Chapter: 2. Check-up and Progress

"Reid?" He heard a familiar female voice ask from behind him. He glanced up from the mass of charts in his left hand, and the pen poised in his other hand.

"Prentiss?" He asked, turning around to face his old colleague and friend. "What are you doing here?" He asked, mentally checking her over, his eyes running down her body. She closed the two-metre gap between them with a limp. He frowned, his concerned eyes flicking between her right leg and face.

"A victim was brought here, I'm here to collect his personal effects."She replied. "And I thought I'd have my check-up while I'm here." She added at the disbelief, clear in his eyes.

"Just go to Exam 2." He said, nodding towards two doors, diagonal from them, that had plaques at eye level, identifying them as two of the Exam rooms.

"I'll be right with you." He added, holding up the pile of charts still in his hand for her to see. She nodded and he watched as she limped toward the left of the two doors. As soon as the door closed behind her, Reid turned back to the nurse he'd been talking with before Prentiss interrupted.

"Old friend." He said, in reply to her raised eyebrow and unasked question. She nodded.

"You also have to sign Mr. Jefferies discharge papers." The nurse, Jamie, said handing him yet another chart. "Chest infection." She added, as he flicked through the chart. He nodded and signed the bottom of the chart, before handing it back to her.

"I'm going to do her check-up now if there's nothing else." Reid said, gathering all the charts into one manageable pile.

"Want me to start a chart?" Jamie asked, glancing at the door for Exam 2. Reid shook his head.

"I can do it." He said, reaching over to grab a new chart. "Thanks anyway. Page me if anything happens while I'm gone." He said. He smiled weakly at her, before walking to the door. He knocked quietly before he entered. Prentiss looked up from the bed she was sitting on, her legs swinging off the side. He pulled the door close behind him, and wrote her name at the top of the new chart as he walked over to her.

"Enjoying being a doctor?" She asked, as Reid finished filling in details on her chart. He glanced up and nodded as he turned back to the chart in his hand.

"Was it Morgan that sent you?" Reid asked, leaning over and pulling a stool on wheels over. Her eyebrows creased and she bit her lip. She shook her head. He raised an eyebrow and waited. Finally, she sighed.

"Okay, it was Hotch." She said. Reid leant back slightly and rolled his eyes. "Hey, you haven't called. Haven't even sent an email. Haven't told us how you're going. You only talk to Morgan nowadays, and only briefly. He's worried about you. We all are." She added.

"That doesn't mean you have to fake needing a check-up to come and check up on me."He said.

"I really do need a check-up." She said in a small voice. He asked her to press down on his hand, like pressing down on the gas and she complied. He wrote something on the chart, before checking her reflexes.

"Prentiss, I have your charts and medical records. You don't need a check-up for another week or so." He said. "And what happened?" He added, standing up and walking over to a counter covered in medical supplies. He crossed his arms and leant against it. Prentiss sighed again.

"Hotch and I were in a car crash." She finally replied, realising her teeth's grip on her bottom lip. Reid straightened slightly. "We're fine. Hotch is fine." Reid relaxed slightly.

There was a knock at the door.

"Yes?" Reid asked, looking at the door. Nurse Jamie opened the door slightly and Reid straightened as she walked over to him.

"Dr. Legaspi asked if you got sign for emergency surgery." She said, holding out a clipboard. Reid took the clipboard and quickly read it over before signing it at the bottom. "Do you need her old chart?" Nurse Jamie asked, taking the clipboard back. Reid nodded.

"Emily Prentiss. And could you also get me the medical records of an Aaron Hotchner." He said, writing the names down on a piece of paper for her. She nodded and took the piece of paper, before leaving the room, closing the door firmly behind her.

"Reid, he's fine." Prentiss said, carefully watching Reid as he leant against the counter again.

"I don't tell you how I'm doing?" He asked. "I don't recall getting a message that you and Hotch were in a car crash." He said.

"We didn't want to worry you." She replied, her eyes following him as he walked towards the door.

"My friends are in a car crash and you don't tell me because you don't want to worry me?" He asked. He shook is head. "I'm sorry, Prentiss. It's just not good enough. Your leg's fine." He added.

She watched, sighing, as Reid left the small room, closing the door behind him.

She was getting up when her phone vibrated. She unclipped it from her belt and hit the answer call button when she glanced at the Caller I.D to realise it was Hotch.

"Prentiss, you still at the hospital?" Hotch asked, in way of a greeting.

"Yes." She replied. "About to leave." She added, glancing at the door Reid had just disappeared through.

"Don't. We've got a survivor. He's being brought to the hospital you're in." Hotch said. Prentiss nodded, and immediately strode toward the door.

"I'm on it. I'll call you when I get some news." She said, flipping her phone close and hooking it back on her belt. She opened the door and glanced around, before quickly walking towards the centre of the Emergency Room, the Nurse's station.

"Excuse me, have you seen Dr. Reid?" She asked a nurse as she walked up to the large desk.

"He's prepping for a trauma. He's in Trauma 1." The male nurse replied, pointing to a room, people bustling through the swing doors. She swiftly walked to the doors, hoping to catch Reid before the ambulance arrived with their victim.

"Reid!" She called out, finding him in the trauma room, organising some drawers to the side. He glanced up at her, before turning his attention back to the drawers.

"Prentiss just go. We've got a trauma coming in." He said. She flinched, hurt by the words. She took a deep breath.

"I know. He's a victim of our UnSub." She said. Another doctor, a younger looking one, frowned and looked at her.

"UnSub?" He asked, glancing between the two of the them.

"Unknown Subject." Reid swiftly replied, handing him a box. "Central line. Give it to Jacque." He instructed. The doctor glanced at Reid and Prentiss, before nodding and walking over to a Nurse standing next to the gurney.

"Prentiss you'll have to wait in the waiting room. I'll get someone to get you when he's stabilised." He said. She nodded and glanced at her feet, before looking back up at him.

"What happened Reid?" She asked. "Why won't you talk to any of us?" He stiffened.

"Now is not the time, nor place." He coldly answered, his back still turned to her. She licked her bottom lip, and nodded. She felt self-conscious for a second, and realised the nurses and other doctors were watching.

"Fine." She said. "But since you worked on the victim I'll need to talk to you later." She said, before spinning around and walking out of the room, toward the direction where the waiting room was.

"Something you want to tell us, Doc?" The doctor from before, John Daniels, asked. Reid glanced at him and finally stepped away from the drawers.

"Not particularly." Reid replied, as they heard the hospital entrance doors burst open, with the sound of the gurney rolling in and people talking loudly, over the top of each other.

"Let's just save him first." Reid added, as the gurney finally rolled into the room, and the paramedics informed them of their vitals.

"Whatever you say Doc."
