It seems strange that it has been years since this story has been updated, especially since I think of it often, and it is very near and dear to my hear. Never give up on me!

Chapter 5

She could barely hear the click of her heels as she descended the wooden staircase over the sound of her own heart hammering in her ears. She felt increasingly light-headed with every step. She was grateful for the familiar warmth of Niles' hand over hers, but she found herself wondering if he would have the chance to catch her if she were to fall. The last stair was unforgiving at best. C.C.'s heart took a free-fall to her stomach as both feet finally reached solid ground and her eyes met those of Niles' grinning father.

He was tall and stern but kind-looking. His barrel chest seemed to swell with pride as he simply exclaimed "My son," before giving a hearty clap to Niles' back. C.C. felt herself shiver as the older gentlemans focus turned to her. Before she had the chance to process what was happening, he had enveloped her in a tight embrace, dizzying her with the smell of cigars and peppermint.

"It's so nice to finally meet you, my dear," he said warmly.

C.C. could only smile in reponse, taken aback by the encounter. She allowed her mind to wander as Niles and his father slipped into easy conversation.

"She's just lovely," she distantly heard his father say.

"She truly is," came Niles' soft reply.

"C.C.," called a voice so hushed she had at first thought she imagined it. "C.C."

Niles mother greeted her with that gentle, humble smile she had quickly grown so fond of.

"Lets leave them to their boring talk," she said playfully. "How about you come and keep an old lady company?"

C.C. allowed the woman to take her hand and lead her to the dining room. A wink from Niles on the way out the door served as the boost of confidence she had needed.
