Chapter 4
"Andrea, where am I? What happened?" Miranda sounded very tired and exhausted but it was no wonder after a heart attack and surgery.
"Miranda, try not to talk too much. You need to rest some more. But if you insist on knowing, you had a heart attack, Miranda and hey needed to do an angioplasty to remove a blockage. But everything is fine and you just need to take the time to recover now." Andy still held her hand and caressed her while she explained what happened.
"Oh God! What about my girls, the press and Runway?" Miranda's voice cracked.
"Shh, it's alright. The girls were here and are now with Greg. They will be back tomorrow afternoon. Leslie is keeping the press at bay as much as she can, but there are paparazzi all over the place. Nigel took over Runway, he will see the re-shoot is complete to your exacting standards. Now, Miranda, you need to relax. I need you to promise me that you'll rest or you could have another heart attack and that would tear me apart."
Miranda relaxed again and sighed.
"Miranda, I have to call the nurse so she can check on you. She will probably send me home but I already brought you some stuff...I mean things from the townhouse."
"No," Miranda stated firmly.
"Hm...no?" Andy was confused and saw Miranda purse her lips. She was happy to see that familiar look but knew she might be in trouble.
Miranda grabbed Andy's hand even tighter and closed her eyes. "I don't want to be alone, please." Miranda's eyes blazed open and she looked at Andy with unshed tears in them.
"It's alright, but I am not sure if the nurse will let me stay. You are in the ICU and it's supposed to be family only." Andy explained.
Miranda looked around and found the call button for the nurse. She pressed it viciously.
Sarah came back in and smiled. "Hello Mrs Priestly, how are you feeling?" She scribbled down some vital signs on her health record.
Miranda waved her hand dismissively. "Fine, just tired and my chest hurts a little."
"Okay, that's perfectly normal after your surgery. I will be right back with some painkillers." Sarah smiled and turned to Andy. "After that, you should go, Miss. Mrs Priestly needs to rest."
"Call me Miranda, please. And no, I need Andrea to stay. I won't be able to rest if she is not with me." Miranda stated quietly.
The nurse looked confused but then noticed they were holding hands and understood. "Alright, why don't I get you a blanket then?" Sarah agreed, smiling at Andy before she left to get the medication and everything else.
Andy was happy she was allowed to stay and caressed Miranda's hand with her thumb. She moved her chair a little closer to Miranda but had to let go of her hand for a minute.
Sarah strode back into the room and connected the IV to a vein catheter. "Okay Miranda, just so you know the painkillers will make you tired and drowsy." She handed Andy a blanket.
"May I have some water?" Miranda asked the nurse.
"Not yet, tonight you can have ice chips and tomorrow we will start with liquids." The nurse advised. Miranda rolled her eyes but the nurse just smirked at her, having heard about her reputation. She left to get the ice chips. Andy chuckled.
"And what is amusing you, Andrea?" Miranda asked in her most ice queen persona.
"Just this, you are yourself again." Miranda gazed at her a little confused. "Miranda, you scared the shit out of me, sorry for the language but you did, and you will never do that again." Andy realised what she just said and how she had said it. She covered her eyes with her hands and blushed. 'Shit, shit, shit!' She thought.
Sarah came with the ice chips and gave them to Miranda. "Alright, the pain meds will kick in soon so please rest now. I will come in and check on your vitals every hour. If you need me you know how to call me." Sarah left and
Miranda chewed on some ice chips and there was an uncomfortable silence until she broke it. "Hand..." She looked at Andy.
"Huh?" Andy looked up. Miranda rolled her eyes again and grabbed Andy's hand. "Oh okay, sorry about the way I spoke to you earlier," Andy said. Miranda just nodded and her eyelids fluttered closed. Andy took the ice chips and set them aside. "Why don't you rest and I will be right here if you need me."
"Kay...nighty night," Miranda said sleepily. Andy chuckled, it was clear by those words it was the pain medication talking. Miranda fell asleep almost immediately and Andy kept their hands entwined but Miranda kept a firm hold on her even in her sleep. An hour later Sarah came back to check on her vitals including blood pressure and Miranda woke up.
"Sorry to wake you, Miranda," Sarah whispered. "Your vitals are fine, I will be back in an hour. Good night." Miranda smiled and waved at her as she left. She looked like she was drunk.
"Hey Miranda, you can go back to sleep." Miranda looked at Andy and still had that goofy smile on her face.
"You're so pretty, Andrea. Well no, actually you're really hot..."Miranda drawled.
Andy blushed and choked on a laugh. "Thank you, Miranda. Now, go back to sleep."
"I don't wanna...I wanna make out with you 'cause you're hot." Miranda slurred.
Andy thought it was hilarious and she was glad that she was there to see Miranda like that and seeing her without her usual control for once. She knew Miranda would kill her if she remembered any of it. "We can make out some other time, you need to rest first," Andy said still chuckling.
"Oh you're no fun..." Miranda said pouting. "Maybe just a little kiss on the cheek." She batted her eyes. "Pretty please."
Andy couldn't deny her that and leaned over to kiss her cheek. But Miranda was quick enough to turn her head and kissed her right on her lips. Andy was shocked and pulled back immediately.
"Mm, that was really nice...now I can sleep," Miranda muttered, her eyes already closed.
Andy sat back on her chair still shocked and blushing from that kiss. Andy thought the editor was already asleep when it was silent for a couple of minutes. But then she heard a little whisper.
"Hand..." Miranda held her hand out to Andy.
Andy was happy to take it again, to feel the editor's hand in her own. Miranda had the softest hands and lips. She'd known, no matter how much she wished otherwise, she couldn't continue the kiss. She didn't want to take advantage of her boss. She draped the blanket over her and smiling dreamily, drifted off into a peaceful slumber.
