ALL THAT GLITTERS
DISCLAIMER: STEPHENIE MEYER OWNS IT ALL
Chapter 30
EDWARD
"Fine. See you at home. I love you." I ran a hand through my hair.
"I love you too. Bye." Bella hung up.
I let out a frustrated groan before rising to my feet. I rolled up my shirt sleeves and lifted my jacket from the back of the chair. After collecting my wallet, I sauntered toward the reception. Tia was furiously typing at her desk, and I glared at her.
"Any more meetings, Tia?" I offered her a sarcastic grin.
She gulped nervously. "No, Mr. Cullen. I apologize for the scheduling conflict."
"You know, I am surprised that none of them could be pushed around. You could've made any excuses. Did somebody force you to do this?"
"No, Mr. Cullen. It was a scheduling conflict."
"On my birthday, of all days. And my Bella has already left the office! I planned to take her for lunch and then to a drive-in theatre. But I never found the time to call her. They were playing Casablanca tonight. Her favorite movie," I shook my head gravely. "Make me dinner reservations at some fancy restaurant and send me the details."
"Yes, Sir. And Happy Birthday."
My anger dissipated, staring at her apologetic smile. I chuckled. "Thanks, Tia. I'll see you tomorrow. Bye, Samantha." I waved at my second assistant before making a beeline for the elevator.
Besides the small birthday celebration during lunchtime, I had this month's busiest day at work. Tia had accidentally over-scheduled a few meetings, and I hated canceling with international executives. I barely had time to call Bella or inform her of my plans. While I was making up the part where we would go to a restaurant for a simple dinner, it turned into a reality.
The car ride home felt longer than necessary. I couldn't hide my relief when Sam drove toward the front porch of my house. Bella said that she would be home already. A few minutes in her presence, and I'll be okay again. When I entered, I frowned sadly at Skylar's absence by the coat closet. She never missed greeting me. I stared at the empty hallway briefly, hoping to hear her.
"Sky? Skylar? Where are you?" I whistled loud enough for her to hear. My lips curled into a smile when she rushed from the Great room toward me. I knelt to hug her. "Hi, baby. I missed you so much." Skylar wagged her tail, and her big eyes looked excited. She put her paws on my shoulders, and her face seemed eager about something. "What's going on tonight? Where's mommy?"
Skylar barked toward the door, and I sighed. Then she barked toward the Great room. "Is she in there? Let's go."
I kept an average pace while Skylar ran ahead of me inside the Great room. I paused at the entrance, and my eyes widened in shock.
"SURPRISE!" A loud chorus rang inside the Great room as I gaped in stunned silence.
All my friends and family gathered in the same room for my birthday. Everyone was here except for Nonna and Grandpa. Nonna told me in the morning that Grandpa had the flu. This was crazy. I suddenly realized why my meetings went on till five and Bella left early from work. My heart felt full, staring at everyone. There were many people around I hadn't seen for months.
I searched for Bella but couldn't see her in the sea of people. I made a beeline for Aunt Carmen, Vanessa, and Uncle Eleazar. I hugged them both with a big grin.
"Happy Birthday, sweet boy," Aunt Carmen kissed my cheeks.
"Thank you, Mamma. You look great," I whispered, and Uncle Eleazar patted my back before I went to my parents.
I went around greeting the people in the room. It was amazing to see my best friends after months. So many of my Chicago friends were here, and I bet Jasper helped with the guest list. Despite the joy of seeing so many people I loved in the room, I kept looking for Bella. She wasn't here. I was momentarily distracted when Tia and her girlfriend Zafrina arrived for the birthday party.
"I think it was worth the scheme," Tia laughed as she hugged me quickly.
I kissed her cheek. "You did great."
"Bella was so concerned I wouldn't pull this off," She gazed around. "Where's Bella?"
My smile faltered. "Not sure, to be honest."
I went to Bella's mother, who passed me a flute of champagne. "Renée, where's Bella?"
"Oh, she was somewhere here, but I haven't seen her. Bella was greeting the guests the last time I saw her. She must be in the kitchen; that girl is always running around making everything perfect."
Her answer didn't suffice my agitation. Why wouldn't Bella be the first to hug me after throwing a surprise party? Looking at everything and everyone, my girl had been planning this for weeks. Everything was perfect. People were mingling as I went to different circles, asking about Bella. How did nobody know where she was?
I went to my sister at last and pulled her to the side. "Alice, where's Bella? Is she not here?"
"Oh yeah, she went out like forty minutes ago. Some emergency about a cake. I warned her to return on time. Don't worry; I recorded the reaction video. Bella is going to love it." Alice giggled.
"Cake emergency?"
"I think she went to the bakery to get the cake."
That didn't sound like my Bella. My heart began running in my chest. "Have you ever seen that woman buy anything from a bakery?" I gave my sister an incredulous look. "She bakes everything at home. Do you think Bella would go and buy my birthday cake? Use your head."
I motioned for Emily to come to us. "Em, do you know where Bella is?"
"No, I haven't seen her after she left the kitchen. Bella was working all afternoon on the cake. You're going to love it. I'm going to wheel it out in a few minutes. Try the appetizers; they are great." Emily smiled before making her way toward the other guests. I called Bella, but it went to voicemail.
I went to the empty hallway and tried to calm my shaky hands. Then, I called Ardy from security. "Ardy, did Bella leave the premises?"
"Yes, Miss. Swan and Polo left almost an hour ago."
"Thanks, Ardy."
I let out a deep sigh of relief. Oh, thank god. Polo was with Bella. She'll be safe. Why did she lie before leaving? Unless she was doing something, nobody was supposed to know. I paced briefly until I heard soft whimpers from one of the guest bedrooms. Ava? Rose and Emmett didn't tell me Ava was here. My footsteps paused in Jack's guest bedroom doorway when I saw the nanny, Ula, rocking the baby to sleep.
Her eyes went wide, gazing at me. "H—Hi, Edward."
"Ula," I nodded. Bella once mentioned that she was scared of me. Be nice, Edward. "Once Ava falls asleep, you should join us outside."
"Sure, thank you."
As I turned to leave, I noticed something peculiar next to her. It was a sheet of paper with multiple letters scribbled on them. Some were scratched out, and a few were underlined. It didn't look like a typical letter or just words.
"What's that?" I whispered.
"It's nothing," Her voice shook. Liar. "I'm preparing for a trivia night."
I gave her a death glare. "Give me that."
Ula's shoulders slumped before she held the paper toward me. "Bella told me not to tell anyone. I'm sorry."
My expression changed from fury to surprise. "What? Bella?"
"Yeah, Bella got a letter some time ago, and she was asking me if I have solved anagrams before. I was just helping her out. She seemed in a hurry when she left."
I stared at the envelope, and my heart paused briefly. Holy fucking shit. Bella received a letter from Caleb Blik at her old apartment. Inside were two details: a contact number and the name Eliva Hives. Caleb Blik and Elia Hives were the two other visitors Kate met the day she was murdered. Abel Vales was an anagram. Bella believed Caleb Blik and Elia Hives were also anagrams.
"Did you solve them?" I demanded urgently.
"Yes, at the bottom."
C-A-L-E-B-B-L-I-K = I-L-L-B-E-B-A-C-K
E-L-I-A-H-I-V-E-S = H-E-I-S-A-L-I-V-E
Jesus fucking Christ.
"What about this number?"
Ula gulped. "Bella called the number but never spoke to the other person. And then suddenly left. We decoded the first name together, but she left before the second one. I texted it to her later. Is everything okay?"
"Yeah, everything is great. Don't tell anyone about this," I muttered dismissively before rushing out of the room.
I called Polo, but his call went straight to voicemail. My chest tightened. Bella wasn't here. I needed her. I took a deep breath, taking a moment to gather my thoughts. I dialed the number from the piece of paper and heard a pre-recorded message from Lauren. My face went pale hearing every detail Lauren said in her nasal voice.
I checked the time on my watch. It was fifteen past six. Bella was already there. With Polo. She went there to keep me safe. Of course, she did. Why wouldn't she risk her safety to protect me just to fall into the trap of Lauren and whoever was helping her? It wasn't Riley. Who was it?
An incoming call with Demetri's name snapped me out of my musings. I answered it within an instant. "Demetri, please tell me you're calling to tell me about Bella and Polo."
"Yes, Mr. Cullen. Per the given location on the phone call, Bella and Polo went there. Uh, it was James who arrived."
"What?" I couldn't believe my ears. I stared at the letters again. He is alive. James. "Fuck! Fuck! I'm leaving right away."
"Mr. Cullen, we have James with us. Stefan and Troy are taking him to Location 4. Polo was there to save Bella before her ex-husband did anything. They are on their way back home."
With the relief of hearing that Bella was returning home, my solace was replaced with fury. James. I did nothing to do that man because he didn't come near us. But now… he had gone too far. I had multiple possibilities of what I could do to him but nothing tonight.
"Don't do anything to James until I see him tomorrow. Not tonight. I need to be home. Bella will be shaken up."
"Yes, Sir." He disconnected the call.
Bella wouldn't be looking forward to hosting this party but knowing her, she would put on a brave face. I knew she wanted tonight to be perfect. Fuck, how did I find someone so generous and giving? As the excitement of this event was wearing off, I just needed her at my side. This evening felt incomplete without her presence.
I joined everyone in the Great room, where a table was now decorated with an over-the-top two-tier cake. It looked spectacular. Jack and Eric came running toward me with eager smiles.
"Uncle Ehwad, when you cut the cake?"
"After Aunt Bella is here. We'll wait for her, alright?" I ruffled their heads with a grin. They dashed back to resume their play with Skylar.
"Where is Bella?" Mom asked with concern. "Call her again,"
I called Bella, but it went to voicemail again. "Bella is one her way, Ma. Don't worry; she'll be here."
I chatted with my parents until Dad received a phone call. Then, he excused himself from the room. Charlie and Renée seemed excited to be a part of the celebration. Jacob and Leah were busy conversing with my friends. It was comforting to see our families together, enjoying each other's company.
My phone buzzed with an incoming call from Demetri when Dad strode in my direction with an urgent gaze. His face looked ashen, almost ghost-like. I had never seen that look on him before. I felt a weird pressure in my chest. Bella wasn't here. Demetri was calling. And Dad was terrified. I didn't want to join the dots. I refused to join the dots. She's fine. She's fine. I shouldn't jump to the worst conclusions.
Then, my phone rang with an unknown number. I stared at Dad's face after staring at the incoming call. My heartbeats had somehow slowed, and I was barely registering my surroundings. Dad blinked, and I noticed tears building in his blue eyes. It felt like a moment I would remember for the rest of my life. Everything had slowed to a standstill.
"It's my Bella, isn't it?" I murmured helplessly while pressing the phone to my ear.
"I am calling from the Emergency Administrative Services at the Multicare Medical Centre. Am I speaking to Mr. Edward Cullen?" The woman asked, but I had lost my voice. "Hello? Mr. Cullen, you've been listed as an emergency contact for Miss. Isabella Swan. I am saddened to inform you that Isabella has been in a car accident with a fellow passenger and is receiving…." The phone slipped out of my hand, despite being mentally prepared to hear the words.
My legs shook until they gave out, and I fell to my knees. I heard a gasp and saw my parents' faces kneeling in front of me. The room went quiet, and it was suddenly suffocating. My chest heaved as I tried to breathe. I stared at the circle of people staring at me, asking me something, but no words escaped my lips. I searched for Bella, hoping to see her face that could calm me.
Dad scooted closer and looked me in the eye. I knew things were bad when he had tears in his eyes. "Edward, Bella needs you right now. Right?" He touched my face. "She needs us. We have to be strong."
"I—I can't, Dad," I tried to calm my shaky hands. Finally, I balled them into fists.
"We have to go," He took my hand in both of his. "Deep breaths." I took a deep breath, followed by the next one. "Good, you're doing great."
"Oh my god!" Alice cried somewhere in the back. I realized my phone was missing. She answered my ringing phone. I could hear her informing everyone about the accident between her sobs.
"Edward," Dad made me focus on him again. "Let's go. Bella needs you."
Then I heard multiple people crying behind me, including Renée. My mind wasn't ready, but I couldn't sit here all day. Bella was alone in the hospital. I didn't even know about Polo's condition. It wasn't just the pain but also the guilt that paralyzed me. They were hurt because of me.
The next few minutes were an absolute blur as I sat in the car, and somebody drove me to the hospital. I knew Dad was at my side, talking to someone on the phone. My vision was transfixed on nothing, but the words didn't escape me. He was getting the synopsis of the accident. A transport van had collided with the car, causing it to crash into a tree. The vehicle was already suffering from a brake failure and was brought to a standstill by Polo when the van crashed. Bella had suffered heavy blood loss, and her heart rate was unstable. I had no clue how Polo was doing.
The car stopped, and I watched Dad rush ahead of us. Then, someone on my right tugged my hand. I turned to see it was Jasper. "Ed, let's go."
I blinked a few times before registering his words. He held my hand as we made our way… somewhere. I couldn't comprehend my surroundings.
"Where's Bella?" I murmured, searching around to see if anybody could assist us.
Jasper nodded. "Carlisle is speaking to the consulting doctor, and he'll let us know any minute. Bella is in the ER. Why don't you take a seat?"
"I—" My words paused as I saw Bella's family walking down the hallway toward us. Renée was a mess as Leah tried to console her while Charlie and Jacob barely held it together. My heart shattered, staring at their pain. They didn't deserve this.
"Edward, how is Bella?" Jacob demanded as his voice shook with fear.
I took a deep breath. Get yourself together, Edward. "Dad will let us know soon."
"How hurt is she? Are the injuries too severe?"
"I don't know yet," I gave an honest reply.
Everyone stood around in stunned silence, the impatience was growing amongst everyone as we waited. Finally, my eyes fell on the faraway corridor when my father approached us. I first noticed that he wasn't wearing his watch or wedding band. Ever since childhood, I knew my father would operate in the ER if he removed his belongings. My mind jumped to the worst conclusions again.
Dad stared at me briefly before looking at Bella's family. His steps were slow and deliberate as if he was contemplating a decision.
"Carlisle!" Renée cried as they gathered near me. "How is Bella? She's going to be fine, isn't she?"
"Bella has had some serious injuries. She has a broken leg, four broken ribs, sprained wrist, multiple bruises, and some minor cracks in her skull. In addition, she suffered from a hemorrhagic shock."
Charlie cleared his throat, and I saw him barely holding himself together. "A—A shock? W—What are you talking about?"
"A hemorrhagic shock usually occurs when the body shuts down from large amounts of blood loss. Bella has suffered internal bleeding as well. We're going ahead with the treatment before the diagnosis. We've started her first blood transfusion."
I was burning from the pain building inside me. My Bella was fighting for her life. I did this to her. She was dying because of me. The terror, agony, and guilt rolled into me, and I felt tears streaming down my face. Jasper put an arm around me, holding me still.
I looked at my father from the film of tears. "Dad, save her. Please." I pleaded with a desperation I had never felt before. "Please."
Dad had an impassive look on his face. I was used to that expression on him. My heart stuttered in my chest. There was more. I could see it on his face. Something bad.
"What is it?" My voice was nothing more than a whisper. What was worse than a broken leg, skull cracks, and a hemorrhagic shock?
"What—What happened?" Charlie asked desperately as he supported Renée with his free arm.
"One of the ribs punctured her left lung—the collapsed lung is small, so we'll be keeping her in the ER for 5-6 hours in case it gets any worse. If it does, we'll have to use a tube to remove the excess air trapped inside."
"Carlisle, please save my baby. We can't lose her." Renée wailed and hid her face against Charlie. "She doesn't deserve so much pain."
"We're trying our best, Renée. I'll keep you posted," Dad nodded. I wanted to scream at him for his diplomatic answer, but I knew my father was doing his best.
Bella's family stepped away to settle down while Dad remained rooted in his spot before me. My chest felt heavy from the gut-wrenching pain. "How is Polo?" I croaked out.
"Polo has suffered a few injuries but is doing better than Bella. He has also suffered from heavy blood loss. His family is here. Whenever you are feeling composed, go meet them. You should meet them."
"Yes, Sir. Wasn't Polo the one driving? Why does he have fewer injuries?"
Dad sighed heavily. "It seemed like they were about the step out of the car. The investigation revealed that Bella's door was almost unlocked. Bella had unbuckled her seatbelt, but Polo hadn't. When the car hit, Bella was thrown out—"
I cut him off. "I get it, thanks. I can't hear it."
He squeezed my shoulder before leaving us in the corridor. Jasper led me to the nearest bench, and we settled down. A few minutes passed as I tried to gather my thoughts. This wasn't an accident, was it? It was a deliberate attempt to kill my Bella. And Polo, somehow. Riley was after this. He let James compromise his anonymity just to conduct the car crash. When Polo successfully controlled the brake failure, a van crashed into them, ensuring the damage was done.
I rose to my feet, and Jasper looked startled. "Edward, what are you doing?"
"I need to make a call," I patted my empty pockets. "Where's my phone?"
Jasper passed the phone from his jacket. "Are you in the right state to make any—"
"Jazz, I'm fine. I need to get to the bottom of this," I murmured. The investigation will keep me distracted. I called Agent Heidi Jones from the FBI, who answered on the first ring.
"Edward?"
"Agent Jones, I need your help. Bella has been in a car crash," I tried to keep my voice composed. "We think Riley is involved. I'm at Dad's hospital. Can you come over?"
"Edward, I'm so sorry to hear that. We're just finishing some work Downtown. Agent Snyder and I will be there in twenty. Text me your location."
I paced in the hallway, waiting for the federal agents to arrive. I knew the rest of my family was yet to arrive to give us space. A crowd would lead to chaos. I also knew they wouldn't sit at home for a long time. They'll show up soon. I needed to give Heidi the details before people started asking questions. I wondered what jewelry Bella was wearing tonight. Her daffodil pendant had a tracker.
I gazed at Bella's family; Jacob was the most composed of them. I walked in his direction, and Jacob rose to his feet. "Jacob, I need your help with something."
"What is it?"
"Can you recover Bella's items from the hospital? Her clothes, phone, and the rest? I'll make a special request at the hospital, and since you are her brother, it won't take long. We need it for investigation."
Charlie snapped his head in my direction. "What investigation?"
I hesitated before I spoke. "There might be a possibility that the accident was deliberate. Someone may have caused it."
"Riley?" Jacob looked confused. "Isn't he in jail?"
Leah gasped. "He escaped a few weeks ago. It was in the news. Is he trying to kill Bella?"
"Someone is trying to kill Bella?" Renée's cries resumed.
I gave Leah a pointed look, and she looked apologetic. She tried to console Renée. I ran a hand through my hair. "Jacob, do you have your ID on you?"
"Yes."
"Please retrieve it. Jasper will take you." I nodded at Jasper, and they went toward the elevators.
I felt Charlie's eyes on me, but I was staring at the empty wall before me. I knew he would be fuming, knowing I was why his daughter fought for her life. I was the reason another person was also in pain in the hospital.
The FBI Agents were first arriving, dressed in navy jackets with the letters FBI printed on their back. They drew everyone's attention while walking toward me. I stepped away from Bella's parents before we could begin the discussion.
"Edward, how is Bella's condition?" There was genuine concern on her face.
I swallowed hard. "Bella will get better." I was trying to console myself.
"Can you tell me everything that happened today?"
I began detailing the incidents from the moment I stepped inside my house until I made a phone call to her. Every discovery I made and how the anagrams came into play. She shared a thoughtful look with Agent Snyder. Before she could comment, Jacob and Jasper arrived with a ziplock bag of Bella's belongings. Jacob passed it to me.
My hands shook as I unlocked it. I felt tears gather in my eyes, gazing at the dress and shoes. I opened the smaller ziplock bags inside that contained jewelry. Thankfully, Bella was wearing the pendant and charm bracelet. I turned over the daffodil pendant and removed the tracker from the inside.
"This has Bella's tracking information from the last week. We erase the data periodically."
Agent Jones sighed. "Edward, where is James?"
"I don't know. That man escaped. Polo was busy saving Bella," I lied. The FBI wasn't getting their hands on James until some damage was done.
"Your security let James escape? You want me to believe that?" She didn't look convinced.
"Heidi, I'm not in the mood to lie or scheme when Bella is dying," My voice cracked. "I need your help."
"Right. I will ask a few Agents to canvas Bella's old apartment and see for suspicious sightings at the park. We'll retrieve the freeway footage for more information about the van driver. Let us check who dropped off that envelope at Bella's apartment. Just when I think we've made peace with the case, something new comes up."
"Did you retrieve the paper with James' bank details?" Agent Snyder asked.
I shook my head. "I don't know where it is."
After a few routine questions, the FBI Agents left. I immediately sat on the bench and grabbed Bella's phone from the bag. If I had opened the phone to check for details, the FBI Agents would've taken it as evidence. So instead, I switched on her device, and Jasper frowned at me.
"What are you doing?"
"Bella wouldn't meet someone suspicious without doing something. But, as smart as Bella is, her rationality goes out of the window when somebody threatens my life for no reason," I muttered.
Her phone came to life, and I entered the passcode. I checked through her last-used applications. Voice Recorder. Huh. She never actively used that application.
"Bella recorded something," Jasper looked surprised. It was a twenty-minute voice note.
For the first five minutes, I heard nothing but the rustling of her feet. Then there was a thudding of footsteps.
"Bella darling, look at you. So beautiful. Edward Cullen is a lucky man. No, why are you so scared of me? We used to be married." James' voice made me shudder. It was the first time I heard that man speak. I couldn't imagine the terror on Bella's face after seeing him.
"Stay away from me," Bella sounded angry. She was brave. She was a little too courageous to risk her fucking life.
Bella's family huddled close after hearing Bella's voice on the recorder. We listened to the entire conversation with heavy hearts. My eyes watered at one point when I realized James held a knife to her neck. But Polo came to the rescue, saving Bella at the right moment. Then I heard Stefan and Troy conversing with Polo about contacting Demetri. A few seconds later, the recording stopped.
"Are you sending this to the FBI Agents as evidence?" Charlie inquired. Fuck, he was a cop.
I cleared my throat. "Yes, some portion of it."
"So that bastard is alive?" Charlie looked pissed. "He pretended to die? What kind of a sick lunatic does that? To harm my daughter?" His voice raised with every word.
"Charlie, he'll get what's coming for him."
"Where is he right now?"
I put Bella's pendant in my pocket. "James is with us, but the FBI Agents think he escaped."
"You lied to federal agents?" Charlie asked quietly. I didn't respond. "Make him wish he was dead." That was all he replied.
"Yes, Sir."
I sat silently with my head in my hands as I sensed déjà vu. I remembered sitting on a similar bench in a New York hospital while my ex-girlfriend Julie was fighting for her life. The image of seeing her almost unrecognizable face in the emergency room was forever burned in my memory. She had suffered severe injuries, some were similar to Bella's condition. But Julie never made it alive.
How could I sit here writhing in pain, knowing my Bella was fighting with every passing second? Jasper answered his ringing phone, and I heard him dictate Bella's injuries to someone. The words brought a painful reminder and guilt inside me.
My heart was running in my chest as I felt my vision blur. My hands began shaking again, and the corridor was suffocating. I tried hard to breathe, taking one breath at a time. It had been many months since I last had a panic attack. Bella was with me when it happened; she put me at ease. I gazed around the space and tried to look for an escape.
I stood up and made my way toward the emergency staircase. Fresh air. I could barely focus on the stairs as my steps froze at the top of the stairway. I backed against the wall and sat on the top stair. I held Bella's pendant in a death grip as I felt tears spilling from my eyes. There was an aching in my chest I couldn't stop.
I unlocked my phone and surfed through my voicemails. I opened the last voicemail Bella had sent me last week when I was in New York for a conference. I pressed the phone to my ear and shut my eyes.
"Hi, Edward. I just saw your missed call. I'm sorry, I was swamped with work all day. I know you must be already asleep; it's almost midnight here. I miss you so much. Skylar misses you too. Two more days! My parents are coming over, so don't be surprised when Renée gifts you another extravagant creation. You asked for it!" She laughed, and I smiled through my tears. Skylar barked, drawing her attention. "It's not daddy, sweetie. I'm leaving a voicemail," Bella chuckled. "I should go. Skylar wants to go out. Come home, sweetheart. I love you."
I replayed the voicemail as her soothing voice and laughter calmed my nerves. This was not how I imagined my birthday would go down. I wasn't supposed to sit in an empty stairway clutching pieces of her while she fought to live. Instead, we were supposed to spend time with our family in our home.
The phone dropped on my lap when I felt a hand on my arm. Aunt Carmen sat on the step and put her arm around me. I tilted my head on her shoulder, exhausted. We sat in silence for a long time.
"I'm going to share something," Aunt Carmen said quietly. "See if you can remember it. You were ten years old when my mother passed away. Do you recall us going to St. Louis to attend Mamie's funeral?" I nodded. "Vanessa was just two at the time. It was sudden and unexpected, but I didn't have time to grieve or express myself. I had to look after you and Vanessa. Then, this one evening, I thought nobody was home. Eleazar was at work, Ness was napping, and you were supposed to be at Jasper's place."
"I was walking in the backyard when I saw the flowers you had planted with Mamie a few months before. I sat on the grass and began sobbing. I missed her. The shock of her passing wore off, and I realized she wasn't returning. Then, you came to the backyard out of nowhere, looking for me. I stopped crying, but you knew what was going on. You have always been a smart boy."
Aunt Carmen stretched her hand over her head. "You were this tall and kept staring at my face. I had no idea what was going on in your head. You stepped closer to wipe away my tears. Then you said—"
"Nonna says it's okay to have a good cry. It makes us less sad," I whispered, completing the sentence.
"Yes, and gave me the tightest hug so I could cry. Do you know what happened after that? I felt lighter. To get it off my chest. Our hearts are fragile, Edward. We can't put too much pressure on them at once."
I lifted my head off her shoulder to stare at her through a film of tears. "Bella's dying because of me."
"I don't think that's how anybody sees this. You always protect the ones you love. And Bella is your whole world. I'm sure she doesn't want you to blame yourself," She wiped away my tears. "Your Nonna says that it's okay to have a good cry. It makes us less sad."
Aunt Carmen put her arms around me for a hug. I felt a weird pull in my chest as a sob escaped me. And I let myself cry for the first time since hearing about the accident. I had endangered not just Bella's life; Polo was equally injured. I hadn't even met his family yet. His mother and sister must be terrified.
I didn't know how long I took comfort in crying, but eventually, my tears slowed. It did make me feel lighter as some of the pressure dissipated. When I pulled back, I noticed Aunt Carmen had tears in her eyes. She stroked my hair with a sigh.
"Edward, Bella is going to be okay. She's brave. Of course, she's going to pull through. But, there is going to be a long road to recovery. It's not going to be easy. But that's when she'll need you the most. You must be strong for the two because she will be everywhere. It's going to be overwhelming."
I nodded. I knew what Aunt Carmen meant. Bella will be in shock after she wakes up. The pain is going to be unbearable. But if Bella sees me break down every time she winces, I know she'll suffer through everything by herself.
"Everyone's here," She whispered. "Esme, your siblings, and your best friends."
I didn't feel like talking to anybody. "I don't want to go back there."
"I understand. It's okay. How about you go meet Polo's family? They look up to you, don't they? Tell them everything's going to be fine."
My grip tightened on the pendant in my fist. "Yes, I'll go see Polo's family."
"Take the stairs. Wash your face," Aunt Carmen wiped away my tears. "Maybe brush your hair a little, although that never worked since you were a child."
"Mamma, stop," I rolled my eyes.
"Fine. Go now." She kissed my cheek before rising to her feet. I watched her open the door and return to the hallway.
Deep breaths.
After composing myself, I texted my father to send me Polo's hospital details. He replied within an instant. I took the stairs to reach his floor and found the nearest bathroom. Once I was presentable, I began tracking down the Waiting Room.
Four years ago, I was living in New York and working as the Chief Creative Officer at the New York office when Grandpa Anthony suggested I begin recruiting my security detail. Make a team that would help and protect me. His then-assistant helped me with the recruitment process. I opted to interview people convicted of crimes but wanted a fresh start in life.
Demetri was the first person I hired. He was the man who overlooked my every operation. We began interviewing people and candidates who could help me build a strong network. Sam was the second person I hired. Along came his wonderful wife, Emily as my housekeeper. As the team began growing, I also realized people were taking notice of the security around me. I needed someone who could operate under the radar. The trouble with Riley had just begun brewing, and we needed someone who could specifically work to keep an eye on him.
It was around that time Demetri said that he knew someone. Polo Ramirez. His father was an Intelligence Officer in the CIA and had died on duty. He lived in Queens with his mother and two young sisters. Despite completing military training, he didn't enroll as he was undergoing psychological treatment. He was diagnosed with clinical depression since his father's death and once attempted suicide. Polo was looking for work to support his family.
When I told Polo about the complexity of working undercover as Riley's bodyguard, he instantly agreed. Polo was against Riley's healthcare company's policies and said his father would've wanted him to take the work. Due to the risk that came along with the job, I helped his family relocate to Mexico. I didn't want another family tangled in this mess. I remained in constant connection with his mother and sisters. My therapist, Victoria, guided Polo through dealing with his father's grief.
"Edward!" I located the trio of women sitting in the far corner of the almost vacant room.
Amelia, his youngest sister, slammed herself into my arms. I rubbed her back with one hand while Polo's other sister, Catalina, held my other hand in a death grip.
"Hey, everything is going to be fine," I said soothingly. "We have to be strong, don't we?"
"Polo can't leave us," His mother, Juana, sobbed.
"Por favor, don't say that," I murmured. "Of course not. Polo will wake up soon, and we'll help him through everything."
Amelia pulled back with a firm nod. "He'll be fine."
"That's right," I wiped away her tears. "Polo is going to be more concerned that the two of you are missing your college."
Catalina cracked a smile as she hugged her mother. "That sounds like Polo."
"Edward, we're going to the church downstairs," Jauana dabbed her eyes with a napkin. "Do you want to come with us?"
"Of course."
Amelia had a tight grip on my hand as we approached the elevators. "How is Isabella?"
My heart skipped a beat at the mention of her name. "She'll be okay, just like Polo."
"Si, that's right."
They were strong women who were fragile at the moment. I kept them company, trying to comfort them in any way I could. Amelia and Catalina shared their fears out loud while I tried to resolve them. It felt good to help them work through the feelings. Tragedy was always unexpected and cruel.
An hour later, I forced Polo's family to go to the cafeteria to grab a bite to eat. I braced myself as the elevator rode to the tenth floor. As soon as I gathered near my family and friends, I was surrounded by tears and hugs. So many hugs. Everyone was concerned yet wanted to offer me hope. But there was nothing to do but wait.
Mom touched my cheek with a sigh. "You should eat. It's getting late. Your father will call with an update soon."
Food seemed like an unappetizing concept. "That's alright. I'm not hungry."
"Come on," Peter grabbed my arm. "Let's go."
I glanced around, but Bella's family was nowhere to be seen. Tanya sighed. "Carmen took them to the cafeteria."
"I don't want to go."
"Then keep us company," Tanya looped her arm through mine. "But, you're coming. Jazz, let's go."
Peter, Tanya, and Jasper dragged me toward the elevators while I reluctantly stood at their side. Tanya got me a slice of pizza and coke along with their food. I sighed uneasily when I saw multiple people turning their heads to gaze at us. Tanya pushed my head toward the plate.
"Ignore them. Eat."
Peter sipped his juice. "Did you meet Polo's family? How are they doing?"
"Fine, I guess," I shrugged. "They must be somewhere here."
My friends didn't talk at the table for the rest of our duration. We just sat in silence, barely eating. But their company was comforting. There were people around who could understand what I was feeling and give me space. They must have questions about the accident, but nobody uttered a word. I took a few bites of the pizza slice to suffice their demand. At least I ate something.
I called Seth to inquire about Skylar. He said she was confused and looking for Bella and me but got distracted playing outside. My heart broke at the thought of my Skylar being sad. It must be surprising for her that some family members were home, but Bella and I weren't there.
Around midnight, I politely asked everyone to leave. Nobody needed to ruin their sleep and just sit around waiting. Mom and Alice were reluctant to go, but Jasper somehow led them to the elevator.
"Renée, I'll call you when we get an update," I promised her. "No matter what time it is. Please go home. You can come over first thing in the morning."
"I'll stay at Jacob and Leah's tonight. It's closer to the hospital." She nodded.
I gave her a quick hug. "Of course. Get some rest."
"Charlie wants to stay back," She whispered before pulling back. "He hasn't eaten all day."
"I'll take care of it." I squeezed her hand.
I had been in many hospital corridors and waiting rooms over the years. Time becomes an abstract concept in these confined walls. Days and nights submerge into a single time frame from entering until you leave. Bella was still in the ER under observation for her small collapsed lung. If Bella's injury doesn't recover on its own, she might need to go for surgery.
Waiting was the worst part. The outside world held no interest, and the patience wore off.
Charlie and I were seated next to each other on the bench, lost in our thoughts. I knew it would irritate Charlie if I forced him to grab a bite to eat. Instead, he suddenly cleared his throat. "Bella is going to be fine. My daughter is strong."
"I know," I whispered.
"You don't have to feel guilty for this, Edward. It wasn't your fault. But, when she wakes up, it will take time for the recovery."
"I'm ready. Whatever it takes." I checked the time on my watch. It was past midnight. "Some birthday."
"Bella was planning for weeks. Making the guest list... deciding the catering menu. I used to hear her asking Renée's opinions. It would've been a great party."
"I know. Everyone was there. I was glad to see you and Renée there. Renée had made me promise something."
"What is that?"
"When Bella and I visited Forks two months ago, you dragged her to get groceries. I was alone with Renée, discussing future plans. I told Renée I would let your family know before asking Bella to marry me. And Renée joked that she would only give me her blessings if she approved of the ring."
Charlie chuckled. "Oh, that woman has no filter."
I cracked a smile. "When I saw you tonight, my first thought was that I had to show the ring," I stared at my hands. "In less than two months, Bella and I celebrate the anniversary of the night we met. I was planning to propose to her that night. On our first date, I took her to a fair that would be back in town this summer. I had booked the whole place for our anniversary date. Bella is crazy about Ferris wheels, so I was going to propose to her on the ride. She would've got a kick out of it," My smile faltered as my eyes welled with tears. "And now she has a fractured leg, skull cracks, and broken ribs. She won't be able to breathe without it hurting."
Bella's father remained quiet for a few minutes. "Edward, these months will be difficult but will pass you. A year from now, they will be just a small reminder. The important part is staying at each other's side and healing together. Not to be nosy, but you should wait a few months for the proposal. I would like to walk my daughter down the aisle."
I smiled through the tears. "Noted."
Our conversation paused when I saw Dad walking in our direction with a fellow resident doctor. Charlie and I rose to our feet at once. I focused on my father's face, which had a neutral look. As he got closer, I saw a spark of relief in his eyes. I stared at his strapped watch and wedding ring and knew everything would somehow—and miraculously be okay.
BELLA
My eyes fluttered open to a dim far-off light. I gazed toward the window on my right to see a rosy hue across the sky. Was it dusk or dawn? As the confusion passed, I began feeling uncomfortable. I felt restrained on the large bed. My eyes drifted to my right elbow, and I saw an IV attached to the inside of my right elbow while my other hand was in a cast. Something was taped under my nose while a heart rate monitor was beeping near me. Was I dead? Or alive? What the hell was going on? I recalled the last thing I could remember and froze in shock.
The park. James. Brakes. Polo. Van. Car crash. I was in a car crash. Was Polo okay? I took a deep breath but let out a low moan. It hurt to breathe. My chest hurt. I stared at my body covered with the white sheet. My left leg felt lumpy and heavy. There was no way I could move.
I knew I was at the hospital, but the room felt foreign. Scary. Why was nobody here? Why was I alone? I should call Edward. My parents! Oh, they will be devastated. The hospital must have contacted someone. Everyone was at Edward's birthday party. Wait, what day was it? I missed the entire evening. What was going on?
The beeping suddenly became louder until it was the only sound heard around. I was hyperventilating. A sob escaped my chest, but the following pain was quite unbearable. I couldn't even cry in peace. I felt weak and tired. My vision blurred just as an angelic face came into my voice.
"Bella?" Edward! His voice brought a fresh round of tears. Edward! My Edward was here! I could hear his voice, but the tears made it impossible to see anything. I tried to lift my hands but groaned in pain. I wanted to see him… hold him. Tell him everything that happened.
I opened my mouth, but no words escaped my lips.
"Bella, hush, calm down. You're fine, love. You're safe. Calm down," His soothing voice did nothing to lower my anxiety. I had to warn him about everything that had happened. I had to tell him to check my phone. "Bella, please calm down. Bella, please," It sounded like he was crying, which increased my restlessness. "… is the fucking nurse." I heard him mutter under his breath as his fingers touched my wet cheek.
"Oh, thank god! Please, help her! I don't know what happened. I woke up when the heart monitor went crazy. Is she okay?" The desperation in his voice made my heart ache.
I heard someone reply, but I was already slipping into unconsciousness. My eyes shut on their accord when a numbing sensation eased the pain.
…
The next time I opened my eyes, it was daylight. I re-examined my body, and unfortunately, the injuries remained. So, it wasn't just a nightmare. I was alive and heavily wounded. The pain was present, but the medication probably eased the rest of it. The last thoughts before my unconscious state resurfaced. The phone! Did it mean that Edward was with me if my thoughts were real? I remembered his voice trying to calm me. I needed to see him.
I gazed around at the people in the room, but Edward was nowhere to be seen. My father was seated on a nearby chair, reading the newspaper. Alice and Leah were chatting on a faraway couch. My eyes raced toward the doorway when Angela strolled inside, holding a bouquet of tulips. She casually gazed toward my figure and did a double-take in my direction.
"Oh my god! Bella, you're awake!" Angela came rushing toward me, and Charlie scrambled to his feet. Alice and Leah joined them to see me.
"Hey, guys," I croaked out uneasily. I took a deep breath and winced. My body was damaged at this point.
Dad kissed my hair. "It's so good to see you awake, Bells."
"How long was I unconscious?"
Alice adjusted my sheet. "For three days. You were in a medically induced coma."
"How are you feeling?" Leah asked gently.
I chuckled and immediately regretted that decision. "Could be better," My eyes shut for a second due to the weird ache in my chest. "How hurt am I?"
Alice didn't hold back. "Broken leg, sprained wrist, minor cuts and bruises, four broken ribs, a lot of blood loss, and you punctured your lung."
My heart stopped briefly, and they simultaneously gazed at the monitor. "Punctured lung? Oh my god," I tried to lift my free arm but couldn't. Stupid IV. It stung and felt uncomfortable.
Charlie eyed the monitor as he spoke. "The puncture was small, and it healed on its own. Nothing to worry about."
That was better than surgery. Anything was better than surgery. My body was covered in bandages and gauze; I had never been more uncomfortable.
"Where's Mom?"
"She went to our place," Leah whispered. "We're taking turns staying here."
I felt guilty for ruining everyone's schedules. "You don't have to do that. Dad, go back to Forks. You are missing work."
"We are not going anywhere until you are discharged from this hospital," Charlie pressed something to my right.
A few seconds later, an elderly nurse walked in with a warm smile. She introduced herself as Gillian before taking my blood pressure. Then, she left to retrieve water, and I focused on Alice. "What happened to Polo? Is he alright?"
"Polo is also hurt, but he woke up last night. So he's doing better now." She reassured me.
I sighed with relief. "Thank god."
The nurse returned with a paper cup brimming with water. I took slow sips and felt nourished as the cold liquid traveled down my throat. "Miss. Swan, your blood pressure is still high. We need you to take some much-needed rest. I will send in a fellow RN who will give you more pain meds."
My heart rate accelerated hearing her words. "No, please. I'm doing fine. I need to see someone," I shifted and moaned from the spasm of pain.
"Bella, don't move!" Angela admonished me.
"Where's Edward? Why isn't he here? I need to see Edward."
A sob escaped my chest from the pain, and I hissed in agony. Shit, this was unbearable. I watched the nurse leave the room in a rush, and my anxiety began building. She went to send the other nurse. They were putting me back to sleep. Why wasn't he here? My heart rate picked up pace as I heard the annoying monitor beeping like crazy. I shut my eyes as the tears didn't stop oozing from my eyes.
"Bella, I texted Edward. He's on his way," I heard Alice say. "Calm down, Bella."
"Everything hurts," I gasped out. I had the urge to curl my arm around my stomach but couldn't. I didn't know how long I remained writhing in pain, but I heard a new pair of footsteps entering the room. The nurse.
"Bella? It's me. Look at me," Edward said, and my eyes fluttered open. I cried when his green eyes bore into mine. He was here. I watched a tear trickle down his cheek. He eyed the monitor for a brief second.
"Where were you?" I blubbered through my tears.
"I was right here in the building," He carefully sat on the edge of the bed. I felt his hand tangle with mine. His touch brought an instant wave of calm. His lips pressed against my forehead. "Shh, calm down. Focus on me."
"Edward, it hurts so much," I complained through the pain.
He wiped away my tears. "I know, baby. The nurse is going to give you some pain meds for that. It will put you right to sleep."
"I don't want to sleep."
"I'm not going anywhere, Bella," Edward smiled sadly. "When you wake up, I'll be right here. I promise. There is so much to talk about," He stroked my cheek. "We can't talk unless you're fine, my love. Your body needs a lot of rest. So the next time you open your eyes, I will be right here."
I nodded. "I love you."
"I love you more, Bella." He brushed his lips against mine.
Edward pried his hands away from mine when the nurse entered the room and stepped aside. A few seconds later, the drowsiness instantly kicked inside me. My eyelids began drooping. Edward interlaced our hands again as I fell into a peaceful slumber.
The next time I gained consciousness, the pain was manageable. I felt oddly at peace. I opened my eyes and gazed toward the window on instinct. It was pitch black outside. I had different needs this time. I was parched and hungry. Very hungry. I still couldn't lift my arm. I wondered how long I had to remain in this state. I struggled to lift my head, but a strong pair of arms pinned me to the bed.
"Bella, stay still," Edward said sternly. His face shone silver in the moonlight. I stared at his cautious yet tired eyes. He hadn't slept in days. There was a three-day stubble on his face with bags under his eyes. Even so, he looked handsome.
"Hi," I whispered with a smile. Despite everything, the pain felt manageable in his presence.
His eyes welled with tears. "Hey."
"Don't cry. I'm fine," My voice cracked. "I'm sorry I ruined your birthday. I wanted it to be perfect."
"It was until it wasn't," His lips turned down. "Don't apologize for that, love. We'll have more birthdays to celebrate. You can do something next year."
"Maybe a barbecue party in the backyard," I whispered. "You love barbecue parties."
"Sounds great." He chuckled. "Before you ask, Polo is also recovering well. He's resting, just like you."
"Did you meet him?"
"Mm, yes. Polo's family is with him."
I sighed happily. Polo wasn't alone. "Where is our family?"
"I sent everybody home. They are going to bombard this room tomorrow. You've been warned. Everyone's leaving tomorrow except your parents."
"Good, they must have commitments." I stared at his clothes with a frown. They were different than the ones in the morning. "Did you leave after I slept?"
"I haven't left this building in three days," Edward stroked my cheek. "I shower and changed in Dad's office."
My lips pressed into a thin line. "You should go home when I'm asleep. What about Skylar? Edward, she hasn't seen us in three days."
Edward dragged the armchair to sit closer to the bed. He looked guilty. "I know, love. But I couldn't leave the hospital. Seth said that she is being difficult."
"Of course she is. Poor baby. Edward, this is not good for her. You need to go home first thing in the morning. Please."
"I will," He promised me. "Now that you are awake."
"You need some rest too."
Edward touched his forehead against my IV-covered hand. I found the strength to move my fingers and ran them through his hair. He took a deep breath. "Bella, I couldn't relax knowing you were in this condition."
"I'm going to get better," I said on instinct. "Don't worry so much."
He lifted his head, and my hand dropped on the bed. The anguish on his face made my stomach twist into uneasy knots. "Bella, I thought I lost you," A tear trickled down his cheek. "I can never forgive myself for this. I heard the audio recording on the phone, and I know how you landed here. Barely alive. This is my fault. It hurts to watch you in so much pain. I can't imagine how you feel. No amount of apology is going to be enough."
I let out a shaky breath and grimaced. "Edward, please don't blame yourself. I don't. If the roles were switched, I would be beside myself too. I can't let you feel guilty about this. But, please," My voice broke. "I don't want to cry. It hurts to cry."
Edward kissed my knuckles. "Okay, okay. Shh, I won't talk about it right now. It's a heavy topic. I'm just grateful that you and Polo are awake and recovering."
"Good," I sniffled. "Tell me, how terrible do I look?"
"Bella—"
I cut him off. "Be honest."
"It's going to take some time for the bruises to heal," He said softly. "You are covered in injuries. And you don't look terrible. You are beautiful. When you woke five minutes ago and smiled at me… all the exhaustion from the last three days disappeared. It was like the sun came out in the middle of the night. I was waiting for that smile for what seems like years."
My face turned red. "Now you're just being sweet. Tell me. On a scale of 0-10. How terrible do I look?"
"Hmm, 0-10?" Edward looked thoughtful for a moment. "A solid 6.5."
I smiled. "That's not so bad."
"Not bad at all," He agreed and pecked my lips.
"You, on the other hand," I said with an amused grin. "I would give a 5. It's 2 on a normal day. Which means you need sleep."
"2 on a normal day?" He huffed. "I finally see why you are with me. The trashy gossip articles were right. You are dating me for the money. Not my good looks."
"Oh, Edward. I thought you knew that. I will steal all your money and travel the world with my secret lover," I whispered playfully.
"Fine! But I get Skylar."
"No, she's mine!" I pouted.
He shook his head gravely. "Now, you're just being greedy. You can't get the money and Skylar."
"But what if Freddie likes dogs?"
"Who's Freddie?"
"My secret lover. He is an investment banker on Wall Street but also plays the guitar."
Edward glared at me. "I'm glad you are being creative despite a head injury. I don't like the name Freddie anymore." I laughed, but the stabbing pain in my chest returned with full force. I felt a tear escape the corner of my eye. Edward smiled apologetically and kissed my cheek. "I'm sorry, baby. No more laughing."
"Not for a few more days," I agreed. But then, I suddenly remembered Edward mentioning the audio recording. "Sweetheart, did you also hear Lauren's message?"
His eyes tightened. "Yes. Once, I bullied Ula into telling me your plan."
I felt bad for Jack and Ava's nanny. "I'm sorry. She was so sweet helping me."
"You could've called me Bella. We never keep things from each other."
"Lauren warned me that you might die." I reasoned.
Edward suddenly held a neutral expression. He sat straighter in his seat and held my hand. "Bella, I want you to listen to the next part very carefully and remember this for the rest of your life," He looked me in the eye. "You might not know this, but I am possibly the most powerful man in Seattle. I employ 10% of the population in this city and silently take part in the political decisions of Washington state. When somebody tells you that my life is in danger. They are lying. Always remember that. Nothing can ever happen to me. There is security around me at all times. Constantly. These people are hired after tough screening rounds. If they betray me, the consequences are catastrophic."
He continued. "Nobody can physically hurt me unless I am voluntarily risking my life. So if somebody threatens you with my life, you must protect yourself immediately. Because that threat is meant for you. Not me."
His words sunk deep into my skin, making me realize how reckless I was to put my and Polo's life in danger. Edward was sitting in front of me unscathed while I was barely alive.
"Please, don't ever put your life at risk for me," Edward begged with desperation in his eyes. "I can't physically or mentally handle you being in this situation again. I have died a thousand deaths since Thursday." His hands were shaking as he stared at my face. The anguish on his face told me Edward had suffered a lot more than he let on. He looked mentally drained. I feared that he had a panic attack. Oh god.
"I'm here," I whispered, dragging his shaky hand toward me. He clasped my hand in both of his before kissing my fingers. "And I will remember what you said. I promise. The next time somebody says you are in danger, I will run to save my life."
He chuckled. "Good. Every move I make is well thought-out. There are multiple backups for everything. So don't ever worry about me."
"You overthink sometimes," I whispered.
"I never overthink when it comes to you," Edward admitted. "I listen to my gut. I knew I was in love when I saw you that night in Angela's cafe. I even asked Victoria the next day if it was normal to fall in love with someone in an instant."
"And I went home to look at FBI's Most-Wanted List to reassure myself that I didn't have hot sex with a serial killer," I said, making him laugh out loud.
"Oh, Bella. I can't believe I survived three days without you."
My lips curled into a grin as Edward leaned over to connect our lips for a gentle kiss. I eagerly kissed him back with as much energy as I possibly had. I tried to lift my hand, and Edward pinned it at my side without breaking our kiss. I giggled against his lips even though it hurt. How did he know? He pecked my lips and sighed.
"I know you too well, Bella. And I also know that you must be hungry."
My stomach growled in response. "You are right about that."
"Dr. Verma is going to perform a routine check-up on you, and then we'll get dinner, alright?" He pressed one of the buttons to alert the doctor.
A polite knock was on the door before a tall doctor entered the room alongside a nurse. Edward stood back against the wall as the nurse switched on the light. I squinted under the glare before adjusting my vision. Dr. Verma offered me a warm smile before she started her routine. She shone a light in my eye before checking my ribs. I yelped when her hand brushed against my mid-ribs. Edward instantly met my gaze with an alert face. She made me perform a few breathing exercises before prescribing some painkillers.
"Bella, you'll require ample rest for the next few weeks. So relax and take it slow. But, I'm not going to lie; your injuries will take a while to heal," She warned gently. "We'll examine your situation and bring in the physician to teach you breathing and coughing exercises for your pneumothorax in a few days."
"How long do I have to stay here?" I asked in a small voice.
"About two weeks. Then again, it depends on your recovery rate." Two weeks? Oh no.
My heart rate accelerated, and Edward came to stand by my injured side. He stroked my cheek, and I relaxed from his touch. "If you take your medications on time and get proper rest, we'll leave here in no time. Right, Doctor?" I looked at him, but he stared at the doctor with a pointed look.
"Yes, of course. I'll swing by tomorrow. Take care, Bella."
I glanced at her and offered a small smile. "Thank you, Dr. Verma."
Dr. Verma informed Nurse Gillian something before leaving the room. The nurse brought a glass of water, which Edward took from her hold. He slightly raised the upper half of the bed to help me drink.
"Slow sips, love."
I drank the water to completion while the nurse arrived with a bowl of plain chicken broth. I made a face, but Edward patiently and forcefully made me eat it.
"Look, here comes the airplane," Edward joked as he fed me the last bite. The nurse tried to hide her smile and took the empty bowl and cutlery. She passed Edward my medications before leaving. Once I had consumed my pills and the lights were turned down, Edward lowered the bed for me to sleep. The medicines were strong because my eyelids were getting heavy.
"Edward, go home in the morning. Skylar. Please don't sleep on this couch. Instead, go to one of the Sleeping Rooms on this floor."
"Yes, I will," He tucked me under the sheet and pecked my lips. "Good night, baby. I love you."
"I love you too. Good night."
Edward was right to warn me when he said that everyone would visit me the following day. Edward went home to be with Skylar while I was swamped with family and friends visiting. Alice mentioned that the accident news was leaked in the press, but I didn't worry. I wasn't leaving the hospital room for a long time.
It was ridiculous that people took shifts staying with me when Edward wasn't around. But I needed help with everything. Edward couldn't ignore his work for many days and started conducting his meetings from my room. Since I was in one of the VIP hospital suites, he had ample space on the comfortable couches to complete his tasks. Edward often came during late afternoons when I was awake, as my morning and evening medications barely kept me conscious. I suggested he spend time with Skylar, who felt anxious in our constant absence from home. God, I missed her.
The two weeks at the hospital were difficult. I was barely functioning, and my respiratory system was weak. My sprained wrist was healing faster than I expected. It still felt uncomfortable to take help from everyone. Edward's assistants often visited my room to check on me and conduct quick meetings with him. Charlie reluctantly left for Forks since he couldn't stay away from work long, but Renée refused to leave. It allowed us to spend uninterrupted time together, swapping stories from the last few weeks.
People from work also took time from their schedules to visit me. My work friends and colleagues dropped by, including Jasmine and Jane. The Executives invited to the party also met me when Edward was at the hospital. I think they just came to be in his good books, but never mind.
I was happiest when Dr. Verma finally approved my discharge after a 2.5-week stay. I think I cried, but the day was a blur. My left hand was free since the sprain had partially recovered. I slept peacefully on my last night at the hospital, knowing I was going home early morning.
I woke up to find Esme, Alice, and Mom packing my essentials while Sam carried the flower bouquets out of the room. Edward was nowhere to be seen.
"Good morning, Bella!" Alice skipped over to kiss my cheek. "You are going home today. How excited are you?!" She squealed.
"As excited as you," I said with a chuckle.
Esme smiled at me. "Good morning, honey. Edward is signing your discharge forms. He'll be here any minute."
"Great, thanks."
Before Edward could arrive, my breakfast did. After I finished my meal, Carlisle came with my physician to perform my final exercises at the hospital. Since my left wrist was free, there were many exercises to do at home during my recovery.
Alice took the sheet of paper from the physician, which contained the list of exercises. I performed a series of respiratory exercises before he passed me a device for my wrist.
"Bella, for the last one, we'll use a hand extension exerciser to work the back of your hand and fingers. Place the band around your fingers…." The physician explained the exercise in detail and instructed me to follow his actions. I mimicked his movements until I felt a hint of pain in my wrist. "You need to do this 10-15 times a set."
"And how many sets?" Alice chimed as she typed the instructions on my phone.
"Two sets," The physician examined my wrist with a calculating face. "There may be swelling every now and then. Use ice-packs. And I've already prescribed the painkillers. Take every step of the progress with confidence for better healing and quicker recovery. I'll see you in ten days."
I thanked the physician before he left. My eyes stared daggers at the device in my hand. As if the respiratory spirometer wasn't enough. I would spend the next few weeks exercising my wrist, coughing into a machine, eating, and sleeping.
"Everything alright, Bella?" Carlisle asked curiously.
I shrugged. "I hate being this uncomfortable. I have to travel around in a wheelchair, and my chest hurts."
He patted my hand. "Things will get better. Everyone is here to help you. And you can call me any time of the day."
"Thanks, Carlisle," I smiled. "For saving my life. I knew Edward must have been less worried, knowing you would make me better."
"I wouldn't go that far. Edward was frustrated with me, but you are healing now. That's all that matters. You are like a daughter to me, Bella. You don't thank family," He kissed the top of my head, and I held in tears. "I'll see you at your home. Get some rest. I have to perform surgery in two hours."
Carlisle said goodbye to Esme before he left the room. Renée informed me that she had to return to Forks the next day since she had missed work. However, Edward reassured me that Emily would help me when he wasn't around. She was a certified caretaker.
Nurse Gillian entered the room to help me change into my regular clothes. She removed the tubes and gown before I donned a t-shirt and comfortable shorts. I thanked the nurse for helping me over the last two weeks before she left the room.
When Edward arrived holding a few files, his green eyes lit up to see me changed and ready to go. He offered me a charming grin that excited me to return to our place. He put the files on the bed and stood between my legs. I put my arms around his neck as our lips connected for a much-needed kiss. He smelled like fresh laundry and his Italian shower gel. Comforting.
"All packed?" Edward smiled at the other ladies in the room as he collected my phone and charger. "Bella seemed so at home here. Maybe we should let her stay a few more days."
I glared at him over the others laughing. "If you keep me here for another minute, I will walk home with this plaster."
He chuckled and kissed my lips soundly. "Duly noted, Miss. Swan. Let's go."
It was just Edward and me traveling to our home. Renée was going to visit and stay back in the evening. Alice and Esme returned to work. I think they were giving us some space after the turbulent three weeks. My medications never failed to miss as my eyes had begun drooping when the car pulled over outside the front porch. Edward gently lifted me out of the car and settled me in the wheelchair.
Many people from security were standing at the entrance during my arrival. I blushed from the unnecessary attention and nodded politely.
Emily gave me a quick hug and kissed my cheek. "Oh, it's so good to see you recovering, Bella. The hand is free!"
"Yeah, finally," I smiled.
"Edward," She pointed toward the entrance.
"Right," He squeezed my hand before stepping inside the house.
I frowned. "What happened?"
"Skylar might get hyper after seeing you," Emily explained. "She isn't her usual self lately with the crazy weeks."
"Edward didn't mention anything in detail to me," I felt a tinge of sadness creeping inside me.
"He didn't want you to worry, Bella. Skylar is fine. Let's go."
Sam held the door open, and Emily wheeled the chair inside the house. We paused in the hallway when Edward came into our view holding Skylar by her leash. Seth was a step behind, waving at me. Skylar barked a few times when her eyes fell on me. She tried to run toward me, but Edward reined her.
"Sky, we have to be gentle with mommy. She's hurt. No jumping, okay?" Edward instructed in a firm yet gentle tone.
My eyes filled with tears staring at my adorable Skylar. I missed her so much. She looked confused as her big eyes stared at my condition. She sniffed against the plaster as she came closer, and I leaned forward to touch her face. I groaned, feeling a painful spasm in my ribs. I sat straight again.
"Bella, don't," Edward whispered.
Skylar whined as she put her paw on my good leg, wanting me to pet her. I chuckled through my tears as she put her paws on my knees to stretch in my direction. I stroked her adorable face and kissed her head. "Hi, baby. I missed you so much. I'm sorry I kept you away from daddy and me. But we're going to spend a lot of time together. Yes, we are." I cooed gently. She wagged her tail and nuzzled my hand.
Edward walked closer to take her off the leash. "Thank god."
"Why was everybody worried about Skylar? She's doing fine."
"Oh baby, you weren't here for the last three weeks. Skylar has damaged a lot of sweaters from your closet. She was demanding to see you."
My eyes softened. "That's just because nobody gives her cuddles as I do. Right, honey?" I kissed her head.
"Are you hungry?" He asked.
I shook my head. "I'm feeling a bit tired. I think I need some sleep."
"Sure, love."
Emily wheeled me toward the bedroom, and I heard Edward and Skylar following me. Edward came over to lift me out of the chair, but I stopped him. I needed to practice. I slowly transferred myself from the chair onto the mattress. Edward smiled as he helped me lie down.
"I got you an elevation pillow for the plastered leg," Edward said as he adjusted the pillow under my injured leg. "It will keep your foot above the heart level."
"Thanks, sweetheart," I pecked his lips.
Skylar jumped on the bed to get under the covers beside me. Edward laughed and stroked her head. I hugged my furry baby close with a happy sigh. I loved that she was trying to comfort me. My sweet baby. I watched Edward put my phone on the nightstand.
"Bella, Agent Heidi Jones wants to speak with you about the incident. She needs your recount. Polo has already provided details from his side. If you don't mind, she wants to talk today evening."
"Sure," I swallowed hard. "I have to tell Agent Jones that James escaped."
"That's correct. If Heidi asks which direction, say that you were hiding behind Polo and couldn't see."
"Okay, I'll do that. Where is James?" I winced when my breathing sped.
He shook his head. "We're not discussing any stress-inducing topics right now. Just rest and heal."
"Rest and heal." I agreed.
Edward adjusted the sheets before drawing the curtains to darken the room. He gave me a quick kiss and left the room. I watched his retreated form with a sigh. I knew a lot was going on that Edward wasn't telling me. He dealt with media attention, federal agents, work, and looking after me. Yet, he never complained, not even once. The least I could do was look after myself for a fast recovery.
Rest and heal.
