As if in the blink of an eye, it was now finally time to celebrate Keiko's first birthday, and how! The Warden had been anticipating this very day for months. In fact, he'd anticipated this special day since before Eddie and Suki had even brought her home from the hospital. While Eddie and Suki hadn't been that zealous about their daughter's first birthday and how to best celebrate it, nevertheless they were eager to celebrate it. After all, Keiko could only be a year old once.
So the Warden family decided to go all out with Keiko's birthday party. Warden in particular wanted the whole thing to be as over-the-top as possible, with blood and gore and just about everything imaginable. He wanted everything about Keiko's first birthday to scream out the essence of Superjail. The Mistress, however, wanted her husband to tone a few things down. This was, after all, their granddaughter's birthday party, not his own. Still, it couldn't hurt to try to be at least somewhat festive here, especially since Keiko's birthday was on Halloween.
They invited as many people as they could. Ethan, Xenobia, and their two-month-old daughter Europa were invited so Keiko could meet her new cousin in person; and the rest of Superjail decided to come with to provide protection for the new family. Maddie and the rest of Ultraprison had been invited as well so they could help celebrate in style, including the newest inmates (some of which included Bilqiis and her female Somali pirate henchmen in their rankings). Dorian and Junko (now in a full-blown relationship instead of just hooking up) were also there to celebrate their mutual great-granddaughter's birthday. The Warden family's punky housemates, their old comrades from Superjail and Ultraprison, Alice's mother Norah and brother Kirby, Bruce's girlfriend Kahele (who was also Mariah's mother), and even Miss Delilah and her daughter Genie were among the guests as well.
Keiko was in for a treat on her first birthday. Her family had been planning this special day for weeks and had lined up a variety of fun activities. From the decorations to the food, they had thought of everything to make this celebration truly memorable. All in all, it was shaping up to be a great birthday party for Keiko!
The Mistress carried the cake out carefully and set it down on the dining room table. Written in icing were the words: "Happy 1st birthday, Keiko!" It had little purple swirls all about the front and it had a candle in the shape of a 1 that was rainbow-colored.
"This is so cute," Kahele said as she examined the candle more carefully. "It reminds me of Mariah's first birthday."
"Thank you," Warden replied politely. "I picked it out myself. I really like how it looks."
"Me too. Seems like you really thought of everything."
"Well, Mistress planned most of it out."
Kahele looked around her surroundings. "I can definitely see that. You should be very lucky to have her as your wife."
"Thank you. I already tell myself twice a day how lucky I am to be her husband. Alright, now who wants some cake and ice cream? We got tres leches cake, both in regular size and in smash cake size."
Everyone proceeded to do so. Meanwhile, Suki lifted Keiko up out of her crib and carried her all the way over to her high chair. At this point, Keiko was big enough that Suki could easily notice how heavy she was, so she sometimes struggled with holding her in her arms for a while. She watched Junko pour some tea for herself and Dorian, clearly basking in the moment they were sharing together. As weird as it was for them to even be a couple in the first place, she at least tried to be happy for them. After all, who was to say how much time they had left?
Suki then started opening presents for Keiko, which had been brought out by her side of the family. There was an elaborate picture book that Arisu and Chiharu had made by hand while they were staying at Superjail (Suki had a good feeling that her daughter would love this), a carved wooden horse with Warden's face painted on it, a stuffed animal that looked like a hand-made cat, and about thirty books about dinosaurs that ran the gamut from reading picture books to novels. Suki initially tried to hide her shock at how many there were, but she couldn't fight back tears as she took them all into her arms.
"I can't believe you're already a whole year old, Keiko," Eddie said. "You're already saying things that Mom would've washed my mouth out for." He then proceeded to snicker at this.
"Somehow, I'm not surprised," Mistress said. "Like father, like daughter, I suppose."
"For sure," Warden added. "Anyway, how's everyone liking the party?"
"Pretty good," Kahele replied. "Part of me wishes you could get booze at these things, but I know that would be a terrible idea."
"Isn't it always?"
Meanwhile, Keiko grabbed a handful of cake and shoved it in her mouth. She smeared the icing across her face. Mistress bent and tried to wipe her face, but Keiko turned away.
"No!" Keiko yelled.
"She's getting good at this," Mistress said. "A little too good at that word, perhaps."
"She's just hungry, that's all," Warden said. "I don't blame her. I get cranky when I'm hungry, too."
Mistress amusingly shook her head. "Oh, Warden. I can definitely see where she gets it from."
The party went on with no issues whatsoever. In the meantime, Mistress decided to head off to the bathroom while everyone else carried on.
"Will you be okay for a minute, Mistress?" Warden asked her.
"Of course!" Mistress assured him. "Don't worry about me, just look after the guests! I'll be back soon enough!"
"Alright, but hurry back. I don't want you to miss anything too festive."
"Alright, I won't."
With that, Mistress disappeared off into the bathroom and decided to reflect alone with her thoughts. Everything that had happened within the past year had been equal parts exciting and stressful, but ultimately exhilarating. If she had a time machine, she would've happily gone back and done it all over again. Sure, some things hadn't turned out exactly like she'd planned, but it was best not to dwell too much on stuff like that. Once she was done using the bathroom, she headed back to the party to see how things were going.
"Hello, darling." Warden didn't even have to look up to know it was her. He knew that clicking heel sound anywhere. "How was the bathroom?"
"Same as it always was." She gave him a quick peck on the cheeks. "Where's Keiko? Did you hand her off to Jailbot or Nova?"
"What do you mean? She's right over..." Warden pointed towards the high chair where Keiko had been sitting a moment ago. "...there." His heart suddenly dropped into his stomach when he saw that they were missing. "Oh no... no, no, no, no, no. This can't be happening right now..."
Mistress sighed. "You had one job, Warden. One job. I mean, for God's sake, how blind and deaf could you possibly be to not notice our granddaughter disappearing? For all we know, she might have been abducted or, worse, killed."
Warden gave with an uneasy laugh. "Don't worry, honey. We'll find her. Let's go!"
And so they decided to search every nook and cranny for their granddaughter. They ran everywhere they knew she liked to hide out in, even in places no normal baby would ever reach. When their search proved to be unsuccessful, they gave up and headed back towards the party.
"Our best option at this moment is to report her missing and recruit search teams," Warden told his very pissed off wife. "Hopefully, she'll still be alive when we find her."
"I hope so, because I swear to God..." Mistress started speaking. "If she turns up dead, I'm never going to- huh?"
She was interrupted by a melee of screaming Superjail and Ultraprison inmates that was unfurling before her very eyes. A whole bunch of them were rioting, punching, stomping, strangling, and clawing one another while Jailbot, Nova, Shiva, Prometheus, Eris, Guabancex, Alice, Bruce, Kendra, Ziggy, Clint, and Mariah all did their best to subdue them. Meanwhile, Victory was in the midst of a panic attack, and Jared and Charise were trying to calm her down. And the one who instigated the whole thing? A one-year-old who was currently toddling around, violently attacking anyone she could get her hands on. In an attempt to protect Keiko, Ethan was wildly stabbing and skewering some of the inmates with his cane while Eddie was clawing out the eyes of one inmate and Maddie was using her cattle prod on other inmates. While all this was going on, Xenobia just stood on the sidelines while holding Europa, who was was laughing like a maniac at all the chaos unfurling before her.
"Oh my GOD!" Mistress started to rush forward before Warden held up his arm and stopped her. "Warden, what are you doing?"
"Hold on a second..." Warden just said. "Before you do anything rash, tell me: who does Keiko remind you of the most?"
Mistress took another look at her oldest granddaughter, watching as she attacked and killed inmates. Then she realized something: Keiko was basically her when she was younger!
"My God..." Mistress finally spoke quietly. "She's just like me. She always has been."
"Exactly. You know what this means, don't you?"
Mistress looked up to see Warden looking on with watery eyes. "We're good grandparents?"
"We're good grandparents... we're good grandparents!"
Mistress squealed in delight while Warden picked her up and twirled her around.
He set her down and looked her in the eye. "I think it's time we go over there and show 'em how it's done, don't you?"
"Yes."
"Well, what are we waiting for? Lead the way!"
Mistress smirked and took Warden's hand. She led him through the crowd and up next to their children and granddaughter. Mistress brought out her riding crop and cracked it to get their attention.
"You need any help?" Mistress asked them.
"Nah, Mom!" Ethan replied quickly. "We're good! We can do this!"
"Can your father and I help anyway?"
"Ah, what the hell? I don't see why not!"
"Alright!" Eddie exclaimed. "This is going to be fun!"
So they all attacked like the family they were meant to be.
