INTERLUDE

Anna and Mr Bates watched as Baxter and Molesley rose from the table to take their walk later on that evening. "Do you think anything will come of it?" Bates asked her.

"Of Mr Molesley and Miss Baxter? Well I hope so," Anna said. "They both deserve some happiness. As do we."

"What kind of happiness did you have in mind Mrs Bates?" he asked, lowering his voice.

"I dunno. Tonight in the cottage. Just the two of us," she hinted, laughing softly at the end. "But we mustn't talk of that here, Mr Bates. Or else we'll both be in trouble."

"And Mr Barrow's already in trouble," he replied, raising an eyebrow. "As per usual, it's his own fault for it too. I wonder what he did to Miss Baxter and Mr Molesley to warrant not being allowed to work or do anything for three days."

"I dunno, but I do think that it has something to do with Miss Baxter's past," Anna said. "But that's another thing I don't want to discuss here."

"Alright, can I rely on an explanation at home tonight then?" he asked, receiving a small nod from his wife. "Do you think that they're as keen on each other as we were?"

"We still are keen on each other, but now we don't have to worry about anyone else trying to steal the other one away Mr Bates," Anna said. "But yes, I know she's keen on him and Mr Molesley adores her, you can see it in his behaviour towards her. He's always a gentleman, but he really does try to impress Miss Baxter, doesn't he?"

"He does, much like I don't remember doing. But then it was so easy for us to just fall into things as friends and it grew from there. You looked like you felt that you had to impress me, but you didn't. And I doubt that Miss Baxter really needs to be impressed by Mr Molesley, he just can't see that he doesn't need to do it," Mr Bates said. "I just want our friends to be happy, and if we can do anything to help them become happy, then I say we do it."

"I agree, Mr Bates. Let's make our friends happy," Anna said, holding out her hand for Mr Bates to shake. They weren't promising their friends anything, they were only making the promise to each other that they would help their friends. And besides, Miss Baxter and Mr Molesley didn't need to know precisely what was going on at that moment, did they?
