Who Would Have Thought?

Summary: As a small child, Lucy only had a few, good friends. Her childhood was relatively normal and fun for a little girl. However, there was one person who would ruin it every chance he got by playing pranks on her, teasing her, and calling her cruel names. After 10 years apart, will love arise? Or will old habits begin to surface once again?

Chapter 7

"Lucy, how was your first day of school? Did you see any of your old friends?" Layla greeted her daughter as soon as she saw her walking into the living room. She had been reading a classical book when she heard the front door open and the sounds of footsteps approaching.

Lucy smiled at her mother, took a seat on the sofa, and set her bag down on the floor next to her. "Yeah, school actually went pretty well, mom."

Aside from my dwarf of a principal who has a surprising side to him...

His overly happy secretary...

The few interesting teachers I have..

AND the two separate instances when I was publicly groped!

Yeah, pretty much the entire school is way beyond the definition of weird.

"See? I told you everything would go okay."

"Y-yeah." Lucy remembered her mother's words from that morning and nodded happily. "I saw all my old friends, because luckily I have a few classes with them so I'm not completely alone. Levy, Loke, Wendy, Erza, Cana... I even met some new people. Even though they're a bit.. odd, they were really nice."

Layla laughed softly. She was clearly happy that her first day of school went so well and that she met new people as well. "That's so good to hear.. what about Natsu?"

"H-huh?"

"Natsu. Did you see him as well?"

Suddenly, Natsu's distinct pink hair and goofy smile flashed into her mind. She recalled their very 'close' interaction that morning to their awkward silence in the elevator to lunch and finally in their last class together. She had spent that entire period teaching Natsu how to solve the problems. She had to admit working with his was kind of awkward considering what had happened during their childhood. However, now that they were older, Natsu seemed to have matured greatly, because he did apologize for tormenting her so terribly when they were kids.

She quickly looked down her lap and her blonde locks hid her blushing face. "Umm..."

"I'll take that as a yes. I'm sure he's quite the handsome young man now."

"Y-yeah, well, I'll be going up to my room now to get started on this homework!" Lucy quickly grabbed her bag and waved goodbye to her mother. This was a most obvious attempt to avoid the conversation that her mother was going into.

"Homework already?"

"Yeah... tons.." Lucy lied as her face flushed a pink color. Slowly she backed away out of the room and toward the stairs. "The teachers really want us to start learning immediately, you k-know?"

Layla shook her head and smiled softly. "Well, okay. By the way, your father called today and asked how you were doing, and I told him you were starting school today. He said good luck! Also, he said he would be joining us here shortly as well. He just has a few more things to take care of."

"Oh, okay."

"Anyway, I should go ahead and get dinner started. What would you like to eat, sweetie?"

"Hmmm..." Lucy thought to herself and shrugged her shoulders. "Anything really. I'm not particularly picky today, mom."

"Alright. You can go on up and do your homework as you say." Her mother placed emphasis on the work which made her daughter laugh nervously. "I'll call you when it's ready."

"K-kay, thanks, mom."

~Upstairs in Lucy's bedroom~

Lucy pushed open her door and walked inside. She was surprised to see her room completely clean, but she then remembered the maid from that morning. "Oh yeah.. that girl! What was her name again? Virgo?"

"Yes, princess?" The monotone voice came from out of nowhere and scared Lucy half to death. Virgo, who was holding Lucy's laptop in hand, was standing behind her bedroom door. It seemed that she had been there the whole time.

"Aaaaaahhh! Y-you scared me.." Lucy clutched her chest and breathed deeply from the fright she just experienced.

"Oh, I'm terribly sorry, princess. Do you want to retrieve the whip for my punishment?"

"No.. that's.. wait, what? A whip?" Lucy had just realized what Virgo had said. She wasn't expecting the ordinary looking girl to say something like that.. again! "Why in the world do you have that!?"

"When people do wrong, they are punished for it. As I should be for scaring you, princess." Virgo looked right into Lucy's shocked eyes with a completely strange face.

"No! It's fine! Really... just make your presence known from now on, okay?"

"Yes, princess. Please forgive me."

Lucy sweat dropped and shook her head in slight frustration. "I-I forgive you, Virgo.."

Surprisingly, Virgo gave Lucy a small smile before she held out Lucy's laptop in front of her. "While I was cleaning your room, I heard a ringing noise on your laptop. I think you were receiving a video call."

"Huh?" Lucy was given her laptop and thought about who could have called her. "Mmm... oh! It must be one of my friends from Hong Kong!"

"Is there anything you need, princess?" Virgo asked as she watched her lay down on her bed with her laptop.

"No thanks... but thank you for cleaning for me."

"You're welcome, princess. I'll be leaving now."

Once Virgo was gone and her bedroom door was closed, Lucy opened her laptop and logged on. She was currently logged into Skype, and there was a missed called from her friend, Li. Also, there's a message from her as well.

Li Lana: Luucccccyyy! Call me wen U finish ur 1st day of skool! :)))

Li Lana was still online, so Lucy decided to give her a call. Hopefully, she was at her computer. The line rung for a few seconds and was quickly answered by a smiling face.

"LUCCCY!"

"LI!" The girls screamed each other's named and laughed.

"It's so good to hear your voice and see you again! It's not the same without you here..." Li said while she was sitting on her bed with books scattered around her.

Lucy laid down on her stomach and tilted her head to the side. "Yeah, I feel the same way. How is everyone doing?"

"Well.." Li pushed her books to the side to lay on her side to relax a bit. "Nothing much as changed really."

"Oh, oka-"

"EXCEPT that we're all super depressed that you're not here anymore! I had to buy Bon Bon TWO tubes of her favorite ice cream just so she would stop crying."

"Did it work?"

"Yeah, until she finished then and wanted more to drown her sorrow."

"Aww..."

"Y-yeah.." Li made the saddest face that Lucy has ever seen her make. "But we are all happy that you have this chance to revisit your home city and see all of your old friends. But don't go replacing us now though!"

"N-never!" Lucy smiled once more. "No one could ever replace you guys."

"Hahaha, yeah.. we are a special bunch of teens, aren't we?" Li giggled happily. "So how was your first day of school? Did you see anyone you know? How are your teachers? What classes are you taking?"

"Yeah, it was a very interesting first day to say the least.. but it was pretty embarrassing too."

Li raised an eyebrow of curiosity. "Interesting AND embarrassing you say? Tell me all about it! And you better NOT leave out anything."

For the next thirty to forty-five minutes, Lucy explained all the events that occurred at school that day from the moment she first arrived to the her last class that she spent helping Natsu with his work. She even mentioned what had happened when she visited the school the day she arrived in Japan. Li Lana took in each detail piece by piece. By the time Lucy was done, she had a huge grin on her face.

"Well, well, sounds like your new school is pretty weird but in a good way, so that's good. Because when you're sexually groped on your first day , you know you're in for a good time!"

"Oh, haha.." Lucy laughed sarcastically.

"And you met all of your old friends including that Natsu guy.. sounds like you guys made up pretty fast! Now don't make Dao jealous now." Li teased with a devious look on her face.

"W-what are you talking about!?" Lucy blushed brightly and shook her head. She then rested her head on her arm that was propped up against her head. "N-Natsu and I aren't like that. We're just friends.."

R-right?

We're friends now..

After a couple more minutes of talking together, the girls bid each other goodnight. Li Lana had homework to do after all, and Lucy, well, needed time to reflect on the day she'd had.

"Alright, talk to you later, girl! Got to get this work done. You know how Mr. Pushni is.."

"W-what!? You have him again this year?"

"Unfortunately.." Li Lana laughed nervously with a bead of worried sweat rolling down her face. "But don't worry about me! I got this. You just worry about having fun at your new school and with your friends. And make sure to tell me

"I will, goodnight!"

"Night!"

The Skype call ended and Lucy nearly closed her laptop just as she received a text message. It was from Dao.

Dao: Hey, did u forget about me or something? How absolutely rude of U!

The least U cud do is msg me or call once in a while. :/

Lucy: Ha! You sound like a crzy grlfriend

Dao: Oh, now I'm crazy am I? U never listen to me or care about

my feelings anymore!

Lucy: Because you drv ME crazy! U always talk about ur feelings, but

wat about ME? ;(

Dao: Wat about u? U havnt said a word to me since u left!

And wat am I supposed to think?

Lucy: Umm.. IDK, BUT r u goin 2 continue be crazy or will I hav 2

tlk to u at another time, mister?

Dao: Lmao, alright I'm done! I'm done.

Anyway, how's it going so far? With ur new skool and all, I mean.

Lucy: Well, it's a long.. crazy story.. If u hav time to listen.

Dao: I hav a couple hours to blow, go ahead

~Nearly thirty minutes and several long messages later~

Dao: Damn, sounds lik you had quite the adventure!

Lucy: U cud say tht. lol

Aside from all the craziness, it was pretty good first day.

Dao: Sounds like it. Um... did u see..

Lucy: Who? ^_-

Dao: Natsu

Lucy: Oh, umm... yeah, he actually apologized and everythin, so we're kind of

friends now.

Dao: Seriously? After wat he's done to u?

Lucy: He's changed.. or at least I think so. I'll just have to see, wont I?

Dao: Yea, sure. But just be careful. People usually don't grow out of

old habits so easily, you know.

Lucy: I know.. and thanks for worrying about me. :D

I'll b fine. I'll let u kno if somethin happens, k?

Dao: Good. I'll fly all the way

there and beat him up just for you. ;)

Lucy blushed at the thought of Dao fighting for her, and she also remembered the kiss he had given her the day she left. She wondered if that was as friends or something more. However, she had no time to dwell on it.

"LUCY! DINNER'S READY!" Lucy heard her mother call her name from downstairs. Time had gone by faster than Lucy had realized. It was already getting dark outside.

Lucy: Hey, gotta go! Dinner is ready! TTYL

I promise!

Dao: Alright, alright, I'll b holdin u to that too!

Hope to tlk 2 u again soon :)

Lucy: Me too. :3

~A few days later: Friday Afternoon~

It's been a couple of days since Lucy's first day of school, and it's been relatively going good so to speak. Aside from the strangely weird people, the school had a friendly, welcoming atmosphere that she was beginning to enjoy.

In those few days, Lucy had gotten much closer to her friends and was getting to know her teachers and the people who attended the school a lot better. Many people were fairly nice while others were not as sweet. However, Lucy has learned who and who not to mess with or talk to. For the most part, most of the people she's talked to were nice. Also, she had thought about joining a club or two such as the Art club.

While Lucy enjoyed the time she spent at school and with her old friends, she and Natsu were slowly becoming full blown friends. She was starting to get to know him as well. To her complete surprise, he was the complete opposite of what he was when they were kids. He was the captain of the basketball team, he did fairly well in all his classes except math, and that he was pretty well-known and liked by mostly everyone. Although he still has his joking and teasing personality, it's mostly toward his guy friends rather than to girls. The hurtful memories of their past seemed to fade away each time they were together. Lucy actually felt kind of happy spending the time she had with him in math.

Now, today was Friday, and tonight there would be an all girl sleepover at her house. Lucy and her friends hadn't had a chance to get together like they planned, because the first few days of class required their full attention. With the weekend here, they planned to spend it all together. First a sleep over with the girls on Friday and then a get together with the girls and guys.

"We'll meet up in front of the school after our last class, Lu-chan!" Levy screamed aloud as she waved goodbye to the blonde.

"Alright! See you then."

Lucy waved back to her friend as she entered into her last class of the day, Calculus. As usual, she found Natsu in his seat face first into a paper that had one too many erase marks on it. The day before Mrs. Puni assigned the class to finished work that was not completed in during the class period. Of course, Lucy had finished hers, and Natsu had not. Even with Lucy's help, he still wasn't able to finish.

"Today class, you're finishing the work from yesterday and turning it in for a grade. If you're done and have reviewed your work, go ahead and turn it in. If not, please use the time you have to finish." Mrs. Puni announced as students came walking into the classroom. "I want good grades this time around, and I know you all can do it!"

Most of the student had looks of pure annoyance while Mrs. Puni was smiling away like her usual self. There were literally stars glittering in her eyes as she thought about grading the papers over the weekend.

I swear!

I'll never understand her excitement of such an annoying and tedious school subject..

After Lucy turned in her work, she walked up to his desk and sat next to him. "Hi, Natsu."

"Huh?" He didn't notice her presence until he heard his name. "Oh, hey, Luce!"

"I see that you're still on the same question."

"Hahahaha..." He laughed nervously while he scratched his head. "Yeah... even when you explained it to me, I still couldn't understand."

"I see.. I'm not that good at explaining things." Lucy's face blushed lightly in embarrassment.

Natsu shook his head. "No, it's not your fault. I just have a hard time learning this crap. I mean how am I going to use most of this stuff in life anyway? I want to become a world famous basketball player not an engineer. Do I look like ?"

"Weeell.."

"Don't answer that."

Lucy laughed while Natsu gripped the paper tightly in his hand. He seemed to be having an especially hard time with math work today. "Do you.. want me to explain again?"

"You really would?"

"Why not? What are friends for?"

"Friends.." At this time, Natsu gave Lucy a warm, gentle smile and made her blush. "I really like the sound of that."

"M-me too! Now, let's get started, shall we?"

However, the moment for her and him was soon interrupted.

"Why, Lisanna, welcome back! I do hope you're feeling better!" Mrs. Puni said excitedly as she drew everyone's attention to the front of the class. Lucy turned to see who it was, and she was taken aback. The female had short silver hair that nearly reached her shoulders, sparkling blue eyes, smooth pale skin, and seemingly flawless figure. She was wearing the same uniform as Lucy, and she had to mention that the girl looked quite beautiful and almost angel like Most of the students in the class were memorized by her mere presence.

She looks an awful like Mirajane!

This must be her sister..

Lisanna?

Lisanna smiled cutely and nodded her head. "Yes, I'm quite better, thank-you!"

Lucy turned to Natsu and saw that he had a huge smile on his face. He then started to wave his hand in the air and call out to her. "LISANNA! YOU'RE FINALLY BACK!"

"Natsu, inside voices please!"

"S-sorry.."

Lisanna gave him a curious glance and then smiled. "If you'll excuse me, teacher."

Lucy watched as various people in the class called out to Lisanna as she walked by. By this, Lucy realized that she quite popular and liked. After she greeted a few more people, Lisanna quickly made her way over to where they were. She suddenly felt a strange feeling from inside of her, and she didn't know exactly what it was.

"When did you get back?" Natsu quickly asked her.

"Today, silly!" She teased as she stuck out her tongue at him.

"But I didn't see you earlier in classes we have together.."

"That's because I was making up missed work in a separate classroom." Lisanna explained. "It wasn't much, but it took all morning and most of the afternoon and- oh, hello! I'm sorry, I didn't see you there."

Lucy had been quiet while the two had been talking. She felt a bit awkward and couldn't find herself to interrupt the two friends. "O-oh, it's alright."

"No, it was rude of Natsu not introducing us, right?"

"H-huh? Sorry! Lisanna, this is my old childhood... friend, Lucy. Lucy this is my math tutor and one of my best friends, Lisanna." Natsu finally introduced them to each other with a cheeky grin on his face.

Lisanna took a long look at Lucy before she smiled cheerfully. "Nice to meet you, Lucy!"

"Nice to meet you too.."

"You're the new girl I've been hearing about, right? Isn't your last name Heartfilia?"

"Yeah, Lucy Heartfilia. My dad is-"

"One of the most important businessmen in whole world. I've read about his accomplishments when I was researching for a paper last year!" Lisanna recalled. "When I graduate I want to own my own business of some sort, although I don't know exactly what. I'm sure I'll figure out before I graduate."

"Really? That sounds like you have a great future ahead of you." Although Lucy had on a friendly face, she felt a little intimidated by her.

"Well, I wont have a future if I can't pass this math class. Can one of you please help me with this?"

Lisanna gave him a curious glance. "One of us?"

"Oh, right! Lucy's been helping me with math since you were absent." He explained to her. "

"Oh, that's so nice of you." Lisanna thanked her. "While I was sick, I was worried about how Natsu would do without me, because.. as you know.. his math skills sucks."

"H-hey! It's not my fault!"

The comment made Lucy laugh. "Yeah, I realized that after he didn't know.

The two girls shared a laugh leaving Natsu to roll his eyes in annoyance. "Are you two just going to make fun of me or help me with this, Lisanna?"

"Huh?" Lucy questioned and then realized that Lisanna was his regular tutor for math.

"Oh, yeah, since Lisanna's here, you don't have to anymore." Natsu answered to her confusion. "But I do appreciate you trying."

"Right and n-no problem! Well, I'll.. let you guys get to it." Lucy gave up her chair to Lisanna who smiled in her direction.

"It was nice meeting you, Lucy!"

"You too.."

Lisanna giggled and then turned her attention to Natsu. "Okay, what don't you understand, Natsu?"

"Everything on this whole page looks like complete gibberish to me."

"You always say that.." She sighed and then began to explain the problem to him.

For the remainder of class time, Lucy had nothing to do with herself. Her work was already completed, and she had planned to spend the time helping Natsu. However, it looked like he no longer needed her, because his regular tutor, Lisanna, had returned.

Well,

What am I supposed to do now?

Lucy couldn't help but watch Lisanna help Natsu with his work. She overheard their conversation and could tell Lisanna had a better way of teaching. From the look on Natsu's face, whatever she was telling and showing him was working. He had the question answered in no time and had moved onto to the next one. When Lucy was teaching him, it took him nearly thirty minutes to finish one problem.

Wow..

She must be a math genius or something!

Now that she was by herself and watching Natsu and Lisanna from afar, she felt a bit lonely and jealous. All she could see and hear was them talking and laughing together as any close friends would.

How can I feel jealous?

I've only meet him a few days ago.. and-

She's just one of his best friends who tutors him in math.. right?

That's all, isn't it?

By the time the bell rang, Lucy had already gathered her things and the first out of the door. She didn't even bother to say bye to Natsu. Why would she in the first place? When she last looked at them, he and Lisanna were just finishing up and going over a few more steps. It was like they didn't hear the bell ring in the first place.

~In front of Fairytail High School~

Levy, Loke, Wendy, Cana, Erza, and Juvia were already there waiting for her.

"For the last time, Loke. It's GIRLS only!" Lucy heard Levy tell him in order to get him to leave.

"Oh, come on!" Loke replied eagerly. "You girls know you want me there to make it more fun."

"Actually, we don't." Wendy told him bluntly. Her coldness caused him to clutch his chest as if his heart was broken.

"The only boy Juvia wants to come is Gray-sama!" Juvia said with a blush on her face as she shunned him away. "Juvia doesn't want the likes of you!"

"Ouch, you're all killing me here!"

"Do I have to physically harm you before you understand the concept of 'Girls Only Sleepover', Loke?" Erza sent him an intense glare that seemed to send shivers down his spine.

Loke quickly stepped back and laughed nervously. He began to back away slowly before he took off. "N-n-ooo.. nooo! I think I got it. I'll see you girls tomorrow then!"

In mere seconds, Loke was gone leaving the girls to themselves. Lucy joined them. "Hey, girls. Are you all ready? Mr. Chang should be here in a minute."

Levy smiled happily. "Yeah, we're just waiting for Mira to show up. Since she's a part time teacher, she gets out a little later than the rest of us."

"There she is now." Cana pointed out. "And Lisanna too? She came back to school today?"

"Funny, I don't remember seeing her around." Wendy mentioned as she thought back on the school day.

Lucy and the girls looked to see the two sisters leaving the school together. Side by side, Lucy could really see the family resemblance they shared. "Sorry, we're late! I had to file some papers away."

"And I had to finish helping Natsu with his math work." Lisanna told them as well. "And you all know how that goes."

"Oh, right before I forget." Mirajane just remembered. "Lucy, this is my younger sister, Lisanna. Lisanna this is-"

"Actually, we've already meet in my last class. She was helping Natsu in my absence." Lisanna told them all.

"Yeah, it was really no problem at all."

"Really?" Mirajane showed an expression of happiness on her face. Since they've already met, she didn't have to introduce them. "Oh, well that's good because I kinda invited her to come to the sleepover. If that's okay that is."

"Yeah, I hope it's alright, Lucy. Even though I'm not one of your old friends, I hope we can become new friends." Lisanna said in a sweet voice. "I.. don't want to intrude if you're not okay with it."

"No, you're not intruding at all!"

You're absolutely.. not.

End~

A/N: First, sorry for any mistakes in grammar, spelling, or anything else I've recently broken my glasses and I had to go back to my old ones for the time being. The old ones have been putting a strain on my eyes, so I can't see as well as before. I'll review this chapter later, but for right now, they need a break.

Secondly, I apologize for the extremely long delay in update. I had a ton of college work on my plate and had no time for myself to really sit down and write. Now, I'm on Christmas break and will try to update again if I can. I would also like to thank you for not giving up on this story, and I'll do my best to keep it going at a good pace. :)

And lastly, I just have one question: Does anyone play "CocoPPaPlay?" It's just a fun, addicting game I've been playing on my iPhone, and I'm just curious if other people play it~

Anyway, until next update...

Bye!
