Unimaginable Knowledge

It was hours later, after dinner that night when the two sat curled up together on one of the couches at the cottage that Lily thought to ask about Lucius' comment.

Lifting her head off his chest, "Lucius, when you found me with the rose earlier, you said something about Ancient magic, what did you mean?" She asked leaning away from him a little to see his face as he answered.

Lucius looked down toward his fiance, eyebrow raised, "You mean the Ancient Rite you used when you were pulling the petals off that rose?" Now the other brow raised to meet the first, "You mean you did that without knowing what you were doing?" He stared at her incredulously, shocked and concerned that she would play with such powerful magic without even understanding it.

"I knew what I was doing, it's something muggles do, usually girls, when they like someone. Usually it's done when the person isn't sure if the other persons feelings are returned and are feeling uncertain of the strength of their own feelings. You pick a flower, and then pick the petals off. If it lands on 'loves me' it helps you feel more certain, and if it lands on 'loves me not' you can either ignore it because it's just a flower, pick more until you get the right answer, or you can decide that it's a sign and decide to work on getting over your feelings."

Lucius does not sputter because Malfoys are to dignified to stutter, but he does stare, mouth slightly open, and then he presses his lips together tightly, taking a deep breath with his noes. And another with his mouth, before saying "Something all muggles do? Just do, or redo, whenever they want. With roses, while drawing blood?" His face was stony, trying to keep calm, because muggles knew about one of the Ancient Rites and how did they know that?!

"Well no, roses aren't usually used because they are valuable, sometimes expensive and hard to grow, it's usually done with whatever common flower is around, it just happened to be that you didn't have anything common, and it's never done with blood, I just wasn't careful when I picked the flower and pricked myself." His lips thinned again, and he blew a breath out of his noes, in a frustrated but controlled way. "And it's more of a children's game, it's expected that little girls will grow out of needing the comfort of it when their romantic pursuits aren't going ideally. I normally don't do such childish things, but I was feeling a little sad, and wanted the comfort of it, I guess." Lily realized she was rambling, had been rambling, but this was apparently really serious, because Lucius was mad. She decided to stop before making even more of a fool of herself than she already had.

"How long have muggles picked petals off of flowers to determine the feelings of their intendeds?" It would be good to know how long ago the muggles learned the Rites, to begin to understand the depth of their unrealized knowledge. He would not panic. Malfoy's never panic.

"Oh, I don't know, generations and generations, and it's not strictly for an intended exactly, it can be used for anyone you have feelings for, to make a guess at if they have feelings back at you. It's considered very trivial except by the most love-struck of girls, and even they know it's not serious." Lily is looking at him in concern now, but she still is very calm, almost dismissive of the anger she had been in earlier. This was perfectly ordinary for muggles, playing with the Ancient Rites.

It was a few minutes of silence while he seemed to calm down before he finally replied. "You mentioned uncertainty of feelings. What uncertainty were you thinking of when you did it decided to use a muggle child's game to accidentally invoke an Ancient Magic Blood Rite?" He was still mad, and mildly terrified, what other Magical Rites did muggles know without knowing, what other ways might she hurt herself thinking she was doing something harmless and muggle without realizing. But he was also concerned, she had said such games were used for comfort, admitted to needing comfort, comfort he had obviously failed to give her, comfort that she had almost destroyed their relationship seeking.

He was staring intently at her, and she gave a sad smile, "Lucius, we are very different people, and I know you gave me the necklace, and I know that a pendant is the first Malfoy courting gift, but you hadn't actually said it, and I didn't want to get my hopes up or be reading too much into it because I wanted." She stopped abruptly, so used to never actually saying the details of her feelings for him.

Now Lucius's eyes narrowed and a small smirk began forming at the corner of his mouth, "You wanted…" he trailed off, hoping she would finish. He would do his best to give her whatever it was, she would never what for anything he could give her

A small blush began forming on her face, but she looked him in the eyes, having never been willing to back down in from of him before. And really, whey were engaged, so there was nothing to be afraid of now. "I wanted it to be a courting gift, wanted you to return my feelings."

His smirk grew, "Well my pet you, certainly have no fear of that being a problem now." he traced the lie of her face with his hand.

"No, no I don't, do I?" Her smile was soft as she looked at him, and when she leaned in, he leaned toward her too, their lips meeting in a soft kiss.
