"Hey, Gin! Check this out." Harry handed slipped a parchment over the Defense book Ginny was researching for their homework. The parchment was made out to be a poster that advertised about a fair that was coming to Hogsmeade to celebrate Valentine's Day.
"So what do you think? Do you want to go?" Harry asked eagerly.
"Experience magic in its oddest nature," Ginny read out loud the ad. "Entrance is for a galleon? I'm not sure, Harry…"
"You know you don't have to worry about money – "
"It's not that," Ginny interrupted quietly. But upon seeing something almost childlike wishful thinking in Harry's eyes and realizing that he had never been to a fair before, Ginny cave. "Okay fine."
"Yes!"
"You're paying for every single thing, Potter. And don't be wise with all the junk I'm going to eat," Ginny said laughing along with Harry.
"I never get wise with the junk you eat."
"And that is one of the reasons why I still keep you with me." The two shared a kiss not caring that there were thirty other people about in the common room. "Now how about helping me with this? Seeing that you're finished with yours."
"Yes, ma'am."
"Hermione!"
"Shhh!" Someone from behind the shelves scolded.
"Ron? This is the library, you know better," Hermione said not looking up from her Defense book. "And if you're here to ask for help with the essay, I don't think I can help you as of the moment."
"It's not that I'm after. Harry already got me covered. Anyway – "
"What do you mean Harry got you covered?"
"Hey, one issue at a time, love," Ron placated sitting down beside the brunette. He handed her the ad of the fair coming to Hogsmeade.
"I'm not sure about this. I have Arithmancy charts to complete that weekend. Seeing the oddest part of magic doesn't sound… alluring," Hermione said hesitantly.
"C'mon, it won't take long. It's just for the afternoon. Everyone else in the school is going. I'll even stay up with you and your charts if you go," Ron said keenly.
"Are you sure about that?" Hermione asked.
"Yeah. So will you go with me please?"
"Alright. But if you fall asleep when I'm making charts, you're not going to get any help with your homework for a month," Hermione challenged.
"Deal." Ron stood up and kissed both of her cheeks. "Going to tell Harry. I'll see you later, okay?"
"Wait. Where did you get this poster anyway? And you still haven't told me how Harry covered for you?" Hermione was also standing up now both her hands on her waist just like how Mrs. Weasley does before a good scolding.
"Ummm…"
"Please tell me you didn't sneak up to Hogsmeade today, Ronald Weasley," Hermione said helplessly.
"Er – I can't. It was George's fault! He got me and Harry – "
"And please don't tell me Harry made your homework for you." Hermione tone was reaching in dangerous quiet levels.
"Of course not. He volunteered about forty-five percent of it… Okay, I'm going to stop talking now. Let's talk about this over supper later, okay? See you, love." And before Hermione could say anything else, Ron kissed her full on the lips before skipping noisily away from the library.
Madam Pince was looking sullen as ever.
"Oh! I do love a good fair. Daddy and I had so much fun with the rides in the Egyptian carnival that once stopped by in our trip to Denmark," Luna shared over supper in the Great Hall.
"They don't have those weird looking people and animals do they?" Neville asked.
"Not when I was in Denmark. Their government there doesn't tolerate those things," Luna answered.
"Well, the ad didn't say anything about so-called freaks so I guess there aren't any," Ginny added quietly.
"Let's hope not. I don't think I'd be interested to go if there are any," Hermione said sternly.
"I don't think there is. George would have mentioned it," Ron explained. George had successfully bought Zonko's later last year and had been over Hogsmeade since then. The older Weasley was the one responsible for Ron and Harry's afternoon escape from Hogwarts to celebrate the finalization of the improved joke shop.
The following weeks before the arrival of the fair had the seventh years in bedlam. Their homework was piling up fast and to top it off there was Quidditch practice the players had to worry about. Hermione had arranged a schedule for Harry and Ron so they could keep track with their homework. Over the busy days the seventh years had developed a routine and some nooks where they spent their time bawling over schoolwork. Hermione like most of their year's population was always in the library. Ginny, Luna and Anastasia preferred the outdoors or the empty classroom near the Ravenclaw Tower, which Anastasia got special permission from Professor Flitwick. Harry and his dorm mates spent their time in the Room of Requirement where they used to have their DA sessions. Kreacher would sometimes bring over food from the kitchens or from Hogsmeade to serve to the young men.
"Man, the twins do love their essays," Seamus remarked about their new teachers. He gave a low whistle as he eyed his half done essay for Transfiguration.
The past few weeks the Gryffindor boys were in the Room Requirement finishing the last of their homework before the weekend. Everyone was hyped up upon the knowledge of the upcoming fair coming to town that everyone was cramming their schoolwork Friday night so they can have their weekend off. Even the teachers were quite excited about it and gave the first and second years a chance to visit the village with special permission from their parents.
"Isn't it a huge coincidence that they both gave us three feet worth of words to work on?" Neville asked.
"What? I thought we only have to do two for Cross?" Ron asked.
"Really?"
"Yeah, I have written only two for Cross too," Dean clarified.
"Oh no! I wasted an hour doing an extra foot? Do you think she'll give extra credit?" Neville asked feebly.
"Don't think so, mate. Remember Hermione's extra ten inches with the vanishing and reappearing objects? She gave her a B plus for not following instructions," Harry said sadly.
"Hermione did not appreciate that red mark," Ron said fondly recalling his girlfriend's chagrin that time.
Neville steamed off a few swear words before pulling another parchment to redo his prose.
"I think I'm done for tonight. Better turn in soon, Ron. We have practice early morning," Harry said standing up already picking up his things.
"Yeah, yeah."
As Harry made his way back to the Gryffindor Tower he saw red coming from the West corridor entrance. It was Ginny carrying books that looked half her weight. She appeared to be in a hurry and was panting.
"Whoa, easy there. You're going to hurt yourself," Harry said as he took the books from a surprised looking Ginny.
"Harry! C'mon hurry, he's after me." Ginny pulled him to the short cut to the Gryffindor Tower.
"Who's after you?"
"Filch! He wouldn't believe that we have special permission from Flitwick to use one of the classrooms and Ana already left so me and Luna have nothing for evidence. So we threw him some Peruvian Instant Darkness Powder – "
"You what? Are you crazy?"
"No. Luna thought of it. She had never used one before and I thought the timing was perfect."
"You are crazy. You couldn't have just run for it?"
"We did. We are. Now hurry or else you'd be one less Chaser in the next game." Harry didn't argue and made his pace quicker in his amusement.
The Quidditch practice the next morning was the quickest one they had. Everyone just wanted to head to Hogsmeade that day. The team assembled before time and each member made sure they got their drills right so they could finish early.
"Makes you wish there'd be a carnival in town a week before every game, huh?" Ron remarked after all Chasers had outsmarted him for the umpteenth time.
"Maybe. On the other hand you should work on that lunge more. Megan has the same built with one of the Hufflepuff Chasers. A bit more momentum and we can save more," Harry said.
"Little flyers tend to shoot from above the hoop. They rely on gravity for the ball's speed. But yes, I'll keep that in mind." He gave his best friend a shove and did another round of Keeping.
After hitting the showers after practice Harry and Ginny together with Luna headed straight to Hogsmeade. Ron and Hermione had prefect duties of keeping the first and second years in line for the Hogsmeade Fair.
Once they arrived in Hogsmeade the fair fever was on full force. Harry was surprised with the number of people that showed up. The streets were crowded with townsfolk, some tourists and probably the whole of Hogwarts. There were food stands decorated with red and pink hearts that filled up the sidewalks. There were people in costumes from a clown- looking wizard to a small group of men in stilts.
"Oh, how lovely don't you think?" Luna chided happily. "Where do you think the fair is?"
"Well, I see something tall and circular over there," Ginny pointed at the moving Ferris wheel placed near the woods before the Shrieking Shack.
"C'mon!" Luna said pulling the couple as she skipped.
They first tried on all the rides. They had unpleasant names like Stomach Spill and Gut Giggles and vampires, zombies, satyr and other species Harry had not yet seen before manned them. And the more horrible the name of the ride the giddier Luna went. Ginny was most entertained of her friend's unusual behavior and that was always saying a lot for someone like Luna.
Harry enjoyed all the rides except for the Gravity Grabber, which basically dragged the riders up and down in variations of speed and height. He didn't enjoy it because a younger boy sitting a row above him threw up halfway the ride, which led him to ten minutes of magically cleaning himself up, five minutes of non-stop apologies from the boy's mother and twenty minutes of Ginny and Luna mercilessly giggling at his plight. On the other hand the Ferris wheel, which was called Astro Angle was his favorite. As it gradually swung around, it gave riders a real outer space experience. Once seated in their little booths, it's as if they were transported outside earth to see up close the planets and stars.
"That ride would have been great for Astronomy!" Luna exclaimed munching on some chocolate pretzels.
"I wonder how they sustain such strong magic like that," Hermione thought out loud.
They were sitting at the benches near some food stands after a long day of trying on the rides. Ron and Hermione joined Harry, Ginny and Luna after their shift. They were later joined by some of the members of the DA who were there too.
"Harry! Harry, my boy, got time?" Professor Slughorn said as passed by their bench holding a cold mug of butter beer.
"Sir?"
"I would like to invite you and all of your friends for a dinner party… say Easter? I have several of my friends coming over to visit me and I thought it would be mighty marvelous for you and your friends to meet them," Professor Slughorn said giving his drink an enthusiastic swing.
"I'm not sure sir…we have exams and Quidditch. I don't – "
"C'mon, dear boy! You and your friends might want to learn a thing or two from the professionals themselves… help you boost your future careers," Professor Slughorn coerced.
"Er – "
"We'll be there, Professor Slughorn. Harry as well," Hermione said unexpectedly.
"Very good, Ms. Granger! See you, Harry, everyone," And with a nod to the small crowd, Professor Slughorn made his way swaying a little.
"Before you bite my head off I think you better have this one now and hopefully it'll be the last," Hermione said quietly as she met Harry's heated gaze. "Besides he did have a point about the career thing even though his connections are somewhat off."
Hermione was right. Harry had been putting off the Potions master since the beginning of term, which was hard because he had improved so much in Potions since the Half-Blood Prince incident. Yes, might as well have it over with.
"Fine. You're all coming, okay?" They all nodded.
The next day was spent trying the different booths in the fair that were not a different as the booths in a Muggle fair although, of course, magic was required in some performances and the prizes were not at all normal.
Ginny won a Holyhead Harpies poster after shooting green sparks on some white marbled bodied pixies in records time. Hermione and Anastasia were most proud of their potion-concocting contest that they won over older witches and wizards. They both received blue ribbons and a basketful of beauty potions.
"I hope for Ron's sake he's still awake while Hermione finishes her charts," Ginny said that night when she and Harry were just laying down their usual spot looking up the stars.
"They made a deal. But I think Hermione would still help Ron even though he falls asleep tonight," Harry replied.
"You're right. If you were Hermione, would you still help me even though I'd fall asleep leaving you and your unfinished charts?" Ginny asked casually her eyes closed.
"Well, I think I'm more forgiving than Hermione so yes. I'd still help you."
"I thought so too. And for the record, I'd do the same."
"I know you would."
"And Harry?"
"Yes?"
"This was the best Valentine's weekend I had so far."
"Same."
