"Dr. Reid?"
Reid looked up from the mass collection of charts he had piled on the desk he was sitting at, to the owner of the voice, Nurse Jamie.
"Yes, Jamie?" He asked, quickly signing the bottom of the chart he now held open, before putting it on the right pile, the signed piled.
"There's some FBI Agents here to see you." She replied. He took a deep breath and closed his eyes for a second. "I can tell them to come back another day." She said hesitantly, watching him.
"No, no. It's fine." He said, standing. "It gets me away from charts." He said, smiling. She nodded.
"They're in the waiting room." She said, before smiling and walking back to the nurse's station. He followed her with his eyes for a second. He glanced back at the pile of charts and gathered the signed charts under his left arm.
The nurse's station was a large desk shaped like a stretched backwards E, without the middle stick. Charts and medical records were kept here. The back line of the E was a wall, with a whiteboard hung on it, telling which patients were in which rooms, and their medical problems.
"So, I'm thinking red interior?" Dr. John Daniels asked, leaning against the Nurse's station, flicking through a car magazine.
"Don't you have patients?" Reid asked, walking up to the Nurse's station. He glanced up, and the board.
"Nope. Thinking of buying a car." He replied, continuing flicking through the magazine.
"Dan, you're a resident. You don't have enough money for a flash car." Reid laughed, walking around to stand next to Daniels.
"Yeah, well, it's fun to dream while I'm waiting for something to do." He said, grinning. Nurse Jamie, standing on the other side of Daniels, laughed.
"I reckon beige or tan." Jamie replied, crossing to the other inside side of the station with a pile of charts.
"You can start with filing these charts." Reid said, holding out his pile of signed charts. Daniels laughed.
"Yeah, right." He said, as Jamie leant across Daniels and took the charts.
"Dr. Reid, we wouldn't want him to push himself." She laughed. Reid grinned.
"Reid?" The three of them glanced up, and Reid frowned when he saw Prentiss standing on the other side of the station. "Would we be able to talk to you now?" She asked. Reid sighed and glanced at his two co-workers. Jamie shrugged.
"Care to introduce us?" Daniels asked grinning. Jamie reached over and smacked him across the back of the head. "Ow." He groaned, rubbing the back of his head.
"Serves yourself right." She said. "Reid, I think your friends are waiting." She added, nodding towards an impatient looking Prentiss.
"Actually." Reid said, straightening up. "Dan, you worked on that last trauma didn't you?" He asked. Daniels frowned and nodded slowly.
"Multiply stab wounds to the lower abdomen? Yeah." He replied.
"Come on. There's someone I want to introduce you to." Reid said, walking over to the near-empty waiting room, where Prentiss was now waiting again.
"Dr. Reid, are you sure that's such a smart idea?" Jamie asked. Daniels poked his tongue out at her.
"So mature." Reid muttered under his breath. Daniels raised his eyebrow at him. "Prentiss?" He asked, walking over to Prentiss. He took a deep breath when he realised Morgan, Rossi and Hotch were there as well.
"All this for you?" Daniels whispered. Reid glared at him.
"Still want to be introduced?" He threatened.
"I was only joking." He replied, shrugging. Reid rolled his eyes and turned back to his old team, who were now standing and watching this with great interest.
"Um, guys, this is Dr. Daniels." Reid said, gesturing to Daniels. "Dan, this is Morgan, Hotch, Rossi and Prentiss." He said, gesturing to each person respectively. Dan nodded to each of them.
"Dr. Daniels also worked on the victim." Reid added, seeing the confusion on their faces. Hotch bit his bottom lip and nodded slightly.
"Is he still alive?" Prentiss asked, breaking the awkward silence.
"Mr. Will suffered from eight stab wounds to his lower abdomen. He suffered extensive damage to his small intestine but he is currently in surgery to repair the damage. He should hopefully make a full recovery." Reid replied. Reid saw Daniels glance at him out of the corner of his eye.
"If all goes well, he should be out of surgery in three-to-four hours." Daniels added.
"Will we be able to talk to him after that?" Hotch asked, keeping his eyes on Reid.
"Depending on his condition, you should be able to talk with him as soon as he wakes." Reid replied.
"Dr. Reid?" Reid glanced up. Jamie was still at the nurse's station. She held up the phone and gestured for Reid to answer it. He nodded, before turning back to the group.
"Sorry. I have a call to take." He replied, nodding and walking over to Jamie and the phone. The group watched in silence as Reid answered the phone. An awkward silence settled over the group.
"So." Daniels said, rocking backwards and forwards on his heels.
"How long have you been working here?" Prentiss asked, smiling politely.
"A year or so. I'm in the second-year of my residency." He replied, glancing at Reid on the phone.
"When did you meet Reid?" Rossi asked, looking around the waiting room. Daniels shifted uncomfortably.
"We met when I was a third-year medical student." He replied.
"Do you know how long it took for him to study to become a doctor?" Hotch asked, as Reid finished his call.
"I'm not entirely sure. If the rumours are right, it only took him just over a year." He shrugged. He glanced over his shoulder as Reid hung up the phone.
"Thank you, Dr. Daniels." Prentiss said as Reid returned.
"Dan, abdominal pain in Exam 2." Reid said, holding out a chart for Daniels. He glanced cautiously between the chart and Reid as he took the chart.
"You owe me." Daniels muttered under his breath as he passed Reid and made his way to Exam 2.
"Hey, I'm helping you get your car, aren't I?" Reid called after him.
His grin disappeared as he turned to his old co-workers.
"Anything else?" Reid asked, glancing at each of his old friends.
Morgan and Rossi were glancing around the waiting room, the former fidgeting nervously. Hotch remained in the same position, arms crossed, legs spread slightly, unblinking. Prentiss stood to the left of him, to the right of Morgan, and was watching Reid carefully, observing the rest of the ER out of the corner of her eyes.
"Did he say anything?" Hotch asked. Reid shook his head.
"He was unconscious when he was brought in." Reid replied, as Jamie appeared beside him.
"Sorry to interrupt." She said, glancing between the four FBI Agents and Reid.
"Um, Jamie this is Rossi, Hotch, Prentiss and Morgan." He said, gesturing to each, respectively, much in the same way as he did with Daniels. "Guys, this is Julie." He added. They nodded and mumbled their hellos.
"Were you working the ER when Mr. Will was brought in?" Morgan asked, crossing his arms across his chest.
"Stab wounds to lower abdomen." Reid whispered. She nodded in recognition.
"Yes, I was. But I was assisting with other patients. Nurse Jacque defiantly worked on the patient." She replied, glancing at Reid.
"Um. Dr. Reid, Dr. Hines wants to know if you've completed those charts." Jamie said, turning to Reid as the group watched.
"Nearly. Halfway through." He replied. "Has the test results on Mrs. Janes come back yet?" He asked in return. Jamie nodded and glanced down at the charts in her hands. She looked through the charts, before pulling the right one out and handing it to him.
"Her white blood count is slightly high." She said.
"Hmm." Reid muttered, reading the test results off the chart. "Present it to Dr. Hines and we'll take action from there." Reid instructed, handing her back the chart. Jamie nodded and made a note on the chart. "And more discharge papers for you." She added, handing
"And more discharge papers for you." "And Dr. Lee's receptionist called." Reid frowned. "There was a complication with Mr. Will's surgery. They'll be an hour longer, at least." She said. She added, handing him a pile of charts. He nodded.
"Is that our victim?" Morgan asked. Reid nodded.
"Sorry. You'll probably have to come back tomorrow to talk to him." He said, glancing at his watch, which read 6:47. "It's getting late now." Hotch nodded.
"Reid, could I talk to you?" Hotch asked. Reid glanced at Jamie, before looking back at Hotch.
"Sure. This way." Reid said, walking past the nurse's station, Hotch following closely behind.
"Reid, is there something wrong?" Hotch asked quietly, as he and Reid walked down the corridors of the ER.
"No." Reid said coldly. "Why?" He asked, signing one of the charts in his new pile of charts.
"Reid, you've barely talked to us since you left the BAU." Hotch said, watching his younger friend carefully.
"Talk? Doesn't sound like you guys do that much anymore anyway." He said. Hotch frowned.
"What?" He asked, as Reid added the now signed chart from the top to the bottom of his pile.
"You and Rossi don't talk outside of the case. You guys didn't know of JJ's separation. I didn't know you and Prentiss were in a car crash." He replied. Hotch stopped, and turned to him and Reid stopped too.
"How'd you know about the car crash?" He asked.
Reid licked his lips.
"Prentiss." He replied. "Why didn't you tell me?" He asked. Hotch shrugged and looked away.
"We didn't think you needed the extra stress since you've started a new career." Hotch replied.
"We?" Reid asked. "You guys decided this behind my back? I work in the ER, didn't you guys think I'd find out eventually?" Reid asked, his voice rising. Hotch took a deep breath.
"Reid, we want to help you but you won't let us in." Hotch said, looking Reid straight in the eyes.
"You guys didn't want to help when I first told you. You guys didn't approve of my career change." Reid said. He started walking and Hotch followed.
"Fine. If you want space-" Hotch said. Reid stopped abruptly and turned to Hotch.
"No, Hotch. I didn't need space. I wanted understanding. And I didn't get that." He said, spinning around and striding off in the direction they walked in. Hotch sighed as he watched Reid walk back to the nurse's station.
"I take it it didn't go well?" Rossi asked, as he and Prentiss walked up to Hotch.
"What gave you that impression?" Hotch asked wearily. He smiled weakly. "Morgan?" He asked. Prentiss and Rossi glanced at each other and smiled.
"Chatting up Reid's nurse friend. Think he might be asking her out on a date." Prentiss replied. Hotch chuckled.
"Come on. Let's get out of here." Rossi said, leading the way down the hallway.
"I'll leave me mobile number with Morgan's nurse just in case something happens before tomorrow morning." Prentiss said, as they reached the nurse's station.
"Um, Jamie?" Prentiss asked, leaning on the nurse's station. The nurse, turned away from Morgan to Prentiss.
"Yes?" She asked as Morgan glared at Prentiss.
"Here's my number. Would you be able to call me if Mr. Will's condition changes before nine tomorrow morning please?" Prentiss asked, leaning over and handing the nurse her card, with her mobile number scribbled on the back in pen.
Jamie nodded and smiled.
"Come on Morgan." Rossi said, walking towards the entrance doors, with Prentiss following closely behind, grinning. Morgan glared at the two of them before following them.
Reid walked over to the nurse's station and signed a chart before handing it to a smiling Jamie.
"Talk to you soon Reid?" Hotch asked, stalling by the nurse's station as the others reached the entrance doors.
"Bye." Reid said, not looking up from the chart he was reading. Hotch looked at the others sadly. Prentiss offered him a weak smile, before following Morgan and Rossi out the doors. Hotch glanced at Reid before following his three colleagues out the entrance doors.
"What's up?" Jamie asked, walking over to Reid and taking the chart out of his hands.
"Nothing." He said, grabbing another chart from the pile on the desk. "What did you think of Morgan?" He asked. She raised her eyebrows at his obvious attempt to change the subject.
"He's a great guy. Nice, funny." She replied. "We might be getting a drink together later in the week." She added. Reid glanced up at her.
"You barely know him." He said. She rolled her eyes.
"Geez, Dr. Reid you sound like my sister." She said. Having met her sister, he grinned.
"It's that such a bad thing?" He asked. She chuckled.
"So are you going to tell me what's wrong?" She asked again.
"Nothing's wrong, Jamie." He replied.
"You've been acting cold since those guys came." She said, reaching out and grabbing the chart from his hands. He leant against the desk, his hands resting on the desk.
"It's none of your business." He tried again. She raised an eyebrow.
"Dr. Reid, what's wrong?" She asked again. He ignored her, grabbing the whole pile of charts, and walking around the nurse's station.
"Where are you going?" She called after him as he started walking down a corridor.
"The on-call room." He yelled back.
She signed and leant against the desk, watching him as he walked away.
