In the next few days I would learn a lot about my new pokémon. I would find out his ups and his downsides, and his personality traits on top of that. I discovered that while he was very quick and agile, he lacked the strength to back it up and often struggled to take down opponents whom he didn't have the advantage over. He made quick work of the geodude in the area, and was able to kill the rattatta with one stomp to the spine. He was brutal, very much so in fact, but he was not necessarily cruel.
Jackal's brightness was also a plus. He would follow and learn most commands without much effort. I chopped this up to his minor psychic abilities that allowed him to be able to know exactly what I was trying to explain to him. He knew the commands for 'punch' and 'kick' and he was just getting around to the concept of grappling.
He was also blessed with another neat ability. Because of the fact that he was an aura based pokémon, he could focus his own aura into different parts of his body to enhance them. He could focus his aura into his feet to allow him to climb up trees; or his fists to allow him to punch harder. I also read somewhere that a very well trained lucario or riolu could focus their aura into their enemy. The overload of energy would be really bad news for their opponent.
Jackal was smart enough to avoid anything with an advantage over him. He would make sure he avoided beedrill hives or pidgey nest. I wasn't really worried about training him as much as I was worried about learning more about him. The only way I could properly gauge his strength was through a pokémon battle with an actual trainer.
I sat in wait for more than 15 minutes before another trainer walked by. I whistled for Jackal to come over, he stopped terrorizing a paras for a moment and ran over to me. I withdrew him back into his ball; if Jackal was out the trainer would've seen what type of pokémon he was and attempted to use it to his advantage. And I would be damned if Jackal lost his first battle from that.
"Hey, can you be bothered for a battle?" I proposed to the young man. He looked around my age; he had a bit of stubble on his chin, and a big gap in his teeth. He was definitely from Azalea.
"Uh, well you don't look like much…" He looked me up and down, surveying my appearance. I must've looked like a rookie trainer based on how clean my clothes were. I considered myself pretty decent for a greenhorn.
"I'll go one-on-one, no items." I laid the rules down on the table. He pondered them for a moment and nodded his head.
"Okay then, I'm ready when you are, novice." He insulted, smirked and revealed his fucked up teeth.
"Alright then, just so you know, I can see down your throat through your horse mouth, fucking hick." I retorted, he gasped and covered his mouth with his hand. He used his other hand to unhook his pokeball from his belt. He threw the ball down, releasing a familiar brown toad Jackal had defeated so many times before.
The geodude species had no hind legs, but its arms were plenty strong enough to make up for it. It looked like an odd rock from a distance, but with closer inspection it was actually a toad. I knew Jackal had that battle in the bag as soon as he released his pokémon.
"Stone, grab him if he gets close." Stone that guy's creativity was on point. The geodude disobeyed its trainers order and hopped over to Jackal using its forelegs. Jackal kicked his foot at the geodude, but only managed to hit air. The geodude grabbed Jackal's leg and punched it with its free arm.
Jackal winced and attempted to shake the rocky toad off of himself. "Don't struggle; just tear its arm off!" I ordered. Jackal took my words very very literally, he grabbed one of the geodudes appendages, it started glowing a deep blue, and he ripped it off like paper.
"NO, STONE!" The trainer yelled, but the geodude just kept going on normally.
"Jackal! I meant get him off of you, not literally tear his arm off!" I scolded the blue fighter; he just glared daggers at me. He blasted the geodude with a burst of aura, sending it flying backward in front of its trainer. It croaked once and lost consciousness. The geodude would be fine; its species could regrow limbs over the course of a few weeks. The trainer was simply overreacting; you would think he would have known a little more about his own pokémon's species.
The gapped-tooth young man ran the opposite direction. Either he forgot about the prize money he was supposed to give me, or he was too spiteful to give it to me. I yelled for him to give me my money, but he ignored me and kept running.
Either way, I had a little bit of pride in my heart for Jackal. He easily won his first battle and I couldn't be mad at him. But had I known that it would've gotten a lot worse from there, I would've stopped him before it was too late.
