"I wish you'd told me."

Levi takes a seat beside her on the bed, a place they had shared just that morning, if he knew then what he did now he wouldn't have left the comfort of her embrace.

Her eyes were on him, a question at the tip of her tongue. He could only stare at her in return, taking in the sight of her, dreading what came next. Without a doubt, by the end of the conversation someone would walk out the door.

He still couldn't be quite sure who it would be.

"Mikasa…" He spoke her name softly; not quite anger on his voice, but not quite the endearing tone he had used that morning either. "Were you going to tell me?" He asked, his eyes still on hers. He doesn't miss the way her lips part and realization sparks in her eyes. His words need no further explanation.

Her only response is silence, she tore her gaze away from his. He knew her well enough to recognize the shame in her posture, to know how she was steadying herself before speaking.

In another situation, Levi may have remained silent, drown everything, and mask his expression into apathy. But this was her and she already knew her way behind his defenses. "I know we're not together, not really, and I have no right…" He trailed off, for a moment not knowing how to continue. He had no right to feel betrayed, he knew plenty well from the start which direction her gaze turned to. He sighed, it almost sounded like defeat. "I wish you'd told me."

Mikasa turned to him, her expression apologetic. "I didn't want you to find out like this." She spoke and reached out to him, before deciding against it and halting midway, still in that moment he would have welcomed the comfort even if his pride wouldn't. "I didn't mean to… I didn't think this meant anything to you."

"It does." It did, he wanted to correct himself, but he knew he'd be lying through his teeth. Even with it all, he would still take her back if she'd have him. Maybe he should have put more effort into claiming her heart as he'd done her body. Maybe he shouldn't have held back, he should have said something sooner.

His eyes fall to the floor then, his hands on his knees gripping the fabric of his pants. "I love you." He blurted out, and as the words left his lips he knew that it made no difference. If he'd said it earlier, it would have all ended much sooner. It wouldn't have changed the outcome.

They were never going to make it.

"But you don't feel the same." He couldn't look at her, not after his pitiful declaration. Levi couldn't let her see his despair, he couldn't do that to her. Not when she'd been clear with him from the start. "You should go to him." His words were flat, almost an order.

He watched her back as she left the room, and he wished they could go back to that morning and never let it end.
