A New Fox
By Tea Ghost Disclaimer, I don't own Naruto, obviously. I have also not read every Naruto fanfiction, nor do I know every Fannon Jutsu ever made, so I apologise for any toes accidentally stepped on. Obviously if someone made a Fannon Jutsu I mistakenly used, know that doing so was not intended, nor do I lay claim to it.

Naruto screamed as he fell down the supposedly bottomless valley. His sensei Jiraiya had pushed him off the top of the cliff as a way of forcing him to use the Demon Fox's chakra and successfully complete his Summoning Jutsu. In the past three weeks Naruto had been working to learn the Summoning Jutsu from his current teacher. With limited success, as he was unable to summon anything more than a tadpole with legs, apparently forcing his sensei to go to drastic measures.
Naruto had already tried several things, like not falling off in the first place, like using his chakra to grab the rockface, only to discover it was too slippery to grip, even with chakra. So now it was do or die, use the Fox's chakra and summon, or not survive the fall.
Naruto concentrated hard, trying to focus on the Fox and getting its power. He then found himself ankle deep in water and in some gold hued, kind of dungeon-like, sewer. He wandered its halls, passageways, and corridors for what felt like several minutes before coming up to a large gated cage. He noticed a large piece of paper with the symbol for "seal" in the centre of the gate. It appeared that the paper was some kind of locking mechanism to keep the gate shut.
Naruto walked up to the large cage, and peered into the dark abyss beyond the golden bars.
"Hello? Anyone there?" Naruto asked the darkness loudly, only to hear his own haunting echo ring back.
After some time though he heard a woman's voice answer, "Hello? Naruto? Is that you?" The voice got louder as it got closer to the threshold between light and the all encompassing black void just a few feet behind the bars.
"Hello? Who's there?" Naruto hesitantly asked, slightly confused.
Out of the void, like walking through an inky portal came a redheaded woman, she had reddish orange and black fox ears on the top of her head, and nine fluffy red and black tipped fox tails. She had long straight red hair that reached her butt, dark blue eyes and an oval face. Her hair had a small black hair clip above her left eye, near her eyebrow. On the sides of her face were two locks of hair that reached her armpits. She was wearing a white near sleeveless shirt under a dark green sleeveless dress that stopped midway down her calf. As she walked up to the bars of the cage her expression showed both relief and gentleness.
"Hello, son." She said.
"What? Why did you call me 'son'? Who are you? The Nine Tails?" Naruto questioned.
The woman giggled, "You could say that, but not the one that attacked the village. My soul is that of your mother, Kushina Uzumaki, the second Jinchuriki of the Nine Tailed Fox. Your father used the Reaper Death Seal to separate the Fox's mind and soul from its chakra and body, which normally wouldn't work but he also sealed me into you as well. Since I was the previous holder of the fox and it had only been an hour since it was ripped out of me, I still had some of the Fox's residual chakra inside of me. So with me and all that fox chakra both sealed into the same vessel at the same time, the chakra bound itself to me and I became the second Nine Tailed Fox. Now, son, what brings you here?" She finally asked.
Naruto chuckled nervously, "Well mom, I kinda need some of that red chakra, you see Pervy Sage kinda threw me off a cliff and I need the chakra to perform the summoning Jutsu. He's training me for the final part of the Chunin Exams." He explained while scratching his head.
"WHAT?!" Kushina Screamed, "SO RIGHT NOW YOU ARE FALLING OF A CLIFF!? WHY DIDN'T YOU LEAD WITH THAT, Y'KNOW?!"
Naruto retreated into himself slightly, as if bracing to be hit, "Sorry mom, please forgive me." He mumbled quickly and quietly.
Kushina was a little concerned, "Naruto, you act like I am going to hit you?" She asked.
"Sorry, it's just that, there's these girls my age, Ino and Sakura, they're both loud like you, and when I do stuff they don't like they hit me. Even though I like Sakura because she's kind and pretty, I wish they wouldn't hit me." Naruto responded with his head down, nervously.
Kushina was now royally pissed, how dare these bitches harm her baby! But her anger would have to wait, "Naruto as much as I would want to talk to you more about these...harlots...we are running out of time, though time is slowed in the Mindscape it does not stop. Based on how long I've felt your presence here, I'd imagine it's been only a second or two. I will give you the chakra but after that, drop! your! teacher! I will take over your training for the exam. Also, to come back here just meditate and focus on me, alright. Couple more things, don't tell anyone about me yet, they may just try to buff up the seal and prevent us from talking. Finally, fist bump your sensei when you get back up there, I want to have a few, 'words' with him."
Naruto nodded and then felt a rush of near limitless power as he was ejected from his mindscape.
Naruto woke up falling as power surged through him and he changed. His skin glowed orange, like fire, his eyes were red with fox slit pupils, blotches and streaks of black were all over his new skin. The chakra formed a high collared, loose sleeve, open cloak. His whisker marks became thick black bars on his face.
On instinct Naruto manifested nine chakra tails that impaled both sides of the valley. Momentum carried him a few feet further down, but he used his tails to slingshot himself to the top of the crevasse.
Jiraiya had been looking down the cliff for about thirty seconds now, hoping that Naruto would get the summoning down. He became very worried very quickly when he felt a strong surge of Nine Tails chakra. Looking closely he saw a mass of burning light...a mass of growing burning light. Jiraiya jumped back when he saw it rapidly approaching. He then saw the large orange flaming blur shoot out of the canyon and into the sky.
He saw it land in front of him, a ball of orange fire. Jiraiya got up and slowly approached it. He got into a fighting stance when the mass stood up and started to resemble a human. Jiraiya saw as the flames dispersed, the glow receded into the person who now looked a lot like his new apprentice. At the same time, he felt the Fox's chakra disperse.
"Naruto, is that you or the Fox?" Jiraiya cautiously asked.
"Wow, y'know, thanks for the vote of confidence Pervy Sage." Naruto retorted.
Jiraiya relaxed, "Well it was kind of hard to tell brat, good to know it's you by the way."
Naruto nodded, "Pervy Sage, She wanted to talk to you, please put your fist to mine. It will somehow allow you to see her." Naruto said.
"Sure brat, no problem." Jiraiya responded slightly confused and worried.
Jiraiya did as instructed and found himself in the same dark, gold coloured wet dungeon. Beside him was Naruto, who started to walk down the halls. Deciding to follow his apprentice, Jiraiya moved alongside Naruto. Eventually they came to a large gate and surprisingly, a familiar redheaded woman just beyond the bars.
"What? Kushina? Is that really you?" Jiraiya asked?
Kushina nodded, "Minato was very smart, he separated the Fox's mind from its body. He also sealed me in here with its chakra, making me the new Nine Tails. Pretty neet y'know, right?"
"Impressive, though you'll forgive my scepticism." Jiraiya responded.
"Feel my chakra, you'll find it's a perfect mix of both Nine Tails chakra and my own." Kushina shot back, "Also, you don't need to believe me, Minato sealed some of his chakra in here as well, just try to remove that paper on the gate. It will activate his little failsafe and you can hear it from the horse's mouth." She explained.
"How do I know that won't release you?" Jiraiya questioned hostilely.
"Well me and my clan helped design this seal. I can break out any time I want, but to answer you more directly, that tag is only a cover to the actual sealing matrix underneath, the actual lock. So unless you have the key on you, uncovering it is harmless." Kushina informed him.
"Well about that, the toad Minato left the seal key on, is kinda in me." Jiraiya said, embarrassed.
Kushina put her face in her palm and shook her head, "Unbelievable, Jiraiya you idiot, why the hell do you have the key on you?!"
"Safe keeping, and besides isn't that a good thing, I mean if you were the Fox, you'd be glad I have the key, seeing that you don't want me to have it here, that should prove it's really you, right?"
"Jiraiya! What if Minato didn't make this gamble!? What if I was the original Fox!?" Kushina screamed, her hair floating in her signature nine tail style, her actual fox tails adding to the effect.
"Well sorry, Kushina. Forgive me if I didn't think I'd be coming face to face with the Nine Tailed Fox!" Jiraiya shot back, "By the way, like the changes, you looked hot before but now, with the exotic fox features now you look straight up div-" Jiraiya said smoothly before being interrupted by Naruto punching the back of his head hard enough to put Jiraiya face first into the watery floor.
"WHAT THE HELL PERVY SAGE!? THAT'S MY MOM!" Naruto roared as his sensei impacted the ground.
"Wait, Jiraiya is this 'Pervy Sage' who threw you off that cliff?" Kushina asked, "That's the perfect nickname for him!" Kushina fell backwards in full blown laughter.
Jiraiya slowly got back up, "yeah sure, laugh at my expense why don't you."
Kushina slowly calmed down as well, sitting up she continued, "Well, you did deserve that for hitting on a widow and mother in front of her child. Naruto, since Jiraiya can't, I need you to remove the paper, or at least try to."
Naruto nodded as the water level rose and formed into a pillar at his feet, raising him to the paper seal tag. As Naruto gripped the bottom corner and began to pull it away from the gate, a bright flash occurred and his wrist was grabbed by a ghostly hand. The figure it belonged to grabbed him and pulled him back to ground.
"Hey Minato, glad to see you show up, your stupid sensei won't believe it's really me." Kushina spoke, slightly annoyed.
"Well dear, it's good to see that my hail mary worked and you're alive, but I can understand Jiraiya-sensei's doubt and concern." Minato Namikaze, The Fourth Hokage and the figure who dragged Naruto away, responded.
"Minato, it's really you. Well I guess that means that Kushina really is the new Nine Tails, sorry for doubting you Kushina." Jiraiya said as he scratched his hair.
"Well all is forgiven Sensei, I just need to undo the sealing matrix in here, it won't release Kushina from within Naruto, but it will loose her restrictions. She will be free within the mindscape rather than in this cage." Minato explained as he went to the seal.
Minato lowered the paper tag and ripped it off, exposing the Uzumaki clan swirling lock design. Blue flames conjured on his fingertips, a smaller version of the Eight Trigrams Seal bled onto his palm and complex writings appeared on his wrist and down his forearm. He placed his hand onto the lock and rotated his wrist, opening the spiral. The gate then slowly opened as Kushina walked out and Minato backed up.
Kushina threw her arms up and twirled around, laughing joyously all the way. She then twirled around in Minato's arms and fell back into Minato. The couple fell to their butts, looking completely carefree as they sank into their embrace. Kushina leaned back and shared a kiss with her husband's chakra spirit.
Their moment was ruined however when they heard a shout, "Hey! Fourth Hokage or not, who said you could be so comfortable kissing mom like that!" Naruto's voice rang.
Kushina laughed genuinely amused while Minato was severely confused, "What do you mean Naruto? Of course I'm comfortable kissing Kushina, we've been married since we were eighteen. I'm your father just like she's your mother."
Naruto recoiled as though he'd been physically struck, "WHAT!? you're my father?! Well, I'm no longer angry, though seeing my parents kiss I might just be sick." Once he finished talking Naruto wobbled and fell over comically.
Just before hitting the ground the water sloshed around and caught him. Naruto was then floated over to Kushina and Minato.
"So, this is what he's grown up to look like, god he looks what, ten?" Minato spoke absently.
"According to what I know brats's twelve years old, and I have to wonder, are you here to stay Minato?" Jiraiya said.
Kushina and Minato both frowned solemnly, "Sorry Sensei, what you see before you is just a chakra spirit clone made by a dying man. I only have so much time before I fade away, just long enough to see my son, open or close the seal, and leave a Hiraishin seal tag behind so Naruto can learn it."
Kushina turned around and hugged Minato and after a brief kiss, she conjured a blank scroll, handing it to Minato. He opened the scroll and laid his palm on the centre of the paper, sealing text flew out from under his hand and spread out over the scroll. Minato removed his hand to reveal a complete Hiraishin tag formula.
"This should be everything required to learn what made me the Yellow Flash. It will tell him how to use the Jutsu, how it works, and how to make his own tags." Minato spoke as he and Kushina got to their feet, and as he rolled the scroll back up and handed it to her, "Goodbye Kushina, thank you for-" he was cut off by Kushina kissing him.
"-Minato, we already did this when we were impaled over that altar you placed Naruto on. We don't need to do it again, just...hold me while you go." Kushina said through tears.
Minato nodded and wrapped one arm around Kushina's back and one around her waist. Kushina grabbed Minato's back tightly as she silently cried into his shoulder. The pair stayed like that for about a minute before Minato started to glow and become increasingly transparent, it was not much longer before he disappeared completely. Kushina then fell to her hands at the loss of stability afforded by Minato. She cried for a little while longer before she made her way over to Naruto. She placed his head in her lap and ran her fingers through his hair.
After a moment or two Jiraiya decided the personal family moment was over and he could re enter the picture, "Kushina, shall we discuss some things?" He asked.
Kushina nodded while still idly playing with her son's hair, "Yes, I will be taking over his training 'til the final Chunin Exam. I will need you to remove his name from whatever summoning contract you had him sign, toads right? By being my Jinchuriki he will only ever be compatible with fox or Kitsume summons. Just like I was and just like Lady Mito was. I will give him the contract when he wakes up. Oh and one more thing, push MY baby off a CLIFF again and family friend or no, his godfather or no, I will KILL you." she said as she pushed her killing intent into the air, freezing Jiraiya in his place as the full brunt of her Nine Tails power bore down on him.
"S-s-sure K-Ku-Kushina, w-w-w-will d-d-do." Jiraiya stuttered out.
Kushina let up on trying to get her late husband's Sensei to piss himself, "Glad to know we understand each other, also when you leave, drop Naruto off at his home, oh and one more thing, I know you are going to tell the Hokage about this, let me guess, Sarutobi? But aside from him, please keep this on the down low, ok?"
Jiraiya nodded, "Sure, ok."
Jiraiya was then forced out of the mindscape by Kushina.
Once out of the domain of Naruto's mind Jiraiya rushed forward and caught the unconscious Naruto. Slinging the Genin over his shoulder, Jiraiya leaped off to head back into the Leaf Village. Once in the village, Jiraiya began to search for Naruto's home. It took the Sannin little under an hour to find it but eventually he got the right address and dumped the brat onto the bed and left.
After leaving the apartment building Jiraiya made a Shadow Clone to inform Sarutobi about the developments regarding Kushina, Naruto, and the new Nine Tails. While his clone would inform the Hokage, he would take Naruto's name out of the toad summon scroll.
Meanwhile with the Hokage.
Hiruzen Sarutobi, Third Hokage of the Hidden Leaf Village, was sitting in his office doing paperwork for various things when he felt a presence behind him.
"Jiraiya, good to see you. Anything you wish to talk about?" Hiruzen asked.
"Sensei, seal the room. It's important." Was all Jiraiya said simply, as he crawled in through the window.
Hiruzen nodded and directed his ANBU in the room out before doing a series of hand signs, "Ok, the room is sealed, what is it you need Jiraiya?"
Around thirty minutes later Hiruzen sat back in his chair utterly exhausted, "Well, this complicates things doesn't it. It's good to know Naruto now has his mother in his life, but this information can never be known to the villagers. After the exams Naruto, Inoichi, Kushina, and I shall have a chat. By the way, since you failed to report three weeks ago like you were supposed to, you should know, Orochimaru is in the Village and we need to talk about security."
Jiraiya nodded, "I know about Orochimaru, Ebisu already told me. Now, by all means though Sensei, how can I help with the defence of the village?"
Within Naruto's Mindscape.
Naruto slowly woke up in a large grassy field, behind him was a large mountain with many caves. Dug into the rock face of it was a large space with a two story house. Around the field were countless massive trees.
Looking around Naruto discovered that his mother was looming over him, idly looking at him. Still half awake, Naruto pulled his head back a bit, causing Kushina to giggle slightly.
"Hey sleepy head, glad to see you're awake. Now there are some things we need to talk about, ok?" Kushina asked, having not moved since Jiraiya left.
"Sure mom, what do we need to talk about?" Naruto asked back as he rose to sit in front of her.
"Three things, first the girls you said beat you up, second your Summoning Jutsu, thirdly and finally your training which will have its own parts we need to discuss. Starting with the girls, I don't want you to have any more unnecessary contact with them. I don't want my baby to suffer any unnecessary abuse from his fellow ninja." Kushina started.
"But mom, Sakura is my teammate, and I like her. She's super nice when she wants to be, and she's really pretty." Naruto retorted.
"Naruto, they...she abuses you to the point that you fear any woman with a raised voice is going to hit you. That's not alright. About her looks, beauty is only skin deep, ugliness runs far deeper. She may be nice occasionally or has been nice in the past, but that's not who she is now, her ugliness is vast." Kushina argued.
Naruto looked down, realising that his mom was right, "O-ok, I won't hang around Sakura more than necessary."
Kushina nodded, it was harsh to let a crush go, but the sooner her son got out of the abusive relationship, the sooner he could move on, "Good. Secondly, you will no longer have the toads as your summons. You simply aren't compatible with them, mainly because of me. Because I am the Nine Tailed Fox, and I'm inside you, you are only compatible with fox summons. So as the carrier of the kitsune contract, I present this to you." She pulled a large scroll from behind her back, "As the last holder of this contract, I took the liberty of conjuring it here for you. Just hold onto it while you wake up and sign it just like you did the toad contract."
"Ok mom." Naruto said as he took the scroll, "Wasn't there a third thing though? If I wake up, won't we not be able to talk about it?" He asked.
Kushina laughed a little, "Oh Naruto, so much to learn. No Son, we will still be able to talk, you just have to think about what you want to say. By thinking of your response I will be able to hear you as though you were talking. I can also hear what you hear, and see what you see. And you get access to my senses as well, mainly my ability to sense negative emotions, like when people lie or want to hurt you but don't say they do. But that's only the tip of that iceberg. You will also get enhanced hearing and smell because of me, so make sure to shower more, I know how teenage boys are y'know. Just be sure to cut the mental connection to me so I don't have to see you do it, oh and same if you and any lady friends decide you want to be intimate." Kushina finished with a slight shudder.
Naruto naturally blushed at his mom's reference to his possible future sex life, "MOM!" He whined.
Kushina enjoyed her son's embarrassed look, "I'm only teasing you Naruto, but I might want to suggest some moves for you to use that will really have her enjoying herself. Trust me, she'll have her eyes in the back of her head with the tricks I know."
"MOM!" Naruto shouted as he grew even more red with blush, "Why would you even know these things?!"
Kushina roared with laughter and fell back from her seated position, "Naruto I married your father at eighteen, I was twenty four when my original body died, that's, if you don't count the nine months I was growing you, that's five years to learn everything your father brought home from Jiraiya that he wanted to try."
"MOM!" Naruto was now glowing light red.
"Oh I know it's not what you want to hear but you did ask, and besides, how do you think I got pregnant with you? You did get at least sex ed at the academy right?" Kushina continued to tease her son.
Naruto was starting to wobble slightly, "Mom, I'm starting to feel a little light headed, and sick, please."
Kushina helped brace her son and said with a giggle, "Ok, I'll stop. Now get out there and try summoning, I'll help build and limit the chakra you will need to make sure you don't summon something truly monstrous and scare half the village."
"Ok, and mom, thanks for being here. I know I didn't meet you until now, but...now knowing that you were with me this whole time, it brings me some, I don't know, closure? To know that I wasn't alone." Naruto gave his mother the strongest hug he could give before he left the mindscape.
Naruto woke up in his room, holding a large scroll. He sat up and rolled off his bed, walking a few steps away from his bed, he laid down the scroll and unfurled it. Scanning through the only two names on it Naruto noticed something, both previous holders of the contract were Uzumaki.
As Naruto signed his name in blood he thought to his mother, 'Hey mom, I recognise your name, but who was this Mito? Are there other Uzumaki out there?'
Not that Naruto could see it but Kushina got slightly sad, "Well Naruto, Mito was the first Jinchuriki for the Nine Tails, and was the First Hokage's Wife, as well as the only known female double S ranked ninja. As for other Uzumaki, possibly. We came from the Uzumaki clan of the Village Hidden in the Swirling Tides. Four of the Five Great Nations feared our sealing and chakra abilities so they attacked us, destroyed our home and killed most of us, those left scattered. We are the last of the royal line though, thus making me clan head, technically, and you my only proxy and clan heir." She explained.
Naruto finished putting himself into contract, 'I think, I want to add to my dream, to be Hokage, and to reunite the Uzumaki clan.' He said as he rolled up the scroll, causing it to disappear in a puff of smoke.
"That sounds like a nice dream son." Kushia said happily, "Now, get ready to do the Summoning Jutsu. You'll do the hand signs, I'll handle the chakra manipulation by using your chakra, ok?"
Naruto smiled and prepared himself, "Sure thing mom, let's do this!" He said as he bit his thumb, drawing blood. He then shot through the hand signs, "Summoning Jutsu!" He shouted as he slammed his hand down onto the floor.
When Naruto's hand touched the ground a small sealing array formed under his palm and a large cloud of smoke formed. As Naruto pulled his hand away, the smoke cleared and revealed an Albino fox kit.
The small fox looked around the room before she spoke, "Are you the one who summoned me?" She asked.
"Yeah, I did, I'm Naruto Uzumaki, My mom was the previous fox summoner. What's your name?" Naruto answered and asked.
The fox tilted its head, "Lady Kushina? I've heard stories about her, you're her son? Well, either way, my name is Mimiki, youngest kit of Lady Kitsune and the Mighty Nine Tails, Kurama."
Naruto was slightly dumbstruck, "Uhhh, I am sorry to inform you but, if you mean the Old Nine Tails, The fourth Hokage sealed his soul and made mom the New Nine Tails, sealed inside me." Naruto told Mimiki.
Mimiki was thoroughly shocked, "What?! N-N-New Nine Tails?! So I'll, I'll never know my father?" She asked breathlessly.
Naruto picked up the small kit and brought her to his chest, speaking as he pet her, "I'm sorry. If it helps, I'll never know my father either. It's a sad thing neither of us asked for, but maybe we could help each other get through it?"
Mimiki cried into Naruto's arms, "Y-y-you kn-kn-ow, th-th-that w-w-wou-d-d be ni-ccce."
Naruto held the crying fox in his arms till she calmed down an hour later.
After she calmed down, Naruto set Mimiki down and she realised something, "You said your mother was Lady Kushina, and that the Fourth Hokage made her the New Nine Tails? How?" After another brief moment Mimiki was caught up to the situation regarding the Nine Tails, "Thank you for telling me this, I will inform my mom and the rest of the pack of this. If there is nothing else?"
Naruto smiled sombrely at Mimiki, "No, there is nothing else."
Mimiki nodded and disappeared in a poof of smoke.
Kushina thought it time to get Naruto back into training, "Ok Naruto, time to get to training, fortunately I used to have a chakra suppressing bunker I used for my Nine Tails chakra training. It won't allow any chakra out, so no one should feel you using my chakra. I made the seals myself, once inside the only way out is to know the formula key, so theoretically no one would disturb you. While we are there we will cover your Uzumaki clan Sealing Jutsu training, your learning of how to manifest and use Chakra Chains, your Taijutsu, your learning how to use my chakra, and finally your Ninjutsu."
Naruto was slightly surprised, 'Uh, that sounds like a lot, and we only have like, a week.'
Kushina laughed, "Naruto my son, don't ever question the ability of Shadow Clones, it's how I became one of less than five known female S ranked Konoichi."
