Chapter 4
Jenna had a hard time adjusting to having her own place.
Unsurprisingly, since she had been living on the streets for two years, she often forgot that this location existed. Some nights she would flat out forget that she had a place to go and would idle around the bar considering chores to do until dawn.
Then she would remember the key in her pocket, and a fuzzy feeling would fill her belly at the realization that she had a home again.
Wade spent a lot of time babying her, walking her from the bar each night. It made sense to Jenna, since they lived in the same building. Jenna also learned that she could in fact cook food now with her little stove. It took forever to heat up and was a fire hazard, but holy hell she'd missed being able to have homecooked meals. She teared up the first time she managed to fry an egg.
Speaking of Wade, the merc was at the bar almost every night now. He came by late sometimes or hung out for hours, being a general nuisance or finding a gold card to slot in for the evening. Regardless, he waited for her at closing and walked her home without fail.
Jenna would be lying if she said she didn't feel safe with him beside her. He was absolutely massive next to her; a whole foot taller and at least one hundred pounds heavier than her.
During the days off Jenna was beginning to enjoy buying items for her house. She even bought her first phone. Two weeks into working at the bar, and ten days of having her own place, Jenna managed to pay for all the basics. She raided the dollar store for cheaper items and happily stacked everything in her house where it belonged. She especially loved her cute hello kitty apron she'd thrifted.
Something she'd also noticed since moving in was that Wade Wilson ate a fuck ton of take out. It was baffling that the man was so lean considering the shit he put into his body. She had decided she would do something for him since he had been so kind to her, and perhaps it would help with the trash pile perpetually stacked outside his door consisting of takeout boxes, cheap beer, and condom bins.
Jenna was wiping down the bar when the living fossil meandered through the doors. He came right up to the bar and she slid him his usual order and gave a head nod. Wade smirked.
"Look at you, thinking you know my order." He took a sip, then paused and stared at her. Jenna smirked.
"You order the same shit every time Wade. Tequila mixed with whatever the fuck's on tap." She cleaned a few more glasses as Kelly continued to serve drinks and clean up tables. It was a Monday night, the casual night on which Jenna would do inventory and catch up on cleaning with Kelly.
"I don't know, should I be creeped out or turned on? You watching me closely Babyface? Not that I could blame you. Everybody wants a piece of this tootsie roll these days." He took a long swig to shut himself up for once. He could never quite hold it all in when it came to Jenna. Said girl wiggled her brows at him.
"Tootsie roll? You think highly of yourself, don't you? I always saw you as the kind of suckers the doctor gives at his office. Y'know, the no name brands you take as a consolation prize?" Wade raised his eyebrows.
"Candy? Is that what your doctor gave you? Mine gave me the clap and some meds for it...never knew why he needed to do that to cure my sinus infection though. He just said to 'bend over and to relax, it'll all be over soon'."
"Of course mine gave me candy, it's the best way to make little girls keep a secret. 'Don't worry sweetheart, all the good little girls get a lollipop. Just don't tell Mommy and Daddy what happened. I just gave you a checkup alright?" Jenna pretended to zip her lips. Wade lifted his glass and quirked a brow.
"Did we have the same doctor?" Jenna giggled at that before holding up a glass of water to cheers with him.
"To child molesters." As she said this Weasel walked over to them and paused.
"God dammit just get a room you fucking freaks." He said while pouring himself a beer. Jenna laughed, though sounded a bit uncomfortable. Wade and Jenna made eye contact and he could see the defensiveness in her eyes creeping back. Wade jumped at the chance to cut the tension though and made a show of 'choking' on his drink and spitting some of it out onto an unsuspecting Weasel.
"Hey hey hey! Be nicer to the little lady! She hasn't even hit puberty and you're talking about her like she's ready for marriage. It's her daddy's job to auction her off when she's ready." Weasel wiped the spat-out beer from his shirt in a slow effort.
"Yeah well it's probably the least confusing boner you've ever had." Weasel's face contorted then. "God why are you making me think about you and a boner and- 'kay fuck it. I'm going to the back. Jenna finish inventory and you can leave early. I'll close with Kelly."
Jenna looked confused, but humoured, as she watched her kinda boss kinda not her boss walk away from them. She looked to Wade then, who was wiping away the spit from his chin. Jenna grabbed a rag and wiped the bar in front of him before showing a toothy grin as she tried to cut the tension.
"Hey, five more weeks and it'll be legal. Till then you're a child predator on top of a living fossil." She turned her back to him, and he had the whole view of her tight skinny jeans and had to look at the ceiling.
'Don't fucking remind me.' He fought a cringe as he chugged more of his drink.
"No better than the doctor I guess." He said after finishing his drink. He snuck a look at her as she adjusted her top that had rolled up, showing a slim line of skin at the base of her back. 'Fuck me.'
"Oh yeah, what kind of food do you like?" Jenna asked as she turned back to him. Wade was a little caught off guard are jolted to aggressively meet her gaze when she looked at him. She didn't react to his odd behaviour, and instead he focused on the fading bruises around her left eye.
"What?"
"What kind of food do you like? I can finally cook again and wanted to make you something as a... y'know... a thank you." She felt the steam in her engine fizzle out as she lost her nerve. He was looking at her like he wanted to be anywhere else right now.
"Food- I like food. Mostly edible but who's complaining." He paused, staring at her, then spun on his heel and left her there. Jenna wasn't sure what was up but decided that Wade was just being his usual weird self and left it be.
After doing inventory though, Jenna didn't see Wade at all. She asked Kelly if she'd seen him.
"He went somewhere with Kandy a little while ago. No idea where though."
Jenna was a bit off put at that, but figured having a bodyguard every night was unrealistic. She had her switchblade on her still, which gave her some confidence. She felt a huge chunk of that crumble though as three figures walked into the bar.
She recognized the middle one as the guy who grabbed her a couple nights ago. His eyes locked onto her, he stopped. His buddies did the same. Jenna didn't back down though and stood a bit taller, fingering the switchblade in her pocket. They sauntered up to the bar, two of them had broken noses from the look of it. Definitely Jenna's work.
"You, you little fucking cunt." The middle guy said as she stood in front of her. He didn't look as impressive as she remembered. All three were scrawny, barely taller than her, with missing teeth and gross scratched skin. Addicts with no strength to them except the god given grace of being born a man.
"That's my middle name, how'd you know?" She flipped the blade open in her pocket. Her jaw felt tight as she watched one of the men try to walk behind the bar. Kelly blocked his march a few feet from her. The middle guy hissed.
"I just wanna talk," he stepped right up to the bar as the third man tried to circle her other side. "Get some payment for the mess you did to my face when me and my boys just wanted to show you a good time."
"Just a little fun is all." The guy blocked by Kelly said. Jenna observed the crusted mess of his nose. No doubt a mess from snorting coke with the damage done. She smirked.
"It's a fucking improvement."
The guy to her left grabbed Kelly at the same time the two grabbed at her. Jenna was faster though and swung her blade out of her pocket, aiming to stab the one to her right in the shoulder. She missed though, surprising herself when she caught him under the armpit. The blade went in so deep and the man froze as the other yanked her from behind the bar by her neck. Jenna fought like a feral animal, reaching up to claw at his face and yanked his broken nose. He struggled to hold onto her and attempted to choke her before giving up when she twisted his broken nose. She fell to the ground and scrambled to get away.
A whistle broke through the fight as both looked to see Wade not ten feet from them. His gun pointed at the man. Without warning he shot him between the eyes. Blood and brain matter splattered onto Jenna from where she was, the body falling back against the bar before sliding to the floor. The only other one standing held Kelly, who had bit at his arms in an attempt to flee. Realizing he was the only one left, he slowly slipped away from Kelly, who collapsed to get out of the way as Wade pointed his gun at him.
"Don't-!"
BANG!
The rest of the bar had been relatively empty, but the amount of ammunition that had been drawn when the girls had been threatened was enough to cause a city block shoot out. Kelly looked to the guy Jenna had stabbed and kicked him with her boot. A pool of blood was beneath him, other than the sounds of a dying man he made no movement. The entire bar relaxed as a good chunk went back to what they were doing.
Wade glanced to Kelly, who picked herself up off the floor with the help of James and Booth. The two large men muttered about the audacity of crackheads before dragging the bodies into the back.
The merc then looked to Jenna, who was still sat on the floor as if ready to flee. She stared at the blood on her boots as though surprised. He walked closer, kneeling in front of her. She didn't move.
"C'mon Babyface," he called to her gently. She slowly looked up to him, her expression not changing. Definitely in shock. He offered a hand. "Let's get you home."
She stared at his hand for a moment, not completely registering what it was, then reached for his hand. She flinched and stopped though, looking at the blood coating her right hand.
"I'm all bloody." She said in a deadpanned voice. Wade snorted, then grabbed her hand anyway and yanked her to her feet. She looked up at him as her feet touched the ground.
"Blood is totally normal the first time. That's what the doctor told me." He said in his usual cheery tone as he looked down at her barely inches from him.
"Sorry, I've never been the one putting it in. First time nerves." Her widened eyes had a relaxed a bit at his casualness. Wade smiled at her.
"Yeah, this is real fucking sweet and all, but can you guys leave before you go full blown Carrie on us?" Weasel, who had hid until the attack was over, glanced at the mess all over the bar. "It looks like a high school period party went wrong in here."
"Do they even do those?" Kelly asked, scrubbing at her bloody arms. James came back in then, having washed his hands of the last body he dragged to God knows where. "Hey big man, mind walking me home tonight?"
Jenna refocused on Wade and noticed their still clasped hands. She opened hers, noting the stickiness of the drying blood. She swallowed a lump in her throat, then touched her face and hair. More stickiness.
"I need to get changed." She muttered, before realizing she had to walk home like this. Wade pressed between her shoulder blades and guided her to the bathroom.
"Wash up, would be a bit awkward to meet a cop on the road with a bloody arm. Well, we could say we both lended a helping fist-"
"Yeah- no. I'll wash up. Sorry Kelly." Jenna said, feeling bad the woman got dragged into this. She snickered.
"Not my first rodeo hun. Get cleaned up." She nodded to the bathroom. Weasel held up his arms, one of which held a mop.
"The fuck am I? The muppet who only gets screentime when it's relevant? Fuck you people."
Jenna looked at herself in the bathroom mirror, almost throwing up when she saw what could only be brain matter tangled into her curly blonde hair. She couldn't get at it right now, not until she got home and bathed, so she tied it up into a bun and hid the majority of the evidence before scrubbing her arms under the sink. She couldn't save her bloodied sweater, forcing her to just wear her threadbare tank top. It was always so chilly in the bar, and she shivered as she stepped back out. Only God knew how the hookers didn't stab their client's eyes out with their nipples it was fucking freezing in there. The bar owner never turned up the heat until it was below freezing outside.
When she returned to Wade, he took one look at her, then the bundle in her arms, before frowning.
"Where the fuck's your jacket?" He looked behind the bar but didn't see it.
"I didn't bring it, it's been warmer outside so I just wear my sweater in and out." She explained, thinking it was the same temperature as the chilly weather outside right now.
"Nuh uh, you're gunna poke somebody's eye out with those." He shrugged off his jacket and chucked it over her head. She yanked it off of her head and glared at him.
"You staring at my tits, you fossil?" Wade let out an uncomfortable laugh.
"Me staring at them? They've been looking at me like they're going to steal my tootsies any second." He said, pointedly staring her in the eyes. Jenna covered herself with his jacket, surprised by how large and warm it felt over her. She decided to drop the incident, not having the energy to keep it up after the events. Wade grabbed her upper arm and escorted her out of the bar before letting go.
"You really are a danger magnet, you know that?" Wade commented. Jenna laughed.
"Me? Dude I work in a bar filled with mercenaries." She looked up at him at the same time he looked down at her. She missed a bit of blood on her neck, but he didn't want to bother her too much. His gaze ventured back to her eyes, and he had to quickly look away at the open expression on her face.
"Seen any good movies lately?" He abruptly asked, changing the subject completely. Jenna didn't question it, getting quite used to his erratic behavior.
"I haven't seen a movie in like, five years." She looked ahead as Wade gasped dramatically.
"What? No way! Movie night, my treat." He grabbed her arm again, yanking her along. "You poor sweet little angel, how could you have been treated like this?"
Jenna couldn't help but laugh as she trotted to keep up.
That was how she found herself standing in Wade's apartment. It was a lot fuller than hers, but not nearly as nice looking. There were holes in the walls and walls entirely missing between rooms. The shower and toilet was closed off but the rest seemed to be fair game. She was a bit distracted by the millions of knick knacks and posters everywhere. Some had fallen onto the floor; others were peeling slowly.
Jenna was a bit stunned when Wade walked up to her.
"Not that it's not adorable how you put your hair up Babyface, but I'm pretty sure you'll want a shower more than I want to avoid more blood on the sofa." He said. Jenna paused, before nodding and jabbing a thumb to the door. She had dumbly just followed in and forgot how disgusting she felt.
"I-I'll go take a shower and change-" she paused. "I think I have a clean shirt still."
"Fine fine, but be quick, I'm making chimichangas." He then pulled his shirt over his head before checking on the kitchen. Jenna froze where she was, watching as he walked towards the oven. She watched the muscles on his back dip down below the waistband of his pants and lightly bit her bottom lip.
'Fuck me.'
Wade turned at that exact moment to look at her. She stared pointedly into his eyes as innocently as possible. He frowned.
"Why are you standing there? Shoo shoo! Or you'll miss the movie!" He pulled on two Hello Kitty oven mitts and Jenna smiled before heading to her own apartment.
She scrubbed the absolute fuck out of her hair, trying to get all the blood out. Twenty minutes later Jenna finally got out of the shower and into sweatpants with another hoodie. She knocked on Wade's door before entering. He was setting up the food in front of a small tv. Jenna was both thankful and disappointed that he now dawned a hoodie.
He glanced at her, seeing the way her wet hair dripped down her hoodie and could tell she rushed to get back. He rubbed his hands together and grinned at her.
"I am about to treat you to the greatest actress of all time... Barbra Streisand." He then popped in a movie titled Yentl before flopping down on the couch and motioning her to join. Jenna stared for a second, before a grin slipped onto her lips as she slipped onto the couch next to him. It wasn't a big couch; their knees were bumping occasionally as they both sat cross-legged. Jenna grabbed a chimichanga from the table in front of her, she settled back and looked over to Wade.
Her eyes traced the outline of his nose, lips, jaw, and neck. She watched him swallow some food, then take another bite.
She remembered the void of emotion on his face as he shot the addict earlier that night. How easily he had done it. A small part of her wondered why she wasn't afraid of him for it, but a big part of her remembered how much shit he had done.
He literally killed a guy for her.
Well, he had been disrupting the bar, which nobody liked. She was also sure if he didn't do it James was ready to step up. But still, the look on his face should've been terrifying.
Jenna just felt safe.
"You're missing all of it." Wade warned between mouthfuls of food, glancing at her. They locked eyes for a second, and Wade had to pause his chewing.
That look, that open, honest, innocent expression. Jenna was the one to break eye contact as she looked to the tv.
"My bad, I thought I saw spinach between your teeth and thought 'how long has that shit been there?'." She finally started watching the movie, but Wade was still staring at her.
He traced the outline of her nose lips and jaw, watching as she swallowed some food. He was weirdly fixated on watching her open her jaw to take a bite of the burrito, attempting to fit a good chunk of it in her mouth but being unable. He swallowed, before forcing himself to look away and stay as still as possible while aggressively staring at the screen.
Wade knew right then that he was in trouble.
And he had no one to blame but himself.
It's such a weird thing to write for Wade in this scenario, because I cannot imagine the absolute panic going throguh someone's head when they realize they are attracted to a minor and both care about them as a person and want to look out for them, but also are incredibly terrified that they are catching feelings and if that makes them a pedo. Not that he's done anything wrong wrong, but honey it's a slippery slope! So i kinda feel for Wadey boy, but I'm sure it'll all work out... right? I'm just going to let myself run away with this.
God I'mon amother fucking roll this week. All honesty I havent been home this much in lord knows how long.
