Danny stepped out into the Burke's backyard. The weight around his ankle that had been an almost-constant of the last few years was gone.
"Congratulations!" Everyone cheered. Danny held up his glass in a salute and joined everyone on the grass, a wide grin on his face. Even Jason was here.
"When are you coming home?" he asked.
"That's funny, coming from you." Danny had heard the stories of Jason's homecoming from Dick. "And not for a few weeks. I have some things to finish up at the FBI."
Jason was disappointed but he understood. The Red Hood was starting to draw a lot of attention in New York, even with Nightwing appearing with the Titans again. Or maybe the sight of two Gotham vigilantes in New York at the same time was part of it.
He would have to return to Gotham soon. But, after so long apart, neither of them would be happy to see the other go.
"You did it, Neal!" El cheered.
"So, what next?" Diana asked.
Danny grinned. "Well, I have work on Monday. And then, I might go travelling. I've been in New York for too long and I have family to go see."
"In Gotham?" Peter said, a worried frown on his face.
Danny chuckled. "Gotham's not a bad place, Peter. I'll be fine."
Peter didn't look convinced but El wished Neal all the best when he meets his family.
"What are they going to think about the ex-Con thing?" Jones asked curiously.
Danny laughed. "I'm not the only one who's been arrested." He winked. "And I think one of my brothers is still on your most wanted list."
"Neal, that had better be teasing." Peter's smile quickly turned to a frown. "Neal."
Danny smiled at Peter. "It's a joke. But, considering that Gotham has the likes of Catwoman, who some of my family admire, I don't think they'll mind too much."
"Sounds like getting caught might be the bigger disappointment," Diana commented.
"I know you're joking but you're not exactly wrong."
"Time for cake!" El said as June walked out carrying the box.
Three weeks later, Bruce Wayne was having a gala. This one was different to the previous ones of the year as he held it at his Manor. It was a rare sight since he mostly preferred to hire out fancy buildings.
Danny checked that his suit was spotless and ready before seeking out Dick in the crowd. The party hadn't started yet but there were people running around and getting ready.
One of those people was Mozzie. Danny had been surprised to find his old friend when he landed in Gotham. Alfred had told him that Moz was learning from him but Danny hadn't believed it until he saw it himself.
Moz was guiding workmen back and forth and also helping Alfred prepare the grounds for the party. Danny was looking for his employer and brother while also cataloguing all the things that had changed over the years.
He found himself in the residential wing, where all their rooms were kept. Brushing a hand over the closed door to the room he had possessed when living here, Danny let himself be lost in memories for a moment.
Following Jason through the halls. Learning to pick locks from Jason and Dick. Playing hide and seek while also dodging Alfred's attempts to get them to clean their rooms.
Danny had a lot of memories from these halls that he hadn't allowed himself to dwell on.
"Penny for your thoughts?" Dick asked, appearing from his room.
Danny sighed and turned to his older brother. "Just recalling the time Jason and I spent together."
"What? No me?"
"Dick, half the time you spent with us was overcompensating for the fact that we just overheard a big fight between you and Bruce," Jason commented, popping out of the same room. He wasn't dressed in a suit but he also wasn't making an appearance tonight.
Dick puffed up his cheeks like he wanted to say something but there wasn't anything he could say. They were right, he had been absent or apologetic or angry during the time Danny and Jason were living here. It had been a huge wakeup call to come back to Earth to find Jason dead and Danny gone.
After a moment he deflated and held out his arms.
"I know I messed up with you two, but I would like to believe there's still a brotherly connection. I haven't taken Tim or Damian snowboarding or to the local library where someone decided to con the librarians into letting him into the back, or breaking into the school to turn the clocks forward-" Danny laughed at the one, it had been his idea. "-I have to be more responsible when it comes to the younger ones. Not with you two."
"More like you didn't know what to do with two new brothers."
Dick rolled his eyes. "Yes, Jay. That too. I'd like to think I've gotten better over the years."
"He did keep contact with me," Danny pointed out to Jason. "You know, the whole 'not telling me you came back' thing aside."
"He also didn't mention you to Tim or Damian."
"Because both of them are nosey and would have hunted him down," Dick pointed out to Jason.
"I'm not going to complain. Tonight is going to be interesting because of it."
Jason sighed. "You know what, I think I'm going to get out of the way of you two. Tonight is going to be chaos."
Danny adjusted his vest and fell into step behind Dick. It was time and he was nervous.
What if they didn't like him? What if they did? He had heard that Damian didn't like anyone aside from Dick.
"Tim, Damian! Can you come here, please!"
Following Dick's call, Damian came out quickly. Tim popped his head out slower before noticing Danny and coming out.
"Uh, hi?" Tim said nervously.
"Good evening," Danny responded with a slight bow.
"This is Danny, he's going to be your guard for the evening."
"Grayson?" Damian's voice was almost a high pitched squeal.
"What? Really, Dick?"
"He is the best of our team and the people down there expect you two to be visibly protected."
Damian huffed. He glared at Danny. "I do not require guarding. Least of all from someone who looks like he would lose to Drake."
"Hey!"
"Looks can be deceiving," Danny responded. "Do not fret. I will be around you but not interacting with you."
Damian clicked his tongue and walked away.
Tim ran a hand through his hair. "Sorry about him. I'm Timothy Drake-Wayne. Nice to finally meet you, Danny."
Danny took Tim's hand with a sigh. He could tell from the tone of Tim's voice that he had figured him out.
"What gave me away?"
"Nothing!" Tim squeaked. "I just- I followed Batman since Dick was Robin. I paid attention when Jason was adopted. I knew about you, I just never asked what happened."
Danny had no idea how to respond to that.
"Tim, why didn't you say anything?" Dick sighed. "Did you not question Danny disappearing?"
Tim looked at his feet and mumbled something.
"What was that?" Dick asked.
"I had a few theories. One involved Danny having also died and Bruce hiding it. I mean, he never talked about him so-"
Danny felt his eyes twitch. He really couldn't wait to shove his face into Bruce's and see what he thought. Thankfully, he had been updated on how Jason had handled his first few months back in Gotham and he really couldn't blame him. Aside from the killing.
Danny felt like punching Bruce in the face and destroying everything he could get his hands on. He had been assured that was normal for their family.
"Well now Timmy." Danny grinned, a grin that combined Jason's dangerous smile and Dick's happy grin. "Welcome to the team."
Tim decided to stick near Jason or Dick for the night.
Damian slipped through the crowd and followed a waiter out of the room. Time to get out of here and to his real work. There was an entrance to the cave near the kitchen, all he had to do was enter the right code into the elevator-
"Ah, Damian! There you are!"
The fool that Grayson had hired was standing by the elevator. He gave a smile and a wave, reminding Damian of the eldest for a moment.
"I thought something had happened to you! You should probably head back in, come with me."
