Epilogue
Everything was quiet as I lifted my suitcase up onto the freshly made twin bed, looking around the room in both wonder and uncertainty before opening it, a small sigh escaping me. This was it, the last step before crossing the finish line into my junior year of high school. Or third year of secondary education? I wasn't completely caught up in what the terms were.
Either way, it didn't matter. We were assigned dorms and would be meeting our roommates and house parents before orientation began and I still had some reading up to do on what was required of me as an exchange student along with figuring out who I was assigned with through the English as a second language program, which was ironic since it was my third language.
The room was smaller than the one I had been assigned at Whitney Prep, even though it held two beds loft beds with desks underneath and a double closet that I was rather enthusiastic about. No more dealing with folding clothes or having to iron the press lines of my blazer at six in the morning. Counting the hangers out, I was able to separate them so that we would have the same amount, taking my clothes out of my suitcase and spreading them out on the bed before ripping the plastic off of my bundled up uniform and pricking myself with a loose pin. Uniforms were going to make me look like a poser no matter where I went in life, but I couldn't deny that I liked the maroon color and that a sweater vest could be worn with the cotton yellow button up.
What could I say? I was a regular fashionista…
Packing my things away safely, I took the pictures Wyatt had given me and placed them on the desk, cussing myself out for not bringing sticky tape with me so that I could hang one or two up. Instead I took a moment to thumb through them for what was probably the hundredth time, a sad smile forming around the corners of my mouth as I did, only vanishing as I jumped with a startle at the sound of a key fiddling with the doorknob.
It opened after a moment of hesitation, a tall and lanky blond fumbling his way in before apologizing to me for what I could only assume was existing.
"Where're you from?" He asked with a heavy Cockney accent that made me thankful he had decided to use a short sentence, a skinny finger pointed the direction of the pamphlets on my bed welcoming me as an exchanged student.
"Japan." I mumbled, deciding not to be the person who would have normally ignored him. "Sort of… born and raised in Russia."
My broken English made it awkward to try and get my point across, something that was obvious as he raised an eyebrow at me.
"Lukas." He said, extending a hand to me. Reluctantly, I shook it.
"Kai."
It was clear that he didn't recognize me, likely unaware that I was different than anyone else who currently walked the halls. No sense of the posh ego I had become so accustomed to.
"Goin' down to check out any clubs later?" He asked. "Third years are bein' required, did they tell ya' that?"
I nodded, only half confident that I understood what he was saying. It had been mentioned to me that we were required to choose an extra curricular, be it either a club or volunteer work, but no one had been able to get me a translated pamphlet, causing memories of my first day or sophomore year to spring back to me.
Everything was different, yet it all felt oddly the same. Now as I continued to get the last of my clothes put away and belongings in their place, setting the laptop my father had gotten me for my birthday on my desk and grateful beyond belief that I could avoid having to sign in at a computer lab in order to complete my homework, I couldn't help but feel a sense of relief wash through me.
It wasn't the end, it was just a new beginning.
It wasn't goodbye…
It was just see you later…
It's incredibly bittersweet to think that this story has finally come to a conclusion. To be honest, it's one I would still love to mess around with, maybe clean up a bit someday or get rid of a few scenes that didn't end up going anywhere. Not all of my loose ends are tied up, but at the end of the day I think that I managed to do what I set out to do. Kai and Wyatt will always be one of my favorite ships for any anime and I'm never going to stop shining as much light on them as I can, but I must admit that if I ever continue this universe, it's unlikely that a sequel will be nearly as long as this ended up being. I'd like to revisit the characters someday and hopefully tell a second part to their tale, but it would involve me having a plot with a distinct beginning, middle and end which is something I would need to put some thought into. Either way, I know I'll never fully be done writing, even if I move onto different character or god forbid a different anime.
I wanna give a shout out to those who have followed, favorited or reviewed. The extra boost of dopamine when I get those emails can really keep me going sometimes and I'm especially thankful for those of you who stuck around even when I was in a funk and didn't write for a few months.
Also an extra shout out to Inyoface! It's insane to think that it's been over ten years since this shit all started. We were young, now we're old people, don't think that me being done writing means that I'll stop pressuring you to update, if anything my boredom is going to just make me bug you about it more and this will absolutely include when you crash at my place later xD So if you guys are still itching for more of this pair, go check out her story This Is England for all of your Kyatt goodness.
Also a shout out to all other fanfic authors. There's no writing for money here, there's just good old enjoyment of the fandom and sometimes that makes it mean so much more.
Peace!
