Prologue
Long ago, before the walls, Remnant was the realm of mankind's purest ambitions. No dream or fantasy was out of reach.
Death was a choice, illness a distant memory, war a myth, genetics mastered like an instrument, and the sky the only
remaining limit. Humans sat content to live out their long lives, exerting total control over themselves. Some took after
animals, shaping their flesh on a whim. Some chose to isolate themselves, and took pleasure in refining their spirit or their
body. But some few were not content. Their gaze lingered on the stars, curious and hungry in equal measure. These few
pooled their knowledge and their wealth, and sought the moon. They fashioned shields from their very souls and powerful
weapons to protect themselves from what lay there. And in time they stepped on the alabaster surface. And were cursed
for it. Their souls became steeped in the abyssal void, their ambition turned to ravenous hunger, their minds warped cruel
and simple, and their bodies were thus blackened and twisted. The moon shattered, they were cast down from whence
they came, and became a blight upon the land. The nothing in their hearts yearned for that which they had lost, and they
began to feast upon their former fellows. One emerged from among the men, and stood to lead survivors against the tide.
Together they gathered and built up great walls, and took up arms. These were the first of the Hunters. The city of Vale
was founded embedded within the thick walls, and slowly became the only such place, the last place where humans dwelt.
All else was void, and the walls were tested often, beasts drawn by the scent of fear, anger, despair, and all emotion that
leads one to the void inside oneself. But the walls held, and life began anew within Vale. Time did as time does, and the
secrets of the past were lost beyond the curtain of death. Soon, the very history of man would follow suit. Today, man
remembers near nothing of his grand past, and concerns himself with survival. To this end new Hunters are continually
trained at the hallowed school of Beacon.
