Yours, Mine and Ours
"Shit I can't even get a damn signal in this stupid ATM!" cussed the middle-aged brunet as he hit the door to the ATM furiously.
"Ow...!" he gasped in a whisper as his fist turned a mild shade of magenta at the impact. Dejected at his vain attempts, he walked over and slumped against the wall with a heavy sigh.
This was not how he planned his first day back in Japan. He had imagined the look of joy in his grandmother's eyes at the sight of him and could literally feel her hitting him for not dropping by for more than a decade.
"Geez…" the millionaire sighed and started muttering under his breath, all the while forgetting about the one other person stuck with him inside the dark ATM.
His "wife" Miyu Saionji…!
Chapter 22
An Unreal Memory
{Beethoven Symphony: 5}
"Damn!"
Miyu jolted up in surprise much to the irritation of the brunet whose hand she mildly stepped on.
"Sorry!" she practically yelled, her heart beating hard and fast against her chest as she wondered what the hell was going on right now.
With every passing second she was certain that this was a dream but she only wished to how to snap out of it. Only, she had no idea if she even wanted to wake up from this.
This was definitely her Kanata. By god he hadn't even changed his ringtone in the past ten years.
"Hello," the brunet's voice echoed inside the ATM, "Seiya? Man, I'm stuck inside an ATM—Shit! Stupid signal! God, I hate this!"
Miyu, relax… This is just a dream, a really messed up one at that. Just relax and you'll wake up in a few minutes to get Shouta out to his Kendo class…
"Shouta!" she suddenly gasped, "How did I forget?!"
Dream or not, she had to tell Shouta that she was stuck else he'll throw a tantrum (more like a lecture) at her sloppiness.
"Are you ok?" his voice came outta nowhere, surprising her.
She could make out that he was the least concerned about her. It was clear that he did not remember her at all which is pretty weird.
How could he possibly forget her?
"Err… I just have to call somebody…" she mumbled under her breath.
The rain poured heavily outside the locked and dark ATM closely followed by earsplitting thunder and bright lightning. Inside the ATM, a more heavy war was going on inside Miyu's head as she tried to think of every possible reason as to why Kanata would've forgotten about her.
They were both seated opposite the doors to the ATM, their backs against the wall and his mobile between them with its flashlight on, illuminating the small room.
"Erm… you are Kanata Saionji, right?" she asked for the umpteenth time, pissing off the brunet even more than he actually was.
"Yes," he replied through gritted teeth and snapped, "Who the hell are you anyway?"
Okay... So he doesn't remember me but clearly knows who he is… partial amnesia, maybe? Snap out of it Miyu! Stuff like that happens only in dramas…
"My name is Miyu," she extended out her hand.
In the light of his mobile, she could make out that he did not appreciate her gesture. She slowly withdrew her hand and chuckled wondering why it felt like they were meeting for the first time.
"How do you know me?" he asked after an entire minute of silence except for the occasional thunder and the continuous downpour.
"Um…"
He looked curious.
"Well, it was a long time ago," she chuckled and turned away, fearing she would look like an idiot.
He really doesn't remember.
And here I thought he finally found out me and Shouta and has come to take us back.
Damn… I do feel like an idiot.
"Hey, you ok?" he asked again.
"We met on your 25th birthday," she said with a bright smile.
'It's just a dream,' she told herself, 'At least make the best of it…'
"Oh!" he said, and looked thoughtful for a minute.
"You were throwing party for your friends at a club…" she continued as her memories of how they met came rushing back to her.
Ten years… and yet the brunet had not aged at all. He looked exactly as he did that day when he pulled her for a dance on that fateful night… convincing her that this indeed was a dream…
He chuckled, "you don't seem like someone who'd go to a club…"
"Well," she smirked, "it was a special day…"
"Christmas…?" he guessed.
"Nope… It was the day I met you…" she gave him her usual wide smile.
It didn't matter that he didn't remember her.
As long as he is fine, nothing else mattered.
After all, that is what she bargained for anyway.
"Hey…"
She looked at him and as she saw him look at her questioningly, the lights in the ATM blinked several times before finally coming to life. A loud ping was heard and the little green light on the door illuminated which could only mean one thing.
"Thank god!" muttered Miyu as she got up on her feet and rushed over to the door. She put her card in the little slot and pulled the door open.
"Hey!" she heard him call her.
She blinked and slowly turned.
"Yea?" she asked, her heart thumping painfully again.
She looked at him, wondering if this would be another good-bye.
No Miyu, don't look back. You can't and should never hurt him again.
"I-I gotta go now… Take care…" she smiled and was about to leave when he called her again.
"What did you say your name was?"
She sighed.
She missed him so much.
Ten years…
Ten years she wished that he would come knocking on her door, demanding to return.
All those difficult times… painful questions…
Shouta…
All the times she had to lie to her own kid.
Everything
Everything was standing right before her now and she could not move.
This was her Kanata and she could do nothing about it.
Not anymore.
She could not even collect her own thoughts let alone decide as to how to approach this stranger.
Yes, this was not her Kanata anymore.
This was someone living his life without remembering the days that they spent together… the tears they shed for each other… the nights they spent in each other's arms…
Every word he had said to her still haunted her… every touch… every kiss painfully implanted in her memory.
"It doesn't matter," she said with a teary smile and before she could stop herself, she walked over to him and on her toes placed her lips against his, shocking the brunet and whispered on his lips, "not anymore".
Before the brunet could even recover from the shock of being kissed by a total stranger, she rushed out of the ATM and disappeared into the night.
"Wow…" he gasped, touching his lips, "what the hell just happened?"
