Kaito arrived home at last. The sensation of ache almost felt with every arch in his soles. He opened the front door with his keys and was welcomed by the tidy foyer. Photographs of his family were hooked on the wall, above the shoe cabinet at the side. The young man closed the door behind him and removed his shoes. With muscle memory, Kaito put it away his school shoes in his designated space at the shoe cabinet.
As he entered the living room, Kaito was greeted by his mother in limb-covered pyjamas with an apron from the kitchen.
"Welcome home, Kaito! How was school?" His mother, Kanako, smiled. Kaito got his sapphire eyes and his obsession with ice cream from her.
Their fridge never had a time when it was not occupied by a tub of ice cream. It belonged to either son or mother. There were arguments from the past over one stealing the other's tub of ice cream.
But in the end, Kaito and his mum reconciled and shared the ice cream together, to the amusement of Kaito's father and elder sister.
"It was fine, Mum. Just the usual classes. Though I have less homework this week."
"Oh that's good to know!" Kaito's mother replied whilst resumed her preparations for dinner.
"Is there anything I can do for you?" Kaito approached her and stood nearby.
"Can you get the laundry hanging outside and fold them for me? And also run the vacuum cleaner in the living room?" Kaito's mum had requested, not once removed her gaze from vegetables being cut, and slid the diced ingredients from the chopping board to the boiling pot.
"Sure, I can do that." Kaito went on to complete those errands, after he dropped his stuff in his bedroom and changed from his school uniform.
The errands took him long enough that his father, Naoto, arrived from work, and dinner was finalised by Kanako. They had dinner together at the table and managed to call Kaito's sister for a video chat on her day-off.
The family talked as if Kaito's sister was with them at the table. It was a pleasant time for them to bond with the busy patterns of each member. Kaito studied in school and had his own social life. His father worked full-time while his mother worked part-time in different schedules. His sister worked overseas.
Eventually, dinner finished and everyone retired to their own spaces. In Kaito's case, he went back to his room and did his own thing (mostly studying) in privacy.
He closed the door behind him and flopped on top of his bed. Now that Kaito realised, nothing really changed with his room through the years.
There was the occasional relocation of furniture. But the familiar façade of his bedroom was still present. He still had the brown wooden closet. His grey study table was still sturdy and used since primary school. The bed frame also served its purpose to this day alongside the table. The only things that changed were his sheets and his mattress whenever it needed to be replaced.
On top of his study table were things typically present for a studentβpens, sticky notes, page tabs, and other stationary for note-taking. There was a small calendar hung on the wall where the table was pushed against it. On the side were three photo frames.
The photo on the left might be the oldest. It was a photo of Kaito, Len, and Rin from seventh grade. They were in their old school uniforms on the school grounds of YMH with booths and crowds in the background.
It was during the anticipated annual open day, one of the few events opened for outsiders. They had huge smiles in front of the camera. Kaito was on the left side, his arm hid behind Rin's shoulders. She stood in the middle, hands behind her back. Len was beside Rin on the right. From how his arm was positioned, he held Rin on her back.
Len and Rin were more squeezed together; left not one bit of space behind compared to Rin and Kaito's small gap.
The photo reminded Kaito how much they all changed since then.
Rin in the photo had shorter hair, only barely reached her shoulders. She had her iconic ribbon that she still wore today. But only in the photo she had two bobby pins that supported her fringe which covered her forehead, and another pair on the side of her head.
Len had his hair gelled upwards to create spike-like shapes to create his odd yet recognisable hairstyle. He tied the rest of his hair in a short ponytail.
Kaito still had his hair styled towards his right and on the same length until his nape, and his blue scarf was still with him.
All three of them looked genuinely happy in the photo, with dazzling smiles and sparkling eyes captured on that single shot.
The next frame in the middle was another photo of Kaito, Rin and Len.
They wore the prussian blue togas of their school on top of their school uniforms. Kaito stood in the middle with Len on the left side, and Rin on the other side, matching cap on her hand.
All of them looked more mature and older, compared to the photo from seventh grade. Yet lost in that very photo was the warmth they once shared and evident in the first photo. Rin, Len, and Kaito looked more formal and less cramped together.
This might be the first and only photo with Rin and Len so near to one another since they broke up. During the moment that shot was taken, he thought it was not intentional since Len suddenly approached Kaito from behind him while he talked to Rin.
But it still brought nostalgia to Kaito, even when he and Len separated after graduation and barely got much contact with each other these days.
Kaito needed to change it.
And there was the last photo. It was a group photo of him with Rin, Gakupo, Luka, Miku, and Oliver with the most enthusiastic smiles.
They wore their sports uniform with different accessories of a specific colour. They had all the colours of the school's four teams at last year's annual sports day.
It was one of the most fun days Kaito considered ever since he entered CFH. All of them participated in at least one game and whenever they ended up competing with each other, they got into a friendly competitive spirit and made the games more enjoyable. Rin and Miku were not the most athletic bunch in the group. But they still joined and ended up enjoying the event.
Kaito realised that he did not have any homework for tomorrow. So technically he had free time for himself. Which meant he could contact Lily and get the plan going soon.
On his bed, Kaito rested his body. His torso flat on the bed's surface as he searched for Lily's inbox. He noticed she was online at the moment.
He hoped she was not busy, or away from her phone. Their last conversation was a week ago when Kaito commented on one of Lily's posts with the twenty-four hour limit and they made quick catch-ups on each other. They were still on speaking terms, but not as frequent as before since they now led separate lives.
That reason is why Kaito hoped for the best as he began to type up his message.

Lily: Hi Kai! Nice to see you sending a message today! I'm good, how are you? I hope you're alright there! If I can do what you're asking for, I'm on it!
Kaito: I'm also good! Just wondering if you have time to meet up with my friends and I. We want to get your permission with this plan one of my friends thought of.
Lily: That's a completely random thing you guys are doing and I get to have a say? π² Will Rin be with you?
Kaito: That's the catch, the plan is for Rin. You see, some drama happened in our class recently bec Rin roasted the resident annoying girl on how her boyfriend will break-up with her soon. My friends thought it was completely out of character for Rin to say that and her whole pessimism with romance.
Kaito: I confronted Rin and she told me she got triggered and had flashbacks of Len. And then one of them was told by Rin that I tell the story. So I told my friends about Rin and Len.
Kaito: That's why one of them decided that we should reunite them for closure at least, not make them date again, before Rin leaves sometime soon.
Lily: Woah wait a minute that's a lot to process mate π Give me a few seconds to read!
Lily: Hmm I don't get how that's out of character? Rin was never hesitant to call out shit to everyone LOL or did she lie low with you guys there? Lily is typing...
Lily: Ohh. OOOHHHHH. Now it makes sense. The last time we talked about Len, Rin didn't say much. She's not angry at him anymore. But she never brings him up. Though when we talked about this book we just finished, she mentioned hating the feeling when things are left unresolved. Said she wants a chance to go back and address all of it before it's too late.
Lily: I thought she was just talking in context of the book (I can lend you my copy if you want!). Now after what you told me, maybe she does want to reconcile with him.
Lily: I haven't heard much about Len, to be honest. But I do agree that with Rin leaving, I think she would appreciate the last chance.
Lily: I'm saying this now, your friend is insane for thinking of this plan π But she's brave enough, I commend her for it. Hell yeah, sign me up with your plan! I'm available on the weekend after this meeting with my volunteering org! I can meet you guys anywhere.
Kaito: Awesome! Thank you so much for taking your time to hear me out here! Where does your org meet? Maybe my friends and I can meet you there? We don't want you travelling too far just for us!
.
.
Kaito just realised Lily would be busy with how she was active in her multiple volunteer groups. Now Kaito felt ashamed to pull away Lily from her time to rest after all her volunteering work aside from school.

Lily: We're actually near the city where our graduation venue was. We used to do our meetings farther but our latest project is based there in the meantime! Not too far from home but an unfamiliar place I can explore in my free time. We wrap up by 1:00pm on Saturday and we all can grab lunch together while we talk! :D
Kaito: There's that big shopping centre in that place! We can meet up there, my friends wouldn't mind the distance since they've always wanted to visit that area. I'll have to get back with you at the meeting time since I have to confirm it with my friends if you don't mind.
Lily: I definitely don't mind! Thanks for reaching out to me Kai! I have to head out and do some studying now D: I have a test tomorrow and I'm not ready!
Kaito: I should be thanking YOU, Lily! Thank you for agreeing with this! And good luck with the test! You've always been one of the insanely smart people in our class, I'm sure you can ace that! I'll let you know if my friends can do it in the afternoon on Saturday.
Lily: It's no problem, Kai! That's what friends are for! And I'm excited about the prospect of helping Rin. God knows that girl needs some peace from her last relationship. I still thought she and Len were good for each other
Lily: But oh well, such is life. Anyway, I'll share more of my thoughts on the weekend! See you soon, Kai! I look forward to meeting your friends!
Kaito: My friends are also excited to meet you, see you soon! And all the best with your test!

Now that the meeting was settled, Kaito only has to share the news with his friends and start the planning process from there. A new notification popped up on his screen. He tapped the prompt and was brought to a new and empty inbox.

Miku Hatsune
Anyway, this will be our group chat where we talk about the plan! Obvs, we can't do it in our main one since Rin is there. As much as this hurts to exclude her, this is for her sake!
Oliver Cody and Gakupo Kamui reacted with π on Miku Hatsune's message
Gakupo Kamui
I was honestly going to message one of yall on how we can talk outside school without Rin. But anyway, you already did this group chat.
Miku Hatsune
SOOO did I miss anything while I had to stay back a while ago?
Gakupo Kamui
Actually, yes. This might be a big development for you relating to the plan.
Miku Hatsune
HOLY CRAP Ill do a call
Miku Hatsune is inviting you to a call with Gakupo Kamui and 2 others
Kaito pressed the green Answer button. He was brought to a lobby.
On top of his name were Miku's and Oliver's. Below were Gakupo's and Luka's who both just joined a few seconds apart that made the familiar sound effect of someone joining the call.
"Hello~" Kaito greeted the newcomers.
"So what do you mean there's news?" Miku went straight to business with enthusiasm.
"Len is still in love with Rin! Like, for real to this day!" Gakupo replied with a similar energy as Miku's.
"I KNEW IT!" Miku's voice became louder. "But how can you say that? Did you guys see something in Rin's phone?"
Gakupo reacalled the experience of their discovery. "Kai did, and I was just watching while I looked out for him in case Rin finished with Mayu. I'm not kidding Miks, when I say we both saw Len send Rin messages for years. We're talking every Christmas, New Years, and even her birthday! But she didn't reply to all of them because she hid his inbox, so she never received any messages from him."
Miku shifted her tone into confusion. "What? What's a 'hide'? Does that even exist?"
Luka explained through the call. "Yeah, that feature's been around for years. The main difference with hiding, compared to blocking, is they can still send messages to you, tag you in posts and stuff. It's why Len was able to send messages to Rin. He would be under the assumption Rin didn't block him. But then on Rin's end, she never sees anything with him."
Oliver raised a point with a question. "But why would you hide someone? Wouldn't you rather block them instead to save yourself the effort of no contact at all?"
Luka continued with a careful assumption of Rin's actions. "I guess the only catch of 'hiding' is if you don't want to have the record of blocking someone. I mean like having to explain why you're adding them as friends again, or why they can't message you while you blocked them. Rin likely did it during those messy times for the sake of not adding more petrol to the fire of drama, based on what Kai told us about their past."
Oliver spoke once again to make a statement. "Gakt and Kai mentioned Len's last message to Rin was from last month. So we can assume Len is still keen to communicate with Rin. I personally think the chances of Len starting to lose feelings for her is slim. Like, it's been years since they separated."
Miku interjected to drop her own discovery. "Speaking of, I also have another thing to tell you folks. Which might be related to what you are all saying about Len right now."
"So it happened after we all went home?" Kaito asked on behalf of everyone else.
"Yup. We were cleaning, and I played this cheesy power ballad song that was famous years ago. Rin mentioned it was released around the time she was dating Lenβ she didn't specifically mention it. I just connected the dots after she said she loved the song because she related to the lyrics."
When Miku mentioned the title of the song, Kaito hummed in affirmation. "Yeah, that song. Rin would listen to it twenty-four-seven around the same time she started dating Len. It became infuriating at one point. It was the only thing playing on her phone, in speakers."
"And that's when she actually told me she fell in love. I had to lie and say that I haven't approached you yet since I didn't know if I should comment on that. Like 'yeah I basically know you had to go through a messy break-up with your douchebag of an ex-boyfriend'. I felt it wasn't my place to even imply it." Miku replied.
She continued. "She only said that things didn't work out in the end. That she moved on and accepted that it happened. And this is where the interesting part comes. She mentioned, and I repeat, 'If I were to be given a chance, I'd want to talk to them again and fix what I left behind with them'. "
Gakupo replied with realisation. "Rin does actually want that closure."
Oliver enthusiastically added. "Then this makes this whole plan of ours put on stone! They're reciprocating without knowing it!"
Miku happily replied. "Yes, Oli! That's the response I'm expecting!"
"Now speaking of that plan, have you reached out to the first person, Kai? What was their name again?" Oliver asked.
The friend in question replied. "Yup, and I was actually going to bring it up before Miks got excited with all these revelations."
Kaito chuckled. "Her name is Lily, she's one of Rin's close friends before Len and I. She was also one of the people who thought Rin and Len were for each other, that's a hint for you I guess.
"She's actually available to meet us this weekend afternoon, after she finishes a meeting with her volunteer group. It would be at that big shopping centre farther from here, if you guys don't mind the extra travel."
"Wait!" Miku spoke out loud in the call. "You mean the shopping centre near the convention centre!?"
"Yeah," Kaito answered. "Funny enough, that convention centre is where my previous school with Rin had our tenth grade graduation."
"Kaito! You can't just say that to me! They have all the best fashion stores there! Oh my god I'm seeing the pearly gates of heaven!" Miku audibly squealed. "YES! WE SHOULD MEET UP THERE WITH LILY!"
"Easy, Miks. We have to make sure all of us are available on Saturday around that time." Gakupo chuckled. "Though I myself am available at that time."
"Ditto, Gakt!" Oliver followed on.
Kaito admitted his initial worries during his conversation with his old friend. "Well, I was a bit worried for you guys when I insisted to Lily we should go to her place just so she doesn't have to travel far for us. She doesn't live in our area anymore after we finished tenth grade. Now she lives on the other side of the city."
Oliver replied on behalf of their group. "Nah, don't sweat it too much. We're all willing to travel, especially Miks here. And think of it, we could enjoy the trip there!"
"Good thing to know most of us can make it. I'll give her a message that we can go through." Kaito assured his friends.
Miku commanded her hesitant friend. "You're being suspiciously quiet, Lu. Whether you like it or not, you'll join me on Saturday and help me in every store we go to."
"I think it's too late for me to back away from this anyway." Luka merely sighed. But she thought that the whole idea of going to that shopping centre was going to be awesome.
She and Miku always wanted to go there. But the plan often ended up postponed, and then entirely cancelled with conflicts on their schedule thanks to the long-distance trip. Naturally, she would not be an idiot to refuse Saturday's plans.
Gakupo asked an important question. "By the way, we're all going there together, right? I realised I don't know how to get there by public transport, and I don't really want to take a taxi. Can I drop by your house first, Kai? I also have to give back the camera I borrowed from you."
"Sure, Gakt. No worries there. And we can take the same train together if we follow the time table on each of our stations. That is, if some of you are planning to go there early." Kaito explained.
"I don't mind going there early. It gives us time to shop, stroll around or have fun before the meeting, if you're into that. Since I anticipate the talk with Lily would take up much of our time there." Oliver answered.
"Yes, Lu and I will definitely head there early to go shopping~" Miku was ecstatic. "In that case, we all can catch the same train together!"
Gakupo replied. "I can go there early too. It'd be cool to explore that place since it'll be my first time."
Kaito confirmed the next plan of action. "Then it's all settled. We'll talk about the technicalities like train timetables the day before the meet-up. I think that's it for us today. We'll just talk through some things that may pop up after this."
A series of replies in agreement, from 'yup' to 'yaas', were simultaneously said. They greeted each other good night and one by one left the call.
Oliver was the first one to 'peace out' from the call. It was soon followed by Kaito, then Luka, Gakupo, and last with Miku.
Kaito rubbed his right eye and took a glance at the clock on his phone. It was in the middle of the evening but not that far in the night for bedtime.
He sent Lily a message to confirm the time they would meet up on Saturday. Kaito did a few re-writes of his notes from class, just for the sake of being productive. It took him twenty minutes before he finished.
After a few scrolls on his social media, Kaito decided to continue reading his book. He read on his seat; knees in front of his chest as his feet rested on the edge of the chair's cushion.
His phone on the table vibrated with a single ping for a message sent to him. Kaito put down his book to check it and saw Rin's name on the banner. It merely said that she shared a link, so Kaito unlocked his phone and opened his inbox.

Kaito referred to a show he and Rin bonded over since seventh grade. Len also watched the show during the early years of their friendship, for the sake of understanding what his two friends gushed over.
But he ended up not liking the show ("It's not really for me," Len would simply shrug).
So it was a thing between Kaito and Rin.

Rin: Shush, you! I just want to put this under the belt so I wouldn't think of it on the following days. Besides, it's easier than I expected.
Kaito: Ofc it would be, you tend to underestimate yourself or overthink things much lol
Rin: Better to be careful than sorry, I have a certain academic standing to maintain :/
Kaito: You're already a superstar in our class, Rin! You should give yourself a break once in a while :) You deserve it!
Rin: I am! I swear. And speaking of break, this is what I actually did when I procrastinated a while ago. I went to our old class group chat and read back from a random time around ninth grade. And look at these
Rin: sent 4 photos

.
Kaito opened each image and understood the context. It was one of those occasions where Rin indirectly roasted Len after he asked a question, or made a comment on the current topic in the chat.
There were times she did it on purpose. But it was often an accident and she had not thought it would be interpreted that way. Most of the photos had people laugh or be amused by the ex-lovers' interactions.
The following replies would be flooded with multiple laughing emojis, a laughing reaction on Rin's messages and long chains of 'HAHAHA' as their single message.
Kaito was usually one of them who would laugh first. Len often ended up not viewing the reception of his awkward interactions with Rin.

Kaito opened the single photo Rin just sent. It was a different group chat with a specific name: 'π¦ Citrus-flavoured Banana Split π π π¦'.
The group icon had a selfie picture with three people: two blondes and a blue-haired. It was Kaito, Rin, and Len's group chat before its end on the day of the break-up.

Rin: You can say, it's another anniversary since the last good message on this old group chat of ours.
.

The chat in the image obviously had a continuation. Yet it was cut off at the bottom to hide the contents that made sense to Rin's message.
It was true from Kaito's memory the very latest messages in that group chat were Rin and Len's passive-aggressive arguments after the break-up. Kaito always had to intervene.
One vivid memory of Kaito with the group chat was his indirect call out of how he missed them, and his one wish was for his two friends to stop arguing.
The former couple had not replied to the message. But Rin reached out through private message and apologised for getting him in the middle of what should only be her and Len's fight.
Kaito analysed the image. It felt weird to see the joyful name of that group chat, a combination of all three of their favourite foods (banana split had bananas for Len and ice cream for Kaito. 'Citrus-flavoured' came from Rin's love for oranges). It was their ultimate inside joke shared between them.
A slight pang in his chest came after Kaito dwelled on the memory of those good old days.
He saw they had their current profile photos in the chat. But their messaging language obviously improved through the years.

Ugh pls no flirting Len

Yeah we should, even if I know oranges will never fit in banana split

Rin: Ofc Lenny we can go on that day! Anything for you, cutie
Kaito Fuuga

Kaito Fuuga
You two are just insufferable. I don't know why I still hang out with you :/

Len Kagamine

.
.
.
A tight feeling from his chest surged in Kaito again.
There were a few days of inactivity after that conversation. Though it was understandable with them spending a well-deserved break during the school holidays.
It was the last time the three of them had a pleasant conversation.
The silence on that group chat was broken by Rin who sent an aggressive message meant for Len in retaliation for the break-up. Kaito could not remember the exact words she used, whether he consciously wanted to forget it or lost with the passage of time.
.
.
.
To this day, Kaito still loves both of his best friends.
He appreciated that, unlike other couples, Len and Rin never let Kaito felt he was the third wheel when they were together.
He still missed Rin and Len together as a pair, regardless of romantic intention.
He was willing to do things if it meant getting back to the time he could laugh alongside Rin and Len, without any fake pleasantries from either of them for the sake of being civil.
It was the pushing factor for him to agree with Miku's plan.

Kaito: Wow, that actually happened on this date. That's insane! I still wonder what banana split with oranges would actually taste like.
Rin: I don't want to think of it. I know it would taste bad asf lol
Kaito: But fr I lowkey miss those days where things just seemed so simple.
Kaito: Do you think Len is alright today?
Rin: Tbh, idk... Sometimes, I do ask myself that. But then I just end up thinking that I can't be bothered.
Rin: I know he's not part of my life anymore. He's just part of my past so I don't really want to dig into that with how many things I have to do right now in the present.
Rin: There's this feeling inside me that compels me to reach out? But then is he willing to welcome that? I don't think so. So I think it's better to just leave it as is. :/
Kaito: Aww⦠:( But you won't know if you won't try though! I think he wouldn't mind you reaching out :)
Rin: I don't knowβ¦. I don't want to be too hopeful, Kai. It's been so long. I feel like it's too late.
Rin: But anyway, I'm not particularly upset with anything from the past. And I'm willing to admit my faults, whatever they were for him. But if that doesn't arrive, oh well it's not much of a loss for me. I've already moved on and it's been years.
Kaito: I still think a closure can happen. If it's meant to happen, it will happen.
Rin: Lol Miku literally just said that exact phrase a while ago. Big psychic moment
Rin: But for sure. As they say, que sera, sera.
Kaito: Do you ever feel you missed the time you two were together?
Rin: Well, it's a bit complicated to explain. I don't really miss Len, who he was and whoever he is today.
Rin: But I did miss the feeling sometimes whenever I put down the romance novel I read. But maybe this is just me being single and having too much time in my hands? I don't really throw myself in the dating pool Kai so who knows maybe I'm just bluffing myself
Kaito: It's okay to not consider it for now. We all have priorities and I can see for you is finishing this year.
Rin: Damn right because I'm so close to screaming I want this busy period to end π Can we have rehearsals for graduation again this time? I loved that time, it was so chill and relaxing. Only downside was it meant the actual end of everything.
Kaito: Yeah same. Honestly idk how would I feel if we won't see our friends after graduation π I know we'll hang out outside uni and stuff. But it's just so scary how we got along so much for just 2 years?
Rin: You're saying that as if you and I didn't get along for the first 2 years?
Kaito: But that was different! We were both adjusting since everything was new around seventh grade. This time in eleventh and twelfth grade, these people grew up with each other while we were basically the latecomers. So you know it's a little bit harder to make friends with everyone being so established already.
Rin: Well, that's why I'm thankful we're still together at CFH! It's honestly a better experience with you being around :)
Kaito: Now you're being too sweet for me, lol don't take all the credit! You got along with everyone just fine. It's so scary to think of your power
Rin: What? Me being powerful? Please hahahaha I barely talk to anyone besides our group.
Rin: Anyways I have to head off now Kai! I have to fix my sleep schedule if I want to stop this headache from coming x_x
Rin: Good night and see you tomorrow!
Kaito: Night, night Rin!

Shortly after, Kaito began his bed time routine. He brushed his teeth, washed his face, prepared his school uniform, and organised his school bag. He laid down on his bed and wrapped himself with the thick blanket.
Before sleep took hold of him, he thought of how things would actually start to get serious from what once sounded like joke said by Miku to reunite Rin and Len.
But now Lily agreed, all of them were willing to set aside time on the weekend to take the train towards the other side of the city.
To make this plan closer to reality.
Kaito hoped Rin would never have an idea about all of this.
A single thought came through him as his heavy eyes slowly blinked, and Kaito welcomed the unconscious embrace of sleep.

May their efforts be worth it.
