Next Friday, I was at the salon getting my hair done for my date with Wes. As Jacqui, my hairstylist, contorted my hair into soft waves, my phone rang. I looked at the caller ID.
Autumn.
"Dammit." I cursed aloud. I had Autumn's number saved on my phone for one reason: so I knew not to answer.
"Is something wrong, Miss?" Jacqui asked.
"Make that someone," I sighed. Reluctantly, I picked up the phone.
"HELLO?!" Autumn screamed. I winced, almost dropping my phone.
"Jesus Christ, Autumn. You nearly made me deaf," I hissed.
"Sorry," Autumn trilled, although she didn't sound apologetic at all. "I was just wondering, what are your plans for today?"
I flicked the tiara charm on my Juicy Couture bracelet, wondering what Autumn's angle was. She was probably going to demand yet another favor from me. The last time that happened, the entire Auto Club nearly blamed me for a fiasco that Autumn had caused.
"Well," I smirked, "I have a date. So I'll be otherwise occupied. Sorry," I said the last word sarcastically.
"Where?" Autumn demanded.
"It's none of your business," I snickered. "I have to go, you're messing up my salon appointment. Later, loser." And with that, my perfectly manicured pointer finger pressed the end button.
My salon appointment went smoothly until five minutes later, when my phone rang again. I looked at the screen. Payton.
"What's up?" I asked.
"Autumn just called me crying! She said you're ditching your plans with her to go on a date!" Payton cried.
"What the hell?" I inquired. "One, Wes and I have planned this date since last week. Two, I never made plans with Autumn."
I knew what was going on. Autumn was there at Mabel's last week when Wes asked me out. She was doing this on purpose, so I would have to cancel my date with him.
"Oh!" Payton exclaimed. "It's just, she's so upset about it!" I could practically hear her frowning over the phone.
"Think about how I feel," I rolled my eyes. "I have my own plans, and Autumn expects me to automatically drop everything for her whenever she feels like it. Is that fair?" I asked my friend.
"No," Payton admitted.
"I have to go," I replied. "Wes is taking me to Chez Coeur at seven, and I still have to do my makeup and change my outfit."
"Okay, talk to you later!" Payton squealed, exuberant again.
"Later." I hung up, hoping that this would be the last of Autumn's interfering. But little did I know, Autumn Brooks had a few unfortunate surprises planned for tonight…
