Burn

By: Katie Todd

"Ow!" the brunette yelled as she stepped away from the stove.

"What…" her boss started as he ran into the kitchen, his quick stride a tribute to his Marines t-shirt.

The brunette looked up at him with pain clouded eyes and blushed cheeks. Her hair was piled on top of her head in a messy knot and she wore a thick white apron over her jeans and fire red t-shirt. The skillet crackled threateningly seconds before the oven timer went off, proudly announcing their dinner's arrival.

Kate twirled from her date at the doorway and went to pull the stove open only to find a thick worn hand in front of hers.

"You're burnt" he said in a half growl as he assessed her thin hand. He swathed his hand in an oven mitt and expertly removed the casserole dish from the oven to set it on a cooling tray, "go sit" the order was mixed with mirth coated stress.

Kate huffed and settled on the stool behind him.

"I'm fine," she annunciated each letter; "the skillet just jumped at me" she smiled showing off perfect white teeth.

Her boss didn't seem to find the burn so harmless. He gingerly broke off a piece of the ancient withered allow plant she had sitting on her counter. Her eyes flashed in a mix of emotions the dominant being aggravation, when Gibbs' knelt down in front of her and gently took her thin hand in his scarred palm.

"Doesn't mess with that," she swatted at the aloe leaf, "kiss it better"

Firm lips coated the offending spot with tenderness. The brunette agent smiled at him warmly, her chocolate eyes conveying the emoting, before he coated the burn with allow anyway. Rough fingers rubbed against her palm, sending her into a fit of giggles. She swatted at him several times before he stopped her and stole a deep kiss. He finally released her to take a breath and she smiled at him softly.

It was hard to focus after he kissed her like that. After he let her know she was his and he was hers. But she had been working on, getting so lost in a kiss you couldn't remember your name wasn't always that great. Gibbs gave a rueful and direct smile at their dinner and Kate rose from the stool brushing against him as she passed.

"Jet?" she queried once she reached the stove, "can you get the drinks. There's lemonade in the fridge." Freshly home made his favorite, she had dug the recipe out of a forgotten book in his kitchen, but he didn't need to know that.

She heard him step toward the fridge and open the door. The tense giggles bubbled out of her mouth before she could stop them

"You're a really," she emphasized the word, "good kisser"

She heard his deep chuckle and reply as he shut the fridge door.

"That's what they all say." He laughed with a smile as the memories flooded back.

She sent him a short glare that was overpowered by a loving smile.
