Sorry for the wait! I've been super duper busy and the only moments I could really do anything about the chapter was in my spare moments which weren't many! I even drew the outlines of What the Jabberwocky was going to look like on the fog of our school bus's window, and I even drew stick-figure Percy fighting it off. ( I got some pretty weird stares for making baby 'Jabberwocky' noises so I hope you appreciate what I go through for you,)
Alright, read on.
Chapter 6 - The Jabberwocky: Percy Jackson
"I'll take first watch."
"I've got this, Seaweed Brain. Just go to bed already," Annabeth says exhaustedly.
I don't blame her, it's been a long day. From the running, avoiding tributes, and the searing hot that's practically cooking us, it's enough to make anyone grumpy.
"You sure?"
Annabeth pushes me into the sleeping bag.
I press my hands against the fabric, "alright, alright..." I chuckle.
Annabeth rolls her eyes and crosses her arms.
Eventually, I fall asleep after telling her to wake me in a couple hours.
xxx
"Percy wake up!" Annabeth's screaming voice jolts me awake. I thrust my trident into my shaking hands. Cheesy, I know grabbing a trident in the Cornucopia, but hey, it looked cool.
"What's wrong?" I whisper fiercely.
She points to a spider that's nearby on log. I almost forgot the fact that they could put anything in the Arena. Which in turn included spiders, the stupid Gamemakers must have done their research on us. It makes me want to punch them for torturing Annabeth in the most simplest way possible. I know about her Arachnophobia and why she has it but other Districts don't. They probably only see it as a really bad fear of spiders or a weakness but it's so much more.
I quickly use my reflexes to jump over and smash the little thing as quickly as possible.
Annabeth takes a deep breath and says 'thanks.'
"You look exhausted," I tell her. "I'll take watch, go to bed."
She nods understandingly and without a word goes into the bag.
I watch her sleep, one because there's nothing better to do and two, she looks stunningly beautiful when she does. The stress melts off her face and her looks happier. Or as happy as you can be in an Arena full of strangers waiting to kill you.
An hour passes by.
Two.
Three.
My eyelids refuse to stay open but somehow, I keep them that way. I try to focus to keep me at bay. I look at the starry night. It's a dark velvet with stars that are dotted across in every direction. For a hologram, it looks pretty good.
Frost creeps onto the ground, I shiver and zip up my jacket while pulling up the hoodie. I keep my trident in my hand and no where else.
Four.
My eyelids are at bay. Maybe if I just rest...I'll feel better...
After my eyes bring closed for a second I snap out of it and whip my head around for signs of anyone else.
I do hear something though: a roar.
For a moment, I'm terrified. It was un-earthly and seemed alien. Annabeth's acute senses are back in a moment as she whips awake.
"What was that?" She asks.
"I don't know,"
We watch the trees for a while waiting for something. If we were in a scary movie right now, this would be the part where the scary music starts building up and gets intense while the audience waits on the edge of seat wondering what's going on.
The tree leaves begin to rustle. I take a step back, and grab my trident. Annabeth grabs her Yankees baseball cap, ( a token from her district, ) and a spear she made herself.
Another roar, it's clear and deifying.
The leaves stop for a moment. We hold our breath.
A creature with leathery black wings, red eyes like flame, a serpentine tail, and a mouth that could chop through an entire tree in a second bursts through the trees. Its hands and feet were enormous, nearly as big as it's head. It's head was at the end of a snake-like neck. It must have had ten rows of teeth all the same size it's claws. Saliva dripped from its jaw making sizzling sounds as they hit the ground. It's growls menacingly then roars so loud, I have to cover my ears so I don't go deaf.
"Annabeth, run!" I shout to her.
We both turn heels and sprint. I stay behind Annabeth and we try to get as far away from it as possible. Just then, the monster reaches out for me to grab but fails so he goes to the next biggest chance: Annabeth. She didn't have the trident to poke him away so the beast kept trying.
The beast scoops her up in its claws the size a small tree. I whip around, it had Annabeth!
"Hold on!" I shout. I try to remember what this closely resembles. Nothing. I can't describe it as nothing. It's black, red eyes, and even wings. It's not a dragon because it's face is too mashed up.
Annabeth puts on her cap, she turns invisible and it confuses whatever this thing is. It opens it's hand and I hear a satisfying, 'thud,' to show she on the ground. Annabeth takes off her cap and runs, it's about to grab her again when I throw a stone at her. It's stupid, and dangerous but it's not paying attention to her anymore.
"Hey ugly!" I shout throwing another stone.
It turns towards me. "Over here!" I yell and start running through the trees, I don't care where I am going. All I know is that the thing is following me and nobody else.
It roars an unearthly growl at me.
I dig in my pocket to find riptide, I must have dropped the trident somewhere. Riptide wasn't my token, but the Gamemakers couldn't figure out why it stayed in my pocket so they didn't have a choice but to leave it there. Fishing it out, I click the cap and the sword comes alive in my hands.
Crucis Rollo grinned, 'How I love being a Gamemaker.'
"Sylvia, can you knock down that tree for me there? Make him stop," Crucis said.
"Sure, captain." She said. She used the Gamemaker technology to make a tree appear in front of the District 4 tribute. A cry was heard on the main screen.
"Oh, somebody dim the lights in that Arena. It shall be so much more scarier if the Tributes can't see the Jaberwocky."
Crucis turned his head towards another Gamemaker. "Atlas, bring all of the tributes together at where District 4 is. Oh, and somebody get the other girl from 4's district with him. I'm getting tired of seeing her run with no direction."
"Got it," said a Gamemaker. "They'll be coming soon now. I'm pushing them together by creating a new type of green fire. Isn't it great?"
"Wonderful! Oh and Sylvia?" Said Crucis.
"Yes, captain?"
"Get the cannons ready, the Capitol is going to be quite entertained."
I break through the rough tree branches, panting for breath, I find none while ripping through the forest. I turn, to see the whatever-it-is gaining speed. I keep jogging. I look for signs of water. I could control water and maybe if I saw some I could battle the monster behind me.
Suddenly, I see seven or nine tributes in front of me, all of them are running with me.
Wait, what?
I try to identify them, there's one I know from District 2, Thorin. Another from District 9, a girl with blonde hair and a man with spiky hair and a trench coat, which much be his token. There's also the couples from districts, 3, 8, 9 3/4, and 12. Also a couple others I don't know. Then I see Annabeth. She's running fast with her blonde curls bobbing behind her. So now what? What's going to happen before eventually we have to stop running?
"JABBERWOCKY!" It roars.
I decide to call the beast by the name it roars when it speaks. Suddenly, the Jaberwocky stretches out it's leathery wings, and takes flight. The tributes watch it descend. A couple of cries of joys are let out by the more stupid tributes, but are stopped dead when the Jaberwocky cuts us off on the other side. Some tributes like the one from 5 and the other from 7 try to run the other way but the Jabewockies serpentine tail whips around and stops them.
It has us completely cut off. The camera's will be getting every second.
The girl from 5 tries to run again but the Jaberwocky grabs her with its claws. It toys with her by continually dropping her and picking her up again. She cries out for help but we all stand dumbstruck.
In a single move, the creature flicks it's wrist and throws the girl up in the air.
"Somebody help me!" She shrieks.
She lands inside the beast mouth. We all shudder as we hear a loud crunch and the gulp of her going down it's throat.
A cannon booms.
I don't think the Hovercrafts aren't going to get her anytime soon.
The Jaberwocky looks at us wondering which one is next. It's snake eyes search the crowd weighting which one would be the best to eat.
The boy from 2 grabs his sword out and stabs the Jaberwockies tail. The rest of us get the idea to attack too.
It's a full out battle. We try to kill the beast but in single whips of its tail, it sends us all back on the ground. Annabeth and I do backflips onto the ground while the tail has us flipped up. I see a chance to escape when the tail is still in the air, I grab Annabeth's hand and start running. The rest of the Tributes follow. Only a couple unlucky tributes get caught in the way out. Long story short, they are now monster chow. Three cannons boom.
We keep running until we see a black lake that stops us dead in our tracks. The other tributes look stressed, but I am not. I could control water. We hear the Jabberwocky growl in the distance and the sound of breaking trees.
I close my eyes and focus on moving the water. I raise my arms and open my eyes to see a wall of water in front of me. I grin, the sweat beads off my brows. I turn my body to see the Jabberwocky has just arrived on the scene. I flick my wrists forward, the wall of water comes in contact with its head and the screams while I try to do as much damage as possible.
"JABBERWOCKY!" It roars again.
I send another wall of water towards it. It tries to fly away from my water but fails, I've grounded it. The other tributes send in their arrows and swords towards it. If we try hard enough, we could bring it down.
The Jabberwocky growls at me.
"Errr... AHHHH!" The growling turns into long and painfully loud roaring.
To send a message, it grabs another tribute by the legs and flings her into its mouth. The boy from her district cries her name.
"ROSE! NO!"
Another cannon booms.
I try to send another wave of water to send it back farther into the jungle. It works, but I can't keep sending these waves. It's tiring me out too quickly.
The man with the trench coat, forcefully takes another tributes sword and without thinking, plunges the sword into its flesh. It's cries with remorse, but to no avail.
"What the heck is it going to take to kill this thing?" I scream.
"Yes, sir, I agree with 4. What is it going to take?" Sylvia asked Crucis.
Crucis chuckled. "Something they don't have."
Sylvia gawked, her brown eyes stared at him. "Sorry, sir?"
"Sylvia have you ever read Lewis Carol's, Through the Looking Glass?"
She shook her head, "I saw the Disney version but they didn't have... That thing." She gestured to the main screen and saw the black vicious monster.
"The Jabberwocky, though deadly is from a nonsense poem. It would only take a Vorpal blade to kill the thing,"
"Are you telling me there's no Vorpal Blade in the arena?"
"Not yet." Crucis smiled a devilish grin. "We shall wait until they are truly desperate."
"Sir, they already are!"
"No they are not! They are only halfway desperate, I want truly desperate."
Needless to say, Crucis was insane.
I send another wave back. The monster has us on the water's edge, then before we know it, we are in the black lake.
I send whips of water flying towards it, hoping it would do something, it did nothing.
With each stroke to fight the Jabberwocky back, my arms refuse to work. The other tributes are losing their fire too. It's not going to be long before we're all eaten by the Jabberwocky.
I wonder how many faces are going to be in the sky tonight, we must have seen it eat at least 5 other people.
The boy from eight throws his sword onto the ground, "this is pointless!"
"No blade of man nor elf could destroy this beast! We must flee!" Cries the boy from 2.
The tributes begin to run.
Crucis groaned. "Now why did they have to do that?" With a sigh, Crucis said unhappily, "I suppose we have to send in the sword."
"How do you want us to do that sir? Beam it in?" Atlas suggested.
"Nah, that's lame." He put a hand to his chin, then his eyes lit pup.
"Style," he said. "Is everything. Sylvia, make Fawkes drop in the sword in a hat!"
"Sir, that doesn't seem logical. We don't even have the bird! It's in District 9 3/4!"
"Curses," mumbled Rollo. "That would have been so cool."
"So... Are we still beaming it in?" Atlas asked.
"If we must," Crucis said wistfully.
My waist is under the water now. I wade through the murky green water, I remember Annabeth, I thrash my head from side to side. Finally, I see her mess of curly blonde hair. I swam as fast as I possible could to her side.
"Where have you been?!" She shouts.
"Fighting monsters, you know, like any other normal day?!" I scream so she can hear me through the splashing water and roaring.
"I'm never letting you take watch again!" Annabeth says.
"I am a great watch-person!" I retort back.
The tribute from District 8, a sandy blonde boy with blue eyes glares at us.
"We're taking a Jabberwocky down right now! So shut up and help us!"
"You shut up!" Annabeth and I shout at the same time.
Just then, we see a flash of light burst through the arena and form a beam in the sky. In the place of the beam once it dissolves, is a sword. The boy from 9 quickly runs to the sword and snatches it. In one quick move, he stabs through the Jabberwocky's flesh. The beast roars in agony and makes a choking sound,
"J-J-Jabberwocky...J-J-Jabbewocky."
"That's for Rose!" Screamed the man.
The beast gives out one last painful wale then sways before finally falling over.
We wait for a moment to see if the beast will move anymore, after a couple quiet seconds I realize that the Gamemakers knew that after the Jabberwocky was dead, we'd all be together. It would be a second bloodbath.
"So now what!?" District 3 shouts into the sky. "Huh?! We played your game, so what now!?"
I whisper to Annabeth that we have to go. She nods, I look to her and grab her hand. She looks at me, I pull us underneath the water, I hear muffled shouting from above but the water mutes most of it. What I can make out is screaming and a lot of vigorous shouting.
Creating an air bubble, I put it around our heads and we kick downwards. I don't know what is happening up there, but whatever it is, it can't be pretty. We swim for a couple moments in silence. A couple minutes later, we remerge onto the other side, probably far from any other tribute.
That night, after we hear the anthem, we see the faces in the sky.
6 deaths.
District 2, Galadriel.
District 3, Tris
District 5, Kendra.
District 7, Eowyén.
District 8, Arthur Pendragon
District 9, Rose Tyler
The Jabberwocky was a close call, and if the Gamemakers can send that in, who knows what else they can do?
I might be shown in the sky before I know it.
