As the doctor shooed the family out the room, he was already starting to make plans. He needed to brew a potion when he came back home, but he wasn't sure if he had all the ingredients he needed. He might have to stop by that little potions store on the way home. Plus some of the ingredients had to be fresh for the potion to work properly.

Leaning over the sprawled out body he let his hand trail across her face.

Ahhh, such soft skin. Leaning down even further he brought his lips into contact with her overheated skin. His tongue came out to play, licking along her cheek, catching a good solid taste of her and it set his blood to boiling. Stepping back to try and cool it down, he thought on what he needed to do. The pill would only last another 3 or 4 hours at most and then he couldn't be near her. But it would be infinitely easier to place a seal on her memories of her previous mate now than it would be when she wasn't weakened by the fever. But that could be only the first step. The effects of the mating mark wouldn't simply vanish just because she doesn't remember the demon. Therefore the potion was needed. It would counteract the negative effects of their now permanently separated situation and bolster her Miko abilities on warding off her self-destructive impulses. He would need to make the potion into pills and have her take them every few hours if necessary. And judging by the powerful aura surrounding the mark itself, the potion wouldn't help for long. The only way to end its effects completely was for someone to remark her. Judging by the scent still on her, something vaguely familiar to him, a dog demon had marked her. And hell would freeze over before a Cat demon would let a dog demon keep such a prize, even in death.

But to be quiet honest he wasn't sure how a demon had kept a mate of this power to himself for any amount of time. Sure they didn't all get along, but gossip was always rampant about who was with who and who had taken human or demon mates. Sure dog demons were exceptionally reclusive but a mate of this power would have attracted unwanted attention long before now. He was going to have to keep her on the Miko power suppressant meds till she learned or rather was well enough to keep it in check herself. He had no desire to fight other demons over this prize. Cats were not known for their battle prowess, but rather as excellent strategists and behind the scene planners.

Smoothing back her hair once more he turned around and headed back downstairs. In the sitting room he found the family. They all jumped as he approached.

"Please, sit down. We have a few things to discuss before I can do anything further for your daughter."

Mrs. Higurashi felt a cold hand wrap itself around her heart. It was never good when doctors wanted to talk to you before doing something.

"It would seem that something in your daughter's past has caused her to have a near fatal collapse. It is still exceedingly dangerous for her, but the medication I need to give her will only work in conjunction to some hypnosis... The events, which caused this shock, must be locked away inside her mind. Otherwise she might have a relapse."

Giving the family a moment for his information to sink in, he had to congratulate himself on his good cover up story. Sure most of it was true in a weird twisted way and he wasn't going to tell them that he needed her to forget her previous mate so she would not object to his marking her. But it all sounded rather logical. The younger brother was giving him a suspicious stare, so he quickly spoke up again.

"If you agree to this I will leave quickly to go and bring the medication and my things for the hypnosis session for when she wakes."

The mother hesitated and looked to the old man, but a timely moan could be heard from the girl even from here and the women quickly nodded her agreement.

"Then I will take my leave. Until I return you should give her one of these every 3 hours."

He handed over the little bottle and turned to leave.

Just as the doctor predicted. Kagome was feeling much better today than she had yesterday when she finally woke up. The first thing she saw as she opened her eyes was a ray of light tilting in through the window and lighting up her desk. The pretty sparkle of soft golds kept her interest till a face appeared in her line of sight.

"You're finally awake! Your family was all very worried." The face spread a smile. It was a beautiful smile that seemed to soften the hard angular planes of his face. It was unfortunately not a face she recognized.

"Who are you?"

Her voice came out all hoarse. The sound scratched at her throat and made her cough. Immediately the face sprouted a hand and in the hand was a glass of water that he held to her lips. She carefully sipped the water and studied him again. He was a handsome man but something about him was nagging at her. It wasn't that there was anything wrong, but something was just off. As she started to stretch her Miko senses to "feel" him, she let out an exclamation of startle. Where there should have been a vast pool of energy inside her she met with nothing.

The man gave her a small lopsided smile.

"Don't worry! It's only temporary. It was kind of difficult to treat you otherwise."

As his words penetrated her confusion another gasp was pulled from her.

"Youkai!"

He laughed. It was a pleasant laugh. Deep and manly. It rumbled in his chest and helped her to calm down and relax. Noticing for the first time his white doctor's coat she asked

"Was I very sick?"

His smile vanished and he a frown took its place.

"You nearly died."

the solemn way he said it made a shiver run down her spine.

"What happened?"

"You suffered a shock and your systems were trying to shut down."

It wasn't a complete lie. She had obviously suffered a shock at the death of her mate and she mad been trying to kill herself.

"You don't remember?" That was the all important question. He wasn't sure if his seal had stuck. She had been more resistant than usual. Plus it would have to be renewed regularly if it had worked at all.

But seeing the scrunching up of her face allowed his heart beat to slow down. She obviously didn't remember anything. The shake of her head only confirmed it.

"Don't worry though. You're all better now."

And it was true, Kagome was herself again. Her friends were informed of her memory lose due to one of her sicknesses. Nobody questioned it. They were all well versed with how weak Kagome's body was. When she returned to school they fawned over her, trying to make her feel as comfortable with them as possible.

The doctor became a rather frequent visitor. Always "just to check up" and if the family felt strange at the complete and utterly amazing healing of Kagome they shoved it to the side, just glad to have her there and smiling again. But none of them could quite forget the sight of her lifeless body at the bottom of the well. That being the case they were loath to bring up anything about her adventures in Feudal Japan. As the days turned to weeks and life fell into a sort of rhythm, a strong foreboding itch started at the back of Souta's head. Something was about to go very wrong.
