Chapter 17
Unfinished Business
Ray dropped Justin off in Fix-it Felix to recover from his injuries, and then made his way to the code council to check on the other mission's progress.
He knocked on the solid oak doors and watched them creak open.
"We were just about to call you." Red Cloak said as Ray day at the edge of the table.
"My mission has been completed. Is the factory gone yet?"
Silence overtook the council until Yellow Cloak responded.
"During the operation, Ashton appeared and overwhelmed the squadron we sent to take down the facility. Only you can complete the mission now."
"Gary went down too?"
"He's the only one we know for sure hasn't given up on the operation."
"How do you know?"
A screen flickered to life in front of them. On it, Gary and Ashton in full Shadow Wrecker attire were duking it out surrounded by dozens of inactive Dark Shards and Virus Cards.
"Shit..."
"He's going to die if you don't save him."
"He's not going to die because I will save him." Ray stood up and checked his gauntlet.
"Your power reserves must be really low after your fight with the Big 4." Black Cloak stated.
"I've never been stronger. My stamina is what worries me."
"Go with the faith that we are behind you."
Ray reached his destination and watched the building rock from the shockwaves the fight inside created.
He dashed through the doors to watch Gary collapse on the ground, his armor deactivating.
"This blow will end you!" Ashton growled. He brought a fist down on Gary's head that was blocked by Ray's arm.
"Do not..." Ray growled. His left eye had a blue tint flowing over it.
"This is my only path now. Stand aside!"
"I saw the good in you... Stop suppressing it! Your power could be used for something better."
"Lies!" Ashton shot back.
They separated and stared each other down.
"Power takes the form you give it. I was born with dark power but I choose not to be what it tells me. Stop corrupting yourself!"
"You deserve my best. This form won't work against you." Ashton returned to normal and snapped his fingers. Pitch black armor flowed across his body shielding him in darkness.
Ray let a similar type of armor flow onto him, though it was a metallic gray.
"Draw your weapon."
Ray pulled his Katado from the card while Ashton chose a blade made of darkness.
"I'm starting to see a theme here with you." Ray stated sarcastically.
"May this battle decide our fates."
Suddenly, a synthetic beat rocked the walls.
"Sarah! Turn that off!"
"Use the beat!" She shot back.
Gary teleported away as the music continued to play.
Ray and Ashton stared each other down.
(Do you wish to engage in combat? Let this be the perfect battle!)
Once the beat dropped, they were gone. Sparks could be seen where their weapons clashed but their bodies were transparent. Ray got a lucky shot and knocked Ashton visible, but Ashton got one right back seconds later. They looked pretty even on speed and power.
"I'm drawing power from everywhere. You can't defeat me!" Ashton gloated
"My power has no end. I shall prevail!" Ray growled back.
They broke apart, their weapons still at the ready.
The song seemed to be electrifying the battlefield because they were right back at it seconds later.
A turn strike was blocked by a well placed dodge while a potential stab attack was deflected by an armored boot.
"I'll burn out at this rate..." Ray thought to himself. "I have to end this soon."
Their two swords clashed again. Neither side looked any worse for wear, but Ray knew his health was declining fast.
They broke apart once more. "As much fun as this has been, I'm going to have to terminate you." Ashton chuckled. "You really are something."
"You should see me at parties. I'm sorry you have to go so soon." Ray retorted.
"I see what you did there."
"You didn't see this." Ray stabbed the Katado into the ground. "Thunder Wave!"
Ashton was stuck in place by the electricity emanating from the building. "This is..."
"The end. I will save you!" Ray dashed at Ashton, intent on purging the darkness in his heart, but was frozen in his boots by what happened next.
A sword was plunged through Ashton's abdomen. The ex-codemaster coughed up a decent amount of blood.
"ASHTON! NO!" Ray dropped the Katado and dashed for the boy, but Ashton fell to the ground, his lifeless body ceasing all function.
"Looks like he WAS expendable. And so is this factory now."
Sadness gripped Ray's chest as he stared at Shade.
"Why... He was on your side. He was loyal to your cause. All he did was help you AND YOU KILLED HIM!"
"THE DARKNESS HAS NO ALLIES!" He shot back.
Ashton's body faded into code. "I'LL KILL YOU!"
Shade dipped out of the way of Ray's electrified fist. "Not yet. You're too powerful and I'm not at my best."
"YOU WON'T LEAVE HERE ALIVE..."
"I'll leave you with this. You can't enter a war without expecting bloodshed. Steel your resolve or get stepped on."
The music ended with a pop as he was the only one left in the factory. Well there was Sarah, but she was on her way out as well.
"Looks like someone hit the mother lode! Look at all these Virus Cards!" The factory was cleaned out in seconds.
"Razor... Why do you need those cards?" Ray asked the man standing behind him, who was holding a single Virus Card. "They only spew hatred and despair. They're not a good source of anything..."
"That's easy. I'm going to use them to conquer the League and become their new leader. The more dark power I have, the better."
"So if you succeed, I'll eventually have to kill you... Won't I?"
"It's your choice. My course is set." Razor tapped his gauntlet twice and disappeared.
Ray had many conflicting emotions: sadness, confusion, rage, uncertainty. Nothing made sense anymore.
With the last of his energy and all of his pent up rage, he blew the factory sky high, leaving nothing in his wake.
1 week later...
"So what's the surprise?" Ralph was being led down a hallway in the Niceland Condominiums, blindfolded.
"Just be patient..." Ray slowly slid the penthouse door open. "Okay... Open your eyes!"
Ralph's eyes met darkness.
"Surprise! Happy Birthday!" a group of characters yelled as the lights flickered on.
"You remembered!"
"Like I'd forget my boyfriend's birthday!"
"This is amazing! You got everything!"
"Not everything..." Ray corrected.
"What's missing?"
"This!" Ray pulled a rope and a huge medal floated down.
"What's this?" Ralph queried as he looked at the shiny gold trinket.
"Ray+Ralph 4evr?"
"Yeah... You like it?" Ray blushed a bit and looked at the ground while rubbing his arm.
His answer came in the form of a lingering kiss that they shared as everyone whooped and hollered around them.
"Dj! Kick a slow jam!" Sarah barked from the crowd.
As the song started, they held onto each other and swayed in the center of the dance floor.
"Doesn't even seem like a week since we defeated the Big 4 together does it?" Ralph whispered as they held onto each other.
"Nope. Because it's been a week, 2 days and 12 minutes... 13 minutes."
"Smarty-pants" Ralph pouted.
"You know you love it."
"Yeah." They stood there for a while until the song ended.
All of a sudden, a rock pierced the silence as it crashed through the window of the penthouse.
"Really?! Felix?"
The handyman quickly patched up the hole and Ray picked up the rock, which just happened to have a note on it. He pulled the note off and read it out loud.
Dear Ray,
Congrats on beating my minions. You're the first to beat all 4 of a single arcade, but be warned. The Elite 8, my personal guard, are on their way to get revenge for their fallen comrades. Shit just got real.
Sincerely,
Lord Demonfang
P.S. Thanks for getting rid of Ashton. He was really annoying.
Everyone at the party just stared at Ray with beady eyes waiting for his response. That last sentence felt weird in his mouth. Shade hadn't told his superior that he did the deed. That he killed his ally. Ray shook the thought from his mind like he did all those weeks ago.
"I say... BRING IT ON! I'M GONNA WRECK IT!"
After the party ended and everyone went back to their respective homes/games, Ray walked over to the pile of rubble that was once Ralph's home. On top of the pile away from prying eyes, there lay a tombstone.
"Ashton... Your death will have meaning. I swear..."
I almost cried writing the ending. Almost...
