The Ministry had banned any unauthorised visitors to the Hospital Wing, so Madam Pomfrey had insubordinately set up beds for the few sick pupils in the corridors outside of Umbridge's office, as a form of protest. After some very heated arguments, Lily had been hauled off for questioning, Remus had been sent away, and James was pacing up and down the Hospital Wing agitatedly.
Harry was sat up in bed, watching his father walk up and down, almost hungrily, never taking his eyes off him. It was like he was trying to drink in the sight of him.
"Are you…" Harry went to say something, then decided against it. James stopped, looking at him, sighed, and went to sit on the edge of his bed.
"You all right, Harry?"
"Where's Mu- where's…where is…" He didn't seem to know what to call Lily.
"Lily's being questioned by some of the Ministry twats. She should be down any minute."
"Okay," Harry said, twisting his hands in his sheets tightly.
James smiled tiredly at him, eyes creased with concern. "I'm sure there's a lot we've missed…years of it...and I don't expect you to explain it at once- take as long as you need. But if there's anything you want to talk about, or say urgently, now's definitely a good time, I guess."
Harry didn't hesitate for a moment. "The Dursleys."
"Lily's sister?" James frowned, confused. "What about her?"
"Didn't Sirius tell you I'm staying with them?"
James went several different colours in the space of a few seconds.
"What?"
"I've been living with them since the night you…you know…died."
"What?" James looked like he couldn't believe what he was hearing.
"Well Sirius was in Azkaban-
"But…you were supposed to go to Remus if anything happened to Sirius-"
"Dumbledore gave me to the Dursleys-"
"No, that wasn't how it was supposed to happen!" He was getting frustrated now.
"The only reason I mentioned it was because I don't want to stay with them anymore, but if it's not possible then I'm used to them, and if it is then great, so we don't have to talk about it anymore."
"What did…don't tell me they…were they alright with you?"
"They're fine." Harry said smoothly, but his eyes flicked to the left and he brushed his hair out of his face. James narrowed his eyes and watched the motion shrewdly, then let out a huge sigh.
"What are they really like? Because I've met them before, and they weren't exactly nice-"
"I said that they're fine." Harry insisted, pushing his hair out of his face.
"You do the same thing as Lily when you're lying." James folded his arms.
"The Dursleys are fine, I'd just rather live with you and…you know, but I understand if I can't, or it's not possible, or you don't want me to, I don't mind." Harry said confidently, shoving his hair out of the way.
James softened.
"Harry…you're our son…of course we want you to live with us…of course you can leave the Dursleys…I'm your Dad, I…" Harry's father fiercely blinked back sudden tears. "I'm just…I'm just sorry we trusted the wrong person, I'm sorry we left you, I'm sorry we missed…all of this. I'm sorry, Harry.
And I know this is super weird for you, and you probably don't want us to be all overprotective and parent-y straight away, and I get that, we're practically strangers to you, but…"
He furiously wiped his eyes. "We're here for you. I'm here for you. Of course you can leave the Dursleys. Of course. The Ministry are bound to kick us out either today or tomorrow, so I'm sure your lovely Headmistress will be happy to let you leave with us. We could go to my mum's old house, and Sirius could come, and Remus, if you wanted…I don't know about the Order, if I'm being honest, it was led by Dumbledore so probably will fall apart with his…betrayal, but there are people there we know, we have friends, and I mean, now Lily and I are back we can clear Sirius name, we can get a warrant out for…that rat's arrest, we can…if you want."
Harry was stunned.
He'd dreamed about a moment like this when he was small, but as he grew older the dream faded and reality set in. He'd just about come to terms with his parents' deaths, accepted Sirius' fate, had been sort of excited about the Order, and now all of those things had suddenly all been destroyed.
There was a feeling in his chest, excitement. He was hopeful. He was excited.
He was happy.
James took his prolonged silence as a negative and instantly backed up, literally taking a few steps away from the bed. "Or of course, not, we could give you your space, we could leave you alone for a while, if that's also want you want, there's not, that's fine too-"
"No." Harry burst out.
"No" His father was concerned.
"No." Harry repeated. "I want to come with you. I want to leave. I want…I want that. Please."
James' face broke out into a massive smile.
"Great! That's great!"
He held out his arms, then shuffled awkwardly. "Um…can I…?"
Harry moved forward on instinct, and James wrapped strong arms around him. They stayed like it for a minute, Harry with his eyes closed, fighting the urge to cry.
They jumped apart as the Hospital Wing door opened and Lily stormed in, looking irritated. That irritation vanished, though, as she laid her emerald green eyes on her husband and her son. James sprang up, worry etched across his face. "What happened? Are you alright?"
She was vaguely disgruntled. "That woman is a bitch."
"Yeah, just a bit."
Harry's mother smiled tiredly at him and sat down on the edge of his bed. "She wants us out, James."
James' eyes darted quickly to Harry, and Harry nodded.
"Then Harry's coming too."
Lily's face split in a beautiful, dazzling, excited smile.
"Oh sweetheart! That's wonderful!" She swept him up in a hug without thinking. "Oh, I'm so glad."
"Me too." Harry mumbled against her shoulder.
James grinned as he watched them, then his face hardened as he seemed to remember something.
"Did you know he's been staying with the Dursleys, Lil?
There was a second of icy silence, then Lily spoke.
"What?"
I know, I know, I'm sorry it's been ages. I hope you liked it?
Let me know what you thought!
Thanks,
