Don't own anything.
"You sure about this, Matt? The Surface is a big and unusual place."
"I'm sure. Besides, the Surface can't be as bad as here."
"I'm not too sure about that, but good luck, friend. I hope you fair well."
"Thank you, Dave."
Dave gave Matt one last look before opening the Gate. "Now remember, the creatures on the Surface don't know much about us. It's best if you don't show yourself in plain sight unless you're either very confident or very stupid. Or in Francis' terms, very suicidal."
Matt nodded as he grabbed his bag. "Papa already lectured me about that. He even bagged some clothes for me."
Dave snorted. "That damn lion… You were always his favorite. 'A lost son', he would even say. Well, farewell, Matt. Watch yourself, ya hear?"
"So this is the Surface, huh? Looks crowded," Matt said to himself as he fully stepped onto the other side of the Gate. The Gate closed, almost catching his tail as he yelped and jumped away from it. Well that was close, he thought as he inspected his tail. Gotta keep focus if I want to survive here.
"Excuse me," a sudden voice called out, startling Matt. "Do you have any change?" Change? Matt looked at the cup in the old man's hand. Oh! Money. "Um, y-yeah. Let me look inside," the young Devil said as he checked his bag. He found the wallet Francis packed for him and gave the old man a twenty, which surprised the guy.
"I-Is something wrong?"
"No, no. It's just…no one has really given me this much. Thank you, mister."
Matt perked up at that. "You're welcome. Um, why has no one given you this much?" The old man sighed and said, "Unfortunately, society has no use for an old geezer like me. I'm just thankful they lessened the beatings." Matt's ears went flat at that.
So there really is no difference after all.
The old man noticed the sudden change in mood. "Oh! I'm sorry. Though, it seems you're fairing well. Keep up the good work and you'll be living the life in no time!"
He'll still cheer me on even though he's miserable? Guess this is the difference.
Matt smiled. "Thank you, sir. I hope you fair well as well." The old man chuckled before thanking him and walked away. It wasn't until the guy disappeared around the corner that Matt realized he was still in his true form.
Finding a body to replicate was proving to be challenging. Everybody knew each other! "Maybe I should've started in a city," Matt muttered to himself. Even though the town he started in was crowded, there were still times when somebody would recognize another. If memory serves right, establishments called it 'regulars'. "Guess I'll fly to cover more ground." Unlike dark creatures, light creatures like Matt can blend in easily to their environment. Invisibility is key to survival.
As he flew around the town, Matt took note of all the colorful flags displaying in front of shops. Wonder what they stand for, he thought as he continued to fly over them. He also took note of how different people dressed from each other. Guess flashy clothes mean higher status. This must be what that old man was talking about.
It was dust when Matt decided to rest for the night. He found a small patch of land still covered in grass and trees in the middle of the town. He made himself a den away from the equipment he saw children playing in earlier. "Hopefully tomorrow I'll find a replicate," the young light creature muttered to himself before yawning. I wonder how other Devils faired living here, was his last thought before passing out from exhaustion.
During his search for a replicate, Matt didn't take notice of all the Devils he passed. Not all of them were light creatures.
Negativity will be ignored. Corrections welcomed.
Anyways, I have another chapter to this story and three new one-shots ready to post this weekend. After those I'll be working on my Fallout stories until November, just to get into the spirit of Fallout 4. Don't know if I worded that right, but that's the plan. I already finished one chapter to a new story (since I have two Fallout stories posted already) and will post it probably next week. I'll do my best to stick to this plan.
Enjoy.
