Hello, I am Dani! I got a review by rebecca-in-blue that inspired me to make this story about Maya much better than it was. I added many details and made sure I followed the plot. I hope you enjoy it and I am slightly considering writing a more happy version of this story. Maya's story is fascinating in the way that it is the daughter of Dudley being an orphan or in my other one, having parents that are still alive and she is magical.
I hope you enjoy this story as much as I do and I wish you all a very good day/evening/night!
I post all of my fanfiction on three accounts. One is Archiveofourown under the username FangirlWriter1!, under the username DaniMason, and on Wattpad under the name FangirlWriter. Maya was in the backseat watching her parents. It was raining hard, and it was dark out. Her dad was driving, and her Mom was resting in the passenger seat. They had just come back from the movies, and it was an enjoyable movie. Maya was drifting off, and then she felt the car jerk. She looked up in alarm, and she saw a car hitting the front of the vehicle she was in. She saw the car crumple with her parents getting mutilated.

They had just come back from the movies, and it was an enjoyable movie. Maya was drifting off, and then she felt the car jerk. She looked up in alarm, and she saw a car hitting the front of the vehicle she was in. She saw the car crumple with her parents getting mutilated.
She woke up with a start. Maya was breathing heavily, and as her vision started focusing she saw the spiders hanging from the ceiling of the cupboard under the stairs. Maya wondered how she ended up in a cupboard with the name Harry carved into the wood. She remembered waking up in the hospital room. The bright burning fluorescent lights and the blurry image of her grandparents sitting in chairs. It was not a pleasant sight, but it was slightly comforting to see her grandparents.
Maya rasped out "Where are Mom and Dad?"
Grandma said with tears choking her voice, "MissyMoo I am sorry. Your parents are dead. You are going to live with us."
Maya started crying, and her ribs burned with the effort.
In a few days, Maya came to her new home. She got her father's old room at first. It was nice to be where her father had spent his days. She was comforted by the room in a time filled with grief and turmoil. In a few days, Maya's grandma and grandpa got her into the primary school that her Dad went to.
The first few weeks were as good as they could be. Maya got to go to the funeral and saw a couple that her Grandparents seemed to hate, but Maya thought they were nice, their names were Harry and Ginny Potter. Harry had also lost his parents as a child and said he was so sorry that she was going through that pain. Then Maya went to her new school. After a few days, Maya made a few new friends. Ava and Emma. They played with their dolls and played normal recess games. Everything was good until it wasn't.
Weird things started to happen to Maya. When she brought the book Matilda home, her Grandma freaked out, tore it up, and started shredding it in the shredder.
Maya started crying " That was a library book from school, and please don't destroy it.
"You shouldn't have brought filthy magic home!"
The book came out of the shredder completely fine. No marks, or torn pages. Maya was thrilled until she saw her Grandmother's face.
"You little freak! How did you come from my son? It must be your mother's fault! Go into the cupboard!"
"What! There are probably cleaning supplies in there!"
"Don't ask questions freak, just do it!"
Maya ran to the cupboard, and there were no cleaning supplies. Instead, there was a mattress, and with further inspection, she saw a name carved into the wall. The name was HARRY POTTER.
Maya wondered why Harry Potter's name was there. He nor his parents alluded to a relationship. Maya did wonder why that Madtlia book fixed itself, but there were more important issues to think about. Eventually, Maya's Grandfather came home, and Maya thought that maybe he would end all this nonsense. That hope was brutally ended when her Grandpa yelled at her for at least twenty minutes.
Maya cried herself to sleep that night on her uncomfortable mattress. The next day Maya went to school. She spent the time after doing her homework hiding her stuff in the shed. Maya did that because her Grandma said that, she would be the only one using that shed because she would do all the yard work. Maya wanted to make sure nothing happened to her stuff.
Ava said, "Maya, is there something happening at home?"
"Ava, nothing is happening. I am just sad about my parents. I miss them."
Emma said, "I am sorry that you are sad. We are always going to be your friends though."
"Yeah! You are awesome!"
Maya said, "Thanks, guys! I will always be your friend too!"
The abuse only got worse as time went on, Maya reflected. Her Grandmother Petunia and Grandfather Vernon started yelling at her every day. It always made Maya feel so small and scared. In those moments she daydreamed of her parents secretly being in comas, and waking up one day and stealing her away. Then the brutal memories of their last moments replayed in her mind, and the daydream died a swift death. Then she would dream of a long lost relative stealing her away in the middle of the night, and getting Dairy Queen in London and eating ice cream basking in the freedom and giddiness in the crisp air.
Grandmother Petunia and Grandfather Vernon would tell her all the time that no one would believe her. They were always going on about how they had already beaten the magic out of another kid called Freak. Maya deduced that the boy's name was Harry Potter. Then she thought that her father must have seen all of it going down when he was younger. Maya could not reconcile the fact that he had allowed her to end up in her grandparent's care. Did he approve of kids getting beaten for no reason besides odd occurrences?
This leads to the day when Maya is reflecting. She came home laughing with her friends, and Emma and Ava headed home when they dropped her off. Grandmother Petunia freaked out. Her eyes were bugging out, and her face was bright tomato red.
She screeched "How dare you corrupt those poor girls with your freakiness!"
She marched to the drawer with the matches and lit it, and put it against Maya's arm while holding her arm in place. Maya had tears streaming down her face while she was choking back on her tears. Over the weekend her Grandfather Vernon and Grandmother Petunia continued to abuse her verbally and physically. They would burn her and beat her with a belt.
They would screech, "We will beat the magic out of you!"
Maya was scared and started to become a shell of herself. Emma and Ava were starting to be worried about her. Her teacher Miss Smith was worried when she saw that Maya was wearing long sleeves when she didn't before. Some of the teachers were friends with the Dursleys, and those teachers thought that Maya was a delinquent. Maya's teacher was very concerned though.
One day she said, "Maya, can you stay for a minute then you can go to recess."
When all the kids but Maya left the classroom Miss Smith said, "Maya. You have been acting withdrawn. Is everything good at home?"
"Yeah, everything is fine. I am just sad that my parents are dead."
Miss Smith left are report with the authorities. They started to investigate, and they interviewed the Dursleys. They got so mad at Maya for telling, and not listening to her pleas that she said nothing and always kept her injuries hidden. They didn't believe her and only hit her harder.
"Please stop! I told no one! They believe you!"
Her accidental magic exploded and made a huge boom as her Grandparents were tied up with a rope. Maya ran into her cupboard frightened. Then after a few minutes, Maya heard the front door slam open, and she heard footsteps heading toward the cupboard. Then she heard a knock.
"Is anyone in there? This is the police"
"I am."
"Please come out. You are safe now."
Maya came out and she saw Harry Potter. She started crying harder and said, "Are you the Harry Potter in the cupboard?"
Harry said "Yes. I am so sorry that this happened to you."
"Are you related to me?"
"Yes. Your dad was my cousin. You can just call me Harry. My partner Sullivan is interviewing the Durlseys. I am going to take you to St Mungo's the wizard hospital since you are showing signs of being a witch. Yes, magic exists and your grandparents hate it. We magical beings have a separate world to live in so we don't expose the magical world. I will explain more once you are calm down if that is okay with you?"
"Okay, all that is okay with me. Please take me away. Please take me to get my stuff out of the shed."
"Ok, Maya."
Harry and Maya walked to the shed, Maya got her stuff and Harry shrunk it for her.
Harry held out his hand to Maya and when she took it "I am going to apparate. It will be very uncomfortable, but it will get us to St Mungo's fast."
"Okay."
They both made it to St Mungo's, and Maya threw up Harry held her hair back and apologized to her. She then got checked out and got pictures taken of her injuries. Maya was interviewed by Harry and she told her long story. The next day Harry and Ginny took her to their home with all their children and Maya loved being there. Maya loved the brooms and all the love in the air. The feeling was almost like being back home with her parents.
They got a trial running, and Maya didn't have to attend due to wizarding laws, her interview, and the memories. Maya was very grateful for that. Due to Harry and Ginny and all their kids having Muggle identities, they easily adopted Maya. She was now Dursley-Potter, though she went by Dursley. Maya asked Harry why he still liked the Muggle world after all that the Dursleys did to him.
"Maya, the muggle world is not just bigots. The wizarding world isn't all good people. I got raised like a pig for slaughter to defeat a dark lord. My godfather said, "We've all got both light and dark inside us. What matters is the part we choose to act on, that's who we really are." Muggles and Wizards are alike in the sense that we are all good and bad. It took many years to heal enough to step into the muggle world again. Plus, no one knows me there."
