Disclaimer: if I owned Harry Potter than I would have made this the plot of the books instead of a fanfic, so I obviously do not.
Chapter Seven: Overheard Whispers
Draco was woken in the middle of the night by a loud whisper.
"Hermione, be quiet, you'll wake them!" Harry was saying to his friend.
Draco relaxed. They were talking to each other, not him. He was just preparing to go back to sleep when he heard the girl say "Well, I can't help it! I'm upset! Why did you let him stay with us, Harry?"
They were talking about him. Draco couldn't go to sleep now. Did they already suspect that he was going to betray them at the first chance he got?
"Hermione, I think it's alright. I'm not saying that I like Malfoy any more than you do, but I think we should give him a chance. Besides, if he ran away from Voldemort like he said he did, then he's in as much danger as we are."
"That's my point! How do we know that his story is true? Isn't it sort of suspicious, Malfoy just showing up!" Hermione asked so loudly that Harry had to shush her again.
"I think it is. Don't you remember how Malfoy was last year? He couldn't kill Dumbledore" Harry asked his friend.
"Yes, last year he was a coward! He never would have run away from You-Know-Who!" Hermione said triumphantly.
Well, they're both right. I couldn't kill Dumbledore and don't want any of this. I can't escape Him either. I can't……. Draco thought.
"Hermione, he obviously came here to join us. Why else would he be here?"
"Who knows the way he thinks, Harry! He could be doing anything, and you won't even listen to me! We have no way of knowing that he is actually working against You-Know-Who." Hermione reminded him.
Draco was growing highly uncomfortable with the conversation. He didn't want to admit it, but the more they talked about what side they thought he was on, the more he wanted Potter to be right. It doesn't matter! He thought. I don't have a choice! I can't just do whatever I want! I have no choice anymore. That time is long gone.
Draco didn't want to listen anymore, fearing that they might unknowingly convince him to turn against the Dark Lord. It's only an act. Draco reminded himself. Helping them is only a way to lure them in. I don't really mean any of it. Not at all.
The last thing he heard Harry whisper before sleep claimed him once more was "He's already filled up his quota of switching sides. He's betrayed us by helping get Death Eaters into the castle, and now he says he's turned against them them as well. How many people can he betray?"
Too many, Potter. I can betray more people than you would ever know. And if Voldemort has his way, than you're next.
Author's Note: So what did you think? I wanted to make it an interesting conversation, but I'm not sure if it was too drabble-ish. Please review!
