Chapter 8: You Don't Even Know Him
The next few hours after their talk, they spent talking about everything that might cause trouble in the future, confessing mistakes for the second time if necessary.
"Sleeping with Peyton was just something that happened. She told me to come pick up my stuff and… it was break-up sex." Nathan answered truthfully after another repeated question of 'why' from Brooke.
"I guess I get it. I mean we both grew up with parents who didn't exactly give the best example that sex shouldn't be taken so lightly." Brooke replied trying to cut him more of a break.
There was no denying that with both of their fathers that they didn't have the best role models. Dan knocked up Karen and then left her because he knock up Nathan's mother Deb and Brooke's father had slept with most of the women in Tree Hill, including some of the girls from the local college.
"Yeah but I am not using that excuse anymore. I mean, I want more for myself then following in my father's footsteps. And I want more for you than turning into either of your parents." Nathan looked up at her, wanting to look at her as he spoke.
Nodding Brooke started to remember the first time they actually talked about their parents.
"I hate my dad!" Nathan yelled as he entered into the entirely pink room and slammed his basketball down on her perfectly made bed.
Tilting her head to the side, Brooke took a seat on the end of her bed and tried to read what he could be mad about. "What did he do now?"
Plopping back on her bed he let out a heavy sigh. "He got into another fight with my mom.. all over that mistake of a son." Pausing Nathan leaded up on his elbows locking eyes with Brooke. "Just because he had sex with her and she got pregnant doesn't mean that he has to ruin our family for…them." Nathan said with hatred.
"Well at least all of that happened before you were born.. I mean I caught my dad last week in his office with someone that looked 10 years older than me.." Brooke was trying to be sympathetic but they both had suckie parents.
"I am just over having to suffer from his mistakes. He decides to sleep with her and then I have to deal with the issues." He went on. "Me and mom don't deserve that."
At age ten, Nathan was already trying to be the man of the house hold. Even thought his father was still somewhat in the picture.
It all made sense to Brooke in that moment, even thought they were only ten she knew that he was going to be just like the princes she read about. He was going to come to the rescue someday.
Turning to him, Brooke tried to stop Nathan from over thinking about him being anything like his father.
"Nate you aren't your dad, your dad never cared about anyone but himself and I know you care about your mom and me which means you can't be your dad." She was trying to get him to see things from her point of view.
"But I don't want to be anything like him. He tears down everyone around him. Just look at my mom, look at everything she has done from him and put up with from him. It doesn't matter, he still does everything possible to hurt her… and then look at me… I have a best friend that would do anything for me and I keep fucking up."
"We all make mistakes Nathan!" Brooke interrupted him quickly with anger for him just not letting up. "There's nothing wrong with making a mistake every now and then as long as your intentions are good.. and I know your heart Nathan… it's good."
A small forced smile came to Nathan's face as he slowly started to give in. Reaching over he wrapped an arm around her shoulder, pulling her body into his side and giving her a warm embrace.
Brooke closed her eyes and leaded her head onto his shoulder, wishing she had all the right answers to make his doubts fade away.

As the bell rang for lunch, Brooke rushed out into the hallway towards her locker. She had plans to go off campus with someone of her friends and Nathan. It was a perk of being a senior.
Once she reached her locker, she'd unloaded all her books and turned to leave when the cute skater boy approached.
"Brooke" he said, stopping her before she had a chance to run off.
"Chase... right?" she asked like she didn't already know the answer.
He'd been the talk of the school last week, everyone wanted to know everything they could about him. Like her transferred from his last school because of an incident involving a fight.
"Yeah. Sorry about running into you the other day.. but anyways I was just actually come over to ask you if you wouldn't mind going to prom with me? I know we don't know each other but I promise we will have fun."
His face looked hopeful as she looked at him unsure of her own answer.
It had only been an hour into their Junior prom and it was already starting out rocky. Nathan and Peyton had come together and like always they were already arguing; about what, Brooke still wasn't sure to this day.
Brooke on the other hand had come with Felix, a new kid who she just happened to be her boyfriend of the week when prom rolled around. They weren't fighting but Brooke could careless what Felix did, she only needed him as her date.
Brooke found herself sitting alone at the table with Nathan, resting from busting out a few of her dance moves.
"Are you having fun Nate?" Brooke asked shouting over the loud music as she moved her chair in closer to his.
"After I get rid of Peyton the rest of the night has gone pretty well." He said with a laugh before nodding his head in the direction of all the guys over at the next table staring at her. "What about you... are you having some fun?"
A smirk appeared in her face as she peeked over her shoulder, seeing the boys waiting for her return. "I guess you could say that."
The DJ's voice came over the speakers, "Alright everyone… this is the last dance of the night and we are going to slow it down for you. So this is your last chance fellas, ask you special lady to dance."
Brooke looked around, wondering who she would choose to share the last dance with when she turned back toward Nathan, who was now standing and holding out his hand.
"So Brooke Davis… Can I have this last dance?"
Looking down she tried to hide the growing on her face as she extended her hand and took his, rising and then walking over to the dance floor with him.
An awkward moment passed as they tried to get into the right position before Nathan's hand rested on the small of her back and help her hand in his. In sync they finally started to sway as he caught her eye and gave her a small smile before pulling her in closer.
Resting her head against his chest she finally released the small smile she'd been trying to hide. The music flowed from the speakers and into the crowd before settling around them.
Brooke pulled herself in as close as possible and let herself enjoy the feeling of being in his arms. She didn't know if it was just the music or where they were but something made this feel different than anything she'd felt before.
Cause its you and me and all of the people
With nothing to do and nothing to lose
And it's you and me and all of the people
And I don't know why I can't keep my eyes off you.
The words started to sink in s she realized that they might only have one more year together before they would both move off to college. Her thoughts started to get to her as she squeezed her eyes shut and tried to live in the moment.
All of the things that I want to say
Just
aren't coming out right
I'm tripping on my words, You've got my
head spinning
I don't know where to go from here
Just like Nathan was reading her mind, he leaned in closer and whispered into her ear. "Nothings going to change.. it will always be me and you."
Calming all her fears Brooke relaxed and let all the worries drift away. Nathan's grasp tighten around Brooke's waist, only reassuring her of their bond.
Pulling herself from her memories, Brooke gave Chase a smile and nodded her head yes. "That would be great…"
"Really?" he asked some what shocked that she had agreed to actually go with him. "Your going to go with someone you don't know?"
"Trust me your better than most guys I do know." She said laughing lightly before taking his hand and jotting her name and number on his hand. "Just give me a call sometime" she said with one last smile before walking off.

Walking into the restaurant Brooke took a seat next to Nathan and waved, saying hi to a few other friends before turning her attention back to him.
"What? Couldn't wait for me? Too good?" she asked him jokingly, trying to pick at him as she nudged his arm.
"No but I waited a few minutes and you never showed so I figured you were running late." He explained simply before shooting her a smile. "So where were you?"
"Well…" Brroke said as her smile started to fade thinking of how she was going to tell him.
"Chase asked her to prom!" Bevin blurted out as Brooke looked up and shot her a glare.
"Who the hell is Chase?" Nathan asked not staring directly at Brooke waiting on an answer.
Swallowing hard Brooke tried to remember exactly why she had agreed to go to her senior prom with a complete stranger.
"He just transferred and he seems really nice.. plus I like the fact that his a mystery and he knows nothing about my past." Brooke tried explain how it had all made sense in her mind just a few moments ago, but by the look on Nathan's face she could tell he didn't feel the same.
"You don't even know him."
