The women known as the fat lady sighed. For centuries she had garded the entrence to the gryfindor common room. She had given advice and watched as it was given no thought. She had given as much comfort as she could to fearful first years, been there dearest friend for a minute and been forgoten the next. She had told none of the many night escapedes she had seen, so as not to betray the trust of the children. But even if she had no one would suspect that it was she, the fat lady, who told. No one ever thought of the fat lady... no one ever thought of her.
No one even knew that she had a name. No one knew because they never asked.
So that is why when she saw one more almost crying first year standing before her frame she sighed. She sighed but still she kneald down at her frames end to get nearer to the girl.
"what's the problem then child?"
"I forgot the password" was the answer as the lady had expected.
She wished she could tell the child the password but she couldn't, nore could she simply open without it.
So simply she said " Quidich practice will end soon and they can tell it to you. For now though why don't you sit down and we can have a chat?"
She always asked this (though through out time the wording had changed drasticly if you looked at the origional way she said it) because though they never had she always hoped they would ask her name. She was the only one who knew her name which is a lonely thing, and beacuse no one knew it they called her the fat lady a name that she knew wasn't menevelent but yet still hurt. And so in the hope that someone would ask that someone would call her it and not that painful name, she asked them to sit and talk.
She asked it now more out of habit then anything. Because she had begun to lose hope after all these years in which few have sat and talked and still none have asked.
But this time the girl sat looked up and said " My names Liza, whats yours?"
And with a childs simple question a tear rolled down the lady on the canvases cheek as she answered "my name is...
