Chapter 11: Nothing More I Want
Walking into his bedroom, Nathan was quite surprised to see Brooke already waiting for him, somewhat comfortable like she'd been there a while.
"Brooke?" A strong but questioning tone called out as he stopped by the dresser and placed his bags down.
"Nathan.." Brooke rose to her feet and was staring at him like she was going to tell him she was an alien or something.
"What?" he asked in a fed up tone, their last encounter hadn't exactly been a walk on the beach so he wasn't going to fake like this was his vacation.
"I just came because…you were right, Senior year was supposed to be me and you. I really want us to go to our last prom together, like it was meant to be." Her voice was shaky and somewhat nervous but he knew more that she thought he did.
Remember nothing in Tree Hill stays a secret for long.
"So Nathan..What's going on with your girl Brooke?" Tim asked as he leaned in from the desk next to him; completely ignore the lesson that the History teacher was lecturing on.
"What do you mean?" Nathan responded without taking his eyes off the front of the class. The last thing he needed was a detention when coach was looking for someone to take his anger out on.
"You did hear?" Tim's voice rose, excited that for once he had the inside scoop.
"What Tim?" Nathans tone was now irritated and annoyed, normally Tim's news wasn't exactly front cover material.
"Brooke got into some argument with Chase." Tim stated waiting for Nathan's reaction.
"It was a matter of time, she didn't really know the dude." Nathan stated flatly and uninterested.
"Actually I think they are done, she cried and everything." Tim treaded cautiously so not to piss Nathan off. "She skipped out on the rest of the day."
Staring forward Nathan didn't let his face give his true reaction, serves Brooke right for picking Chase over him.
"This has nothing to do with Chase breaking up with you right?" Nathan said in an almost evil tone, throwing his knowledge in her face.
"I actually just thought you wanted to go to prom with me.." Brooke's voice trailed off.
"I don't play second best."
Watching her face it was obvious she was about to cry, but she left the room before he got a chance to see it.
Nathan didn't want to hurt Brooke but he wasn't who she really wanted to go to prom with anyways.
--xXx--
Moments Later Deb burst through Nathan's door, visually anger and that anger was directed towards him.
"What" he questioned naively like he didn't know what she was about to yell at him for.
"What the hell did you say to Brooke, Nathan?" Deb yelled, like she was expressing Brooke's feelings for her. "She ran out of this house in tears and wouldn't even talk to me. What did you do?"
The glare was enough to leave a burn mark on Nathan's face.
"What she thought she could come here and play me like a fool to get a prom date just because Chase dumped her.." Nathan said in disbelief that his own mother was now taking Brooke's side.
"Do you even know why? Or where you too big of a jerk to care?" Deb asked not waiting for an answer to continue her tirade. "She is your best friend and that's how you treated her? It's a wonder how you two have stayed friends this long."
Nathan sat there as the guilt slowly started to settle in. This wasn't some random girl he'd turned down, it was his best friend.
The same person he'd been longing after for so long.
What was he thinking?
"Do you not remember how bad you wanted a chance to see what it would be like to be with Brooke? How long you have wanted her and the first chance you actually get you blow her off?" Deb went on as Nathan remembered the last time he'd come to her for advice.
"Yeah it's me" he said as he moved in her direction and walked over towards the counter where she had fresh baked cookies. "How'd you know I needed this?" he asked with a half genuine smile.
He didn't exactly want to tell his mother everything but he also knew if anyone knew what to do, it would be her.
"Why's that?" she asked moving closer to him and picking up a cookie for herself.
"So we all went to lunch and basically I found out Brooke said yes to some stranger for prom.." pausing his mind drifted a bit before saying what he was truly thinking. "I just thought we would go together this year."
Looking over at his mom, he knew that his secret crush on Brooke wasn't exactly a secret. After all she was the one that helped him pick out all the dolls and things he bought her when they were eight.
"Well did you ask her?" Deb asked as she looked up at him, already knowing the answer.
"No.. but it is our senior year!" Nathan objected.
"Well was she suppose to assume you two would go together? Or wait last minute for the actual plans?" Deb proposed all the questions hoping it would give Nathan more reasons for why Brooke had done what she did.
"But she could have asked.."
"Come on Nathan." Deb said before become more serious about the subject. "You brood around her most of the time wishing that you and Brooke were something more but you're not willing to tell her!"
Nathan sighed and pushed himself off the counter, wanting to just drop the topic all together.
"It's not that easy. If I tell her that I want to be with her and she doesn't feel the same then I just ruined our friendship." Nathan explained like he had every time before.
"And if you never tell her then you will never know!" his mother said with passion as she tried to explain the importance.
"Nathan!" Deb called out trying to gain his attention again.
"I know mom, okay but some things have changed since then." He added shaking his head as he started to feel disappointed by his reaction.
"What's changed so much Nathan? What's changed so much in two weeks that this longing you've had for Brooke has suddenly disappeared?" Deb stared at him, waiting for the answer that he didn't have.
"I tried to be that guy for her but I don't think she wants me to be that guy, or at least she didn't until Chase dumped her." Nathan said wanting to throw up his hands in frustration.
After all he'd wanted Brooke for a long time and the first time he ever decides to do something about it, she was all over a guy she hardly knew.
"Do you know why he broke things off Nathan?" Deb asked in a more sympathetic tone, seeming to know more that he did.
"What did I miss?" Nathan stood up staring at his mother, letting the curiosity get the best of him.
"Sweetie, Chase broke it off because he thought there was something more than a friendship going on between you and Brooke…I guess he could see what the two of you couldn't."
--xXx--
Nathan stood there, then began pacing again and staring at the personal side entrance to Brooke's bedroom.
Should he knock? Or just walk in like he normally would?
'You're so over thinking this' he whispered to himself.
He was frustrated with how he'd ripped into Brooke just a few hours ago and now he was going to look like a complete ass standing at her door step.
Finally taking in a long deep breathe he let out a sigh and took a step forward, knocking his knuckles against the wooden door.
Stepping back his eyes locked in on hers as she opened the door.
"Before you say anything I wanted to apologize. You mean more to me than anyone else and I let this whole drama with prom get out of hand." Silence fell between the both of them as they each stared into each other eyes.
"Brooke there's nothing more I want than to take you to prom."
