CHAPTER 5

Naruto was sitting in his office with an ice pack on his nose. Nothing went wrong...aside from Gaara and the broken nose. Gaara had helped them though. He'd check with Choji later about the files. Tsunade wanted them to debrief in a few hours. Naruto refused to go to the hospital. Hospitals weren't his thing. He'd broken his nose before and he had his partner set his nose in place. He doubted that Sasuke would do it for him if he even knew how. There was a light wrap on the door.

"Yeah," Naruto called out. The door opened and Sasuke stood with his hand on the door knob.

"Tsunade's looking for us,"
"Already?" Naruto sighed.
"Yeah,"

Naruto got up and followed Sasuke to the conference room. He left his ice pack on his desk. He didn't need it.

The debriefing went smoothly. Jiraiya had given them another case but they would start tomorrow. It was about time to leave the office anyway. Sasuke saw an opportunity to change his tactics. He had to get to know Naruto to get more information. Naruto had left the conference room quickly. Sasuke jogged to catch up with him.

"Naruto!" Sasuke stopped beside the blonde.

"Yeah?" Naruto looked at him but continued to walk.

"You did well today let's get a beer later." Sasuke was going to crack a smile but he decided not to. His smiles weren't exactly winner.

"Yeah ok," Naruto gave a small smile. He was skeptical of Sasuke's seniority, but he really needed a drink.

Sai was beginning to get frustrated. He had kicked off his shoes and taken of his leather jacket. The files were right in front of him but he couldn't get into them. He could break the code each time but in a matter of minutes it would be gone. It was almost like the ANBU Agency was teasing him. He got up and stomped into the kitchen. He sat at the island and put his head down.

"Anything?" Shikamaru got up from the couch he had been lounging on.

"Get me something to drink," Sai didn't lift his head.

"I've got water, soda, and-"

"I meant like alcoholic," Sai lifted his head and let his chin rest on the island.

"No,"

Sai cursed at him and retreated back to Shikamaru's bedroom. Sai tore the first page off the notepad. He searched for the files again. He then started to download a program of his own. Trying to keep the pass code rewrite from rewriting the code was difficult. Sasuke would owe him a favor, a smirk formed on Sai's face.

It was around eight and Sasuke grabbed a taxi to his favorite bar. He told Naruto where it was. Hopefully the blonde could follow directions. His plan was classic. Get him drunk and get information. It was a while before Naruto walked through the door. He sat next to Sasuke at the bar. He was in casual clothing, dark blue jeans, and a black long sleeve shirt. He had an orange pendant necklace with a swirl in the middle. He felt himself staring at the necklace.

"My father gave it to me, I don't wear it at work," Naruto looked down at the pendant.

"Sorry.." Sasuke apologized for his staring.

"You're not the only one who stares at it," Naruto laughed.

The bartender set two beers down in front of them. Sasuke thanked her with a nod.

"So you frequent this bar?" Naruto took a sip of his beer before he sat down.

"Yup," Sasuke took a small sip from his beer. He didn't want to get too drunk. He wasn't sure what to talk about. He had nothing in common with Naruto. Maybe this is going to be harder than he thought. Hopefully Naruto would start talking so he didn't have to. There was silence between the two for a while. Naruto took another sip of his beer.

"So..." Naruto set his beer on the bar, "gland we took down Gai and the suppliers,"

"Yeah, your nose looks pretty bad though,"

"Yeah...I know. I have to get it set in place,"

"You didn't go to the hospital?"

"I usually have someone I know do it for me,"

"Oh?" Sasuke looked at Naruto with a questioning look. Maybe he'd get the story behind his cat like scars too.

"My old partner had medical skills, helped me a lot," Naruto finished his first beer and a second was put in front of him. He welcomed the second beer. He shouldn't talk about his old partner. He knew talking about him would have repercussions. He sipped from his beer.

"That's useful,"

"Yup,"

The conversation didn't last long. They were quiet for a while. Naruto started talking about sports Sasuke wasn't into sports but he played along. Naruto's favorite sport was hockey. Sasuke hated watching all sports, but he didn't voice it. Eventually a different topic would pop in. Sasuke made sure Naruto had plenty to drink. The raven was getting kind of buzzed. He was interested in some of the things Naruto was saying. He couldn't let his focus be drawn away from his goal though.

Sai was typing madly on the computer. Shikamaru watched his hands dance along the keyboard. He was like a mad pianist. He had offered Sai food but he was shot down quickly. Sai wouldn't even tell him if he had any made any progress. Suddenly the mad clicking stopped. Sai let out a laugh.

"This is impossible!" he slammed his hand on the desk, "someone is blocking me from getting in!"

"What?" Shikamaru sat himself down in the chair next to Sai.

"Someone knows I'm trying to get into the files,"

"Are you serious?" Shikamaru put a hand over his face, this was bad.

"Forget it Shikamaru this is not for me," Sai got up quickly and grabbed his things. He had never had this kind of trouble before. This was on a whole new level.

"You're just going to walk away?" Shikamaru stood up.

"Yes, I'm going home to have a fucking drink," Sai turned and left. He slammed the door on his way out.

"What a diva." Shikamaru didn't want to break the news to Sasuke. He'd wait to see if Sai would come around.

Naruto and Sasuke had been talking and laughing. They were outside now laughing about Gai's color scheme. They were both pretty drunk. Sasuke knew that Naruto had more to drink than him. He was having an ok time with the blonde. Naruto swayed a little where he stood.

"You alright?" Sasuke asked with a chuckle.

"I'm pretty drunk," Naruto slurred out.

Sasuke hailed a cab and they both got in. Sasuke told the driver his address.

"You can crash at my place I guess," Sasuke didn't look at the blonde.

"Cool thanks,"

Sasuke's phone buzzed and he pulled it out. It was from Shikamaru.

Shikamaru : Sai walked out.

Sasuke closed his phone. Sai was stubborn he'd have to convince him to continue. Hopefully Sasuke could get some type of information from Naruto tonight. The cab driver had some shitty pop music playing. Naruto was trying to hold his head up. His eyelids felt so heavy. Soon they arrived at Sasuke's house.

"What a cozy little abode," Naruto joked. He opened the door and stumbled out. Sasuke paid for the fair and the cab driver left quickly. He gestured for Naruto to follow him. Sasuke unlocked the door and let Naruto inside. Naruto gave a chuckle. Sasuke's house was bland.

"What?" Sasuke flipped on the light.

"You really don't have any style,"

"Whatever," Sasuke brushed the comment off.

Naruto plopped himself down on the black couch. The couch was firm and uncomfortable. He'd probably catch a cab ride home later. Sasuke sat in the armchair across from him. Sasuke was about to ask the question when he was interrupted by Naruto.

"So why did you really ask me out for a drink?" Naruto asked. Sasuke was surprised at the change of attitude, maybe Naruto wasn't as drunk as he thought.

"What are you trying to say?" Sasuke sat back in the armchair.

"You don't really seem like the friendly type,"

"What are you talking about?"

"I know what you're trying to do Sasuke,"

"Do you really?" Sasuke eyed Naruto. The blonde was calm. He had a composure that Sasuke lacked. The raven felt nervous for some reason.

"The only advice I can give you is to mind your own business,"

"I'm still not sure what you mean Naruto,"

"You know exactly what I'm talking about," Naruto sat up his eyes glaring at Sasuke.

"You're my partner I need to know I can trust you,"

"Same goes for you I need to know that I can trust you," Naruto got up and walked to the door. He looked back at Sasuke.

"There's a reason those files are classified," he opened the door and walked out into the cold night.

Once the blonde was gone Sasuke sat back. Part of him felt childish. The look on Naruto's eyes was more than just anger. It was fear.
