Chapter 18
Wednesday
It wasn't too long of a walk before I made it to the outskirts of the city, Juliet had left me alone after a couple minutes of walking, which I was thankful for. The silence gave me time to think about everything that was happening; mostly about what had happened in the past four days. There wasn't enough time in the world to think about what had happened in my entire life, but this was a start.
Four days ago it was just me and the girls spending time together while I hunted on the side. Now, even though it pains me to admit it, my family has grown so much. My girls have the Winchester brothers, I'm sure once I'm gone Bobby and Caroline might just meet up, and I slept with an angel.
Now, I don't believe in that love at first sight bullcrap, or falling in love two days after meeting each other like in fairy tales. But, if I was being honest… I had grown attached to Castiel. He's an angel, so it wouldn't work out between us even if I hadn't already promised my soul to Crowley. He would be called up to Heaven all the time, I would be busy with cases, and we could never have a family together.
I've never told the girls, but I have always wanted at least one child. In my dreams, I would have a real job, a big house, maybe some animals, and a son or daughter I could raise with a normal life and a dark secret. With my job, and the inability to get out of it, this would never happen. I didn't even finish middle school for crying out loud, there's no way in hell I would be able to land a normal job that would earn me a house and kids.
Even if I could have a normal sliver of life, it couldn't be with Castiel. Angels don't get married, they don't age, they can't have children with humans unless they wanted their offspring to be hunted and killed, and they have a "divine purpose" or some horse shit like that. So it could never work.
Who said I even wanted it to work out? I had known the guy for four days and had only slept with him a couple times that one day. We aren't in a relationship, we haven't said the "L" word, and we've barely spoken to each other since.
But… I do miss him when he's not next to me. I miss his innocence and inability to comprehend sarcasm, especially since that was my second language. He was perfect for when I get injured on a case, and for just sitting there to keep me company. We didn't talk all that much when we were together, but the silence was all we needed.
Maybe I do love him, maybe I wish we could work out. And maybe I love the brothers too, they've treated us like family, and the girls have grown so attached to them. Maybe I opened my heart to the right people at the wrong time and I should just leave now. They would look for me, sure. But Cas had just branded me, so even he couldn't find me unless I wanted him to.
Maybe I should just stick to the task at hand and not think about any of this bullshit until I'm dead. Yeah, that sounded like the best plan. No more thinking, just doing.
The city wasn't a small one, so it took a while to get to where I needed to go. And where I needed to go was a high school near the outskirts of the city. It wasn't the best high school out there, but it was probably better than the inner city schools, right? Right… I think. Anyways, when I got there I showed a lady my badge, and was sitting in the principal's office in no time. He was an older man named Mr. Sanders, definitely too old school for my taste.
He invited me to sit down in his office, closing the door once I was inside. "I don't understand why the FEDs are here, we've already spoken to the police, and the students have been questioned."
I cleared my throat, nodding a little. "We like to follow up on the witnesses a couple times, to both make sure the stories are still the same, and to make sure they are doing alright given the circumstances. I understand three of your students have been found dead in the last week, and they were part of a larger group of friends, correct?"
Mr. Sanders nodded, unbuttoning his last button as he sat down behind his desk. "That is correct. And that particular group of students aren't the smartest students out there, but they show up to school at least."
"And has anything happened to any students that weren't in that group before the three fatalities?" I questioned, shifting in my chair a little. "I read that your future valedictorian tragically died in a fire earlier this month, how did that happen?"
He sighed, loosening his tie a bit as he leaned back. "I don't see how these are connected."
"I'm just following up on details, it may or may not be important to the story as a whole." I reassured him, tilting my head a little as he pushed his glasses farther up his face.
"Timothy was a bright student, the president of all of the scholarly clubs he could fit into his schedule. He was at home in his garage, working on a miniature rocket science project of his, when the rocket went off and set everything on fire. The medics said he might have hit his head just as the fire started, which it why he didn't get out. We turned his locker into a shrine, a lot of students have added to it, but I don't think the kid had that many friends. The group of kids had actually made fun of him several times before we suspended them for a week."
I thought for a couple seconds. "Do you mind if I take a look at that shrine? And I need a list of names of the kids in that group, if you don't mind."
He shook his head a little. "I will have my secretary print that out for you, and will have to decline your request to view the shrine. There is nothing there you need for your case." He said, standing up. "Now if you will excuse me, I have work that I need to finish."
I pushed myself out of my chair and nodded. "I hope I haven't taken up too much of your time, thank you for seeing me in such short notice."
Mr. Sanders buttoned his jacket again before going to open the door to let me out. "Next time, call a day before." He grumbled, closing the door as soon as I was through the threshold.
I wonder who shoved a stick up his ass. The secretary handed me the list of names on my way out of the school, and I waited out in the parking lot for when the kids break for lunch.
Third Person
After the group finished up at the waffle house, they climbed into the Impala to find a bowling alley. Maria and Olivia continued to rush to open the doors, but Sam and Dean beat them to the Impala, all four still on their fanciest behavior.
They played two games, and the girls lost both of them.
"How the hell did I get so bad at this?!" Maria huffed, bowling her last gutterball. Olivia shrugged and took a sip of her drink.
"I'm not going to even act surprised, I would suck at that too."
Dean pulled Maria into the seat next to him once she was close enough, grinning a little but not too much since being a sore winner wasn't fancy. "Hey now, I'm sure with practice you could hit at least four pins at the same time."
Sam cleared his throat and elbowed Dean on his way to putting an arm around Olivia's shoulders. "What my brother is trying to say is, you girls don't suck, you just haven't had enough bowling time to have the skills yet. But the more we go out, the more skills you will acquire. "
"Holy fuck that was nice and fancy." Olivia said.
Maria siiiighhhed. "I think they won this round. I also think its bullshit."
Dean smiled. "Marivia: 1. Dam: 1. Where to next?"
"I think we agreed on the bar, right?" Maria questioned.
"Yeah! So we could play darts and shit. We're going to lose that too, just so you know. I told you, I only do poetry." Olivia warned, standing up.
"Either way, you'll look good playing." Sam spoke up, standing right after his date, who proceeded to blush and mutter aw, stopit through a grin.
Dean helped Maria out of her seat and lead the group to the shoe return. Maria sat down to start untying her shoes before Dean knelt down in front of her to take her shoes off for her.
"Well aren't you such a gentleman." She commented, sitting up straight to watch him as he even put her regular shoes back on for her.
"A lady should never have to worry about her shoes in a dress like that." He said, sitting next to her once he was done to fix his own shoes.
Sam took all of the bowling shoes up to the counter and went back to link arms with Olivia, leading her to the doors. "You do look nice though, and not just because you're all dressed up."
"Thank you, you look quite dapper yourself, young man." Olivi swooned, leaning against him as they opened the doors together as Marean followed behind them.
"Maybe we should lazer tag first, then go to the bar, then go to the beach. There's one about twenty minutes away from here."
"I'm down for that. Although don't expect me to get into the water." Dean piped in.
"It's late October, I wouldn't get in anyways." Mari shivered, shaking her head as Dean opened the Impala door for her.
"Then lazer tag it it." Sam nodded, opening the door for Olivia and helping her in.
"We're totally gonna crush them." Olivia whispered once the doors were closed.
"Yeah, there's no way they can out fancy us when they're shooting at us."
Mackenzie's POV
I heard the bell ring from the parking lot, and a couple minutes later the seniors started spilling out of the school to go get lunch that wasn't completely disgusting. I knew that the group of kids had a car they liked to drive in, and I found it while I was waiting. I had taken off the jacket of my suit and unbuttoned most of my shirt, as well as untucked it from my pants. My hair was now down, and I was trying to look less like an agent, assuming they wouldn't answer honestly if I did.
The list of names included Daryn, Austin, Hammond, Zach, Tyler, Ryan, and Braiden, the three last ones were already dead, so it was just Daryn, Austin and Hammond walking to the car.
"Who the fuck are you?" One of them asked once they saw me leaning against the car, and he earned a nudge from the fatest one.
"Someone I would fuck if you know what I mean." He muttered, earning a laugh and a high five from his friends.
"You might get a chance to, if you're tough enough." I said, tilting my head as leaned back against the car.
They all slowly stopped laughing and just stared at me as I smirked. "Well? Aren't you going to introduce yourselves?"
The first one nodded and stepped forward, offering me his hand. "I'm Daryn, pleasure to meet you." I shook his hand and grinned.
The fat asshole pulled Daryn back and leaned against the car next to me. "The name's Austin."
"Nice to meet you Austin." I said, glancing at the one who hadn't spoken yet. He waved a little, not coming much closer.
"I'm Hammond."
I sat up a little. "Well, now that I know your names, how about we have a quick chat?"
"About what?" Hammond questioned, going to put his backpack in the car.
"About what happened to Timothy."
"That little freak? He had it coming, always acting so smart and better than us." Austin snorted.
I crossed my arms a little. "Did you teach him a lesson, tough guy?"
He nodded and smirked. "I sure did, we-" Daryn nudged him before he could finish.
"No ma'am, we did not. We didn't do anything."
"Oh, so you're not the ones who went into his garage, started a fight, knocked him out, and ran when the fire started?"
They fell silent and just stared at me.
"Let me ask you another question," I shifted and looked at them all. "Any of you ever feel cold spots at home or at school, hear anything you pass off as the wind so you don't get paranoid? Because I'm sure that happened to Zach, Tyler and Braiden before they died."
"Look bitch, I don't know what you're talking about, but you don't know nothing." Austin said, standing up.
"Oh really? I thought you said you taught him a lesson?"
"We did." Hammond spoke up, staring at the car tires. "It just went bad, that's all. We didn't mean to kill him."
"Dude, shut up." Daryn hissed.
"No! I've seen him, Daryn. Everywhere I go all I see is his burnt up body. I can't take it anymore."
I held up my hands. "Easy, kids. I'm not going to tell anyone on you, I just needed to get the story straight, that's all." I said, grabbing my jacket off the hood. "Do me a favor, don't be such douche bags, alright? It won't get you very far in life, and you'll end up like your dead friends." I warned, starting to walk away.
"You never told us who you were!" Daryn called, crossing his arms.
"That's because you don't need to know!" I waved a little, leaving them to sort that mess out with themselves.
I left the parking lot and that area completely, finding a pay phone and calling in to tip the authorities about foul play at the time of Timothy's death. Of course I wasn't going to let those guys off the hook, but I didn't feel like sticking around them for too long, they reeked of too much testosterone.
I texted Olivia to update her, not expecting a response back.
Me: Solved the case, have to salt and burn Timothy Kenner's body tonight once it gets dark. Have fun on your date, tell me all about it tonight when you get back.
I really do hope they're having fun, and that they're staying safe. I trust those boys to protect them if anything did happen while they were out. As I pocketed my phone and started walking down the street to find something to do, I heard something in the alley next to me.
It sounded like a baby's whimpers, but I didn't hear anyone trying to calm them down. I slowly started heading into the alley, getting my gun out just in case. As I passed a dumpster, I could hear that the noises were coming from inside the trash. I quickly put the gun away and lifted the lid to find a newborn baby wrapped in an old shirt.
"Hi honey." I whispered, carefully picking him up and cradling him to me. He started crying more once he was disturbed, but he didn't seem to have the energy to move around a lot.
"Castiel!" I called, looking up at the sky. "Cas please! I just need to borrow you for a couple seconds!"
"I'm here." He said behind me. "What is wrong?"
I turned around to show him the baby, looking between him and Cas worriedly. "I just need you to make sure he's okay."
Castiel looked concerned, glancing at my stomach before looking at the baby. "I didn't… When did you have a baby?" He question as I shook my head.
"Somebody left him in the trash, I don't know whose he is or how long he's been there." I explained, moving closer to Cas. "Can you please just heal him?"
He pressed his lips together and nodded, placing two fingers on the baby's forehead. A couple seconds later, he stopped crying, just looking up between Cas and I as I smiled down at him. "Isn't that better?" I cooed, looking up at Castiel. "Thank you, that's all I needed."
"What are going to do with it?"
"I don't know yet, probably go get him some milk to eat, some diapers, other baby stuff, and drop him off at a hospital. I don't want him to have to go through the system, but it's not like I can keep him; I'll be dead in a couple days." I paused. "Maybe Carol can take him!"
Castiel frowned as he listened before slowly pulling me into a hug. "I wish you would stop saying things like that." He sighed.
I shifted to make sure the baby wasn't crushed, leaning my head against Castiel's chest. "Things like what?"
"Like how you will be dead in a couple days, and then moving on like it is not big deal."
"But it's not a big deal, I've known for a year that I will die. And before I made the deal I knew I didn't have much time as is. I'm a hunter, dying early is in the job description." I shrugged.
"But it's a big deal to me." Castiel said, pulling back to look at me. "When you thought I was Jesus Christ I saw a life with you. I didn't know what it meant, but I liked it. And then we… did things … nice things. And the things we did could give us one of those," he nodded at the baby, "if we had time. And I want that with you, I think. It's all so new to me."
I thought for a couple seconds before slowly pulling away, staring up at him. "Cas, even if I wasn't going to die, we still couldn't have this together. An angel and a human make a Nephilim, and those are hunted down for just being alive. Our child would feel like a monster its whole life, and I wouldn't want that for anyone. As much as it would be nice to have us work out, I don't think we could. I'm sorry."
Castiel looked behind me so he didn't have to look at me, clenching his jaw a little. "It isn't fair. I could change this if-" He paused, looking up. "I have to go."
I frowned. "Wait, hold on. What could you change, Cas?"
He gave me an apologetic look. "I really have to go."
"Can you just answer me for on-" I was cut off by Castiel's lips against mine, and found myself sinking into his kiss, wanting him to never leave. But within a couple seconds, he gently held onto my face, leaning his forehead against mine with a quick I'm sorry before vanishing.
"Cas?" I whispered, closing my eyes and trying to keep the feeling of him against me. "Please stop leaving me."
"Aww, wasn't that cute?" Said a voice from further into the alley. I quickly opened my eyes and turned around to see who it was.
A woman, maybe a little older than me, came out of the shadows, clapping her hands slowly. "I didn't think that would work so well."
"Who are you?" I growled, tightening my hold on the baby. The woman put her hands on her hips, smirking as she tilted her head.
"I'm Tabitha. And you're the famous Red, it's a pleasure trapping enough of this small talk." She said, snapping her fingers.
The air instantly left my lungs as I gasped, putting a hand to my throat. Tabitha walked over and forcefully took the baby out of my hands carelessly holding him against her. "Let's not do this here, I've got a nice little place for us to go and chat about some things." She said, digging into my pocket to take out my phone and gun before throwing them into the dumpster.
"You won't be needing those."
I could barely focus on her, starting to drift into unconsciousness as I kept my eyes on the baby. "Sleep tight, Red. You're going to need all the rest you can get." She mocked, before everything went black.
I know it's been a while, and I've forgotten how this website works, but I'm really excited to start this back up again. This is what I plan to do during my winter break. I don't know how often I will post, but I know it won't be every two years.
