Curtain Call
She would always be a free spirit. There was no question to it. Despite the chains, the punishment—the illegality of a shinigami being free, taichou forbid—she held her head high. Raven bobbed up after each shock, mouth choking in silent pain. It wasn't a matter of ignoring the hurt: it wasn't even about whether or not it did.
It was about breaking her.
He knew that.
When he cradled her in his arms for the barest fraction of a second, until they took her away, he knew.
When they tortured her, he knew.
She could never be broken.
Not even in the silence that enveloped her.
He carried her off, too stiff to show his tears.
End.
