still love me the way you always said you did please try to be happy for me."
"Kikyo no, please anyone but him. I don't trust him. You are going to get hurt. He is not a good guy I can feel it. Please rethink this. You deserve so much better."
"I love him Inuyasha, even if he doesn't love me. I don't deserve better, he is the only one. I can't help myself. I know he's only asking me because people who donate like to donate to happy couples who throw good parties at their beautiful homes." She sighed in defeat.
"Kikyo you could marry me. I would take such good care of you, I would always protect you. I would buy you a monstrous house and you could throw parties on my human nights. I still love you"
"Oh Inuyasha if only it were that easy. After loosing the jewel all the work Naraku and I had done was worthless. The need for donations has now turned desperate. The jewel was going to bring in untold grants and donations, but now we are hanging on by a thread." She started to cry.
Inuyasha had thought taking the jewel would protect him from having to wish on it. He thought it would punish Naraku and Kikyo a little not destroy them. He moved over to the couch and sat by her.
"Is there anything I can do to help? I can make a donation." That made her smile through her tears. She even gave him a small chuckle.
She wiped the tears from her eyes and angled her body to face him. She took in a deep breath and said. "Make love to me. No one has ever made love to me the way that you used to. I want you so badly. I need you. Please Inuyasha." She bent in to give him a kiss.
He accepted it gladly. He had never stopped loving her. No matter how many times she hurt him he just couldn't stop. She ran her hands through his hair coming to the top of his scalp.
She barely grazed passed one of his furry ears when she stopped. Gasping she pulled back. "I can't do it. I still can't accept you. I just can't." She angrily pushed him back.
"You know maybe Naraku was right, maybe you did take the jewel. What was I thinking? You are nothing but an abomination. You actually make me sick." She spit on him and ran out of his office.
Inuyasha was so pissed now he could hardly keep his demon side in check. 'How could I let her do it to me again? I am such a stupid asshole.' He punched a hole in his office door on his way out and decided to head to Kagome's.
One week later
Kagome hadn't seen or spoken to Inuyasha since that night he had accosted her. She still missed him but she seemed to be doing ok. Reaching in her desk she pulled out the ripped piece of newspaper and smiled. Somehow every time she felt sad all she had to do was take out that piece of paper and she instantly felt better. She hadn't been brave enough to call the number written on it yet but she knew she would soon.
The door to the waiting room opened and in came Kagome's favorite patient. Rin Takahashi. She was Inuyasha's niece and probably the cutest thing to ever grace the planet. Kagome adored her and was so happy to see her.
Rin came running up to Kagome and crawled up onto her lap. "Hi, Kagome" She yelled with a childlike passion. She threw her arms around Kagome's neck and squeezed with all her might.
Kagome laughed and told Rin she was choking her to death. Rin instantly let go and whispered "sorry."
Kagome hugged her, told her it was ok and asked her where her Grandma Izayoi was.
"Oh Grandma didn't come today, my daddy brought me." No sooner had Rin finished her sentenced when the lobby door opened up and in walked the beautiful man from the train.
