Ellie Pov

Here I am in this fucking holding cell waiting to get proded by doctors and scientists for a cure. Only nearly nine years later than I thought it would be. I hate that I didn't get a chance to say goodbye to Dina. She will hate me for that, probably never forgive me for leaving her but If I had told her where I was going and what I was doing she probably would have dragged me back to Jackson kicking and screaming. I wouldn't want to witness the interaction between her and Abby either, that's if Abby keeps her promise and does find Dina for me. Then there was JJ, the thought of never seeing him grow up, becoming the man I know he will be, just like his father. What I would do to see them both one last time but I know that's impossible now. Then there's Tommy and Maria, the last people in this world I would class as family. I have to think straight and remember why I am doing this. A cure is important, it will stop so many people suffering. Stop this cycle of violence that is suffocating me and my family.

"My family" I sigh

I lean back against the cold brick wall of the white room I've been waiting in, it seems like I've been here hours. Clearly no rush to cut open the immune girl I guess. I hate waiting around especially like this, knowing my life will soon come to an end. With that thought the room around me suddenly started to glow red followed by loud sirens.

"What the fuck" I stood up and looked through the small window that was in the door, I pushed my face against it trying to get a look at the outside. I could see soldiers running around frantically gathering their equipment and guns. Something is happening and I don't like the look of it. I started banging on the window trying to get someone's attention but everyone passing carried on as if they couldn't hear me. "Hey! What the fucks going on!" I shouted

That's when I heard a loud bang followed by gun fire, I jumped back from the door in shock. What the fuck is going on, has Dina found me? Are these guys under attack and now I'm in the middle of it? Whatever is going on I know I need to get out of here. I'm a sitting duck stuck in here with no weapons. I tried the door but it's no use its locked. I throw my shoulder against it trying to break it down, I wince in pain and hold my arm, my shoulder still hasn't healed from the knife wound Abby gave me.

I scan the room for anything to help assist with my escape plan but there isn't anything in here. It's just four walls and a blanket thrown in the corner. "Great" I huffed feeling defeated. A loud banging on the door behind startled me, I spun round to see what was going on. In the small square window I could see a face looking though. It was Abby.

The fuck?

She banged on the door and signalled to get back. I moved to the corner of the room crouching down, I heard a small ticking noise then the door popped off its hinges, allowing Abby and Lev to enter, both were covered in blood and looked out of breath

"What the fucks going on?" I asked

"We are getting you out of here!" Abby spoke taking a step towards me "Here" she held out a pistol for me to take

"What about the cure?" I asked taking the gun from her hand

"There is no cure, they are going to just experiment on you. They aren't even sure they can make one" Abby moved back towards the door where Lev was standing, glancing left and right.

"Wait what do you mean?" I was shocked, I was so sure this was it. This was finally the time for me to complete my life's meaning

"We don't have time for this Ellie, we need to get out of here before the building is up in flames"

I couldn't move, I was stuck the spot I was standing in tying to work out what the fuck was going on.

"Come on!" Abby shouted putting a firm grip around my bicep and pulling me towards the door "Let's get you back to your family"

We made our way along the corridor, the sound of gunfire and the alarms echoing around making it difficult to tell where anything was coming from. Abby led the way followed by Lev and I brought up the rear, I had a firm grip of the pistol in my hand ready to shoot.

"Looks like the prisoners have got ahold of the guns and are fighting the soldiers" Lev spoke calmly

"Yeah, let's not get involved anymore than we need to. We have done our part" Abby replied

A group of soldiers came from one of the side doors, Abby dived at the first one pinning him to the ground and punching him in the face repeatedly. A flash of her doing the same thing to me in the treater came to me but I quickly shook it off, raising my pistol and shooting one of the other men. Lev took out another in the same way. The last one dropped his gun and put his hands up

"I surrender!" he shouted "don't kill me"

Abby snapped the man's neck who she had been laying into and stood up in front of the one shivering like a small child. She looked him over for a moment before shooting him in the head, his body dropped to the floor in a heep. She stepped over him and made her way along the long corridor

"Come on!" she ordered

The three of us headed towards the staircases but the doorway had collapsed making it impossible to get through. Black smoke was seeping through the cracks and it was starting to get hot in here. Ceiling tiles were cracking and falling from above us. Abby was right, it was only a matter of time before the fire engulfed the building.

"What now?" Lev asked

Abby moved to the elevator door, sticking her fingers into the gap between and prying open the doors with her bare hands, her muscles flexed, showing her strength pulling the doors open. She looked down the shaft checking it was clear.

'`Lets climb down a level" she threw her rifle onto her back and edged out onto the narrow ledge leading to the ladders, she started to descend to the next floor quickly, Lev right behind her.

I peered over the ledge and I felt a lump in my throat as I looked down at the black hole beneath me, no end in sight, one slip and that was it. I followed them onto the thin ledge and made my way to the ladder, descending to the floor beneath and back through the doors onto a new floor. Abby was standing with her hands against the wall, Lev had his hand on her back.

"You good?" I asked looking both ways down the corridor

"Yeah… fucking hate hights" she spoke breathlessly

Gun fire echoed from down the corridor, followed by the sound of heavy boots approaching us. Soldiers came from both sides cornering us. I tried the door closest to us, locked.

Fuck

I threw my shoulder against it trying to get it open but it was no use.

"Move '' Abby ordered, pushing me out of the way. She took a couple of steps back and launched her body into it causing it to fly open with force "quick through here!"

We followed her into the adjacent room firing shots at the approaching soldiers before barricading the door. I looked around the room. It looked to be an operating room with lots of different medical equipment. The wall next to me had X-rays pinned up, I walked over and inspected them, they were my brain scans. It clearly showed what I thought. That the mutation was in there, it was wrapped around my brain. I raised my hand to my head as if I would be able to feel it.

"Forget about that" Abby's was now next to me looking over the scans "that's in the past now, we need find a way out of here"

"I think these rooms are all connected" Lev spoke looking over a floor plan on the wall "It seems we can keep going through doors until we reach stairwell B" he ran his finger along the rooms, tracing the path.

The soldiers were now behind the door that we just barricaded, loud thuds and shouting from the other side as they tried to gain access.

"Come on let's go" Abby quickly moved to the next room, gun held high ready to take anyone out who stood in our way

I followed behind them as we moved from room to room, trying to block each door we came through as quickly as possible to slow anyone down who was coming after us.

"Through here, stairwell B should be through this door" Lev dropped his gun and pushed the door open. As he took a step into the corridor someone grabbed him

Abby rushed behind him pointing her gun towards the men, I followed next to her, ready to fight.

"Drop your guns or we will shoot the kid!" a told masked soldier ordered

I didn't move, just kept my pistol on the man ahead of me

"Ellie, drop it" Abby whispered

I looked over at her and shook my head, slowly raising one hand above my head and lowering the gun to the floor

"Now on your knees" He shouted as he readjusted his grip on Lev

"Don't hurt him!" Abby pleaded as she dropped to the ground her hands held above her head

"Hello again Abby" Charles spoke as he walked past the them both "hmm Ellie, I remember you saying you wasn't going to be a problem"

"Yeah well things change mother fucker" I spat at him

"Shame really" he pulled out a pistol from his belt and fiddled with it in his hands "the thing is I can't kill you… because we need you" he stopped just in front of me "but I could shoot you in the knees I suppose, stop you from running" he smiled

"Fuck you!"

He raised his gun to my head resting the cold metal to my skin for a moment before hitting me on the side of the face

"fuck" I winced

"Now, what to do with you?" his attention now on Abby

"Just let Lev go, I'll do whatever you want" she pleaded, her face looking desperate. Something I'd never really seen before.

"Sorry, no can do I'm afraid…. We have lost most of our subjects, laboratory equipment, even a few scientists since your little change of heart. We need you both"

"No!" Abby screamed launching herself at him in one last desperate attempt to do something, she tackled him to the ground and he let of a stray bullet into the ceiling, Abby punched him in the face breaking his glasses

"Abby!" Lev screamed

Her attention was now on the young boy knelt down in front of the masked soldier, his gun resting on the temple of his head.

"No!" Abby begged stepping off of Charles

A loud gunshot echoed through the corridor making everyone jump out of there skin "stop!" I roared holding the pistol above me "Anyone else moves and I shoot" I lowered the gun and rested it to my temple "let them both go" I spoke calmly

"What are you doing!" Abby whispered

"They need me alive, no good if I'm dead is it? So let them go or I will shoot"

"Do what she says" Charles ordered

"But sir!"

"No buts let the fucking kid go" he hissed

The soldier lowered his gun and Lev scrambled to his feet running to Abby's side, she took a step in front of him and looked at me, not sure what to do.

"Go" I ordered "fucking go!"

Abby moved backwards towards the staircase dragging Lev with her.

"Ellie!" the voice of Dina shouted from behind me

I whipped my head around, the gun still pointing at my head "Dina?" Dina and Tommy were standing in the doorway blocking Abby and Lev from leaving

The next few moments seemed to move in slow motion, Lev took the gun from Abbys belt and raised it towards me "move!" he shouted. I looked back around and Charls was on his feet, anger in his eyes as he lifted his gun, his finger on the trigger pulling it back. The bullet released from the chamber, It was going straight for Lev who had moved in front of Abby.

"No!" I shouted, taking a step to the side, my body went hot and I dropped to my knees with a thud, my hand reaching to my chest. I looked down and saw blood seeping through my shirt and onto my hands. The sounds around me were muffled, everything sounded the same, I couldn't make out who was talking what was happening. My head spinning as I tried to focus on the face now in front of me.

"Dina" I whispered trying to make out her features

I could see her mouth moving but I couldn't make out the words. Her eyes were looking at me but they were streaming with tears, I wanted to wipe them away, tell her it was going to be okay but I couldn't find the strength, I felt like I was fading back into the darkness, the same darkness I felt in that dream, the darkness I felt in the beach house, but this time nobody could pull me back out of it. I took one last look into the brown eyes of the woman I loved more than anything in this world before everything finally went black.
