The enemy of my enemy is my friend
Sorry it's late and you all can hate me later :) Please leave a review
The bone chilling moan of the dead could be heard from a mile away as more and more began to assemble until there was a horde large enough to over run a small town. For months their food supply had been running low as animals began to flee the area and people became more adept at avoiding them, and now they were headed in one direction in search of more. Food that is. Their slow shuffle made them barely a threat at a distance but when they managed to corner a poor soul it took only seconds to take them down. Lately they had been moving in a distinct direction, one that an awful lot of noise had been coming from in the past few days and as they neared their destnation they could pick up the scents of living flesh, food, and tis only pushed them more. Within another day they would he feasting on a not so lucky meal.
"I'm tellin you that something isnt right Katrina, we havent seen her all day. John seems to be going a little overboard." Sam looked to his friend with worry and stopped his pacing for the moment as he saw John approaching, a hard calculating expression on his face and a weapon in hand. "Sam, assemble a team and take watch at the north end of camp, i've been getting small reports of those dead parasites moving in packs over there. See that it's taken care of." For a moment the younger man contemplated ignoring the orders and looking for Wren, but if these reports were true then he needed to be on his toes or the whole camp could be wiped.
Another minute went by as Sam met Johns stare and finally gave in with a sigh, "Ok." And he strode off frustratedly without another word for fear that if he tried to listen to another word the older man said he would surely take a swing at him. The two watched him leave with neutral stares and Katrina looked over to her leader after a moment of silence, her voice wondering and soft as always. "So how is Wren? Sam told me that you said she wasn't feeling well." She expected him to smirk and make a witty comment about how she was always to proud to admit when she wasn't feeling well but the cold look she recieved said something else.
"She's fine."
Why was e suddenly acting this way? Sure he had a scarred past, they all did, but this was a whole nother person. It was almost as if all this time he had been hiding behind a mask. But her attention was pulled away from her thoughts and suspicions as Sarah called out to her and beckoned her over. "Coming!" She began to walk over and put on a fake smile for her friend but she could push the nagging thought that John was hiding something. And she was determined to find out what it was.
Pain was the second on my list of major problems at the moment but number one was escaping. I had finally figured out that I was in one of the watch tents that was set up near the borders of the camp so I was pretty secluded. And now between the blood loss and head injury I knew I was too weak to yell for help. John had periodically checked in on me and gave me some food and water but he was still cruel to no end, blaming me over and over for something I didn't remember, calling me disguting for being with a monster and other insults Ididn't care to think about at the moment. Occasionally I would fade in and out of reality, considering that I probably had another concussion, and each time it seemed to be a bit later in the day. The first time it was barely light out so I assumed that it was around 2 or 3, and around that time John had come in with a few scraps of food and water, feeding them to me begrudingly before leaving once more.
The second time I remember hearing voices not too far away and they sounded like they were headed towards the forest, possibly the hunting patrol meaning that it was around 7:30 now. "Help...please..." but my cries were futile as they barely carried to the other side of the tent. In the back of my mind I knew that my chances of survival weren't high and it didn't really bother me, but what did was the fact that I couldn't remember that tall man. So familiar yet so unfamiliar and Charlie said I knew him very well, but no matter how hard I tried it just wouldn't come to me. Is this what it felt like to be lost? Not physically but emotionally...spiritually. Drifitng without ever really knowing what your purpose was and who you had been close too.
The thought bothered me to no end. I began to feel tired once more and I let my eyes slowly close, maybe the realm of sleepwould bring me some sense of peace. As I slept my thoughts drifted in and out, some of how to escape and others of how John may decide to end it for me. Would he want it to be quick and painless, probably not, or if he wanted me to suffer. Go through the pain that he may have when he found out about his brothers death, and if it was really my fault then maybe I deserved it, but maybe I didn't. I don't know how much longer I went on thinking about these things but I know it was all too soon when I was roughly shaken from my sleep.
"Hurry and get up! Everyone is getting restless about not seeing you so I want you to tell them that there's nothing to be worried about and your fine. Understand?" I wanted to sneer and give a sarcastic remarke but then i stopped to think, if he was going to untie me then I coukd make a run for it. And surely he couldn't catch ,e if everyone else was there and against him? I decided that this was going to be my best and only chance for freedom, but would I be able to make it? But my question would have to wait as I found myself being shaken again as he waited impatiently for an answer, "Well?!" I opened my mouth obidiently to answer and put my plan into action but once again I was interrupted. Only this time it wasn't by John.
"John! John help, the camp is being attacked! We have to get eveyone out of here!" He motioned for me to be quiet and he quickly made his way outside to talk to the panicked woman, trying to calm her down and get a grasp of the situtation. "Alright Sarah what do you mean the camp is being attacked?" I could hear her trying to get a grip on herself as she answered him in as calm a voice as possible but it was stilll easy to dectect the fear in it. "Sam and I were on watch at the outer border and everything seemed normal, but we started to hear odd noises coming from the forest. He went to check it out and not more than a second later came back and told me to warn the camp, and you, that we needed to leave as soon as possible." There wasn't more than a moment of silence as John let the information sink in before answering in a hard voice, "Did he come back yet?" "No, last I saw he was waiting on the hill for something."
I couldn't believe what I was hearing, the camp was going to be attacked? By what? A thousand questions ran through my mind a mile a minute and I barely noticed John say something to me before taking off in the direction of the camp, now was my chance. I still felt fuzzy from hitting my head but I couldn't slow down for anything, he could try and leave me here to die or use me as a distraction. I looked around for anything sharp as i awkwardly stood, hoping he was dumb enough to leave something laying around, but it was useless. Looks like I would have to rely on my manuvering skills this time.
Making sure the coast was clear I slowly walked out of the tent and let my eyes adjust, it was nearing sunset and would be dark within the next hour and a half or so. No one seemed to be close at the moment so I made my way towards the camp, if I ran into John then I would be done for so hopefully someone I could trust was nearby. I made my way quietly into the camp and skimmed alongside the tents for cover, but I stopped as I heard a familiar voice begin to speak from inside of one. "Are you sure?" "Yes. We need to find her Sam, we don't have much time." I heard someone leave and I held my breath until the footsteps had faded, my chance to talk to Sam was now or never but before I could move away someone pulled my from behind and pinned me to the ground.
"Sam stop it's me!" I watched his face change from dangerous to elated and i was immediateky pulled back up and swept into a gentle yet firm hug. "Jesus Red where were you? And why are you tied up?" I smiled the best I could and held still as he cut my hands free, "Sam...it was John. He's losing it and we need to stop him before hee hurts someone else." He looked as if he was about to object but a scream from behind us drew our attention to see Katrina running our way with a pale face. "Kat what's wrong?" She said nothing but merely pointed to the hillbefore heading to her tent to gather her things. We looked warily at one another before turning and jogging up the hill, but what I saw on the other side knocked the air from my lungs and made my heart stop. "Oh my god..."
