Sesshomaru checked Inuyasha's wounds and saw that they were already healing nicely. He was quite pleased with himself and his work. Listening to Inuyasha's breathing he felt confident that his little brother was ready to breath on his own again and disconnected him from the machine.
He waited and listened to see if he was capable of breathing on his own. After watching his chest rise and fall several times on it's own Sesshomaru gave a small satisfied sigh. 'Inuyasha I hope you have a good reason for putting all of us through this.'
Sesshomaru left his brother and headed towards the kitchen, he was delighted to see Kagome at the table talking with Rin about her favorite cartoon. Kagome gently looked towards him and smiled a warm and genuine smile. "Good morning handsome how did you sleep?"
Rin giggled at someone calling her daddy handsome. Sesshomaru hovered over her and asked "Don't you think your father is handsome, Rin?" She giggled and mumbled "Oh daddy." He kissed her on top of the head and walked over to make some coffee.
"I slept very well Kagome and you?" She turned in her chair so she could look him in the face. "Very well, thank you. I always sleep well when I stay here. It must be because I am in the same house as this little ball of sunshine here." She turned back to Rin and ruffled her hair. Rin beamed from ear to ear and looked at Kagome as if she was the most wonderful person in the world.
The butler came into the kitchen and addressed Sesshomaru directly. "Sir, there is a detective at the door and he says he needs to speak with you immediately. Sir, it appears to be about the guest in your guest room." He lowered his voice and leaned in close for the last part.
"Thank you. Please take him to the den and I will be in momentarily. No wait, not the den. Take him to the back patio. It's a nice enough day. Please see to his needs and I will be right out." The butler nodded his understanding and left the room without a word.
Kagome stood up and walked over to Sesshomaru who was deep in thought. "This is not good is it?" Rin looked up from her breakfast and asked "what's not good daddy?" Kagome moved back over to her and told her it was nothing just that the coffee was bad. She seemed satisfied with the answer and went back to eating her breakfast.
Sesshomaru took in a deep decisive breath and said very solemnly "I guess I should go see what he is here for, get it over with anyway." He gave a half smile to Kagome, who had lost all of the color in her cheeks. "It will be all right Kagome , I promise." He ran his hand along the back of her head, leaned down and kissed her cheek.
She gave him a weak smile and stared at him wide eyed as if she had seen a ghost. He could see how scared she was and it made him even more uneasy than he already was. He sighed and took another deep breath, as if it would by him some more time to escape the inevitable. The respite wasn't long enough and he knew he had to face the music.
He walked down the corridor that led to the back patio. He felt as if he was a dead man walking the last walk to the final end. His thoughts were racing as to what he was going to say or do. 'What if Inuyasha did something bad enough that he was an accessory and was sent to jail with him. Who would take care of Rin? The hospital would have to kick him off of the staff . His shame would be monumental. Inuyasha I will kill you myself with my own two hands.'
He came out onto the patio and was surprised to see Inuyasha's old high school friend Koga. "Koga, it's been a long time. How may I help you?" Koga turned to face Sesshomaru with an angry look on his face. "I know Inuyasha is here, I can smell him and he is in a lot of trouble."
"What happened? He was hurt very badly and I have know idea what happened. He hasn't been able to talk so I have no idea. Please tell me what happened." Sesshomaru looked at him with a look of desperation and Koga knew he was telling the truth.
"Well, he has been accused of breaking into his ex girlfriends apartment. Her boyfriend was staying with her and caught Inuyasha. He said he shot Inuyasha as he was running away." Koga gave a sigh and sat back down at the patio table. "Was it Kikyo's apartment?" Sesshomaru asked as he sat down next to him.
"Yeah, and her boyfriend Naraku Yoshida. I don't like that guy, he is the one that got Kikyo all worked up and convinced her that Inuyasha was the one who stole the jewel in the first place. There is something off about him, I don't trust him." He shifted in his seat and took a drink of the lemonade the butler had brought him earlier.
"I am going to have to arrest him Sesshomaru." Sesshomaru gave him a very angry look then said "I had to perform surgery on him and take out the bullets. He still hasn't come to yet. Can you buy us sometime?" Koga looked at him almost choking on his lemonade "So it's true. Inuyasha was there and that Naraku guy did shoot him."
Sesshomaru stood up and motioned for Koga to stand up too. " Follow me, he is this way. He has been out of it since I operated on him. He is very weak, a bullet hit him in the lung." Both men slowly walked down the hallway towards the recuperating Inuyasha.
Sesshomaru opened the door and without looking pointed into the room. Koga turned to him and asked him if it was some kind of joke. When he looked into the room he saw that Inuyasha was gone. Sesshomaru looked at him with a confused look on his face.
"I can smell that he was here Sesshomaru. What is going on?" Sesshomaru shook his head "I have no idea. He was here this morning. He must have heard you and took off. This is bad, he was no where near ready to be moving around, much less run." Sesshomaru leaned against the door and ran his hand through his hair.
"Mind if I take a quick look around? His smell is getting faint so I am pretty sure he has gone. But maybe I can catch a lead as to which way he has gone. If he is as bad off as you say we had probably better find him quick." Sesshomaru nodded and moved to let Koga pass.
"Go ahead and look around. If you have any questions or need anything just ask a staff member to come and get me." Koga reached in his pocket and pulled out a card. Handing it to Sesshomaru he let him know he could call him day or night if anything came up.
Sesshomaru wandered back into the kitchen to find Rin and Kagome waiting for him. "Rin could you go and find Ms Peabody then have her help you get ready for the day and stay with her until I come for you?" Rin began to whine "but daddy I wanted Kagome to help me." She stuck her lower lip out into a pout.
Sesshomaru raised his voice just a little and spoke firmly "Rin I told you to go find Ms. Peabody. It is not up for discussion. Now tell Kagome goodbye and go." Rin let out a sigh and climbed down out of her chair. She half heartedly mumbled a goodbye to Kagome and left to find Ms. Peabody.
Kagome waited for Rin to leave the room before she turned to Sesshomaru. "So what is going on?" Sesshomaru took a seat at the table next to her and spent the next 15 minutes explaining all that had just transpired. Kagome's heart sank when Sesshomaru told her Inuyasha had broken into Kikyo's apartment.
Kagome's mind was swimming with all of the information Sesshomaru had given her. She suddenly found herself to be very tired and overwhelmed. "Sesshomaru I need to go home. I need a shower, fresh clothes and to rest for a while. Can you understand?"
"Of course, I will get my keys and take you." Kagome shook her head. "No I think I will call a cab. You should stay here in case someone needs you. Besides I think Rin would like to spend the day with you." She smiled at him and wrapped her arms around his waist.
"Thank you for understanding. I really need sometime to clear my head. Just for tonight. I will see you tomorrow night after work, ok?" She cupped his face and nuzzled her nose up against his. He pulled her close and buried his face in her neck. "I know you have a lot to work out Kagome. I am here if you need me."
She couldn't help but let the tears well up in her eyes. She rubbed the back of his neck and told him she was sorry. "I will call and check in on you and Rin tonight, I promise." She pulled away from him and picked up the kitchen phone to call a cab. Feeling great remorse and sadness at how screwed up everything had become.
During the cab ride home she felt like her heart was bleeding from all of the wounds and pressure it had been through in the last week. Tears quietly ran down her face as she leaned her head against the door for comfort. 'Why would Inuyasha lie to me and tell me he loves me when he clearly is still in love with that Kikyo woman. He probably thought she didn't have a boyfriend and was trying to make up with her. Well I guess he got what he deserved. Stupid Inuyasha.'
She unlocked her door and came into her apartment. As soon as she did a hand came up from behind her covering her mouth. Another hand came around to grab her around the waist. A gravelly weak voice said "Kagome don't scream. It's just me, please." The hand around her mouth slowly moved away and the one around her waist loosened it's grip.
"Inuyasha, what the hell do you think you are doing here? You have everyone worried sick. You should be resting, not running around the neighborhood breaking into girls apartments." She turned around in his arms to look at him dead on with a very angry face. His face and hair were covered in sweat, his cheeks were flushed and his eyes were half closed. He had no shirt or shoes on, only a red pair of silk pajama bottoms.
Kagome started to notice he was becoming heavy and she was having a hard time holding him up. She pulled his arm up around her shoulder and helped him to the sofa. She went to the kitchen, wet a rag and filled a glass with water. Bringing them back with her she sat down and gave Inuyasha the glass. She began to wipe down his face, neck and shoulders with it causing him to moan with happiness.
"Oh, Kagome thank you. That feels incredible. I am in a lot of pain and I am so exhausted. I had to leave before Koga arrested me. I could hear him talking to Sesh and I knew I had to run. He sat up and turned with a wince. Looking her in the eye he said "Kagome it's not exactly the way Koga said it happened. I WAS the one who stole the jewel originally." Kagome gasped and covered her mouth in shock.
Inuyasha then explained how he ended up stealing the jewel and why he had treated her so poorly the last time he was intimate with her. "You see I got this really stupid thought in my head that if I returned the jewel everything would be ok. I have no reason as to why this stupid idea came to me. It seemed like a good idea at the time." He slumped back into the sofa spent from telling Kagome his tale. "The only thing that troubles me is that no one knows that Naraku now has the jewel. He is still going to blame me for it and keep it for himself. I am not even sure if Kikyo knows. I am so screwed."
