Unspoken words
The fighting between James potter and Lily Evans skyrocketed in their fifth year after the lake incident. Lily would never tell James why. She would never say why she started all those fights and publicly humiliated him. She would never say it was because he had taken that one person who had meant the most to her and destroyed him. She remembered the days of when they were young and Sev had been carefree and innocent but then those sweet, light-hearted, happy days had gradually grown dark. James and Sirius had bullied Sev until there was no turning back and only caused him to fall further into the arms of Rosier and Malfoy. She would never tell James that when Sev had called her that name by the lake she had felt as if she had been stabbed a thousand times over, her breathe coming in sharp, painful gasps. She would never tell him that she blamed him for crushing that sweet innocent boy that she had once considered family.
She guarded her silence jealously as she got to know him in their seventh year and found the man he had grown into was someone she could call a friend. The closer they got the more she forgave him. She would never tell him that when she had accepted his invitation to Hogsmeade and Sev had confronted her she had picked chosen James over him. She remembered the day with a piercing clarity that she wished she could forget.
"What the hell lily!" a voice hissed behind her as she walked down the hall, causing her to halt abruptly and spin around, she would know that voice anywhere. Sev stood there, glaring at her with a snarl, but she could see that his anger was a poor mask for the hurt that seemed to radiate off him.
"You said you hated him and would never stoop to his level!" he snarled, moving closer to her, invading her personal space.
"He's grown up Severus" she replied evenly, instantly knowing who he was talking about, he stared at her for a few moments, the silence growing heavy with expectation before his eyes narrowed.
"I suppose I should have seen it coming" he sneered "Potter gets the mudblood slut" and with that parting insult he spun away from her, striding angrily down the hall.
"You made your choice!" she shouted after him, anger welling up inside her at his accusations "You choose your precious Death Eaters and Dark arts over me! I would have stood by you but you made your choice pretty clear that day by the lake, James just made it happen quicker!" she paused, her chest heaving with emotion before speaking again "I choose him Severus, I choose him ever time, he loves me and I.. I love him" she finished staring at him sadly.
"Don't" he choked out, stepping towards her again, before jerking to a halt a few strides from her "Don't you dare look at me with pity, the Dark Lord will rise and your choice will get you killed"
Turning from her with a last disgusted look, he continued down the hallway, his stride jerky with suppressed emotion. She stood there alone, hugging herself as she gasped for breath, her sobs echoing eerily around the empty hallway. Later when James tried to coax out of her what had happened, she wouldn't tell him.
James would never tell Lily that he had felt infinitely guilty for what he had caused down by the lake. He would never tell her that the day he asked her out had been the day that he had ended up in a fistfight with Sirius over her. How she was putting him in danger because of her parentage, how he had changed so much for her that Sirius barley recognised him anymore and he would never tell her that that fight very nearly tore him and Sirius apparent forever. He held his silence that he, along with Remus, had heard everything that had been said between her and Severus that day and he had felt terrible for being the cause of it.
What they would tell each other every day was that what they had was unique. So many people searched for this feeling and they had found it and would fight for it. It wasn't easy, they fought and yelled constantly but at the end of the day they loved each other and would do anything for each other, no matter the price.
