Agent Snyder finally passed me the paper he was holding. It was the fake background information gathered from the database about Abel Vales. Demetri had found this before them. We still needed to figure out the reason behind the alias and the other people visiting Kate Monroe. I stared at the information blankly.

"We found out the meaning behind the alias; Why Lauren said you should check the visitors." I heard Agent Snyder say as my eyes finally landed at the bottom of the page.

My hand shook, staring at the page as my blood boiled. I heard Sam scooting closer to look at the bottom of the script to see what made me angry. Tears of frustration gathered, making the print blurry. I couldn't afford to be weak right now. I swallowed the lump in my throat before blinking back the wetness in my eyes.

One of the FBI officers had scribbled the words Abel Vales in capital letters and played around with the alphabet. There were many scratches and dents on the page, trying to find a solution to the little game Riley was playing. And then there was a triumphant answer at the end, underlined with two sharp lines. The FBI had figured it out.

Chapter 29

BELLA

Before leaving the kitchen, I arranged the last of my cupcakes onto the stands. I glanced at the clock displaying time in one of the guest rooms. Shit, I had forty minutes to get dressed. As I paused in the hallway, I noticed Edward was escorting two people toward the entrance with Sam and Skylar in tow. They all looked tensed, including my adorable puppy. She often caught on Edward's energy.

What was going on? My heart skipped a beat. Did it have something to do with Riley's ex-employee who visited Kate under a fake name? Abel Vales. Edward mentioned that the FBI would take over and investigate more about him. We just had to be patient and follow Riley's moves.

Once the people stepped out of the house, Skylar turned on her heel. Her big eyes fell on me, and she pranced in my direction. I bend a little to stroke her face. "Hi, Skylar. You are having a busy day, aren't you?"

Skylar scratched her paws on my sweatpants, trying to hop in my direction. I knelt so she could come closer. She leaned against my shoulder, and my heart melted. I hugged her and stroked her furry back. "What happened, honey? Did something upset you?"

Sam left with the two men, and Edward returned inside the house. He seemed surprised to see me in the hallway. Furthermore, I was comforting our dog. I watched him try to hide his anxiety while he sauntered toward us.

"Is everything alright? Who were those people?" I asked.

Edward ran a hand through his hair. "FBI Agents. They found some vital information through investigation."

"It's bad, isn't it?" My voice suddenly shook. Edward wasn't telling me what they found out.

He sat next to me on the hardwood floor with a gentle smile. "Bella, everything is going to be alright. We're going to be safe. I promise. We'll talk about everything after the gin company meeting today."

I gazed deep into his green eyes, so beautiful and open. It wasn't difficult to decipher that Edward was keeping something from me. There was fear hidden under his gaze and a tightness in his eyes. His smile wasn't forced, but it wasn't carefree either. It was a smile to comfort me. Soothe me. I had to be patient for a few more hours.

"Okay, we'll talk later."

Edward gazed at Skylar briefly before hugging me from the other side. His unruly hair tickled against my neck. "Please don't go back to your place tonight. We need you."

My lips turned up a little. "Sweetheart, you are leaving for New York tomorrow morning. I'll take Skylar with me."

"I canceled my work trip. So I'm bringing the team here," Edward kissed my shoulder. "Stay with us, please."

I didn't have the heart to leave them either. "In that case, of course, I'll stay."

Skylar walked toward Edward and put her paw on his knee. He stroked her head. "Everything is good, Sky. Come on, help me set up the drinks menu for today. Bella, get ready. Everyone will start arriving any moment."

"Hmm, okay."

He kissed my cheek. "My meetings start on time."

"Yeah, yeah, I've heard that before. So what are you going to do if I show up late? Send me back to my apartment?" I laughed.

"No," Edward brushed his lips to mine. "I will make out with you in front of your work friends. You are, in fact, sleeping with the boss."

My face flushed. "And I love it so much. But let's take things slow in front of everyone. The women coming over are kinda crazy about you."

"Oh, don't be jealous."

"I'm not," I ran my hand through his hair. "I think their attraction toward you will die after realizing you had an embarrassing fedora-wearing phase in high school. Maybe I should put those photos on display so they can see them when you give a tour of the house."

Edward growled playfully as he reached for me. I laughed, scooting away from him. I grabbed the wall for support before rising to my feet. Edward was quick on his feet too, but I had a few extra seconds to exit.

"I am faster," Edward said just as he threw me over his shoulder. I gasped and squirmed against him.

"Edward, put me down!" I couldn't help but giggle. Skylar wagged her tail as she circled around us, wanting to join. "Skylar, tell daddy to put me down."

"Let's make it even. You put those photos out, and I'll show the footage of your first and only ballet lesson from preschool. Renée gave the video to me last month, you know. I was going to save it for a different time, but today seems like the perfect opportunity—"

I gasped. "You wouldn't! Edward!"

He chuckled but stopped short when the front door shut. Edward slowly landed me on my feet, and I shot him a quick glare. I turned to see Bree and Maya rooted by the coat closet next to Sam, staring at us with shocked looks. My face instantly turned scarlet. Skylar was the first one to move as she rushed toward them. Sam was trying hard to hide his smile.

"Alright, go," Edward pushed me inside his bedroom as he sauntered toward the entrance to greet them.

It took me fifteen minutes to get ready for the meeting. I checked my white dress in the mirror before slipping into a pair of flats. Emilio and Manuel had also arrived when I entered the Great Room. Edward and Peter were talking to the boys by the makeshift bar. I found Maya and Bree curiously staring at the portrait above the fireplace. It was a picture of Edward, Skylar, and me from Alice's wedding reception. I loved that photo of us.

"Bella!" Bree gave me a tight hug, followed by Maya.

"Hi! I'm sorry about earlier," I blushed again. "Um, I hope the place was easy to locate."

"That's why we left early," Maya chuckled before sipping her cocktail. "This house is insane. Can we get a tour later?"

"Yes, of course. Edward was planning to show everyone around later. Did you guys meet Peter?"

They nodded with starstruck grins. Bree sighed dreamily. "Peter Nash is as nice as I thought he would be. I can't believe they are best friends in real life," She whispered, tilting her head toward Peter and Edward. "I always see it on social media, but this feels weird."

I rolled my eyes but chuckled. "You'll get used to it."

Skylar entered the room with Siobhan and Sam behind her. She barked to announce the new entrant, and I laughed. God, she was so adorable. Skylar did love escorting people who came over. She made a beeline for me with an eager face. I bend a little to stroke her head.

"Hi, sweetie. Thank you for helping today. You are the best girl, aren't you?" I whispered happily. I led her to the cabinet to feed her a treat. She yelped before leaving the room.

Siobhan and I quickly hugged before she went over to meet Edward at the bar. The rest of the team showed up within the next few minutes. Alice was the last one to arrive. She brought her bubbly and energetic aura to the room. Edward led his sister around the room to make introductions. He brought her to me at last with a chuckle.

"This is Isabella Swan. She is a Content—"

Alice cut him off. "Oh, stop it!" She gave me a tight hug, and we shared a laugh. "Bella, this dress is so cute! Do you want to go shopping after this?"

Edward shook his head at me in response to her question. I cleared my throat. "I can't today, sorry. I have some work to do. How about tomorrow?"

She pulled back with a sigh. "I'm leaving for LA tomorrow. Mom and I have to meet Nadine Huntington to discuss her wedding prep. She changed her venue for the fifth time. The wedding is in three months. Now she wants a vineyard wedding."

"Ooh, that sounds magical. You should give personalized wine bottles as wedding favors."

"Hmm, she wants that too. Let's see."

"Alright, stop with this wedding crap," Edward interjected. "Take a seat. You are already late, Alice."

Everyone settled on the couches, and Edward sat in his usual armchair. Skylar walked around the room before taking a seat by his feet. I watched her put a paw on Edward's shoe to protect her daddy from the new people in the house. So adorable.

While I expected the meeting to be formal, it became the most fun I have ever had while working. Edward and Siobhan were warm and funny, keeping a light atmosphere to make everyone comfortable. Peter and Alice seemed open to everyone's opinions and shared their vision for the brand too. Along with the drinks, delicious appetizers were served around the room.

I had often been part of meetings with Edward where he was seated at the head of a table. He had an intimidating aura and an eye for detail. But today, he ensured everyone felt at home in his home. Edward had been working on this campaign in his study for the last two days, and his concepts were exceptional. It truly made us realize why he had the reputation of being one of the most creative minds in advertising.

Nobody wanted the meeting to end. I could tell everyone wanted to spend more time with Edward, hear some of his personal work experiences, and laugh at some of his and Alice's childhood stories. I knew everyone here would be bragging about this meeting at work to make the others jealous.

Edward stared at the large whiteboard full of ideas, with the most important ones highlighted in a separate corner. His gaze shifted to Skylar when she walked toward me. I stroked her furry face with a chuckle. She was done with the meeting.

"I think we should head outside for lunch," Edward suggested. "Skylar is officially bored."

Siobhan snorted. "Does she call the shots around the house?"

"Of course. Bella and I just live here. It's Skylar's place." He joked. "Since it's a beautiful, sunny day for a change, we've made arrangements outdoors. Tia will lead you through."

Everyone was reluctant to leave the space but slowly rose to their feet. Skylar took the opportunity to jump onto my lap. I held her close with a deep sigh. "My baby," I kissed her head. "Do you want to join everyone for lunch?" She put her paws on my arm as her big brown eyes watched people leave. Everyone stroked her head as they left the room.

"She loves the attention," Edward commented with a laugh.

Alice touched her furry back. "Skylar is the cutest. And so smart. Can I keep her with me for a few days?"

"Not a chance," I whispered. Skylar hopped away to leave the room.

"Where'd she go?"

Edward checked his watch. "She'll probably fall asleep any minute. Let's go."

I stood up and brushed the dog hair off my dress. Edward interlaced our hands we followed Alice and Peter out of the room. I kissed his cheek. "That meeting was amazing. I bet everyone loved it."

"Do you think so?" His green eyes looked relieved. "That's the hope."

There was a long rustic al fresco dining table arranged close to the house in the expansive backyard. I watched everyone's astonished faces as they gazed at the ample open space, pool, and meadow. Everything was stunning. The table was overflowing with empty wine glasses and cutlery. I noticed there were no chairs at the two ends of the table. Edward pulled out an aisle seat for me and settled on my right, next to Emilio. Siobhan, Alice, and Peter had also dispersed on both sides to mingle with my other work friends.

Emily arrived with the servers to pour wine for everyone. Conversations slowly began brewing around the table as we shifted from work to informal chatter. Emilio asked Edward numerous questions about the property, which he patiently answered. Bree and Maya, across from us, listened with rapt attention. Edward asked the trio about their hometowns and their families.

The chatter would slow down after a course was served since everyone was starving. The food was delectable. Emily loved cooking for large crowds; this was her dream scenario.

"Bella spent all morning making desserts for everyone," Edward gloated as the servers arrived with the mini cheesecakes and cupcakes.

"Bella is our family's unofficial pastry chef," Alice added. "Emmett and Jack demand brownies once a week from her."

Edward shook his head. "I yell at Emmett, so he corners Bella in the office these days. He says Rose is craving them, but I don't know how many brownies reach her."

"Oh my god, this is so good!" Siobhan shouted excitedly after taking a bite of her cheesecake. "Bella, this is the best cheesecake I have ever had! Did you go through any training? You could do this on a professional level."

My face flushed. "Um, I have loved baking since I was a child. I used to be home alone most of the time. My brother loved cookies and brownies. I kept that going during high school, college, and later years."

"Amazing."

Alice chuckled. "I keep telling Bella we should open a little bakery in town."

"I'll invest. I can bake bread." Peter flashed me a charming grin.

Edward mock glared at them. "Don't poach one of my employees."

"That is a tempting offer." I played along.

He smirked. "You like working at the office way too much to leave."

"Ugh, it's true," I muttered, making some of them laugh.

I smiled, watching everyone enjoy the desserts and finish them to completion. After eating half my cheesecake, I passed the rest to Edward, who finished it within two bites. He didn't focus on his calorie intake on the weekends. I put my head on his shoulder and sighed. I was too stuffed to move.

Edward pressed his lips against my hair. "Full?"

"Mm, yes."

"Peter is going out with Alice and Jasper after this," He whispered quietly. "We have late dinner plans with him since he is leaving tomorrow morning. Plus, we stood him up last night."

I giggled. "You encouraged that idea."

"It was your plan," Edward accused me while his hand gently caressed my open back. "I can't say no when you're being evil." He pecked my lips, making me blush.

Post-lunch, Edward and I gave my colleagues a tour of his entire house while Alice, Siobhan, and Peter left. He detailed the architecture and showed artifacts he had collected from all over the world. Skylar woke up from the commotion when we entered the Family Room. She drank her water before bringing her leash toward us. I excused myself before taking Skylar out for her break. Everyone was still in the same room when we returned, chatting about something.

"We waited for you," Edward said sweetly. "Didn't want to lose anybody during the tour."

When I took Skylar's leash off, she ran toward Edward. He bent down to kiss her head. "Hey, Sky. You had a great nap, didn't you? Do you want to help daddy show everyone around the house?" Her furry face gazed at me. "Well, mommy's coming too. Don't worry."

"Is that a—a vase?" Manuel cocked his head to the side, pointing toward the bookshelf.

Edward nodded with an amused smile. "Yes, that is a gift. From Renée, Bella's mother. She was doing some—What was it, Bella?"

"Abstract pottery class," I replied and chuckled. "My Mom keeps sending over her abstract creations. Edward likes to display them around the house. She sends them, particularly because he does that." My friends laughed.

"Art needs to be appreciated." He shrugged. "Alright, let's go upstairs."

Edward didn't show the bedrooms or study to keep a few things private. Everyone was starstruck in the two-story library. There was another portrait of Edward and me hung on an empty wall. It was from our yacht trip to the Bahamas.

"That's Bella's space," He pointed toward the desk and shelf filled with my vintage artifacts. "It has her work documents and the weird things she buys through online bids."

Everyone at work knew about my online bids, so it wasn't a surprise that everything was on full display. It took another thirty minutes to show everything, including the rooftop terrace. Edward held a warm smile as he and Skylar waited on the porch to say goodbye to my work friends as they left.

As the last car made a left from the entrance, Edward turned toward me with a thoughtful face. All the joy and humor were gone. I watched Skylar run toward Seth, who was walking toward the house from the staff quarters. Edward interlaced our hands and led me straight to his study inside the house. He locked the door. I was clueless about his actions when something from a few hours ago came back to me. The FBI Agents were here to inform him of something. Edward had put on a charade in front of everyone, being the perfect host. But now that it was just us, we had bigger things to discuss.

"Take a seat on the couch, love. I'll be right there," Edward kneeled in front of his desk drawer to grab a few files.

The room darkened as the remnants of the sun disappeared behind the grey clouds. I was experiencing heart palpitations in his large, cold study. My throat suddenly felt dry. I bounced my knee anxiously, playing with my fingers. Edward rose to his feet with the files, and his forehead creased with a frown.

"Bella, are you feeling okay?" He grabbed a bottle of water before walking toward me. I took a few sips of water while he settled at my side. My heart calmed a little when Edward interlaced our hands. "Everything is going to be alright, Bella. We are stronger together," He kissed the back of my hand.

I put my arms around Edward and held him close. I breathed in his soothing scent. Stronger together. Get a grip, Bella. "Tell me everything."

"First things first," He stroked my hair. "You have to stay here with me. We are increasing security on our premises. This is not a request at this point; I'm not letting you return to your apartment."

I pulled back and sighed. "Okay, I'll stay here." If my staying here would help Edward, I was willing to take residence at his place.

"Great," His green eyes looked relieved. He opened the first file and passed me a piece of paper. I read the scribbled letters.

A-B-E-L-V-A-L-E-S

S-A-V-E-B-E-L-L-A

My breathing caught in my throat. Oh my god! I felt tears building in my eyes, staring at the paper. Abel Vales was not a real person. It was an anagram. Save Bella. Riley was warning Edward to save me. Was something going to happen to me? I looked at Edward with a lost expression. I didn't know how to react.

Edward cradled my face in his hands. "You are going to be safe, baby. I promise. This is all a distraction from his trial. His verdict is in two weeks; I don't think Riley will be released anytime soon."

"I hope so," I sighed shakily. "I'll stay here until then. I need you close."

"Of course, my love."

My eyes fell on the files. "What about these?"

Edward put his hand on the files and gazed at me with a gentle yet firm expression. "Our conversation can't leave this room, Bella. The FBI asked for blueprints of the house to find loopholes and increase security in the weaker spots. I gave them a copy of the normal blueprints. These files have additional details of this house that nobody knows except Demetri and Dad."

I frowned curiously. "What details are you talking about?"

"Every secret security detail and the codes for them. We cannot trust anybody with this information. Nobody."

"Why did you tell Carlisle?"

"I trust Dad with my life. He knows everything. More than Emmett, Jasper, Sam… even you," Edward ran a hand through his hair. "People don't suspect that he would be aware of anything. We never discuss the shit about Riley or Grandpa Anthony in front of the family. It's usually at the hospital or in my office. Always remember that. If you cannot contact me during an emergency, call Dad."

"Okay."

It was a smart move on Edward's end to involve Carlisle. He was the least suspectible family member. Noble, compassionate Carlisle. Surprisingly, Edward was the closest to him in the family, not even his Aunt Carmen or Uncle Eleazar. There was always so much more to Edward than met the eye.

"We're going to practice these routine codes for emergencies, alright? Let the servers and the staff leave; we'll have the house for ourselves. You need to know a few bank details and important locations around Seattle."

I frowned. "What locations?"

He flipped open one of the files with a list of locations with addresses. Each site had a name and sentence written below. For example, "You walk into a store, ask for this person, and say this line. You can get whatever you want during an emergency. These are my connections in sketchy parts of Seattle. They are good people. Cash, fake IDs… anything. I think we already have your fake IDs in all locations."

"W—What?"

"Passport and stuff. Don't worry, it's just a precautionary measure," Edward read something on the paper. "And the cash limit is $100,000. We can't keep much cash lying around."

It was overwhelming to take in the new information. I never imagined the magnitude of what went behind the scenes of Edward's security detail. He was detailing everything to prepare me for the worst-case scenarios.

I was startled out of my musings when there was a knock on the door. Edward squeezed my knee before rising to his feet. I could hear Skylar's faint movements from the other side. When the door opened, I saw a tall, muscular man beside a petite blonde. The blonde was on her knees, playing with Skylar. It was evident that Skylar had met her. However, I had never seen the two people before.

The woman rose to her feet and threw her arms around Edward. "Mr. Cullen! It's been too long!"

Edward laughed and kissed her cheeks. "Hi, beautiful. Come inside. It's time to make introductions."

"Of course!"

As the two people entered, Skylar made a beeline for me. She stood between my legs and rested her head on my knee. My stress melted a little, staring at her adorable furry face. She sat near my feet after a big stretch. I rose to my feet when Edward approached with the duo.

"Bella, let me make your formal introduction with two important people. This is Zoe and Polo."

My eyes held a tinge of recognition as I shook their hands. I knew Polo was Edward's informant. His most trusted security personnel. Zoe was the woman who worked as Riley's assistant. She helped him exchange the ledgers when he broke into the building the night we met. To my recollection, Zoe had also visited my apartment after somebody broke in, but she looked different that night. Her hair was a different shade.

I shook hands with the pair. "Nice to meet you."

Edward put an arm around my waist. "Polo worked in Riley's security for a few years until the arrest. His identity was compromised recently, so he is joining our team after a break. He will be overlooking your security."

"Oh," I was a bit taken aback by the information. As somebody constantly under death threats, I should receive security. It felt weird.

Polo nodded politely. His deep-set eyes held a firm yet warm expression. "Miss. Swan."

"Please call me Bella."

Polo glanced at Edward, who shrugged. "You often don't argue. A little about Bella, Polo. She can throw a mean punch, maybe a kick or two. Don't hover and give her space. She doesn't like to be driven around."

I smiled at Edward. "Well put."

He kissed my cheek. "Zoe, this is my Bella. You've been to her apartment before, I believe. Bella, Zoe worked as Riley's assistant until last year. She has helped me through numerous issues in the past. She'll probably have a different hair or eye color the next time you meet. Zoe works as a fence. Always on the move. But, she makes time for me."

Zoe winked at him. "Always, Mr. Cullen. Speaking of," She pulled out an envelope from her bag. "Tell Demetri that I am faster."

"You settle that dispute in person. Thank you so much. We'll keep in touch."

"Of course. Nice to meet you, Bella. I should get going. Bye, Skylar!" She blew a kiss to the dog before leaving the room. Polo followed her out and shut the door.

Edward gazed at me with a brilliant smile. "Bella, I know it's too much to take. I don't expect you to understand everything right away. Just know that I'm doing everything I can to protect you."

"I know," I rested my head on his chest. "I love you."

"I love you more, Bella."

I stroked the envelope in his hands. "What's in there?"

"Let's check, shall we?"

Edward sat on the couch before perching me onto his lap. We shared a laugh as Skylar jumped on the seat beside us. I stroked her face. "Hi, honey. Are you going to help us here?" She let out a small bark. "Good girl."

I observed Edward open the envelope. "My informants heard chatter that one of Riley's Seattle hideouts was still active. We wanted to know whether it would lead us to Rory Johnson or something else."

"Isn't that man in custody?"

"Yes."

Images of the building followed by a woman getting into a car. She looked unfamiliar. Her brown hair was messy, and dark circles were under her eyes. Who was she?

"No idea," Edward answered my question out loud. "We'll run a trace on the number plate. Let's see if we find something."

"I guess we'll just have to wait until then."

The following two weeks flew past us in a blur as we focused on our work and other responsibilities. The number plate turned out to be fake, and there was no trace of the woman. Demetri and his team were still looking into it. While my relationship with Edward will always be an essential part of the gossip at work, people were getting used to it. Since I barely saw Edward at work, it helped our situation.

The blurry days were breezy and fast. There was barely any time to cling to the moments. I felt like everything was coming down to the moment of Riley's verdict during the first week of May. Edward and I were home on the day of his ruling. Neither of us would be able to concentrate on work.

We watched the event live in his Family Room as the jury found him guilty on all charges and sentenced him to 15 years in prison with a fine. Of course, 15 years wasn't long enough, but it would get him off our backs for a long time.

"They are moving him to a high-security prison in June," Edward murmured as he read the headline. "That's a fucking relief. He'll die in there."

"What do you mean?"

"There are many people from the Brazilian mob in the prison where he'll be transferred," He pointed at the facility's name in the news. "Many of their drug operations came to a halt after his arrest. There will be a bounty on his head. He won't survive one week in there."

I swallowed hard. "Riley doesn't deserve to die for what he did. Dying is easy. I want him to suffer."

Edward held me close. "At least I know he won't be anywhere near you."

I smiled and sat astride his lap. His green eyes held a deep sated relief. I stroked his tousled hair before holding his handsome face in my hands. I gave him a gentle kiss. There was something that could make Edward happier.

"Since we have a day off, I was wondering if you could help me with something." I mused.

Edward reached for the hem of my tank top. "Of course."

I slapped his hand away with a chuckle. "Not that," He pouted. "I need to pack the boxes in my apartment by the end of this week. The owner is moving to Seattle in two months, and he was wondering if I could terminate my contract earlier than the stipulated time. Since you have recently invested in a real estate company, maybe you can help me find an agent?"

I watched Edward's face light up, but he maintained a straight face. "I do have a place in mind. It's a bit on the outskirts."

"Ooh, I don't like the long commute. Too much hassle." I made a face.

"You haven't heard the best part yet," He played along. "It comes with two roommates. The first is the most adorable dog in the world, and the second roommate works in the same building as you. So you can carpool to work. His cars are all-electric. Helps the environment a little."

"Well, the dog sounds perfect. But, I'm not so sure about the second roommate," I pretended to think about it. "Tell me more about him. Does he leave his wet towels lying around the closet after his shower?"

"The roommate will work on that. He is a nice guy, a good cook, plays the piano, and keeps his surroundings clean. You know what else? He'll take you to the office on time so you won't be late for any meetings," He smirked.

I glared at him. "Sounds like a smug smartass. I don't like that category."

"The house has an outdoor pizza oven and a library, two of your favorite things." Edward shrugged.

"It sounds too good to be true, Mr. Cullen," I touched my forehead to his. A small smile appeared on his face. "I'm almost convinced."

"The house can guarantee romantic date nights and unlimited movie nights."

I giggled. "I love my new home already. I think I'll take it. Can I get a bedroom to myself?"

"Absolutely not. The roommate believes in sharing resources. Let me show you the room," Edward cradled me to his chest before lifting me. I put my arms around his neck with a happy sigh as he carried me toward the bedroom. "This is our bedroom."

"Our bedroom," I repeated with a blushing face. "Hmm, I like the sound of that."

Edward kicked the door shut before leading me toward the bed. "Bella, this was fun, but I need you to say it."

I laughed. "Edward, I would love to move in with you in this beautiful home. I can't wait."

"Fucking finally! God, you're so stubborn," He dropped me onto the middle of the bed before hovering over my body. Our lips met for a much-needed kiss, and I could sense our relief and euphoria as we reconnected. His touch was always so innocent yet wanton. Our clothes were soon strewn around the room as we got lost in our throes of passion. It was poetic to call it throes; our love was intense. Something I had never experienced before. It was tender yet fiery, delicate yet strong.

We remained wrapped under the sheets in the later hours, sharing anecdotes from work and family. There was so much to discuss; we never ran out of conversations. Finally, however, our time did run out. Seth texted that he was back with Skylar from their outing with Jack.

"Should we have everyone over for dinner in a few weeks?" Edward asked as he got dressed. "Maybe just the parents."

I snuggled deeper into the covers. "Rose's baby shower is here in two weeks. Rose likes the large terrace in the Great Room."

"Maybe some other time then. Don't make any plans for next weekend. We're going to Chicago. Aunt Carmen will not take us inside if Skylar is not with us."

I laughed mid-yawn. "Noted."

Edward walked over to kiss my lips soundly. "I'll be in the study. You are already half asleep."

"You tired me out."

He smirked. "That I did."

The Great Room was overflowing with guests for Rosalie's baby shower, as Alice had invited all her work friends and family. Rose was the last one to arrive, looking beautiful but exhausted. Jack was skipping at her side with a big grin. He was slowly coming around to the idea of becoming a big brother. Ula, the babysitter, was also invited to the event.

"Oh my god, this is so beautiful! Alice!" Rosalie and Alice shared a long hug.

Alice had kept a floral theme for the event that complemented the background of the lake. All the presents were in a separate corner with ample space for a food station. Rose went around meeting her female friends and family. I helped Emily with the food prep and desserts. Hearing stories from different pregnancies and watching Alice's horror was fun. Skylar and Jack entertained everyone throughout the duration.

Edward descended from his study after the guests had left and it was just the family. He hugged Rosalie before grabbing a drink. He choked on the liquid. "This tastes weird."

"There's no alcohol," Alice explained with an eye roll.

"Of course."

Rosalie suddenly groaned, and the room went dead quiet. She sagged in her seat before her blue eyes looked around. "What?"

Esme walked closer to her. "Rose dear, are you going into labor?"

"Pfft, no. It's probably a false alarm. I'm not due for another three weeks." She waved her off. "I mean, wouldn't my wa…" She trailed off.

Jack bounced on his toes. "Ew, mommy pee!"

Alice shook her head. "Jack, your mommy didn't pee. Her water broke," Alice's blue eyes widened at the realization. "Oh my god! Your water broke! I don't know what to do!"

I panicked as everyone went to hover around Rosalie. Jack started crying, and Skylar barked, adding to the commotion. Edward looked anxious from the chaos everywhere.

"Alright, enough!" Esme said in a deafening volume. That's where Edward gets it from. The room went quiet. "Bella, call Emmett. Tell him to meet us at the hospital. Alice, get a car out front. Emily and Angela, help Rose to the car. Others follow us to the hospital. Edward, you have Jack."

Everyone immediately got to work, and Emmett panicked on the other line. I calmed him down as he made his way to the hospital. Rosalie was slightly anxious but put on a brave face for Jack. Edward was holding Jack, trying to console him.

"Jack, you can meet your baby sister soon. Aren't you excited?" She clutched her protruded belly in a death grip. "Mommy is going to the hospital now. You can stay here with Uncle Edward and Aunt Bella, alright?"

"I wanna come, mommy!" He insisted with a teary face.

"Baby, you can meet your sister after she's here. It's almost dinner time, isn't it? Why don't you play here with Skylar? Hospitals are boring." She wrinkled her nose.

I nodded at him. "We can have your favorite dinner tonight. Right, Uncle Edward?"

Edward nodded. "Of course."

Rosalie squeezed my hand. "Thank you so much, guys. Let Ula stay here to look after him."

"Good luck! I can't wait to meet the baby!" I kissed her cheek.

Rosalie gave Jack a tight hug and kiss before leaving. Edward and I spent the evening with Jack, distracting him from his demand to go to the hospital. Emmett called to speak to Jack before his bedtime. Ula gave him a bath before we put him to bed. Rosalie was still in labor, waiting for the dilation to reach 10 cm.

Since we had an early dinner with Jack, Edward and I continued reading our book in the Great Room. With our combined interest in reading, we decided to read a book together. Our pick was a John Steinbeck novel.

Ula hovered at the doorway with a hesitant face. "I should get going."

"It's late," I checked the time on my phone. "Why don't you stay back for the night?"

Her eyes went big. "No—No, that's alright. I'll get a cab."

"Bella is right," Edward added. "You should stay back. If we go to the hospital, there should be somebody to keep an eye on Jack."

"Okay, thank you."

I rose to my feet. "Let me get you a change of clothes."

Since she was the same size as me, I gave her one of my new pajama sets. I even showed her my collection of books I often read in the Family Room. I knew she was a fan of classic novels. It was too early to go to bed; she could read or watch television.

"Thanks a lot, Bella."

"No problem. Let me know if you need anything else. You can sleep in the guest room next to Jack's. We'll be down the hall."

"Okay."

I returned to the Great Room, where Edward was waiting for me. Skylar lay on the opposite end of the couch and shut her eyes. She liked to lounge around with us. Then, around quarter past eleven, Emmett called us with the news that Rosalie had delivered their daughter. Since everyone else was going to the hospital, we decided to join them.

We informed Ula about our departure before leaving. She seemed just as excited about the baby. Edward called Stefan from the car and told him to stay inside the house.

"I don't think Jack will wake up in the night," I mused. "He stays with us once a month."

"It's not him. The nanny," Edward whispered.

"Ula is lovely. You are suspicious of everyone. Last month, you thought my friend from yoga needed help."

"I stand by that. She said that her favorite movie genre was Nick Cage. What the fuck does that mean?"

I groaned. "Let's not rehash that discussion, sweetheart. Ula is just nervous around you."

"Why?"

"You have an intimidating stare sometimes," I admitted, making him frown. "You are still the sweetest man I know."

His confusion was replaced with a grin. "That's better."

The private patient room buzzed with people as Alice, Jasper, Esme, Carlisle, and Rosalie's parents gathered to meet the baby. Rosalie was seated on the bed, exhausted but smiling with elation. Emmett was holding the tiny baby while Alice hovered over them. We went straight to Rose and hugged her tight. She had a long labor.

"How are you doing, Rose?" I whispered and adjusted her stray hair.

Rosalie winced in pain as she shifted a little. "I've been better, but it was worth it. How's my little guy?"

"Jack is great. He's fast asleep."

"He didn't trouble you after I left, did he?"

Edward chuckled. "Rose, he's four. He got distracted. Plus, Em spoke to Jack on the phone. We'll bring him over in the morning."

"I can't wait for Jack to meet his little sister." She yawned.

Esme, who was holding the baby, glanced at us. "Edward! Bella! Come meet the baby."

My stomach filled with excitement as we walked over to her. Carefully, I cradled the baby in my arms. I stared at the adorable baby with the biggest smile. She had blonde curls, a cute button nose, and pink lips. Unfortunately, her eyes were shut, unaware of the crowd gathered to meet her. Edward put an arm around my waist, and the other hand stroked her head.

"She's so beautiful," Edward murmured.

Emmett gave us a proud grin. "Perfect, isn't she? We were waiting to announce her name. Babe, go ahead." He nodded at Rose.

"It's Ava Grace Cullen."

"Aw, that's an adorable name," I murmured.

Ava shifted a little in my arms before her eyes fluttered open. Her blue eyes adjusted to the light, and her mouth formed onto an 'O' showing off her dimples, like her father's.

"Hi, sweetie," I smiled. "It's Aunt Bella and Uncle Edward. We're so happy to meet you."

Edward touched her tiny fingers. "You were supposed to wait a few more weeks. After that, we were going to be birthday buddies."

"Such a sweet face. I can't wait to babysit Ava."

"Yeah," He chuckled and paused for a moment. "I want one."

"Me too," I thought about it for a moment. "Two years?"

"Yes, two years." We shared a smile, feeling hopeful about our prospective future.

Last year, I was in and out of therapy, trying to gather my life and deciding to move out of Phoenix. My life had a 360-degree turn within twelve months. Yet, this was the happiest I had ever been. Things felt easy with Edward, natural and effortless. Of course, we had our little fights about dinner, movie picks, and work, but I embraced every minute of it.

I was with someone who never cared enough about anything in my last relationship. Fighting was futile when the person wasn't mentally in the room. James was a significant part of my past, but his memories quickly faded. I had a new life ahead of me with Edward and Skylar. The more time I spent with my family and friends, the more I realized how many life experiences I had missed out on. I visited Forks monthly or asked my parents to come for a weekend. I never wanted to take my time with them for granted.

Alice and I were out for lunch on a sunny Saturday in the early days of June. Edward was golfing with Carlisle, Jasper, and a few business associates. We were discussing travel, food, Ava, and Edward's birthday.

"Well," Alice nibbled on a piece of cheese. "That is the one event where I stay away from Edward. He doesn't like to make a big deal about his birthday, and if someone does… all hell breaks loose."

I crossed my arms over my chest. "I feel like celebrating Edward's birthday."

"He won't get mad at you."

"Hmm, let me think of something. I'm already working on his birthday surprise."

"My brother is going to love it."

I began preparation for Edward's surprise birthday party the same night. Edward was missing his friends since he hadn't met them since March. It would be great for everyone to reunite on his special day. I invited his family from Chicago; he wouldn't want a party without his beloved Aunt Carmen and Uncle Eleazar. Jasper helped me with the friends' guest list since I hadn't met most of them more than once.

Two days before his birthday, I played with Skylar in the Great Room post-dinner when Edward rushed inside with his phone. He grabbed my hand and led me toward the Family. I could hear Skylar urgently following us.

"Edward, what's going on?" I asked as he switched on the news.

"... that the Facility Van carrying Riley Biers for his transfer to a high-max prison was overturned on the freeway, and the fraudulent billionaire has gone missing. The nearby towns are on high alert as federal agencies have been called to increase manpower."

My stomach twisted into uneasy knots. Oh my god. I was sick to my stomach that Riley had escaped from secured police custody. He must have planned everything in advance. Two words came back to me from months ago. A note that described his intentions. Save Bella. He wanted to harm me. Within a few minutes, Edward's phone began buzzing.

He groaned. "It's my PR. My family is going to start calling. This is the worst."

I couldn't stop gazing at the screen. My life was in mortal danger as I sat here. But I knew Edward's team would protect me. He was all the hope I had. Edward tipped my chin in his direction until our eyes met. His green eyes orbs were thoughtful.

"I'm okay," I whispered.

Edward stroked my cheek. "Bella, we'll be safe. Riley isn't going to show his face anytime soon. He's going to take shelter and lay low. It might take many months, maybe a year. But, we'll find him before that and hand him over. His bank accounts are seized; that man has no source of finance."

His words brought relief to me. Edward was right. Riley had a lot to deal with before plotting revenge against us.

"Thank you," I touched my forehead to his.

We received a few calls from the family to discuss Riley's escape, but everyone was optimistic that he was out of resources to fund any schemes against us. The FBI will be quick and efficient with their search. They did it before; they could do it again. So I put my focus on Edward's birthday celebrations instead.

The night before his birthday, I came home an hour early to make a mini birthday cake for Edward. Exactly the type that he brought me on my birthday last year. I met his family for the first time that night. He found out by accident and ended up helping me set up my bookshelf in the living room of my tiny apartment. Since I refused to celebrate, he presented me with a small cake to celebrate the final hours of my birthday.

I was baking a vanilla cake with buttercream frosting for his party, so I made a simple mini chocolate cake. The cake was ready and in the fridge before Edward arrived home.

Since I was making dinner tonight, I had asked Emily to leave early for the night. Edward entered the kitchen with a charming grin.

"Welcome home," I smiled as he hugged me from the back.

"Thank you, my love. How was work?" Edward whispered before planting gentle kisses from my cheek to the side of my neck. "I thought we would come home together."

"I finished early." I sighed shakily as goosebumps rose on my skin. "Go, freshen up. Dinner is almost ready."

"It smells delicious. I'll take Sky for her evening walk."

"Sure, sweetheart."

Edward spun me in his arms, making me gasp. I giggled when he lifted me and connected our lips for a long, hard kiss. It was a long day at work. I felt the exhaustion melting away with our kiss. I was wobbly on my feet as he put me down. He kissed my cheek before leaving the kitchen.

"So, what do you want to do tomorrow for your birthday?" I asked Edward as we cleared the dinner table after our meal.

He chuckled. "Can we spend it like a normal day? Maybe we can go to Whistler during the weekend? Or LA? Peter and Tanya are in California for the next few weeks. It's been way too long since I've met them. Alice and Jazz can join us."

You'll be seeing them tomorrow, Edward! Aah, I was so excited about tomorrow's party!

"A weekend trip sounds great. Skylar loves the beach."

Edward checked an email on his phone. "I have a meeting in an hour with a few executives from the London office. I'm sorry. It slipped my mind."

Perfect.

"That's alright. I think I'll wrap up some work too."

"Are you working on the summer catalog for the gin campaign?"

I rolled my eyes. "Yes, but you can save judgment until I hand it over. I've been working on it for three days."

"I'm sure it'll be great, Bella. Just like everything else you do."

"Thanks, I needed to hear that." I cracked a smile.

At a quarter past midnight, I found Edward seated on the expansive balcony overlooking the lake. He often liked working there on warm nights. I put the cake on a small, dainty plate with a candle. After lighting the candle and arranging a knife, I carried the plate toward the Great Room. I stood in the doorway and fished out my phone. It took me a minute to open the application that controlled the light switches in the house. Finally, I turned off the lights in the room, grabbing Edward's attention.

His head snapped toward the doorway just as I entered, holding his cake. My lips curled into a smile, watching his surprise. Edward shut his laptop before sliding it away. I put the cake on the glass table with a satisfied sigh. Things were going as planned. I perched onto his lap and turned sideways to get a better look at his face. The moonlight cast a beautiful shadow on Edward, making his face glow.

I cradled his face in my hands. "Happy Birthday, Edward."

He answered with a beaming smile. "Thank you, love."

"I love you so much," My voice was heavy with emotion. I connected our lips for a heated kiss and felt my heart thundering. There was an excess of love inside me for this man, which continued to overflow daily. He went above and beyond to love, take care of, and make me smile… I just wanted to make his birthday special.

We pulled back after running out of breath and shared a smile. Edward brushed his lips to mine. "I love you more, Bella."

"I know you don't like celebrating—"

He cut me off with a shake of his head. "This is perfect. Just the two of us."

I adjusted myself onto his lap and drew the table closer to us. "Okay! Make a wish!"

Edward hugged me, shut his eyes, and blew on the candle. He laughed, watching my enthusiasm as he cut the cake. It took us four bites to finish the cake to completion. "Delicious cake, Miss. Swan. As always."

"You are very welcome," I pecked his lips.

"Best birthday ever."

I giggled. "I think I can make it a little better."

"What do you have in mind?" His gaze turned scorching.

My cheeks flushed as I offered a playful grin. "You might have to come to our bedroom in five minutes."

"I'll clean this up. I can be patient for five minutes." He sounded like a kid about to enter a candy store.

"Sure you can." I eyed the tent in his trousers.

I turned on the lights of the Great Room while making my way to the bedroom. I stripped out of my clothes before slipping into the delicate lingerie I had picked for tonight. It was a black lace transparent babydoll with a matching lace G-string. The fit was great, but I doubted it would be wearable again. Edward was always insensitive to my lingerie, often tearing it apart with no regard. I brushed my hair before donning a short black silk robe. I left it open to give a glimpse of my lingerie.

Edward peeked inside the room as I added finishing touches to the dimly lit space. His eyes went wide as I sauntered in his direction. He swallowed hard before stepping inside and locking the door. I laughed when Edward reached for me with a hungry expression.

"No, no. Patience," I whispered, reaching to take off his t-shirt. "Since it's your birthday, I thought you could use some pampering, sweetheart."

He groaned. "I don't have the patience."

"Well, try," I unfastened his trousers. "You will be rewarded." I slapped his hand away, reaching to touch my ass.

Once I undressed Edward, I helped him onto the bed before I put on some gentle music. The dim lights created a sensual glow as I began his massage. Edward fixated his gaze on me, lingering on every inch of my body. I started with long strokes on his shoulders and chest and watched his body relax from my touch. I took my time, teasing him, and he was barely holding it together with every passing minute. The fragrance of fresh organic coconut oil wafted around us and made his skin glow.

I massaged around the crease of his thighs, amused with his painfully hard erection. When I teased him enough, my hand inched toward him. I started with a light hand job, and Edward sighed heavily. His chest heaved from the tension, and I heard his low moan. I held his gaze as I leaned down to take his length in my mouth.

"Oh fuck, Bella," Edward grabbed onto my head as I bobbed my head against him. My senses were filled with the scent of coconut. I licked his length, building the tension until he couldn't take it. I resumed my head and felt him stiffen in my mouth. I knew he was close. "Shit, I'm close. Fuck!" It wasn't long until he orgasmed. I licked Edward clean before staring at his spent face with a self-satisfied grin.

"I'll put this away," I turned toward my nightstand. The oil was leaking from the bottle, spilling onto the beautiful surface. "Let's take—"

Suddenly, Edward grabbed the back of my neck before yanking me back to him. I gasped at the sudden force. I found myself lying on the bed under his oil-covered body. "Where do you think you're going?" He whispered against my lips, making me shiver. Edward hastily tossed away my robe. "We're just getting started."

I woke up with a stiff back and an ache between my legs. The room was dark as the curtains were drawn. The alarm rang at six in the morning as if on cue, and the curtains automatically flew open. Edward groaned in his sleep before blindly turning it off. His green eyes fluttered open, and he smiled sleepily.

"Hey, you're awake."

I took his face in my hands and kissed him. "Happy Birthday, baby."

"Mm, thank you." He snuggled against my chest. I stroked his hair in a gentle rhythm. "I have a plan for today."

"You do?"

"Yeah. We'll blow off work and spend the day in bed."

"Aw, sweetheart. That's a great idea, but I have an important meeting with the marketing team at Lime."

He huffed. "Lime? That snooty snack bar company? You know their Chairman is an asshole, right? So don't waste your time with those fucking idiots."

I giggled. "That's a nice attitude coming from the CEO of the company. It'll keep the morale high."

"Aren't you supposed to listen to me on my birthday?"

"People at work might want to wish you. Who knows?" I shrugged. I've said too much.

Edward rested his head on mine on the pillow and narrowed his eyes. "What does that mean?"

I blushed. "Nothing."

"They are planning something, aren't they? Bella, tell me!" Ugh.

"Be nice! They have been planning for a week. You just have to act surprised and eat a slice of cake. Is that too much to ask?"

"Guess not." He mumbled. "But I want you to myself all evening. So I'll make dinner reservations."

"Works," I pecked his lips. "Are you going to the gym?"

"Might as well," Edward dressed in his boxers. "Seth is taking Sky for a walk today. I'll wake you at eight. We're staying in bed on your birthday; I don't want to hear any complaints."

"That I can do." I smiled, and he pecked my lips.

"Ugh, I want to be mad at you, but I can't say no to that face," He pulled the covers over my head, making me laugh.

I woke up when Skylar jumped onto the bed with an eager bark. Edward made a beeline for the shower in his gym clothes. I stroked Skylar's furry face with a chuckle. She licked my face before sitting beside me. "Good morning, sweet baby. Today is a very special day. It's daddy's birthday!" I whispered. "We're going to have a lot of fun tonight."

Edward and I left for work together, but I knew we would return home separately. I was going post lunch to set up the decor for the party. I had explicitly asked Tia to ensure Edward was at the office until five. It would take some time for the family and friends to arrive. Alice was helping me with everything, and Emily was overlooking the catering for tonight.

When I returned home, Emily was already working with the catering staff while I took a separate corner of the kitchen to make the birthday cake. I was baking a double-tier cake since we would have a full house. I was halfway done with the cake when Alice arrived to give her assistance. We weren't planning anything extravagant since Edward would focus on meeting everyone instead of having a full-blown party. We could do that this weekend in LA.

Around four, we finished adding the final touches with the team. Alice checked her watch. "Okay, I'll come back in an hour. Get ready for the evening, Bella. Wear something cute!"

I opted for an off-the-shoulder black mini-dress for tonight. I wore the charm bracelet and daffodil pendant Edward had gifted me last year. I applied a hint of makeup and perfume before slipping into heels. I could hear a few voices coming from the hallway when I stepped out.

"Bella!" Tanya yelled in delight. I found her, Senna, and Peter standing by the coat closet. Oh, right, they were going to travel together. "My god, someone's looking hot!" She gave me a long hug, followed by Senna and Peter.

"I missed you guys. It's been too long." I smiled at the sight of them.

Peter agreed. "Yeah. Is Ed at work?"

"Yeah, I've told his assistant to keep him in meetings until five."

"I bet he is loving that." Peter laughed. "Alright, I need to take a shower. There's make-up on me. I sat in the flight straight after my shoot."

Edward's parents were the next to arrive, with Carmen, Eleazar, and Vanessa. Skylar eagerly greeted them after waking up from her nap. She was excited to have all her favorite people in the same house. Next, Angela and Ben arrived with Eric, who instantly gravitated toward Skylar. Next, Jasper came with some of their common friends from Chicago. Finally, Jake and Leah brought my parents along with them. Charlie and Renée were staying over at our place tonight. I had also invited some of the office executives who were close with Edward.

Emmett and Rosalie were the last to arrive, with Jack and Ula in tow. Rose was holding little Ava in her arms, who was fast asleep.

"Aw, look at baby Ava. Her dress is so cute!" I touched her blonde hair before giving Rose a one-armed hug. "How are you doing, Rose?"

"Well, Ava is a lot calmer than Jack. The routine is a bit crazy, but Ula has been a great help with Jack." Rose gave the nanny a quick smile. "I'll put her down in Jack's guest bedroom."

"Sure!"

Emmett gave me a bone-crushing hug before making a beeline for the tray of appetizers. Jack was quick to run toward Eric and Skylar. Ula followed Rosalie toward the guest bedroom. I took in the room buzzing with people and nodded to myself. Everything was great.

My phone buzzed with an incoming call from Edward. I chuckled and answered it.

"Hi, birthday boy."

He sighed heavily. "Hey. It's almost five. Are you ready to leave?"

"Um, I already left. Alice took me shopping," I lied, making him groan.

"Bella! You promised that I would have you all to myself tonight."

I giggled. "I'm on my way home, Edward. I'll see you in forty minutes?"

"Fine. See you at home. I love you."

"I love you too. Bye." I hung up and turned to find Polo standing in the hallway with an envelope in his hand. "Hi, Polo. Can I help you?"

"This was dropped off at your old apartment an hour ago." Polo passed the envelope before leaving.

I read the sender's name on top. Caleb Blik. My stomach dropped. The same person visited Kate's apartment the day she was murdered. But, it wasn't the name that made my head spin but the address. The address was the same as my former home in Phoenix, Arizona. James and I sold that home after our divorce was finalized in December. This wasn't a coincidence. And the sender's name suddenly sounded fake.

Caleb Blik.

I opened the envelope and inside was a piece of paper with only two details. The name of a person and a contact number. Elia Hives. I gripped the nearest wall for support. That was the third person who visited Kate that night. Wasn't she a small-time model? That's what Demetri found through his background check.

Elia Hives.

What if these names were anagrams, just like Abel Vales? My throat went dry. I reached the nearest cabinet in the hallway to retrieve a pen. I wrote the letters on the same sheet of paper to solve the mystery. I will deal with the contact number later.

C-A-L-E-B-B-L-I-K

E-L-I-A-H-I-V-E-S

My shaky hand tried to create combinations of the first name, but it was a tricky game Riley was playing this time. I jumped when I felt a tap on my shoulder. It was Ula, the nanny.

"Bella, are you feeling okay? I can get you some water. Your face is pale," She whispered, and her eyes glanced at the envelope, but she didn't comment. "Is something wrong?"

"No, everything is great. Where's Rose?"

"Ava woke up, so she's feeding her. After that, the baby will probably go back to sleep. She is a good sleeper," Ula smiled fondly.

I bit my bottom lip as I stared at the nanny with a thoughtful expression. Then, suddenly, I remembered Rosalie sharing something from her gender reveal party about Ula. Emmett called her nerdy because she loved puzzle-solving and books.

"Ula, are you familiar with anagrams?"

Ula smiled shyly. "Yeah, a little. I'm not that great. I mean, I go to a bar that has trivia nights every month. My friend Rhea is great at it. I mean, she has won championships. It takes me a while, and we run out of time by then. We once had to figure out the names of the countries—"

I cut off her rambling. "That's great. I need your help with something. Can you find out if these names are anagrams? Try the first one. It could be a phrase or just words."

"Caleb Blik? I can try. I'm rusty with anagrams."

I played with my charm bracelet. "Maybe it's a sentence? Try something with the letter I."

"You're right," She nodded eagerly. "I, and then we have two Ls. Something like Bill or K—Kill.

"Can you join the next words?"

"I'll try."

Ula wrote down a few combinations.

Bible Lack, Leak Lib BC, Black Bell, Cab Be Kill.

My eyes paused on the last two phrases she made. "What if it's a contraction?"

Ula frowned. "Which letters exactly?"

"I and the double Ls. I will= I'll."

"Maybe. So I'll Beck AB? That doesn't make sense." She scratched her head. "Is this a game of some kind? Quite complicated."

"I'll Be Back," I whispered as the realization hit me.

C-A-L-E-B-B-L-I-K

I-L-L-B-E-B-A-C-K

"Bella, you're right. What about the number? Is it also an anagram of something? It has the Seattle code."

My fingers shook as I dialed the number. I pressed the phone to my ear. The call rang twice before it was answered.

"Ding! Ding! Ding! Bella, congratulations! You did it! Figured out the clues!" Lauren's voice floated from the other line, making my blood run cold. "Don't respond. This is a pre-recorded message. You'll look stupid. How was my challenge? Riley paid me a lot of money for this. Tough, isn't it? You might be wondering why I would call you. There are two reasons. Number 1- I need money. And Number 2- I know where Riley is. You can't meet me, obviously, because I'm in jail. But my accomplice will be waiting to see you. If you have decoded the anagrams, you already know who he is. And it's not Riley. He'll give you the location and amount to be deposited. Nobody can know this, Bella. Or Edward will be shot before he can reach home tonight for his party. We have people everywhere. Crazy, right? Meet him at six! Don't be late, or your boyfriend will be shot," she laughed. "Just kidding. Or am I? Here's the address." She dictated the address before the call was disconnected.

I checked the time on my phone. I had fifty minutes. All I had to do was take the details of the location and amount. I can tell Edward about it after the party. Why did Lauren say I might know the person if I solved the anagrams?

Elia Hives.

But I didn't have the time. I gazed at the nanny. "Ula, can you try to work on the second name, please? It's another anagram. I have some work to do. Text me as soon as you figure it out. It's urgent. And don't tell anybody."

She nodded. "Okay, I'll sit with the baby. Then, I'll text you."

"Thanks! I owe you!"

I grabbed my purse and bumped into Alice at the entrance. She squealed and gave me a tight hug. My mind was miles away from here. "Bella, you look amazing! Where are you off to?"

I gave her a blank stare. "I…" I trailed off, and my eyes fell on the gift-wrapped box in her hand. I stared at the cake printed on the top. "Cake! There was some problem with the cake. I'll get it."

"Come soon! Edward will be here any minute."

"I'll be back in twenty, don't worry!"

I asked Ardy from security to bring one of the cars to the front porch. I groaned internally when I saw Polo stepping out of the car. He held the rear passenger door open for me. "Polo, I'm driving alone, if that's alright."

"Okay, can I please know the location of your destination? I'll be around the same perimeter."

I swallowed hard. "That's alright. I'll be fine."

Polo stared at my nervous face for a moment. "Bella, what was in the envelope?"

"It was a letter about some subscription. Polo, I'm running late. I have to go."

"I'm calling Mr. Cullen." Polo unlocked his phone.

I stopped him. "No, wait. I'll tell you. Don't call Edward."

Once Polo heard everything, he immediately became alert. "Bella, we have to inform Demetri and Mr. Cullen. This could be dangerous."

"Didn't you hear what she said? Edward could die! I don't care if she's lying. I can't risk it!" I hissed angrily.

He sighed heavily. "You are just collecting the details and informing Mr. Cullen after your return?"

"Yes, I'll tell him everything."

"I'm coming with you," Polo said with finality, leaving no room for argument.

"Fine! But you have to hide in the backseat!"

He touched his forehead for a moment. "I can't fit in that small space."

"Well, try!" I smiled sweetly. "Come on. Edward's party starts soon."

Polo sat in the rear passenger seat for most of the ride but awkwardly hid when we were two minutes from the location.

"Is that charm bracelet your Christmas gift?" Polo suddenly asked.

I glared at him through the rearview mirror. "That's a personal question, Polo."

"No, the paw charm on your bracelet is installed with an emergency button. Just press on the back of the paw if you are in danger."

"Why didn't I know this?"

He sighed. "We don't have time to discuss that. Your signal will alert me."

"Okay."

I parked the car outside an abandoned park that was scarcely populated. Barely a few people were strolling at the entrance for their evening walk. I went deeper inside until I spotted the dry canal underneath a bridge. My fingers shook as I checked for unread messages. Ula hadn't sent me anything yet.

If I were meeting someone, I should record the conversation. So I turned on the voice recorder. I stood under the bridge for five minutes and heard my phone ping with a message. It was Ula.

E-L-I-A-H-I-V-E-S

H-E-I-S-A-L-I-V-E

He is alive.

My brain registered the words until a figure emerged from the side of the bridge. My body was paralyzed with fear as James slowly walked in my direction. I shouldn't have left the house until we solved the second word. I was unable to fathom that he was still alive. I attended his funeral. I watched his family mourn for him! James didn't die; it was a ruse for something more. How the hell was he alive?

James walked toward me with an easy smile; his blue eyes were emotionless. His smile was making my stomach churn. I swallowed hard.

"Bella darling, look at you. So beautiful. Edward Cullen is a lucky man," James smiled arrogantly. "No, why are you so scared of me? We used to be married."

"Stay away from me," I snapped. "Are you working with Lauren? Trying to harm my family? Why are you doing this? Think about your parents."

"Money, babe. It's all for the money. Simple as that. Also, Riley told me that I can make you unhappy. The cherry on top." He shrugged quickly as if discussing some news from the paper. It was so easy for him to agree to someone as vile as Riley just to watch me suffer.

I pressed the emergency button on the charm bracelet to alert Polo. "Give the details and get the fuck out of my sight. You are a disgusting piece of shit!"

"Hmm, you would think so, wouldn't you?" He chuckled. "Alright, let's not waste our time." He pulled out a piece of paper from his jacket. "No clues this time. Just a simple location and amount. I need that money by tomorrow. After that, I will offer you details of his hideout."

"Why are you betraying Riley? Weren't you working for him?" I demanded.

"Lauren and I don't want to be on the Most Wanted List like Riley. We don't photograph well." He walked closer to give the paper.

"Put it on the ground and get lost. I'll take it."

James continued walking toward me while I backed against the wall. "Do you honestly think I'm here for just the money?" He pulled a knife from the back and held it against my neck. I gasped as the steel surface brushed on my skin. He smelled like whisky and cigarettes. Revolting. "What we had gone beyond that, Bella. Don't move; I'll slice your skin right off."

Out of my periphery, I saw Polo taking a position at the side. My phone rang, distracting him. He took a small step back to tilt his head toward the screen.

"Bella, now!" Polo yelled, and I took a big step to the side. Before James could approach me, Polo pinned him to the ground with a gun to his head. "Don't move; I'll blow your head right off."

James spat against the dirty ground and chuckled. "Oh, you little shit! Lauren told you to be alone. I knew you would bring this one. You love getting everyone in trouble, don't you? So what are you going to do now? Calling the cops?"

Polo bashed his head against the rocky surface. "You'll spend a few days in hell before that."

I remained rooted at my spot, watching the horrid condition of my ex-husband. How could someone change this drastically in a year? His presence, which once brought me comfort, was now unbearable. I checked my phone to stop the voice recording, and there was a missed call from Edward. I couldn't talk to him right now. I would start crying. He must be at home, surrounded by our family and friends. I wanted Edward to spend one day without any trouble looming over his head.

Ten minutes later, two people arrived at the location, and one was Stefan. I realized what Polo meant by hell. James wasn't going into police custody; Edward's security was taking him somewhere unknown. I had no idea what Edward would do to James. After everything James was doing, I didn't care what happened to him.

After James was dragged away from our sight, Polo approached me. He looked concerned. "Bella, are you okay?"

I blinked a few times but nodded my head. "Y—Yes."

"I've informed Demetri about the news. He will let Mr. Cullen know. We should return home," He said while grabbing the piece of paper James had dropped. "I'll drive."

I sat in the front passenger seat and still couldn't contain my shock at seeing James tonight. So many questions were swirling in my head. Did he expect me to bring security? Was he genuinely deceiving Riley? Or was this just a distraction from something? He wasn't shocked to see Polo with me. Was he already informed that Polo was taking care of my security? Who was leaking information?

"Do you think this was just a distraction to get us alone?" I asked Polo as he started the car. "James knew you would be here."

"The team suspects someone from the FBI or the inner circle is involved."

I sighed shakily. "I mean, we were out here for a reason. Why is that? Is somebody after you?"

"I was an important part of Riley's security until he was arrested. I've heard he didn't take the news well." His eyes tightened. "Riley liked me. Maybe he is."

"Exactly. Riley is angry. That anagram said that I'll be back. Back for what?" I murmured to myself. Save Bella. "We should hurry home. I feel like something is going to happen." I felt sick at the pit of my stomach.

"Bella, we're safe. James is in custody. But, I will be telling Mr. Cullen that you made me hide in the backseat." He tried to lighten the mood.

I chuckled. "Oh, I bet he's going to love that story. Edward trusts you with his life, you know. He always has nice things to say about you."

"Mr. Cullen has helped my family through thick and thin. I owe him my life. My sisters, my mother… they are safe and sound because of him. He is a kind man."

"He's the best." I grinned and gazed out of the window. However, my smile disappeared when I realized we had blown past a signal. "Polo, that wasn't even close to the green."

I turned and found Polo staring at his feet. He glanced at the rearview mirror before looking straight ahead. His face looked thoughtful. "Bella, is your seatbelt secure?"

"Yes, why?" I grew concerned.

"I think we're experiencing brake failure."

My heart broke into a sprint. I tried not to panic. Jake once told me that panic is the worst thing you can do after a brake failure.

Polo took his foot off the gas and pressed on the hazard lights. "This is the evening traffic. Shit." He honked multiple times to warn the other vehicles on the freeway. He slowly downshifted. "Bella, I will drive further away to slow down the car. We don't want to harm others. Are you feeling okay?"

"I'm fine," I said weakly as tears built in my eyes. Polo tried pressing on the brakes again, but his eyes were wide with fear. "What now?"

"Neither of the brakes is working." He continued steering while pressing the brakes. "I will scrape against the guard rail at the side and use the emergency brake. Either of them has to work."

"Okay."

I shuddered to hear the metal scrape against the exterior of Edward's expensive car, vibrating my side while he pulled on the emergency brake. The car slowed down before it could clash with a large tree. I sagged with relief. Polo offered me a rare smile. "You did great, Bella. Let's get out, and I'll call for a backup car. It won't take long."

"Thank you, Polo. You saved our lives. I'm glad you were driving and not me." I took off my seatbelt. "Why is the car still running?"

"The steering wheel might lock up. That's another problem we don't want," Polo's eyes glanced at the rearview mirror. "I saw this van a few miles back. It's best—" Before he could finish the sentence, a large honk yanked me out of our conversation.

I could hear the engine of a nearby vehicle revving as the honk became louder with every passing second until it was deafening. Then, something hit the back of the car with an Earth-shattering force, causing us to skid into the tree. The last thing I remembered was my body flying out of the seat before everything went dark for a long time.

Hi, everyone! Thank you so much for reading this long and late update! I apologize for the massive delay! I couldn't work on it sooner since I was busy uprooting my life and moving to Australia. I'm so happy to come back to resume this story. Review and let me know what you think of this chapter! More to come by this weekend (Hopefully). Thanks again!
