Early the next morning James bounced into the Great Hall filled with joy. He threw himself into the seat next to Sirius and immediately began to fill his plate with sausage, egg and bacon. Remus, Peter and Sirius looked at him with incredulous smiles waiting for the explanation that was sure to come.
"I deserve this hearty breakfast boys!" he eventually pronounced through a mouthful of sausage.
"And why is that dear Prongs?" Sirius asked laughing at his friend.
"She finally succumbed to my immeasurable beauty, wit and intellect," he laughed raucously as dawning replaced confusion on his friends faces.
"No way, mate!"
"I can't believe it!"
"Tell us about it!"
"Well, to be honest boys, it was better than I ever dreamed, she is…just…well…amazing," he stated simply. " It was magical, I'm on top of the world, my life is complete!" James' voice had risen and a few Gryffindor turned to look at him.
"Mate, you sound like a right sap, we're happy for you 'n' all, but tone down the sloppy stuff a bit," Sirius laughed as Remus and Peter rolled around in their seats.
"Whatever," James said giving them a huge grin.
"So, what now?" Peter asked eagerly.
James looked down the table at the red-haired girl finishing a bowl of cereal.
"Now, I will see you lot in Herbology, I have business to attend to," he winked at them and stood up.
"Nah, you mean you've got someone to attend to," Sirius guffawed.
James smacked him lightly on the back of the head and carried on walking away.
He came up behind Lily and marvelled at the ingenious way she had fashioned two quills to pin her hair up. He could hear a snippet of her conversation with Alice.
"I didn't think I ever would, but evidently I do," Lily sighed.
"I think it's cute."
"You would," Lily laughed as Frank took Alice's spare hand.
James took this as his cue and slipped onto the bench beside the red head.
"How are you, this fine morn o' beautiful lady?" James said bowing his head as far as he could without ending up in someone's scrambled egg.
"Good morning James. I'm fine thanks, you?" Lily said quietly giving him a small smile.
"Never better!"
Lily laughed at his delighted expression and began to gather up her books.
"Please fair lady, let me," he said holding out his hands.
"Oh you're too kind fine sir," Lily pretended to swoon as James took her books.
The two of them left the Great Hall laughing and continuing their little charade. James cautiously slipped his hand into Lily's and she clasped his fingers. This tiny gesture was overlooked by almost everyone left eating, however, one pair of dark eyes caught it. Severus Snape clenched his jaw and curled his fists.
Don't be fooled by this happy little chapter, more pain is in store, for these two, before they have their happy ever after…well, until Voldie kills them :D
