Chapter 6

There was a tapping on the window as Jess got a drink of juice from the fridge. She had come in twenty minutes or so ago from the concert. She had not attended with Sara and AJ. They hadn't even been outside when she got there and when she texted they were already inside with her ticket. However with a text to Chris she was inside and backstage within minutes.

Now she was wary about opening the front door but the tapping continued and she had to open the door at least to tell the person to stop and go away.

"What are you still doing here?" asked Jess, as she saw Chris stood on the step.

He pointed over his shoulder and just in view – without view of them – was a big black van.

"Can I sleep in your garage?" he asked.

"You should move your car," said Jess, as she turned to put down her orange juice.

"Yeah can I move my car into your garage and sleep in there?" asked Chris.

"Jessica grab a sleeping bag while your in the garage. Chris you can sleep on the floor in Jessica's room. No funny business set an alarm for about five so he can get out before your sister wakes up," said Mrs Olsen.

"Mum sorry did we wake up?" asked Jessica.

"No I was coming down for some water," said Mrs Olsen.
"And checking I was home?" asked Jessica.

Mrs Olsen nodded.

"Your sister and AJ are doing yard work tomorrow. So if you want to go with Chris leave when he leaves," said Mrs Olsen.

"Willingly?" asked Jessica.

"No they more or less admitted without meaning to that they ditched you before you even showed up at the concert," answered her mother. "They're grounded for the day."

"Come one let's go move your car I'm tired," said Jessica.

Within ten minutes the car was in the garage and Jessica was coming out of the bathroom in her pyjamas.

"Is five ok for you to waking up?" she asked, as she fiddled with her iPod.

"Yes it's fine unless you want your sister and friend to find me," said Chris.

"Point taken," answered Jess, as soft music filled the room.

"Night," smiled Chris.

"Night," smiled Jess, as she flicked the light of by her bed.

After half an hour of hearing Jess toss and turn Chris spoke up.

"Can't sleep either huh?" he asked.

"No," answered Jess. "It's weird not being the only person in my room added to the fact that you're my boyfriend and mum let you sleep on the floor in my room."

"I thought she would have sent me to the guest room," said Chris.

"There three guests rooms here. A twin which is Sara and AJ's room. Then mum and dad in the other – which used to be mum's old room and then this one," answered Jess.

"So what do you do when you can't sleep?" asked Chris.

"I read. You?" asked Jess.

"I play my guitar," answered Chris. "Sometimes I just lie there thinking."
"About?" asked Jess.

"You," answered Chris.

"Before me?" asked Jess.

"I can't remember," answered Chris.

Jessica sat up.

"Chris can I ask you a question?" she asked.
"You just did," laughed Chris.

"Ha, ha funny," answered Jess.

"Yes of course you can ask me anything you want," answered Chris.

"Why are you dating Alexis?" asked Jess.

There was silence for a moment.

"My parents," answered Chris.

"Wow you really never say no," said Jess. "So did your parents say one day this is Alexis Bender your dating her it's good publicity?"

"Pretty much," answered Chris. "She's not the kind of girl I ever thought I'd see myself with. Well I never thought of girl I see myself with but she was one I thought I'd never even be friends with. All these rules and I mean I have friendship rules that work favours for Stubby. But Alexis has rules about touching her chin when she's sad or complimenting her every time I see her. Or to kiss her in the middle of her cheek or to allow the paparazzi to be on every date or outing."

"Well I'm not an expert at this dating thing but that doesn't sound like a healthy relationship to me," answered Jess.

"What do you think a healthy relationship should be?" asked Chris.

"Give and take," answered Jess. "There's two people in a relationship and it should be about what both people want.

"Well I'd say your pretty decent at this dating thing," answered Chris.

"I know how to be in a relationship from books, movies and my parents," answered Jess.

"You've never been in a relationship?" asked Chris, sitting up. "No one's ever asked you out?"
"Nope I mean yeah they have but that was because someone but them up to it to stand me up," answered Jess.

"You're the nicest girl I have ever met why would someone do that?" asked Chris.

"I don't know," answered Jess, her voice taking a sad tone.

There was shuffling from where Chris was on and then the bed shifted as he sat on it and pulled Jess into his arms.

"Whatever people say to you there wrong. You are an amazing girl. I've only know you for a week and I already know that. You're awesome and you shouldn't let anyone get you down," said Chris.

That sentence was all it took for Jess to break down and tell Chris everything that happened at school when she had finished she was still in tears and Chris was livid.

"There all jerks," said Chris. "When you go back to school. You think you have nine months and you are out of there. You think of me and you call me or text me whenever you need to."

"Promise," said Jessica, her voice cracking.

"Now all this crying as got to have you exhausted so why don't you try and get some sleep," whispered Chris.

Jess nodded against his chest her hands clutching his t-shirt.

"Can you stay here till I fall asleep?" she asked.

"Of course I can," whispered Chris, dropping a kiss on her head.

He did stay there until she fell asleep but then so did he and he was still there when the alarm rang at five the next morning.
