maahy: unfortunately I must leave you in suspense for a while.

The majority of the party was on high spirits as they prepared themselves for a peaceful afternoon, a celebration to Jane's increase of health - Mr. Bingley's words. Elizabeth had slipped subtly out of Collins grasp at the first opportunity. Unfortunately, Darcy didn't have that advantage, Miss. Bingley clung to his arm as if afraid once released he would run for the hills - for once she was correct. He shot a pained look at Bingley who shrugged slightly before helping Jane onto her horse.

His cousin looked on in amusement from his perch on his own horse, laughing quietly as he saw Darcy try several tactics to remove her hold to no avail. Georgiana and Elizabeth was also watching his attempts, each unsure what to do.

"Maybe we should help him?" Elizabeth muttered to her new friend, stifling a laugh more successfully than Richard had been able too. Georgiana nodded but didn't move nor offer any advice on how to achieve that goal. A stable hand led out Beauty, confusing those who had not been informed of the arrangement, Miss. Bingley.

"Why have you brought that one out? How incompetent are you really? Mr and Miss Darcy both have their horses so put that one back this instance." She commanded, releasing Darcy's arm in the process of advancing on the poor stable hand. Seizing his chance he mounted his horse and moved away from Miss. Bingley's horse as to avoid riding alongside her. He watched with interest at how she would take the news. However, the stable hand refused to be intimidated by the woman as he was loyal to her brother and had received instructions from his master at what to expect.

"There is no mistake Miss. Bingley. Mr. Bingley asked for Beauty, not any other horse. Perhaps, you were mistaken on your information." The words spoken softly was like a match to dynamite, the effect slow at first but once lit they explode.

"Charles! What is the meaning of this?" She boomed, startling Georgiana who hadn't expected the rise in volume. Elizabeth put a hand on her friend's shoulder asking if she was alright, before turning her attention to an increasingly looking flustered Miss. Bingley. Georgiana, quickly followed her brothers example and mounted her horse as well, leading her horse so it was standing beside her brothers.

Darcy, she saw was trying very hard to check his laughter as to prevent embarrassment, he was successful unlike their cousin who Darcy told to go and collect himself. Richard smiled slightly, before containing his laughter, noticing the uncomfortable looks on the Bennet sisters faces. The scene that they observed was worrying yet amusing in the same breath.

Mr. Collins, who had seemed to be uncharacteristically quiet since releasing Elizabeth, was trying desperately to get onto his saddle. Each time he tried his short legs couldn't get over the large beast that he was to ride. Georgiana, recognised the animal as one of Bingley's easily agitated horses, she wondered briefly at him allowing Mr. Collins to ride the steed even Mr. Darcy sometimes struggled to control. The thought was quickly pushed aside as Georgiana tried to contain her laughter at the red-faced man who had fallen to the floor for, on her count, was the twelfth time.

"Thank you. I'll be sure to return her in the same condition." Elizabeth told the stable hand quietly enabling him to flee the scene; before he could be punished for something that he had no control over. Miss. Bingley who had been side tracked by Mr. Collins display, turned once again to ask her brother about the horses appearance. Gracefully, Elizabeth mounted the animal after petting beauty's nose for a few moments to acquaint herself with the animal. Darcy watched her become comfortable on the horse, catching each others eye they shared a smile. Miss. Bingley who had noticed the stable hand escaping turned around as Elizabeth finally settled in the saddle.

"Eliza, what are you doing?" She spluttered enraged that the woman was even touching one of Mr. Darcy's horses. Bingley took his chance and mounted his horse, starting to lead Jane away from the large group following the path of the Hurts who had been the first to receive their horses and wisely chose to escape the loud displays of Miss. Bingley.

"Isn't obvious Miss. Bingley? Surely you can not forget, for it was your idea, was it not?" Elizabeth replied, slightly enjoying the bewildered look on the red-heads face. She watched in amused horror as her cousin was forced to use a block that was mostly used by ladies who had trouble mounting, the shame of having such a relative tinged her cheeks pink which just endeared her to Darcy more. "I am going for a ride, I must hasten to add that we must be going soon if we wish to reach our destination on time, don't you agree Miss. Bingley?"

The woman in question looked around, noticing that everyone was waiting for her to mount her horse so they could set off. Painfully, she was forced to swallow the words that burned into her mind and mounted her horse silently hoping that she showed more grace than Elizabeth had.

"Right, off we go then." Bingley called from his place a few feet in front of them, as he settled at a trot alongside Jane who was smiling sweetly as him. The group settled into a nice pace, the Hurst's still remained at the front thoroughly captivated by each other by what Elizabeth could tell. Leading her to muse if the match had been about more than money, she hoped so as the couple shared smiles alongside whispered words. Bingley and Jane also remained slightly in front of the group enjoying each others company above anyone else's that was present.

Mr. Collins who had trouble getting onto his horse was having more trouble controlling the stubborn steed, it had taken him three attempts to get the horse moving. Then it had taken a huge amount of coaxing to get the animal to slow down when it had galloped away suddenly after his attempts to get it to move. He held tight onto the reigns desperately trying not to fall off, he pulled hard on them bringing the animal to a stop where he realised that the horse had gone the wrong way as the group was moving away from him in the opposite direction. With as much dignity as he could muster he managed to catch up to the group and the horse seemed content to keep pace with the others.

The largest group consisted of the other guests of the house plus the hostess, the conversation was controlled by Richard who was retelling a story about his time with his soldiers. Then Mr. Collins deemed fit to demand the attention of the party when he rejoined them. He began lecturing them on what Lady Catherine would say about the gardens and horses as well as their riding techniques, offering advice on how best to improve the garden as he boasted about his own success with his patch outside his humble home. Elizabeth was able to tune out his incisive droning until she heard her name mentioned.

"... Although I must admit, Miss. Bingley that your riding does appear very accomplished." Miss. Bingley smiled brightly at the comment sitting straighter as if to show off her skill more, her actions were lost upon their target as his eyes didn't leave the form of Elizabeth, as he trailed behind the group trying to escape the eternal chattering of Collins. "However, your riding skill does appear to be lacking the natural grace. Lady Catherine assures me that had she learnt to ride herself then she would have surpassed anyone with the natural grace that she possess. You, Miss. Bingley may be able to learn or observe such grace by observing either Miss. Darcy or my dear cousin Miss. Elizabeth." So stunned by his statement that nobody said anything to his declaration.

Darcy watched as both ladies tensed at the idea of a Miss. Bingley observing them to better herself, Richard looked over at his cousin she smiled at him slightly shaking her head for him to not say anything. Mr. Collins seemed oblivious to the tension that his words had caused between an already tense atmosphere surrounding Miss. Bingley and Elizabeth, as he continued on with his talk. Much to everyone's relief they saw the picnic that the servants had set out for them, just a few feet away.

When the group arrived the two couples had already dismounted and were settling into the seats. Richard and Darcy dismounted swiftly, securing their horses before turning to help Georgiana dismount. Miss. Bingley asked for Darcy's help in dismounting, he couldn't refuse without seeming rude. Mr. Collins was once again having trouble with his horse, he couldn't get the animal to stay still long enough to dismount. The horse bucked after Collins pulled its mane in an attempt to stay on top.

The man landed on the floor with a thump, the horse took off running. Elizabeth being the only one left on a horse spurred Beauty to a run, trying to catch it before it was too late. The distressed animal was galloping towards a stream with a large drop, if it wasn't stopped soon it would hurt itself.

Darcy had un tied and jumped quickly on Hermes and set off after them, Richard had managed to knot the reins as he was trying to untangle them so was late to give chase. Elizabeth had managed to change the direction of the horse and it was now heading out of the Netherfield grounds. Darcy had caught up, just as Elizabeth had rounded on the horse and stood in front trying to calm the frightened beast. She had just got him to calm down when Darcy dismounted.

"Do you need any help?" A voice called from the fence that separated the fields. Elizabeth who had been caught up trying to calm the horse hasn't noticed him, she turned at the voice and ran to hug the man. Darcy stood off to the side wondering at who the gentleman was, trying to stop his jealousy showing. He noted that the gentleman was tall, blonde he was good-looking and knew it. Richard reached him at that moment, he raised his eyebrows as the man settled Elizabeth on the floor after twirling her around.

"Eddy, where have you been hiding." She asked once released from his hold, trying to ignore the stares of Darcy and Richard.

"Well, Lizzy how nice it is to see you again. Not even a hello, how cruel." The stranger answered. "I have just seen Aunt Fanny, she was in a flutter of glee would you know why, oh dear cousin." He asked glancing behind her at the two fashionably dressed gentlemen.

Elizabeth laughed at the thought, shaking her head at her mothers antics before following his glance. "How rude of me, Eddy this is Mr. Darcy and his cousin Colonel Fitzwilliam. Gentleman allow me to introduce my baby cousin Edward Gardiner." She announced smiling at the grimace that bestowed her cousins face at her teasing.

"Forever a child in your eyes Lizzy, you and Mama refuse to allow me age at all." He sighed smilingly her, before bowing formally to the gentleman who returned the gesture.

"If you are to age then we must admit that we are ageing too. No sweet Eddy, you shall forever be a child that still dotes on us." She teased stepping back as to hold onto the horses reins once again.

"How am I to argue with such logic." He bowed his defeat making her laugh at his antics which in turn made Darcy frown at the man. "I was informed that Jane had taken ill, what a dreadful nurse you are to neglect the patient."

Elizabeth shook her head at him, "Indeed, such neglect will no doubt go unpunished as well as unnoticed. I must return to her at once to tell her what a wayward our Eddy has become." He frowned at her unsure if she was joking or was telling the truth. Jane believed the best in everyone but Elizabeth could spin a tale so well that she could convince many of her words, even the most stubborn of men.

"So Jane is not dying a painful death whilst you chase after horses." He exclaimed. "It seems you have been diligent in your correspondence Lizzy, for you never once informed me that you were riding again."

Elizabeth tried to refrain from rolling eyes at her cousins flitting attention, he could never be still for long. Something he hadn't out grew as he matured.

"What ever shall you fault next dear cousin. For you have insulted my nursing, my greeting and now my writing. If you must know I was forced into riding by a mutiny." She stated gesturing to the gentlemen behind her.

"It wasn't much of a mutiny Miss. Elizabeth, for who could say no to Gigi?" Richard corrected her causing her cousin confusion. He knew how stubborn Elizabeth had been about getting back on a horse, only using one when necessary.

"She is like Jane, how can anyone say no to someone so sweet?" She retorted, quickly she realised that Jane would be worried and she had left her in the company of Mr. Collins, poor Jane.

"Well its good to know that my persuasive skills holds nothing to a sweet person." He said, catching the distracted look of his cousin. "To who does this fine beast own?"

Lizzy watched as he interacted with Beauty, Darcy she noticed had gone back on guard, wearing his mask as he talked to her cousin. They discussed the breed of the animal something that she was lost in, she decided to turn and ask her questions of Richard.

"Colonel, you wouldn't know why such a temperamental animal was given to Mr. Collins?" She asked, her question drew her cousin from his discussion.

"Collins? What is he doing here?" His voice carried a deep loathing towards the gentleman, Darcy noted that no one seemed to like the gentleman at all.

"Mr. Collins is visiting Longbourn. How was Mary when you left?" She replied diverting the topic away from the vile man.

"Mary wanted to come with me but she had to finish of the tenant baskets." He answered, drawing slightly into his own thoughts until his cousins voice interrupted his musings.

"I was going to do those when I returned. After our little picnic actually, Jane will probably be worried by now as to why we haven't returned." Elizabeth observed unwillingly to leave her cousin so soon.

"Quite true, Mr. Gardiner if it wouldn't trouble you would you care to join us. Of course you will have to ride the horse back to Mr. Collins." Darcy asked, seeing the hesitation in Elizabeth's face to leave. He found joy in the eager smile that spread across her features, knowing that Bingley will have no trouble with another guest.

"Well if I can aid you, then some food shan't go amiss." Eddy smiled easily, not missing the way Darcy watched his cousin but made note as to question her later.

"Careful Edward, the horse just threw Mr. Collins. Aunt will never forgive me if you were hurt." Elizabeth cautioned as he mounted.

"Dear cousin, this horse just has good taste. No one would be calm when that toad is upon them or even near." Elizabeth shook her head at his words whilst Richard laugh and agreed with the statement.

"You haven't lost your humour Ed, nice to see you again" Richard added, enjoying the look of shock from his cousin and Elizabeth.

"You too Colonel, always wonderful when you survive a battle be it the Ton or war." He smiled easily.

"Very true my friend, though I do tend to prefer one to the other, and not the one most would expect." Richard smirked at the frown that was printed in his cousins features. "How is your father? I haven't spoken to him since I returned."

Elizabeth seemed to understand the connection after a moment, having constant correspondence with her relatives that resided in town. She smiled as soon as the recognition of her aunts new acquaintance sprang to mind.

"Oh, so you're the soldier." She said, narrowing her eyes at her cousin. "Eddy would never reveal your name, though why I never understood til now."

Darcy's eyebrows fused together in deeper confusion as he seemed on the verge of saying something his cousin jumped in before he had the chance.

"Quite right Miss. Elizabeth, we should be on our way." He replied before anyone could say anymore. Darcy decided to bide his time until he found out what his cousin was hiding.

The horse took better to Edward, and was easily controlled much to his amusement as he rode he bragged about his way with animals. Which allowed Edward and Darcy to continue the earlier discussion of horse breeds as Elizabeth allowed her senses to be overwhelmed. The breeze in her hair and the sun's caress upon her face was pure bliss after days confided to four walls.

"Miss. Elizabeth, I hope I can count on your discretion, concerning my dealings with your uncle." Richard mumbled never taking his eyes off the path ahead.

"Of course sir," was her immediate reply. "I do understand your motives but why the secrecy."

Silence filled the empty air between them as they continued their ride, she had just resigned herself to not having an answer when he spoke.

"You may say you understand my motives, but if that was true you would understand my wish for secrecy until my goal is secure."

She nodded accepting his answer but couldn't prevent herself speaking hers.

"Surely, just a few hints as to allow some hope but also shows the caution that is required. Others may be surprised if you have not openly shared this information with those you have an intimate relationship." She spoke softly, not trying to force her ideas upon the man.

"You are full of wisdom Miss. Elizabeth, I will consider your advice now if you'll excuse me I am going to acquaint myself with your cousin." He smiled in parting leaving her in peace as she once again let her senses absorb the wonders of riding again.

So absorbed in relishing in her experience, Elizabeth jumped slightly at the deep voice talking to her.

"It would appear I am making a habit of startling you, for that I owe you an apology." He spoke.

"You do seem to catch me unexpected. One might even suspect you are doing it on purpose, sir." She supplied sweetly smiling as the corners of his mouth quirk at the idea. He was quick to assure her that it was not his intention just a happy coincidence.

"My purpose was to ask if you possess any regret upon agreeing to riding." Darcy watched her face as her eyes sparkled with joy captivating him.

"Mr. Darcy, you may congratulate yourself. As your mutiny was successful, yet the trouble now is if I will ever leave this saddle." Darcy chuckled at her, a deep sound that made her smile more it was a rare treasure to hear it.

"Miss. Elizabeth, wouldn't it be possible that if I could persuade you to get on a saddle. The same goes for the reverse." He asked a mischievous twinkle gracing his eyes, causing Elizabeth's breath to catch as she once again took note of his beauty.

"How humiliating for your ego, Mr. Darcy, upon the realisation that it was Gigi not you who was successful." She teased, laughing as he frowned slightly, as if he had forgotten it was not just his victory.

"Lizzy! You are safe." Georgiana called, as soon as she spotted her,not feeling any remainder of her shyness once in her friends company.

"Not a word for your cousin, or your brother? Again Miss. Elizabeth you have corrupted my ward." Richard exclaimed as he dismounted.

"I admit no such offense, Colonel. For she was corrupt before I had any influence, Gigi is simply speaking her mind." Elizabeth defended dismounting as well, silencing her cousin with a look as he appeared on the verge of commenting.

"After all Richard we are only family why should she spare a thought." Darcy added, trying to be serious but Georgiana saw his lips twitch. She rejoiced, it had been so long since he openly joked even amongst friends.

"Mr. Collins do tell us what our dear aunt would say about such impertance." Richard called, laughing at the dark look he received from his ward. Fortunately for Georgiana, Mr. Collins was occupied staring at the new face, who Georgiana noted was quite handsome.

She also noted that the gentleman seemed familiar with Elizabeth just based on the playful looks that were exchanged. Stealing a glance at her brother he seemed relaxed, no hostility was present towards the gentleman either she was mistaken about his affections which she highly doubted or he perceived the gentleman no threat to him.

"Darcy it does appear you have gained another person." Bingley observed when he finally looked up from his angel. Jane too looked up and smiled in recognition, reassuring Georgiana that this man was known to the Bennet's this stopped the nerves and shyness that had threatened to appear at the sight of a stranger.

Mr. Collins was still silent, trying to figure why the face was familiar to him.

"Nice of you to take notice Bingley." Richard said, amused at the slight blush that spread across his cheeks. Miss. Bingley finally gave up trying to persuade Mr. Darcy to sit beside her when the party stood to receive their new guest. It was to her great surprise when she latched eyes on such a handsome face that made her feel suddenly self-conscious, she was stunned into silence.

"Eddy, an unexpected pleasure." Jane said when she approached him. Confusion controlled her features when he sighed dramatically as if offended. She relaxed when she spotted the teasing glint in his eye; that would always be present when he and his accomplices usually Elizabeth felt mischievous, Jane remember with a fond smile. Elizabeth rolled her eyes at him, before introducing him to the group.

"I hope you don't mind him intruding Mr. Bingley. This is our cousin Edward Gardiner, he was by the fields where we finally got the horse calmed." Elizabeth introduced, hoping the amiable gentleman wouldn't be offended that he was there uninvited.

When Elizabeth allowed herself to look at Miss. Bingley, mentally prepared for any objection she could present, she coughed to disguise a laugh. Upon Miss. Bingley's fave was the smitten expression that many admirers wore when in her cousins company. It was similar to the smitten expressions that suitors wore when gazing at Jane, the difference was that her cousin didn't doubt his ability to attract admirers and relished in the attention.

However, she held no fear over him becoming a rake or leading an innocent lady astray for he himself was smitten and had been since he was a child. Unfortunately, it hadn't been until recently that his lady shared his affections. Elizabeth was happy for them both, they complimented each other nicely she had encouraged the attachment on both sides and was pleased with her ability to unite two of her closest friends.

"Not at all, please do join us there is plenty to spare." Mr. Bingley said gesturing to the food set out. Edward raised his eyebrow at the gentleman silently questioning his motives to Elizabeth, who gave a meaningful look at Jane they both smiled in amusement.

Miss. Bingley seemed to control her sudden daze and was able to speak once more. "My brother is correct, we have enough to spare for you Mr. Gardiner; it is no burden nor intrusion for you to join us." Her words sent a sense of shock throughout the group, Elizabeth was forced to bite her cheek to stop her laughter from escaping her.

"See Ed, no trouble even Miss. Bingley says it's so." Richard interrupted the shocked silence and aided the group into motion. Darcy and Georgiana shared an amused glance as Miss. Bingley maneuvered it so that the uninvited guest was seated beside herself. Elizabeth rolled her eyes at her cousins antics as he was well aware of the young ladies motives and relished in her attentions.

"Mr. Collins, do tell what brings you to be in such company. Surely your dear Lady wouldn't have spared you so easily." Edward engaged the slightly pale clergyman, Elizabeth gave him a warning look at which he just smiled.

Everyone was deep in their own discussions, until Edward's words peaked the curiosity of Darcy, Elizabeth and even the newly reunited couple (Jane and Bingley) who appeared deep in conversation with each other exchanging smiles and blushes; but payed apt attention to the event, ready to defuse the situation if it was needed.

The Hursts seemed content in devouring their food and speaking quietly to each other and Miss. Bingley as she grew tired of being rendered speechless by her new acquaintance.

"Lady Catherine was actually the one who encouraged me to take this expedition. She wisely said that it is best to rebuild the bridges burnt by my late father as it would be best for both me and my relations. By rejoining the families it stands to aid us both. I'm sure even you can understand the wisdom of my patronesses words, dear cousin." He said all the time leering at Elizabeth who was seated directly opposite him, much to the displeasure of Darcy and Edward.

Edward noticed the deep scowl that hardened the great mans face as he looked upon the odious man who had stated words that weren't his own. Interesting he mused as he noted his displeasure at the toads gaze it appears my dear cousin has an admirer. Of the ladies affections he couldn't decipher as she was staring down the unwanted man in a look that would make him shake as a young boy, even now it caused him displeasure. However, Mr. Collins saw it as an expression of longing not of hate and was mentally plotting when to make their engagement official.

"Indeed, so much wisdom is rare. I clearly understand your meaning." Edward warned his voice low and holding none of his previous joy but was sharp. Jane glanced up at the tone coming from her usual jovial cousin.

"Lady Catherine is full of wisdom, she is the picture of all a Lady should be. Such grace, talent, wisdom, beauty, kindness. Without her help I would not have my humble abode nor would my parish be able to reap the rewards of her wisdom that she bestows upon us. Also, I would not have thought to mend my family for that I'm sure the Bennet's will be as eternally grateful as I." Elizabeth noted the smirk that crossed her cousins face before he responded to Collins she shook her head at him trying to dissuade him, to some extent as her cousin gave her a nod that showed he would be patient.

"Such a great Lady is a treasure to behold. Tell me of your humble abode, does it have a garden, a pond perhaps?" He asked all innocence Darcy sent a silent look at his cousin who nodded in agreement as they continued to watch the exchange, until the young man swiftly silence the man of cloth as subtly as possible.

"Oh yes, my dear lady has been most gracious in bestowing a comfortable home with a manageable amount of garden which does lead into a large pond, a beautiful sight in spring I'm sure Miss. Elizabeth as a great walker you could enjoy the beauty of the place as much as I." Collins stated once again dragging his eyes across her form.

"I am afraid as delightful as that sounds I'm sure I could never enjoy the sight as much as your great Lady, for it would never do the place justify if I was to express my opinion in such an inferior way to Lady Catherine." Elizabeth successfully kept a straight face throughout her explanation, the same could not be said for her relations. She patted Edward on the back as he was forced to choke to hide his laughter.

"Your modesty does you justice cousin, though it is true that Lady Catherine does own the greatest enjoyment of nature in the country as her extensive estate does show. You must not be ashamed of your station, Lady Catherine insists that everyone should know their proper place life without such order there is to be chaos. As Miss. Bingley should not be ashamed at her lack of natural grace upon a horse, for as a tradesman's daughter is hardly expected to prohibit the same grace as someone of gentle birth such as my relations." The woman flushed a deep red in embarrassment as she found great shame in her roots.

"Mr. Collins I believe we were on the topic of your garden before you were sidetracked." Edward guided the conversation back with ease, for he truly wished to end the mans tirade before he could do anymore damage to Jane and Elizabeth's possible suitors opinions.

"I was just enlightening Miss. Bingley to the wisdom of Lady Catherine, it would be very embarrassing if she was unaware of the divide in our classes. My garden has blossomed under the guidance of my patroness, the bloom I had last spring was a sight to behold. Although, everything is due to blossom under the advice of my patroness." Mr. Collins was completely oblivious to the shocked expressions that the group each entertained, at a nod from Elizabeth a wicked smile captured Edwards lips as he spoke his next words with fake innocence.

"How interesting Mr. Collins, I am sure we have each benefitted from your esteemed patronesses guidance today. Do inform me though if you have many animals in your garden. For such a garden as yours must be occupied for the beauty you described would be irresistable to animals." Edward started, " your pond for instant must home many fish, it wouldn't surprise me if a toad would choose to reside there. Don't you agree Richard?"

The Colonel looked as if he was seriously considering the question, "I am afraid I'm not well-informed on this subject, perhaps my cousin can shed some light on it." None of the gentleman paid any note to the draining of colour that was exhibited in Mr. Collins face. This followed the open debate about animals expected around the pound life that occupied the groups topic until Miss. Bingley called note to the oddness of it.

"Miss. Bingley, you are quite correct in your observations." Elizabeth noted. "Do tell what would you have us discuss, for we are now at your disposal."

The Hursts' who had been debating whether to take a walk before heading back departed the group after extending an invitation to the group, Jane and Bingley accepted and were followed by Georgiana who acted as a chaperone to the unmarried couple. Resulting in the four remaining gentleman to watch as Miss. Bingley tried to undermine her wiser opponent.

Miss. Bingley seemed stilted by Elizabeth's ready agreement, she quickly glanced at both of the gentlemen that she wished to impress with her wit. Both of them looked expectantly at her, awaiting her next word just how she always imagined them to be.

Richard and Collins were ignored throughout Miss. Bingley's gazing about the group, she perceived them to have little fortune with little beauty therefore held little interest to her. Unfortunately, for her, she could think of no comment to make to Elizabeth it seemed as if her good sense had deserted her.

"Even more to add to my list cousin, very neglectful whatever does Aunt do?" Edward teased filling the silence that had fallen.

"Shall I make my own list cousin? I do say that it will be most interesting for a certain acquaintance of mine." She retorted watching with glee as his smug smile was replaced by glare.

"How could you be so cruel as to even suggest such a fate. Very well I shall have mine as you have yours, remember though cousin that we have known each since we were babes." He replied gently, getting a wistful appearance once again as he thought on those days as children.

"Do you visit Hertfordshire often Mr. Gardiner?" Miss. Bingley asked, trying to gauge if he was wealthy for he dressed the part of a gentleman. The two cousins shared a knowing look as they watched Miss. Bingley gauge her prey, something Darcy himself had seen many times but not when he had been seated near her admittedly he felt a tiny bit insulted as well as relieved. It left him to ponder how she was so fickle with her emotions, leading to him feeling great pity to who ever her future husband was to be.

"As often as I can, I found it hard recently with business but now it has finally settled, allowing me to pursue more personal pursuits." He declared with a smile giving Elizabeth a wink that made Darcy frown when he saw her good-natured shake of her head. Did he wish to pursue her? There didn't seem to be any affection on either side but he had seen many marriages that ad been formed on mutual contentment even more that were a simple business arrangement. It was something that Darcy vowed to never endure, he wished for the deep love he had seen in his parents when they were together or is favourite aunt and uncle who doted on each other.

"Personal pursuits, you say?" Miss. Bingley repeated, Elizabeth saw the dash of disappointment dart across the ladies face before a cunning smile was replaced with a neutral mask. "I wish you well. I do believe we must start to head back, I'm sure your mother is missing you Miss. Eliza and dear Miss. Bennet."

Edward raised his eyebrow at Miss. Bingley's choice of name, Elizabeth despised the use of it and he had sustained many injuries using it. He waited with anticipation for his cousin to out the annoying woman in her place.

"How thoughtful of you to remember, however it seems you have forgotten something." Elizabeth replied sweetly, patiently waiting whilst Miss. Bingley thought about what she had forgotten.

"I am certain I have forgotten nothing, Miss. Eliza." Miss. Bingley said after a moments internal deliberation.

"Jane has not returned, surely you would not have me leave her here. Forgetting my name is Elizabeth can be overlooked, I could not ignore the abandonment of a beloved sister." Her words were spoke calmly, as close to a cold tone that Darcy had heard Elizabeth use even when talking to Collins.

Miss. Bingley flushed a deep red, stuttering as she tried to deny the accusations she was saved further embarrassment by the appearance of Jane. The couple each had tinted cheeks, though the gentleman's face dropped at the mention of his angel returning home so soon.

"Surely, Miss. Bennet you should stay another day. To be sure of your good health...not to say your sister is wrong or that you look unwell - you don't look unwell, you look quite well, very well." Mr. Bingley's words tumbled out before he could complete the sentences.

Elizabeth and Edward shared an amused glance as they saw Jane's bravo waver for a second before she shook her head, smiling sadly at him before replying "I'm afraid we have trespassed on your hospitality long enough Mr. Bingley, my sister and thank you for your kindness. Lizzy and I both believe i am well enough to return home."

The scene took place at the side of Bingley's carriage that he had readied for their return. The sisters would be accompanied in the carriage by their recently arrived cousin, whilst the Longbourn heir had been persuaded to ride Buttercup. Darcy was filled with deep admiration of Elizabeth as he watched her work her cousin into doing her wishes.

"Surely it would be better for Mr. Gardiner to ride Buttercup, for he is far superior." Mr. Collins tried to reason wiping his forehead with his damp handkerchief.

Edward had gone to speak but was silence by his cousin who laid a hand on his arm before engaging Mr. Collins.

"Doesn't Lady Catherine say perfection can be reached by practise, I do believe that was what you informed my sisters and I." She glanced at him, waiting until he nodded nervously unsure of what to say without seeing hypocritical. "Mr. Collins, what better example of your patronesses good advice then you? By practising your riding, you are improving yourself as Lady Catherine has instructed."

Georgiana had to cough to hide her laughter at the dumbfounded clergyman that stood eyeing Jane's mare with great mistrust. Elizabeth winked at her new friend but her face remained serious, the rest of the party were changing but Charles and Georgiana wanted see of the guests.

"How clever you are, dear cousin to aide my Lady's great words -" he was cut off by Edward who reminded the blundering fool that they must be on their way.

Jane was handed into the carriage last, Mr. Bingley holding her hand longer than was necessary to get her into the carriage. The journey itself was uneventful, Edward talked at length about his new sibling and how his mother was faring after the birth of her fourth child.

"She requested that I ask if you would want to visit, as she will not be well enough to visit for a while herself and we all know how she loathes not seeing you for a while." He spoke, watching his cousins reactions, well specifically Elizabeth's he wanted to see her regard for a certain gentleman.

She didn't give a moment's hesitation before agreeing to the scheme, Jane was more reluctant to agree though not objecting to the idea outright. She looked longingly out the window and sighed deeply causing the other occupants to share a teasing smile.

The journey was not long and they reached their home in a short time, their reception was not as they had anticipated for a start Mr. Bennet awaited them at the entrance.

He watched in amused interest as Mr. Collins tried to dismount Buttercup, he ended up on the floor once more. However, this time he was clutching his ankle not even trying to contain his feminine scream.

His girlish squeals caused the majority of house hold staff running to discover the source of such turmoil. Thankfully, Mrs. Bennet and the two youngest had gone to Mrs. Phillip in the hopes of glimpsing the newly arrived militia, so were not adding more noise to an already chaotic scene. Mary had come running at the sound of the noise, fearing it was one of her sisters she blushed slightly at her unladylike display when she saw who was awaiting her, the blush was only temporary but it was soon replaced by relief at noting no one she loved was hurt.

Mr. Bingley's coachman was helping Mr. Collins to his feet with a substantial amount of support, the stout man was not light at all. Mr. Hill and Davis who had come to investigate noise helped to support the wailing man.

"Give him one of Mrs. Bennet's draughts until Mr. Jones arrives. I want a note dispatched to Mr. Jones as soon as he is in the safe and one of the servants can be spared, if you wouldn't mind arranging that please Mrs. Hill." Elizabeth took charge of the situation, once it came apparent that her father was struggling to think of what to do against the wave of screams. "I think it best that we get him inside now. Edward can you please help Mr. Hill, Davis and Mr -"

"Smith. Mr. Smith ma'am." The coachman supplied.

"Mr. Smith to carry Mr. Collins to his room. If you would be so kind Mr. Smith I am sure your assistance won't go unrewarded." Elizabeth replied, moving to ensure this promise was followed through.

The three manservants aided by Edward half carried, half dragged Collins to his chambers. It was a few minutes after Mrs. Hill exited the room after giving her husband the draught, to help with Mr. Collins pain, that the house fell into a stunned silence.

Mrs. Hill had dispatched one of the maids to go give the message to Mr. Jones; whilst awaiting the news she prepared a warm drink and a bite to eat for Mr. Smith as Elizabeth had instructed. Mr. Smith when descended the stairs and bid his leave of the house not before Elizabeth insisted he have a bite to eat as well as take a small amount of money as gratitude for his services.

When he returned to Netherfield he continued about his business as normal, expect to notify Mr. Bingley of the safe delivery of the Bennet's to Longbourn. He knocked on the study door nervously, he was admitted entry by the master he was asked about the return of his guests.

"The Bennets arrived safely sir as did Mr. Gardiner." Mr. Smith was unsure if Mr. Bingley would wish to know anything about Mr. Collins, the gentleman had got a bad name amongst the staff for being harder to please then Miss. Bingley.

"Did something happen to Mr. Collins, Mr. Smith? I noticed that you did not mention him." Mr. Darcy asked, the coach hand jumped at the deep rumble of the masters friend.

He glanced at him briefly, wondering if he should divulge the information. Mr. Darcy was respected amongst the staff, he spoke politely to them but never caused any fuss.

"Mr. Collins, had some difficulties in dismounting, sir, when I left Miss. Elizabeth had me and two other servants take him to his rooms whilst a note was dispatched to Mr. Jones requesting his assistance." Mr. Smith had finally concluded that this was to be common knowledge soon, so saw no harm in revealing this information to his master.

"Thank you Mr. Smith, you may go." Mr. Bingley dismissed him before turning to Darcy bewilderment on his features. "That helps buy you some time."

Mr. Darcy who was staring out into the gardens started at Bingley's words. "Buy me time for what?"

Bingley smiled at his friend, a wide one that taunted Darcy with the fact that Bingley knew something that he, the great Darcy did not.

"Surely, you are not so ignorant of your feelings." Bingley asked, watching his friends face closely. At the puzzled look he decided to try a different blunter tact. "Darcy, you show concern for Miss. Elizabeth's well-being, something you have not extended to a lady outside of your family. If that's not the start of affection on your side, then I do not know you at all."

The room was filled with silence at these words as Darcy struggled with his inner turmoil, relenting he decided to see if talking to Bingley helped him understand his thoughts.

"To be honest I do not know how I feel. I know that I admire her, she is like no other woman of my acquaintance. Yet I can't rejoice in the inferiority of her rank, my duty is to marry well my family will be most bitterly disappointed in me if I marry below my station." Darcy breathed for a moment, he had taken to pacing in front of the fireplace once again. "I do not know what to do Bingley. However, it does not matter."

Bingley was shocked as he watched his usually private, reserved friend become unmasked by a woman that he had not known longer than a week. "How does it not matter? We are talking about your happiness Darce, you deserve to be happy too."

"If I am not mistaken, I pride myself on my few errors. Miss. Bennet will not remain Miss. Bennet for much longer. I heard her and Mr. Gardiner talking about asking Mr. Bennet about permission." Darcy muttered silently, slumping into a chair I'm a very un Darcy like fashion.

"Are you sure? You could have misheard -" Bingley started but was silenced by Darcy shaking his head.

"She was reassuring him that, Mr. Bennet would love him just like she did." Darcy stated, sounding completely defeated.

If you spot any errors don't hesitate to tell me, thanks.
