Present – three months later…

I walked downstairs with Nessie's backpack that I knew she would leave here if she could. "Nessie, did you forget something?"

She got up from the couch and scowled at her backpack. "But mom," she whined, "I don't want to spend all weekend doing homework."

I set her backpack at the door with the rest of her stuff and checked to make sure everything was there, "I know, baby girl. You only have a couple of things left to finish up though. If I hear from your teachers on Monday that it wasn't finished, no TV time Monday night."

Nessie sighed but nodded in agreement. She was going to spend the weekend with Edward and come back home on Monday after school. The house always felt so empty when she was gone. Edward got the house, so he ended up being about 5 houses down. Nessie always just walked to her dad's house on his weekends because she knew that I didn't want to see him still. I opened the front door and pulled Nessie into a tight hug. "Have a good weekend, my angel."

Nessie returned my hug before picking up her backpack and heading down the street to her dad's home. I watched her until she got to the door and Edward opened it when she knocked. He pulled her into a hug and glanced down the street to where I was standing on the porch. I quickly turned and went back into the house, picking up the phone and dialing the number of the only person I wanted around right now. "Can I come over?"

I pulled up in front of the small house and placed my hand on my stomach. I've been feeling a little weird lately, but I put it off as nothing. I looked up and smiled as he stepped out of the front door. I quickly got out of my car and went to his door, immediately pulled into a hug.

"How are you doing, Bells?"

I returned his hug and sighed into his comforting smell, "I'm doing okay, Jacob. I promise."

We went inside and I was ordered to sit as he made some lunch for both of us. Jacob had been a lifesaver during this time. We used to be pretty good friends, but he ended up getting some feelings for me that I didn't reciprocate, and things kind of fizzled out after that. We ran into each other at the store a few days after the divorce, and he was concerned at my "zombie-look" as he called it. We ended up talking for awhile after that, and now he's become the person I'm leaning on to get through the difficult stuff.

Jacob returned to the living room with two huge plates filled with pancakes, syrup, bacon, and eggs. I laughed lightly, "Jake, there's no way I'm going to eat this much."

"I know, Bells. I'm planning on eating your leftovers."

I laughed and he sat down beside me, handing my plate to me. "Thank you. I really don't know what I would do without your friendship."

Jacob smiled toward me, "I'm here for you. Seriously. Anything you need. You and Nessie. She's a sweet girl."

Jacob and Nessie had only bet briefly one day, and she instantly adored Jacob. They had sat in the floor playing with her dolls the whole time he was there. I smiled at his words before we both began eating in silence.

After we finished eating, and then Jacob finished my plate, he turned the TV on and I laid back on his couch. Jacob pulled my feet into his lap and started massaging them. I sighed and sank back into the cushions, "You are so hired for this when I get further along in the pregnancy."

Jacob laughed and watched me, "I'll be here, Bells. You just say the word and I'll do whatever you need."

I turned away at his words, a small blush on my face. Jacob has made several pointed comments that he still would do anything for me, but I just can't be with someone else now. I just went through a divorce and I simply need a friend.

"Let's go do something today, Bella. Get your mind off of all the shit that's been going on. Nessie is with that ass, so she's fine. He does love his daughter, no matter how much of an asshole he is. So let's go do something fun."

I laughed and watched Jake's face light up at the sound. "I wouldn't mind going down to the park."

Jacob smiled and jumped off the couch, grabbing my hand, "To the park!"

I laughed and stood up with him. Jacob grabbed my hand and we went out to his car. He let go of my hand to get into the car, but picked it right back up. It isn't uncommon for Jacob and I to hold hands. It's comforting to me to know that someone is there. Someone solid and warm and kind is beside me, holding my hand. We talked about nothing important the whole way there, but I was more focused on how good it felt as he rubbed circles in the palm of my hand with his thumb.

We got out at the park and Jacob demanded that I sit on the bench in the shade because I'm pregnant. I giggled and watch Jacob fuss over me. "I've done this before, you know."

Jacob scowled as he sunk down into the bench beside me. "Well I haven't, Bells. I don't want you to overheat, that's all."

Jacob lazily threw an arm behind my shoulders and I leaned my head back to rest on it. The sun was shining today, but it was still mostly cool. It was really a perfect day to be outside. I closed my eyes as Jacob talked about the new car that he was working on.

I heard children laughing and looked up to find a large group of kids playing ball further down the park. I smiled, watching them play without a care in the world. Jacob continued talking about the car, but everything drowned out when I heard a single male laugh cut through all of the outside noise. I turned my head to the right and found Nessie and Edward a little ways away, playing tag. A sad smile appeared on my face as I watched them; as much as he hurt me, he truly loves our daughter.

Edward laughed as Nessie ran from him, hiding behind trees and benches. She squealed in delight as Edward closed in and scooped her up in his arms, tickling her. We used to go to the park all the time and play games like this. Right now, I should have been over there jumping onto Edward's back to free our little girl. We always tag-teamed him, and he always played along like the perfect father.

I shook my head and looked back to Jacob. "Jake, could we maybe go somewhere else?"

Jacob nodded, looking at me with concern, "Of course, Bells. What's wrong?"

"Edward and Nessie are here. I'm okay, really. I just would be more comfortable somewhere else in the park."

Jacob nodded and stood up to offer me his hand. I took his hand and stood up, immediately doubling over in pain with a loud cry.

Jacob's hand reached out for me as the world spun and I clutched my stomach. I heard someone yell my name from a distance and footsteps running closer as I fell into a pair of strong arms. The last thing I heard before I fell into darkness was a male voice, very close yelling, "What the hell did you do to my wife?"
