Chapter: 6. Coffee and Surgery
He was standing in the lounge, the hang-out for non-busy nurses and doctors, making himself a coffee at the kitchen in the corner, when they knocked on the door. He placed his coffee on the counter and walked over to the door before opening it.
"Morgan, Prentiss." Reid said, frowning as he glanced between his two ex-colleagues.
"Reid, hi." Prentiss said nervously.
"We came for an update on our victim, man." Morgan said. "One of the nurses said you'd be in here." Reid nodded and opened the door further, stepping aside so Prentiss and Morgan could come in. They both nodded to him as they passed him, walking over to the small table in the middle of the room. Reid walked back over to the kitchen counter, finishing making his coffee. He turned around to face them, sipping his coffee as he watched them.
"You could've inquired at the nurse's station, you know." Reid said, blowing on the coffee to cool it down slightly.
"We know, man. We thought we'd ask you instead." Morgan said, leaning on one the chairs placed near the table.
"Okay." Reid said, nodding.
"Do you know if he's out of surgery yet?" Morgan asked. Reid shrugged.
"I can call and find out." Reid said. "You were only here a few hours ago. Why'd you come back so soon?" He asked, taking a few sips of his coffee, happy with the caffeine hit.
"We need to talk to him. Another victim's been taken." Morgan said. Reid nodded, as the door opened.
"Dr. Cassidy." Reid said, suddenly distracted, looking up at the blonde short-haired women that had just entered the room.
"Hey Dr. Reid." She said. "Just came from Mr. Will's surgery." Reid frowned as she walked over to them.
"I didn't realise you were operating today." He said. She shrugged.
"I wasn't supposed to, but we were short-staffed as usual." She said. Morgan and Prentiss frowned, watching the two doctors.
"Excuse me, is this Mr. Will, our victim?" Morgan asked, turning to Cassidy. She glanced at Reid, who nodded. She turned back to Prentiss and Morgan.
"As you probably know Mr. Will was brought to the ER earlier today, suffering from eight stab wounds to the lower abdomen and extensive damage to his small intestine." Prentiss and Morgan nodded.
"Our greatest worry was that the Abdominal aorta or Common iliac artery would be severed but when we opened him up that wasn't the case." She continued. Reid suppressed a grin at Prentiss and Morgan's slightly confused faces. "We managed to repair most of the damage to the small intestine but there was a complication during the surgery. We discovered the Inferior vena cava was cut and he bled out during the surgery, but we managed to control it. He's now in Recovery, due to be transferred to the ICU." Prentiss and Morgan glanced at Reid, Morgan raising his eyebrows.
"Mr. Will started bleeding during the surgery, but he is now in Recovery and about to be moved to the Intensive Care Unit." Reid translated. Morgan nodded.
"When will we be able to talk to him?" Prentiss asked.
"Our biggest worry now is infection. The next twenty-four hours are crucial. Have either of you had the flu, a cold or any other infection recently?" She asked. Prentiss and Morgan glanced at each other.
"No." They replied. Cassidy glanced at Reid. He shook his head.
"Depending on his condition through the night and when he wakes up, you should be able to talk to him tomorrow around noon." Cassidy said.
"Thank you Doctor." Morgan said. Cassidy smiled and nodded, before turning and leaving the room. Reid watched her leave, as Prentiss and Morgan turned to Reid.
"Have you been taking antibiotics for your leg?" Reid finally asked, breaking the now awkward silence. He missed the comfortable silences the group once shared.
"The doctor I saw didn't think it was necessary." Prentiss finally replied. Reid frowned.
"Well, I'll prescribe some antibiotics just in case." Reid said. Prentiss nodded.
Yet again, an uncomfortable silence settled over the three of them until Morgan's phone vibrated. He glanced at the Caller ID.
"It's Hotch." He said, flipping it open, before putting it on loudspeaker. "Hotch, it's Morgan and Prentiss. We're at the hospital with Reid." Morgan said.
"Any news on our victim?" Hotch asked, as the group watched Morgan's phone, which he now held out.
"Will is now in Recovery. There was a complication with his surgery, but he should recover alright. He's about to be transferred to the ICU." Reid replied.
"There's a secondary crime scene." Hotch said. Prentiss and Morgan frowned at each other.
"Any ideas on where he was attacked then?" Prentiss asked.
"We're working on that now." Hotch replied. "Garcia's also searching for similar unsolved cases." He added.
"Has JJ released the profile to the media yet?" Morgan asked.
"No. We decided to wait for an update on Mr. Will's condition. And we thought there might be holes in the profile, considering we now have a survivor."
"Good idea." Morgan said.
"Reid, would Will have survived if we found him later than we did?" Hotch asked. Reid thought for a second.
"Probably not. His Inferior vena cava was cut. He probably would've died of blood loss." Reid replied. Morgan nodded.
"So obviously our UnSub didn't count on someone finding him so fast." Prentiss said.
"Or he has no medical knowledge." Reid said. Prentiss frowned and tilted her head to the side. "If he had medical knowledge he'd know the rough estimate of time it would take for him to bleed to death." Reid explained. Morgan nodded thoughtfully.
"So that rules out doctors, nurses and med students." Prentiss said. Reid nodded.
"Not as much med students. If it were a med student, they wouldn't have gotten past the first or second year." Reid said.
"I'll tell Garcia. See if she can find any med students that haven't completed their first or second year." Hotch said. "We'll meet you back at the office." He said. The dial tone filled the air, before Morgan flipped his phone shut.
Suddenly, Reid's pager starting beeping and Prentiss and Morgan exchanged glances. He groaned as he looked at the number.
"What is it?" Morgan asked, as Reid started walking towards the door.
"I'm being paged to the ER. 911." Reid called over his shoulder, as he broke into a jog, disappearing out of the room.
