Robert wanted nothing more than to stay in the warmth of Anna's bed and arms the next morning, but they both still wanted to keep their reunion secret from Robin.
He had to sneak back into Robin's house.
Robert figured it'd be easy enough; he had a key and the lock pick kit as backup. But as soon as the door cracked open, he realized his mistake. The sharp wailing of sirens immediately pierced his ears, making him go momentarily deaf.
"Shit!" Robert hissed, staring down blankly at the security system's keypad by the front door. "Shit, shit!"
There was a rapid pounding of feet coming down the stairs before his daughter appeared in her pajamas. She quickly hit the correct combination of numbers on the keypad to silence the screeching alarm.
"Dad!"
"Sorry about that, honey."
"Where the hell have you been?! It's still dark outside."
"Oh, uh… Just out for a little morning jog."
"Mom! Is everything okay down there?" Emma's voice yelled from upstairs.
"Yes, Grandpa just set off the alarm." Robin called back.
She eyed Robert up and down suspiciously as he walked to her kitchen, noting that he was wearing the same clothes as the night before, only they were rumpled.
Robert feigned fanning himself with his shirt, pulling it from the front and flapping it in and out to move air. He went to pour himself a glass of water to add to the effect. "I like to get out there early."
"Of course." Robin smirked. "But you didn't set off the security system on the way out of the house."
"Huh, weird." Robert gulped down the water. "You should probably get that checked out."
"You know, you didn't have to go jogging in yesterday's slacks and loafers." Robin perched on the edge of a barstool at her kitchen counter. "I'm sure we could have found you something."
"Well, I didn't want to trouble you."
Robin shook her head. "You're losing your touch, Scorpio."
"I beg your pardon?!"
Robin clicked her tongue at him in disappointment. "Doing the walk of shame into your own daughter's house."
"The walk of what?"
"Shame. Coming back from a booty call in the previous night's clothes." Robin gestured vaguely at his wrinkled attire.
"Booty call?!"
"I know you know what a booty call is."
"You shouldn't speak to your father like that." His mouth was suddenly dry. He put his glass back under the faucet.
"The only thing that surprises me is that it took this long for it to happen." Robin leaned her chin on her hand on the kitchen counter, waiting. "Bet you wish you had a cyanide pill right about now."
"Fine. It's been going on for weeks." Robert confessed.
"Like I said, you've lost your touch, old man." Robin was amused. "That was way too easy."
"Robin…"
"That's why you and Mom showed up on my doorstep together… Why you didn't mind sharing a bed when you were here… Why I found you all locked in an embrace the next morning…"
"Yes, but it's far from a 'booty call.'" Robert said firmly. "We have real feelings for each other."
"As you always have."
"And always will."
Robin walked over to the coffee pot, knowing she was never going to be able to go back to sleep. She shoveled coffee into the filter. "Well, I can't tell you how much I appreciate you both finding Emma, even though she's grounded until the next century for running off to meet my brother."
Robert studied her. "You don't sound all that shocked about having a brother."
"After living the life I have? The lives we all have?" Robin shook her head with a laugh. "Not really. It already happened before, remember?"
"Oh, God. Don't remind me about your cousin."
"Sorry. What happens now?"
"Your mother and I are meeting with him today."
Robin grabbed a loaf of bread to make them both some breakfast. "And how do you feel about that?"
"I didn't think psychiatry was your specialty." Robert scoffed.
"You have to have some feelings about this." Robin's voice softened.
"Your mother doesn't remember being pregnant with him other than maybe being sick on the boat."
"Yeah, Emma told me that part." Robin put four pieces of bread in the toaster.
"Anna's a wreck because she can't remember."
"But I asked about you."
"I guess I came down a little hard on your mother. But she kept this possibility a secret from me, and well… I always wanted another child with her."
"Did she know that?"
"We talked about it when we got married again. We weren't exactly trying not to get pregnant before she was kidnapped."
Robin held a hand up. "Okay, got it."
"I guess I'm in shock. Suddenly, I've found out I have a thirty-year-old son. I have no idea where he's been for thirty years. I've missed his childhood. I feel like if Anna had told me, I would have found him or died trying. I'm just so angry about everything Cesar Faison has taken from our family. Even dead, he continues to destroy us."
Robin reflected on her father's words as she buttered toast for them. She laid down the knife and sighed, making eye contact with her father. "You can't change the past, Dad, but our future could include Alessandro. Harboring resentment for Mom is just going to ruin your last chance at happiness with her, and then Faison wins again."
"You're right." Robert murmured.
Robin set two pieces of toast in front of him and went to pour him a cup of coffee. "Whatever you do, don't shut Mom out. Just get to know him and work through this together."
Robert nodded, taking a bite out of his toast. "Okay."
The doorbell rang an hour later, and Robin opened the door to reveal her mother standing there. Anna pulled her into a brief hug.
"Is your father here? Our Uber is waiting."
"I think he's finishing up in the shower. You know… I don't know what he was doing all night, but he just looked exhausted." Robin said, holding her mother's gaze.
Anna cleared her throat, averting her eyes. "Well, you know. A lot of emotions going on."
"Oh, I'm sure…" Robin smirked. "You know… It was so weird. He went jogging this morning in last night's clothes."
"Really? Um, well, Robert's a bit odd sometimes."
"You look so refreshed, though, Mom! I bet you really enjoyed last night."
Anna blinked a few times. "Say what?"
"Oh, you know… Being alone. Was it a five star hotel?"
"Ah, yes, it was quite nice." Why did it feel like Robin was questioning her?
Robert came down the stairs, smelling freshly of soap and wearing a pressed set of clean clothes. Smiling when he saw her, Robert drew Anna in for a kiss on the lips.
Anna yanked back quickly, shooting a panicked look at Robin. "Robert! What are you…"
"Sorry." Robert shrugged. "Couldn't hold out. She's inherited your interrogation skills, Luv."
"It doesn't require a lot of 'interrogation' to figure out the obvious." Robin said with a satisfied smile.
"You two…"
Robert just smiled and kissed Anna on the cheek. He laced his fingers through hers. "You ready?"
Anna sighed and squeezed his hand. "Yes, I'm ready… Let's go meet our son."
