After hanging the phone up Nick had tore across town heading back to Pine Acres. Pulling into the parking lot Judy had flown out the truck and disappeared into the building coming back five minutes later with a confused Stella and Blake carrying luggage. Rolling down his window Nick called out to the pair, "throw your stuff in the bed!"
Blake and Stella did as they were asked as Judy opened up the passenger door and slid her seat forward. "Come on you two let's go!" Judy yelled.
Blake and Stella hastily shoved their stuff in the bed of the truck, Stella closing the tailgate once they were done. "What's the rush sis?" Blake asked as he was all but shoved into the truck by Judy.
It was Nick who answered, "we gotta get back to Zootopia fast and I did offer you a ride!"
Stella jumped into the truck and Judy slammed her seat back into place and hopped in. The second the door shut Nick slammed the truck into gear and peeled out of the parking lot sending Stella and Blake into the back of their seats. "Umm seriously what's the rush!" Stella asked as she nervously yanked at her seatbelt to get it loose.
Judy let out a whoop as Nick drifted around a corner. "Now that's how you drive slick!" She then turned around to face the terrified Coyote and bunny couple and said, "Me and Nick just figured out what's causing predators to go savage! They're being dosed by Nighthowlers! So vacations over!"
Blake and Stella's eyes widened and Stella hollered out, "okay in that case! Step on it!"
*about an hour later*
Nick was still zooming towards Zootopia when Stella had a question. "Hey Nick? Judy? Where's your stuff at? I didn't see anything in the bed when I put our stuff in it."
Nick and Judy immediately looked at eachother letting out a simultaneous "oops."
Nick then turned to focus back on the road remarking, "we definitely left them back at the Warren. We kinda forgot about that in our excitement."
Blake looked at Nick and Judy and then asked, "but you did remember to at least let mom and dad know..right?"
Nick and Judy looked at eachother again, their ears slowly lowering. They then faced forward again and Judy let out a "sweet cheese and crackers."
Nick nodded in agreement. "They won't be too mad right?" Nick asked hopefully.
*less than three minutes later*
"YOU'RE WHAT!?" Judy and Nick flinched away from Judy's phone which was on speaker, the intensity of Bonnie Hopps voice telling them that they were indeed in trouble.
Judy repeated what she had previously said. "We're on our way back to Zootopia mom."
"Why!? You've only been here for a couple days! Things haven't even REMOTELY calmed down there!"
"We know Bonnie but that's why we're going back! We figured it out! We figured out what's making all the predators go savage!" Nick said.
"Really!? What is it!?"
"Midnicampum holicithias!" Judy called out.
"The flower we use to keep bugs off the produce?..well you're Uncle Terry did eat one whole when we were kits, and he did go nuts. Took a chunk out of my arm in his state…so that does fit…But I don't understand why this requires you two to go back to Zootopia? You told your brother right Nicholas."
"Yes Bonnie, we called him immediately and filled him in. We're meeting with him at ZBI headquarters." Nick replied.
"Then you two shouldn't have to return! Let Jameson handle it! It's dangerous for you both there and it's a federal problem! You two wouldn't be able to do anything!"
Judy let out a sigh. Of course her mother was being a worry wart. "Mom it's not just a federal matter, it's a joint law enforcement effort to end this thing. With the cause now known it will be all paws on deck now more than ever and besides I need to give a full report. As for Nick I doubt they will involve him to much…"
"And I am fine with that." Nick added
"But he's my chauffeur and Blake and Stella's as well by the way. Nick was here only because I was mom. But now that the mammals that sent me home decided I no longer need to remain neither does he mom. But on top of all of that mom the reason I am racing back is because the chaos the city is going through is my fault. It's my mess and you and dad always taught us that if we make a mess we clean it up. I need to help stop this in any capacity they'll let me."
The line was silent for a moment and for a moment Nick and Judy thought they hit a dead zone but a long sigh came through the phone. "Okay…well I know I can't convince you two to turn around and come back. So please, just be safe okay?"
"Can do Bonnie." Nick said.
Judy picked up her phone and replied "I'll try my best mom."
"That's all I ask you too. Now can you hand me to your brother Judy?"
Judy turned in her seat to look at Blake who nodded that it was okay. "Alright mom I'll pass the phone."
Judy went to pass it to Blake but Nick held up a paw to stop her. "Wait hold on Carrots! Hey Bonnie?"
"Yes Nicholas?"
"Can you send me and Judy's stuff to us? We mayy have forgotten them in our rush to leave."
Another sigh came over the line.
*3 hours later, Jameson*
Jameson was in the FETRU briefing room mingling with his team and Bogo's while they waited for Hopps and his little brother to arrive. The room was all predators in tactical gear and while the ZPD mammals were awake and fidgeting with nervousness, the FETRU mammals were all napping while they could. All except Hunter who was standing with Jameson.
"Wilde, when should your brother and Hopps be getting here?" Hunter asked as he surveyed the room.
James looked at his watch, "if they remained on schedule? Within the next twenty or so minutes."
Hunter nodded. "Good, ZPD's mammals are getting antsy."
"Can you blame them? Cities been falling apart and they're on the front lines. On top of that several of them have prey mammals for partners, they were surprised when only they were pulled. They're looking at room of all predators and it's got em worried on the bigger implications it can have." Jameson remarked as he looked upon the nervous ZPD mammals.
Bogo who had been leaning on a wall nearby, walked over and added, "they also don't know why they're here. I kept them in the dark about their summoning, just told them to get their tactical gear on and load up. I want no risk of leaks until Hopps arrives and gives us all she's got. All they know is they've been selected for a joint operation with FETRU on a potential terrorist threat to the city. That's all I felt I could trust saying at the precinct."
Jameson crossed his arms and looked over his shoulder to look up at Bogo. "Smart. If howevers behind this has ears in your department that type of information wouldn't tip them off."
Bogo let out a snort and crossed his massive arms, "just how sure are you there is a mole in my department Agent Wilde? I know you're alluding to it enough."
Jameson shrugged. "Basically a hundred percent. The way things are going, has been going tells me what I need to know. Riots pop up specifically in the areas you aren't, predators go savage after a patrol leaves the area. It all is too coordinated to be happenstance. These types of things happening in the exact way that keeps your forces spread thin and maximizes damage? No chance unless they have someone in the ZPD telling them when and where."
Bogo pinched his snout and let out a frustrated groan. "I hate the fact that your logic is sound."
Jameson went back to looking forward. "So do I Bogo. So do I."
*19 minutes later*
Jameson had his phone linked to the cameras in the parking garage so he got a ping when a vehicle entered. Getting a ping James saw his brother's truck pulling in and let out a "finally" before shouting "FETRU! UP!" Every single member of FETRU immediately woke up from their naps and started standing, some even stretching out. Within 30 seconds every single mammal of FETRU was standing and ready.
Jameson nodded in approval and then walked to the briefing room doors opening them just as Nick and Judy arrived at them. "Hey glad you two could make it! But uh…who are they?" James then pointed at Stella and Blake who were a couple steps behind Nick and Judy.
Judy turned to look at them and replied, "oh that's my brother Blake and his girlfriend Stella. They came out about their relationship and naturally it didn't go over well so they had to leave Bunnyburrow for their safety."
Blake then piped up taking a step closer to Jameson. "We hitched a ride with Nick here and I know we're not law enforcement so we can't be here. But don't worry we'll be out of your fur as soon as you point me to a front entrance. Me and Stella will call a cab to go to the Meadowlands and be out of here."
Jameson shook his head. "No you will not. Currently there is 16 separate protests/riots throughout downtown and savannah central. Most of the 16 are blocking major pathways through the city. You wouldn't get there by car and due to the state of emergency in the city the rail lines have been shut down as mammals are supposed to be confined to the districts they were in. There's also a curfew in effect. It's impossible to get to the meadowlands."
Blake let out a surprised, "oh." His ears going down to his back. "So what can we do?"
James promptly reached into one of his pouches and tossed Blake his apartment keys. "Here. Catch."
Blake caught the keys and inspected them. "What are these for?"
"Y'all passed a desk on your way here. Backtrack and hit the bell, a receptionist will arrive and escort you to the front. Call a cab and tell them to take you to the Grand Pangolin Arms. It's 10 minutes away. Slummy complex but my apartment is upgraded. Those are the keys. Top floor third door on the left. You'll stay there." Jameson explained.
Blake looked up at him in shock. "You'd do that for us? Offer up your own apartment?"
Jameson nodded. "Yep. For a fellow inter and one of Judy's siblings to boot? Of course."
It was at this point Stella joined Blake at his side, giving him a side hug. She then gave James a beaming smile and said, "thank you so much for this. I promise we'll be good house guests."
James waved a paw dismissively. "Of that I have no doubt. There's plenty of food you can both eat so don't be shy. Wifi password is Starlights, there's a spare bedroom you can sleep in, stay out of my bedroom which is the back left door, and this probably goes without saying but once you get to the apartment, don't leave it."
Blake and Stella nodded several times and Stella said, "you got it." And Blake added, "yeah I figured now would be a bad time to take a tour of the city."
James chuckled at that and replied, "give it a month or so and then take the tour. Now you two should get going, we need to get this show started."
"Of course." Stella said and she and Blake quickly said goodbye to Nick and Judy before heading back the way they came.
Nick watched them as they left and pointed a thumb in their direction. "Uh, should I join them James? I'm a civilian you know."
It was then that Chief Bogo appeared behind Jameson. Folding his massive arms he looked down at Nick and said, "that's incorrect ZPD Consultant Wilde. You're not just welcome here, I dare say you're needed here."
Nick was taken aback by that. "Uh, what?"
Bogo then cracked a rare smile. "What? Do you really think I would A, let it be known a mere civilian helped one of my best officers solve the largest case in the better part of the century. And B, let you go unrewarded for your aid to Hopps when I myself failed to give it? You're a good mammal Wilde, a better one than me I dare say. You called me out on my bull and if I'm honest kept me from making what would have been the worst mistake in my career. You got guts, you got bravery, and you got loyalty. All good qualities. Qualities I dare say my department could use. But that's for another time. For now, lend your aid once more and help us solve this thing."
Nick was absolutely floored at what he heard, placing a paw on his heart he said. "Why chief! You do have a heart!"
Judy immediately rolled her eyes and Chief Bogo let out a snort. "Don't make me take it back Wilde!"
James shook his head at the situation and turned to head back into the briefing room. "Come on you two, there's a whole group of mammals antsy to hear what you have to say."
The duo shared a glance at each other before following Jameson in. Entering the briefing room Nick was a little intimidated at seeing a bunch of predators decked out in tactical gear staring at him as he walked behind his brother and the chief of police to the front of the room. Judy on her part felt a little nervous and underdressed but steeled her nerves for the task ahead, besides, Jameson had her gear here somewhere.
Reaching the front of the room Jameson, Judy, Nick and Bogo turned to face the assembled group of mammals and Jameson said, "please be seated."
The assembled group all sat down and once the last mammal was seated Jameson began filling them in. "Thank you. Now I know you all are wondering why you are here, and why on the ZPD side only predators were brought in. I also know you are wondering why Officer Hopps and ZPD Consultant Wilde are here with me and dressed in civilian clothes. The reason they and you all are here is today while on leave for their safety Officer Hopps and Consultant Wilde discovered what is making the predators of this city go savage."
The room promptly erupted with a barrage of questions and they were quickly silenced by Chief Bogo. "SHUT IT!"
"Thank you Chief Bogo. No this is not a sickness, no it is not a disease, no it is not a simple revertance to their primitive and savage ways. The cause of this is a carefully carried out domestic terrorist plot against the predators of this city to sow discord and chaos, fear and hate. Probably with the goal of either collaring predators like dark days of the past, driving them out of the city, or the potential mass genocide of all predators. This terroristic act is done by the result of a toxin produced by a flower. Scientific name, Midnicampum holicithias. Common name, Nighthowlers.
When introduced into the bloodstream or ingested the toxin in this flower causes ANY mammal predator or prey to go in layman's terms, savage. Now normally the toxin wears off in a matter of hours or days based on the amount. However we know this is not the case for those afflicted here. Meaning the flower was engineered into some sort of cocktail that floods the synapses overloading them and flooding the afflicted's system. How predators are being dosed we are currently unsure, but the fact remains that this is the cause. The abnormalities in the afflicted predators system line up with the abnormalities that come with being in contact with Nighthowlers. Our doctors simply were unaware what they were looking at as this flower is not a city staple and its only common origin is the Tri-Burrows where it is used to keep bugs off of produce.
The use of this flower shows cunning and careful planning, years of it and indicates a large and intricate plot. Now that we know what is afflicting the innocent predators of this city the only thing we need to find out is how they are getting these flowers, and for that I turn this over to ZPD Officer Judith L. Hopps. Officer Hopps?"
Jameson then turned to Judy and she took a deep breath. Receiving two thumbs up from Nick she grinned and with a higher confidence stepped forward. "Thank you Agent Wilde. As Agent Wilde stated Nighthowlers rarely leave the Tri-Burrows, and no large shipments are sent into the city as Zootopia has no practical use for the flower. However, some small flower shops carry these flowers for small use in small greenhouses. Now rather than track all purchases and any shipments I have an alternative lead. On my second day on the beat I encountered a weasel named Duke Weaselton (every present ZPD mammal let out a groan) robbing a small floral shop. I gave chase, arrested him, and recovered what he stole. Nighthowler bulbs. Now what practical reason does he have to steal a flower that has no resale value? I think we need to have a word with Mr. Weaselton. Is he still in custody, Chief Bogo?"
Bogo pinched his snout and then shook his head. "Unfortunately no. As I told you Hopps he somehow gets off scot free every time he's arrested. He got released not two days later."
James raised a furred digit and said, "I can actually explain that. Good old Duke is a confidential informant for the agency. He gets arrested, he calls us, gives some information, and we get him out."
Bogo shook his head at that. "I knew it. I will put out an APB for Weaselton immediately and have him brought in. But it will take awhile, he has no known address and the city is a mess."
Nick then raised his right paw. "I think I can help with that."
