Disclaimer: (Which I've been forgetting) I'm definitely NOT Veronica Roth, and I do not own the songs I've used in this chapter. They are sung by The Script and Paramore. :-)
Tris POV THE NIGHT OF THE CONCERT!
I can't stop shaking right now. I know that everyone says once you perform a bunch of times it gets easier, but let me tell you, for me, it never did. I've performed hundreds of shows and I still get just as nervous as the first time. Today might be even worse, I'm performing in front of my classmates. I actually like and care about the opinions of certain people here. By now they all know who I am and my entire school is here plus many other people in the town. It's a pretty big show. I asked all the girls to please help me with my makeup and they were beyond excited! I invited the entire gang to stay backstage and watch the concert with me if they wanted to. All of them said yes. I'm pretty much ready now, I'm clutching my song lyrics in my hand and running through them. I know all of them by heart, but it comforts me to know that I have them right in front of me. Of course, I'll have to put them down before I go onstage.
I am playing seven songs today. Zeke, Uriah, Will, and Tobias apparently formed a band a few years ago and they became pretty popular within our town, so they are going to open for me.
"15 minutes!" someone said. I looked around and saw Susan running up to me. She looked really nervous.
"Beatrice," she whisper-shouted.
"Yeah?" I asked.
"We've got a problem. We can't find any microphones."
"What do you mean?" I was really confused now.
"We had eight microphones to use for the show. They're all wireless. They are all missing and even the backup cord ones are gone."
"Are you serious?" I asked, thinking one of the Pedrad brothers had asked her to says something to prank me.
"Well, can't we use…" I began to rattle off a bunch of different options we had.
"Nope, whoever did this obviously knew what they were doing." I thought about it. Well, it could be one of my friends trying to prank me. I approached all of my friends and asked them. They all said sincerely that they didn't do it and they would keep their eyes peeled for any mics.
Who could it be? I thought to myself. They'd have to be familiar with the school. They'd need to have some background with performing. They'd also have to really hate me. Nita? Molly? Drew? Eric? Peter?
Peter.
Peter.
I saw Peter watching me when I walked in. He was wearing all black, which wasn't necessarily unusual, but he was whispering on the phone. Come to think of it, it was a little bit suspicious. It has to be him.
Peter had given me his phone number one of my first few days at school. I turned him down, but I think I still have his number in my phone. I had a feeling it would be useful.
"Excuse me?" I asked a girl standing to my left, with a green streak in her hair. I would later find out this was Kee. (Kee is an actual Divergent character. Christina saved her in Allegiant. She's only 8 but in this she's the same age. Let me know if you want more of her in the story. She didn't really get described in the book so I could change her to fit the story.)
"Yes… Wait? Are you Beatrice Prior? I LOVE your music!"
"Yes, I am, do you think I could possibly borrow your phone? I really need it. You could stay backstage with my friends while I perform too."
"Really? Of course! Go right ahead!" She unlocked her phone and opened the keypad. I punched in Peter's number."
"Hello?" I heard.
"Hi, Peter! This is Amanda Mayberry! Do you remember me?"
"Umm… No… Should I?" He sounded confused.
"Well, yes. We met at that party last weekend."
"Oh! Yes! I remember you!" Kee looked over at me with raised eyebrows. I guess this does sound a little bit strange.
"I was just wondering, you wouldn't happen to be at the Beatrice Prior concert, would you? It's at your school, correct?"
"Yeah, I'm here." He said, a little unsure of where this was going.
"Do you want to meet up? I'll be at the front of the school in 2 minutes."
"Suuree… I'll see you then." I hung up.
"Hey Kee, want to come with me? I've got some microphones to take back."
"Okay," she walked with me until we reached the front. There stood Peter standing against the door frame looking defensive.
"Hello, Peter! Can I please have my them back? It'd be really helpful."
"I don't know what you're talking about. I didn't take your microphones." He said casually, he shouldn't be so "casual" when he totally screwed up.
"Yes you do, I never said I was looking for the microphones. How did you know what I was looking for if you didn't take them?"
"DANG IT!" He shouted, making a few people turn around. He grudgingly handed me a bag that was sitting on the chair next to him. I checked and saw all eight microphones in it.
"Thank you! I gave him a quick (fake) smile and then ran off with Kee at my side. We ran backstage and I quickly handed Susan the microphones. I had perfect timing.
"2 minutes!" The same person as before shouted. Tobias, Zeke, Will and Uriah rushed past me.
"Good luck!" I shouted, they all shouted the same to me. I brought Christina, Shauna and Marlene to wait on the wings with me. Before I knew it, they were on stage speaking to the crowd. Uriah and Tobias were the main singers, Uriah also played the piano and Tobias was playing guitar. Will was on drums and Zeke was playing backup guitar.
"What's up?" Uriah shouted.
The crowd cheered.
"Today we're going to play a song for you that my buddy Four here wrote."
They began to play.
(Oh if you could see me now)
(Oh if you could see me now)
It was February 14 Valentine's Day
The roses came but they took you away
Tattooed on my arm is a charm to disarm all the harm
Gotta keep myself calm but the truth is you're gone
And I'll never get to show you these songs
Dad you should see the tours that I'm on
I see you standing there next to Mom
Both singing along, yeah on and on
And there are days when I'm losing my faith
Because the man wasn't good he was great
He'd say "Music was the home for your pain"
And explained I was young, he would say
Take that rage, put it on a page
Take that page to the stage
Blow the roof off the place
I'm trying to make you proud
Do everything you did
I hope you're up there with God saying "That's my kid!"
[Chorus]
I still look for your face in the crowd
Oh if you could see me now
(Oh if you could see me now)
Would you stand in disgrace or take a bow
Oh if you could see me now
(Oh if you could see me now)
(Oh if you could see me now)
If you could see me now would you recognize me?
Would you pat me on the back or would you criticize me?
Would you follow every line on my tear-stained face
Put your hand on my heart that was cold
As the day you were taken away
I know it's been a while but I can see you clear as day
Right now, I wish I could hear you say
I drink too much, and I smoke too much dutch
But if you can't see me now that shit's a must
You used to say I won't know a wind until it crossed me
Like I won't know real love 'til I've loved and I've lost it
So if you lost a sister, someone's lost a mom
And if you lost a dad then someone's lost a son
And they're all missing out, yeah they're all missing out
So if you get a second to look down on me now
Mom, Dad I'm just missing you now
I still look for your face in the crowd
Oh if you could see me now
(Oh if you could see me now)
Would you stand in disgrace or take a bow
Oh if you could see me now
(Oh if you could see me now)
Oh, oh
Would you call me a saint or a sinner?
Would you love me a loser or winner?
Oh, oh
When I see my face in the mirror
We look so alike that it makes me shiver
I still look for your face in the crowd
Oh if you could see me now
(Oh if you could see me now)
Would you stand in disgrace or take a bow
Oh if you could see me now
(Oh if you could see me now)
Yeah I'm just missing you now
I still look for your face in the crowd
Oh if you could see me now
(Oh if you could see me now)
Would you stand in disgrace or take a bow
Oh if you could see me now
(Oh if you could see me now)
If you could see, you could see me now (x2)
(I know that it's not exactly right for Tobias' situation, but I think it's gonna work. You get the gist of it.)
The crowd went wild when they finished that song. I'm gonna have to have a flawless performance to top that. Many people probably don't see or understand the meaning of Tobias' words. Maybe they just think it's about his mom, I don't know. I think that he's mentioning that he did lose his mother and he feels like he lost his father too. You could hardly call Marcus a father.
I smiled at all the guys as I walked out onstage after them. I sang my seven songs, they were a HUGE hit! My favorite of the seven was "Ain't It Fun!" It really got the crowd excited.
I called everyone backstage on to wave as they closed the curtain. Uriah and Zeke picked up Will and made a human pyramid. It was hilarious! (He fell down pretty quickly) I hi-fived everyone once the curtain went down. We grabbed two deep dish pizzas from Lou Malnati's and took it home to eat and celebrate with my family! I had so much fun. We watched a movie. Christina, Shauna, Marlene all slept over and I think all the guys went over to Uriah and Zeke's house. We had fun and talked way past midnight. I'm so lucky to have such amazing friends.
What's up guys?
Whaddya think?
What should happen next?
Should she go on tour?
Can we get to 140 reviews?
R&R,
TrisTobyUri
