Chapter 11
A Blood Thirsty Witch
The castle seem suitable for a proper witch. The thing was, nobody thought that the castle actually belong to a witch. It was filled with elegance and beauty inside and out. There was a throne in the middle of the mainroom befitting a queen. With a couple of seats placed each side of the large chair.
There were two figures that sat in their assigned seats as they waited for their leader to return.
"I wonder what Lady Esmeralda is up to right now," spoke a young witch who appeared to be in her early 20s. She wore a black and yellow dress with a yellow ruffle scarf around her neck. She had black and yellow stripe stockings on with black short boots with yellow heels. Her witch hat was black with a yellow belt wrap around it. Her hair was a yellowish blond ruffle hair, and her eyes were golden. "She's been a very bizzzy bee lately."
Opposite of her stood a man with short black hair and a short beard, who wore a fancy white dress shirt and a black vest along with some black pants, and a pair of brown dress shoes.
"Indeed, she has been," the man said folding his hands. "She's been quite occupied since she join the DWMA as their new councillor."
"And to think she was gonna allow us to take any action," the young witch pouted as she folded her arms in disappointment. "I was hoping she would get me a promotion or something in that school. Like being the new magic teacher, with that I could've been the academy's first witch professor!"
"I highly doubt that they would hire someone of your age to be a teacher Melissa," the man said.
"Sure they would Charles," Melissa said putting her hands on her hips while lifting her chin up in a confident posture. "All I have to do is lie about my age and tell them I just look younger. Lots of young people have done it in order to get a job."
"You are one simpleton woman," Charles said as he shook his head in disapproval.
"Hey!" Melissa barked. "I'm not a simpleton! In fact, what I suggested was actually smart. If anything, I could come up with good maniacal plans if Lady Esmeralda let me."
"I think I know why she wouldn't," Charles said with a smug on his face.
"What was that?!" the bee witch snapped.
Right when the two were about to get into an argument, a dark red and black portal appeared out of nowhere right in the center of the hallway. Out of it came a woman with long brunette hair with her bangs still swept on each side. She wore a long-sleeved black dress that went down to her feet where they were not visible. Part of the chest bone area was revealed, showing a decent amount of cleavage. Underneath the gown was a pair of dark red high heel pumps. Her nails were long and painted red.
She had a stern look on her face, as if she didn't wanna hear any petty complaints. The two of her servants sat back on their seats and pretend that nothing happened.
"W-Welcome back Lady Esmeralda." Melissa said startled by her mistress' expression. The last thing she wants to do is disappoint someone as scary as the vampire witch.
"M'lady," Charles said as he placed his hand on his chest and bowed his head in respect.
"I expect you two been in proper behavior during my absence." Esmeralda said as she walk towards her thrown.
"Of course," Melissa said in a cheerfully facade. "It's not like we were having an argument if that's what your thinking." Realising what she just said, the bee witch covered her mouth as if it had a mind of its own.
Charles just smack his forehead in disbelief. This witch was truly an idiot. Why did he had to put with this wrenched dumb blonde?
The tall brunette woman ignored her servants and sat down on her large elegant chair. She reached out her hand as a aura of red and black swirled around her thin fingers, and appeared a glass filled with red wine. Or so it appeared to be.
"I knew you two couldn't remain silent for at least five minutes," Esmeralda said before taking a sip of her wine. "But, I'll let you off with a warning this time. There's something that needs to be discussed."
"What that's lady Esmeralda?" Charles placed his hand underneath his chin with a peak of curiosity.
The vampire witch gently tilted her glass back and forth watching the red-colored liquid splash in mini waves inside.
"As you already know, the academy has reopen its doors after being restructured from the battle with Asura, " Esmeralda traced her finger on the circle edges on her glass. "As of now, Lord Death is gathering more students into his school, and has hired more guards and security to keep track of any new threats."
"Of course we have," Melissa nodded. "Everybody and their mothers are aware of that."
"Now that I've been hired has the school's new councilor, I've took the advantages of testing the student's emotions as part of my experiment," Esmeralda said still fiddling with her glass. "The study of the humans, it has been my only desire to learn about them and their feelings. How they can be so easily driven to madness, it something that's been in my mind for years now. And I can finally do all this research without any obstacles standing in my way."
"Yes, m'lady," Charles nodded. "We know that was your longest dream for centuries. But you do realize that the madness is a very difficult substance to study without getting infected."
Esmeralda let a devilish smirk curled in the corner of her mouth. "Oh, I wouldn't be too sure about that," she took another sip of her sweet thick wine. "There was another witch who once study the madness a while ago."
Melissa began to lifted her head as she got an awareness of who Esmeralda was speaking of. "Don't tell me you mean Medusa Gorgon."
"The snake witch," Charles stated.
"Correct," Esmeralda confirmed. "She was once the academy's nurse and did her own personal research on the madness. I figured I would follow in her footsteps to show my gratitude for her. In case you didn't know me and her were close companions a long time ago."
"WHAT?!" the bee witch yelp puzzled. "You two actually knew each other before?!"
"That's right," Esmeralda replied. "It was back centuries ago. We used to work together as a duo, both of us were misunderstood by society because of our identities as witches. Of course back then witches were always misunderstood, people thought that witches were nothing but vulgar creatures that needed to be put down."
Melissa and Charles notice the pain in Esmeralda voice as she spoke her last sentence. Was the fearful vampire witch starting to get emotional? This was something they never saw before in their mistress. She was always so scary and demeaning, yet this was a new side of her they had yet to experience.
Esmeralda shook off the memories of her painful past and continued on. "But that's what gave me the idea to research those despicable creatures. I grew great interest as to what made humans the way they are, if anything they're just pigs in human clothing that need to be disciplined. Makes me even wonder if it's the madness that makes them into monsters."
"Maybe so," Melissa said as she folded her arms and crossed her legs. "They do say that the madness can make a person lose their mind, and cause them to do things out of their control."
"It's like a mental illness," Charles added. "It also can cause others to see allusions that aren't really there.
That was true, the madness can mess with a being's mind. It can even make them feel unease, and put them in their most greatest fear. Such mild behavior caused by a substance. Humans may be despicable creatures but, when they succumb to the madness is actually very...beautiful. Seeing a normal person transform into a monster was so amazing.
It was definitely something worth testing. But she needed to create her own madness substance. Which wasn't a problem since everything was already plan out.
"No need to worry," Esmeralda assured. "I've been one step ahead. Everything will go according my plan. I've already have the perfect test subject."
"Who is this test subject of which you speak of M'lady?" Charles asked.
Esmeralda gave a maniacal smirk as the red wine oozed from her mouth. "A young girl named Ayumi Kimura. She's one of the new students in the school, and she seem to have some sort of mental illness."
"What kind of mental illness?" Melissa asked.
"Some kind of illness that she had since birth," Esmeralda stated before taking another sip of her wine. "Though, she seem to be able to hold it back. If anything she just seems like a normal girl, but that's because someone was able to tamed that illness of hers."
"Who?" Charles asked once more.
"You may or may not be familiar with her," the vampire witch said while looking into her reflection in the red drink. "But the person who has been taming Ayumi, is none other than the scythe meister, Maka Albarn."
Melissa and Charles both jump in their seats when they heard that name. As if the name belong to an old enemy of theirs, or even a kishin for that matter.
"You mean the girl that defeated Medusa?!" Charles asked in horror.
"Correct," Esmeralda nodded. "She used the technique known as 'genie hunter' that killed off Medusa's soul without harming the child she was possessing."
"That power can only rid those of evil," Melissa said as she remembered the time the she witness someone using the same technique. "I've seen other scythe meisters use it before. Thank Death I'm not afflicted with evil, even though I secretly am."
"Indeed, this girl has an incredible power," Esmeralda put her hand on her chin. "It seems as if she's using some sort of anti-madness wavelength on Ayumi."
"Wait," Charles interrupted. "Forgive me for intruding m'lady, but isn't the anti-madness only affective to those who are afflicted with the madness?"
There was a moment of silence that filled the castle, as if it was empty.
"That's true," Esmeralda said with an emotionless expression, that idea didn't surprise her the slightest.
"But wouldn't that mean Ayumi is afflicted with the madness?" Melissa asked.
This was something new that not even Lord Death thought of. If he looked into Ayum'si soul he would've figure that something was incredibly wrong with the poor girl. But, he never even bother seeing as if she was just a innocent girl with a normal mental problem.
"It's possible," Esmeralda thought. "I won't deny it for sure, however I can't confirm it yet either."
She knew it could be a possibility that the Battle Axe girl might have some disease that could have a connection to the madness. But it was still not affirmative yet, she still need to dig deeper into Ayumi mentally during the appointments that were yet to come.
"I wouldn't jump into conclusions," Esmeralda stated while still shaking her cup. "Honestly, it does seem rather interesting to investigate on the matter. But it won't be established until further notice."
Esmeralda gulped up the last of her red wine, before continuing her discussion.
"For now, we should focus on the next test subject for the madness," she annouced
"Your going to continue where Medusa left off?" Melissa asked.
"But of course," the vampire witch said as she folded her hands. "She has help me out in the past, so in return I'll finish the experiment she was working on. I own it to her."
Now that she was of Crona being a failed geaunie pig, the vampire witch made certain that the next experiment of the madness will be the best yet to come. The thought of it made her smile with great pleasure to the fact that she will be of service to the late Medusa Gorgon.
"But who will be the test subject this time?" Charles asked.
Esmeralda placed her hand the small bump on her stomach. "It's right here."
A/N: In case your wondering, yes Esmeralda is pregnant. One another thing, I didn't like how the anime nor the manga never took the time to give Medusa a backstory. I mean Acrahne got a bit of history, but for Medusa not so much. They never gave us an explanation as to why she was evil besides just being a witch. I had a theory that maybe she was neglected by her parents while Acrahne got all the attention. That would explain why she mistreated Crona because she didn't know how to mother a child, the same way her parents treated her.
Also the fact that Acrahne has a large castle and a group of henchmen while Medusa has a small one and only a few assistance.
Let me know what you think. And to put it out there, I'm going to only be reading the manga of Soul Eater since the anime was too short. And since this story is going continue off the anime, I going add some influence mostly from manga as such.
