James pushed the almost full shopping cart down the aisle while Kate scanned over the shopping list in her hand one more time, when her phone made a noise.

She quickly pulled it out of her purse and glanced at the screen to read the text she'd just gotten and then typed something back.

"What's up?" James asked.

"It's Claire." She said and turned her screen off again before she put her phone back into her purse, "She wants to barbecue tonight. Needs us to pick up some ground beef, some buns and whatever else we think we might want on a burger."

As they reached the end of the aisle, James glanced over at the produce section, "Well, let's get some onions and some big tomatoes to slice up."

She nodded and followed his lead in that direction of the store.

They took their time, picking out the best looking butcher tomatoes and were equally critical while looking over the red onions that were in the display.

Just as they were about to leave the produce section, something caught James' eye and since he was the one with the cart, he nudged Kate and nodded in the direction of the bananas. "Go grab some bananas, Freckles."

A simple request, nothing really to it, but Kate stood frozen in her spot and stared at the fruit from a few feet away. She could see from right here that they were all still green and uneatable.

Her feet were unwilling to move, yet her lips and voice seemed to have taken on a life of their own, and she blurted out, "They're all green."

James' simply shrugged his shoulders, "So?" he replied, "They'll be good and yellow in a couple of days."

Without wanting to wait any longer, he turned the cart around and in the direction of the green fruit, Kate followed wordlessly.

He picked a few up, looked them over to find the best looking bunch, when he noticed the look on Kate's face.

The expression on her face was unreadable to him. It almost looked like she was scared, but that couldn't be. Or could it? That's when an image of her, trekking down the beach wearing a shirt as green as the banana cluster on her back, appeared before his eyes and he had to smile at the memory. It seemed like a million years ago now.

"You've got some green banana phobia you forgot to tell me 'bout, Freckles?" he tried to joke with her and from the shy smile that crept onto her face it seemed to work.

"No." she quickly protested against his assumption and smiled as she stepped up beside him and began to look at the fruit herself.

She chose fast and put it in the cart.

James got behind the cart and they continued to gather the remaining things on their list and what Claire had asked them to bring.

While they stood in line at the checkout counter, James casually draped his arm over her shoulders and pulled her closer to him.

While standing there and waiting their turn in line, Kate smiled as she glanced from the diamond ring that was sparkling on her ring finger to the small cluster of green bananas in the shopping cart in front of her and a feeling of triumph came over her.

When she'd looked at James' standing there with those stupid taunting green bananas in his hand, she had an epiphany.

Taco night? I don't do taco night!

The tragic memory of that day flashed through her mind, yet she couldn't help but smile again as she leaned closer to her husband beside her.

I do now!

"What do you keep smilin' at?" His southern drawl brought her back to reality as they moved a few feet forward, a bit closer to the conveyor belt but it still wasn't their turn yet.

She looked up at him and smiled, shaking her head almost embarrassed that he'd noticed it, "Nothing."

"Bull." He replied and leaned closer to her and lowered his voice enough so only she could hear him, "You're starin' at those bananas, smiling like a fool. What's goin' on in that little head o' yours? Should I be jealous, Freckles?"

Once again she was reminded that her husband had the uncanny ability to turn everything, any place and moment, into a sexual innuendo.

She rolled her eyes and jabbed him in the side with her elbow. Not hard, but hard enough to wipe that smug grin off of his face. "What ya' do that for?" he complained and rubbed his side exaggeratedly.

She shrugged her shoulders at him and pushed the cart a foot forward again, avoiding his gaze.

It only lasted a minute before he spoke up again, "Seriously though. What goin' on?"

When she looked up at him Kate was surprised to see that he wasn't smiling at her anymore, "You really wanna know?"

He rolled his eyes at her for a change, "Just spill the beans, girl. What's up?"

She looked away from his penetrating gaze and twisted her ring around on her finger as doubt clouded her mind.

He's gonna laugh at me. He's not gonna get it.

"Promise you won't laugh?" she said and looked back up at him.

"Sure." He replied after noticing the earnest way she'd just looked at him. "I promise I won't laugh."

"I never bought green bananas before." She blurted out and looked at him for some sort of a reaction and added. "Even when I had Aaron."

He looked at her confused, working really hard to keep that smile off of his face while he tried to figure out what the significance behind the purchase of green bananas was. He came up with nothing, "Girl, you gonna have to give me more than that."

"Forget it." She turned away and shook her head, "It's nothing."

Was she poutin' now?

That nothing was clearly something and he was a hell of a lot more intrigued than he'd been just a moment ago. He really wanted to know now, because buying those damn bananas seemed embarrassing yet oddly important to her at the same time. He just had to know why!

He reached out and cupped her cheek, trying to get her full attention again. "Wanna tell me why?"

She shrugged her shoulders and he asked again, "Why'd you never buy green bananas, babe?"

She looked around, suddenly aware that they weren't alone but surrounded by strangers in the checkout line of some store.

She turned all the way towards him, the handle bar from the shopping cart brushed against her back, she leaned closer, one hand flat against this chest the other on his shoulder as she got up on her tippy toes to whisper into his ear.

He had not the faintest idea what she was about to say, but he knew just based on the look in her eyes and the way she was about to whisper to him, that this was something big.

"Because." She paused and he could feel the little hair on his neck stand up in anticipation of her next words, "I never knew if I would be around long enough. Every day I feared I'd lose Aaron, one way or another. I-I … I never planned that far ahead. I was never sure if I would stay!"

The words were simple, but the meanings behind them were everything but that. He felt the knot in the back of his throat forming.

He looked at her and she looked at him, their eyes communicating what their mouth wouldn't or couldn't at the moment.

He wordlessly wrapped her in his arms and kissed the top of her head while she buried her face in his chest. He glanced down at the seemingly insignificant fruit in the cart and a smile slowly crept across his unshaven face.

He understood!

Another minute passed, Kate looked up at him again, shy and still a bit embarrassed but she didn't say anything.

But he did, "I'm honored to be your first."

She held his gaze and he smiled a genuine smile at her before he added, "First reason to buy green bananas."

Your first reason to stay!
